Control-based continuation is technique for tracking the solutions and bifurcations of nonlinear experiments. The basic idea is to apply the method of numerical continuation to a feedback-controlled physical experiment. Since in an experiment it is not (generally) possible to set the state of the system directly, the control target is used as a proxy for the state. The challenge then becomes to determine a control target such that the control is non-invasive, that is, it stabilises a steady-state (or periodic orbit) of the original open-loop experiment without altering it otherwise.
Once implemented, control-based continuation enables the systematic investigation of the bifurcation structure of a physical system, much like if it was numerical model. However, stability information (and hence bifurcation detection and classification) is not readily available due to the presence of stabilising feedback control. This paper uses methods from the system identification community to extract stability information in the form of Floquet multipliers from the closed-loop experiment, thus enabling the direct detection of bifurcations. In particular, it is shown that a periodic auto-regressive model with exogenous inputs (ARX) can be constructed that approximates the time-varying linearisation of the experiment around a particular periodic orbit. This method is demonstrated using a physical nonlinear tuned mass damper.
In this paper we present a general approach to rigorously validate Hopf bifurcations as well as saddle-node bifurcations of periodic orbits in systems of ODEs. By a combination of analytic estimates and computer-assisted calculations, we follow solution curves of cycles through folds, checking along the way that a single nondegenerate saddle-node bifurcation occurs. Similarly, we rigorously continue solution curves of cycles starting from their onset at a Hopf bifurcation. We use a blowup analysis to regularize the continuation problem near the Hopf bifurcation point. This extends the applicab…
Continuation of algebraic structures in families of dynamical systems is described using category theory, sheaves, and lattice algebras. Well-known concepts in dynamics, such as attractors or invariant sets, are formulated as functors on appropriate categories of dynamical systems mapping to categories of lattices, posets, rings or abelian groups. Sheaves are constructed from such functors, which encode data about the continuation of structure as system parameters vary. Similarly, morphisms for the sheaves in question arise from natural transformations. This framework is applied to a variety o…
In this paper we perform the parameter-dependent center manifold reduction near the generalized Hopf (Bautin), fold-Hopf, Hopf-Hopf and transcritical-Hopf bifurcations in delay differential equations (DDEs). This allows us to initialize the continuation of codimension one equilibria and cycle bifurcations emanating from these codimension two bifurcation points. The normal form coefficients are derived in the functional analytic perturbation framework for dual semigroups (sun-star calculus) using a normalization technique based on the Fredholm alternative. The obtained expressions give explicit…
Time delay has been incorporated in models to reflect certain physical or biological meaning. The theory of delay differential equations (DDEs), which has seen extensive growth in the last seventy years or so, can be used to examine the effects of time delay in the dynamical behavior of systems being considered. Numerical tools to study DDEs have played a significant role not only in illustrating theoretical results but also in discovering interesting dynamics of the model. DDE-Biftool, which is a Matlab package for numerical continuation and numerical bifurcation analysis of DDEs, is one of t…

Recently, a novel bifurcation technique known as the deflated continuation method (DCM) was applied to the single-component nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with a parabolic trap in two spatial dimensions. The bifurcation analysis carried out by a subset of the present authors shed light on the configuration space of solutions of this fundamental problem in the physics of ultracold atoms. In the present work, we take this a step further by applying the DCM to two coupled NLS equations in order to elucidate the considerably more complex landscape of solutions of this system. Upon identifyin…
A reaction-diffusion-advection predator-prey model with Holling type-II predator functional response is considered. We show the stability/instability of the positive steady state and the existence of a Hopf bifurcation when the diffusion and advection rates are large. Moreover, we show that advection rate can affect not only the occurrence of Hopf bifurcations but also the values of Hopf bifurcations.
We study the dynamics of a SIR epidemic model with nonlinear incidence rate, vertical transmission vaccination for the newborns and the capacity of treatment, that takes into account the limitedness of the medical resources and the efficiency of the supply of available medical resources. Under some conditions we prove the existence of backward bifurcation, the stability and the direction of Hopf bifurcation. We also explore how the mechanism of backward bifurcation affects the control of the infectious disease. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the theoretical findings.
In this paper, we analyze the stability, convergence, and bifurcation properties of the Boissonade-De Kepper (BD) model which played a key role in the development of nonlinear chemical dynamics. We first outline conditions for local stability, which may help guide design considerations. Then, we show that the BD model undergoes a Hopf bifurcation when the stability condition gets violated. Using Poincaré normal forms and center manifold theory, we derive explicit analytic expressions for determining the type of the Hopf bifurcation and the stability of the limit cycles. This provides insights …
In this paper we consider a model of a nutrient-prey-predator system in a chemostat with general functional responses, using the input concentration of nutrient as the bifurcation parameter. We study the changes in the existence of isolated equilibria and in their stability, as well as the global dynamics, as the nutrient concentration varies. The bifurcations of the system are analytically verified and we identify conditions under which an equilibrium undergoes a Hopf bifurcation and a limit cycle appears. Numerical simulations for specific functional responses illustrate the general results.
In this paper, we study discrete-time model of phytoplankton-zooplankton with Holling type II predator functional response. It is shown that Neimark-Sacker bifurcation occurs at the one of positive fixed points for certain parameter chosen as a bifurcation parameter. The existence and local stability of the positive fixed points of the model are proved. By considering theoretical results in the concrete example, it was obtained interesting dynamics of this system, which is not investigated in its corresponding continuous system.
We study the two state model which describes the balance equation for carbon dioxide and oxygen. These are nonlinear parameter dependent and because of the transport delay in the respiratory control system, they are modeled with delay differential equation. So, the dynamics of a two state one delay model are investigated. By choosing the delay as a parameter, the stability and Hopf bifurcation conditions are obtained. We notice that as the delay passes through its critical value, the positive equilibrium loses its stability and Hopf bifurcation occurs. The stable region of the system with dela…
The present work studies the robustness of certain basic homoclinic motions in an equilateral restricted four body problem. The problem can be viewed as a two parameter family of conservative autonomous vector fields. The main tools are numerical continuation techniques for homoclinic and periodic orbits, as well as formal series methods for computing normal forms and center stable/unstable manifold parameterizations. After careful numerical study of a number of special cases we formulate several conjectures about the global bifurcations of the homoclinic families.
The influence of time-dependent perturbations on an autonomous Hamiltonian system with an equilibrium of center type is considered. It is assumed that the perturbations decay at infinity in time and vanish at the equilibrium of the unperturbed system. In this case the stability and the long-term behaviour of trajectories depend on nonlinear and non-autonomous terms of the equations. The paper investigates bifurcations associated with a change of Lyapunov stability of the equilibrium and the emergence of new attracting or repelling states in the perturbed asymptotically autonomous system. The d…
We consider a widely used form of models for ship maneuvering, whose nonlinearities entail continuous but nonsmooth second-order modulus terms. For such models bifurcations of straight motion are not amenable to standard center manifold reduction and normal forms. Based on a recently developed analytical approach, we nevertheless determine the character of local bifurcations when stabilizing the straight motion course with standard proportional control. For a specific model class we perform a detailed analysis of the linearization to determine the location of these bifurcations in the control …
A piecewise-linear model with a single degree of freedom is derived from first principles for a driven vertical cantilever beam with a localized mass and symmetric stops. The resulting piecewise-linear dynamical system is smoothed by a switching function (nonlinear homotopy). For the chosen smoothing function it is shown that the smoothing can induce bifurcations in certain parameter regimes. These induced bifurcations disappear when the transition of the switching is sufficiently and increasingly localized as the impact becomes harder. The bifurcation structure of the impact oscillator respon…
When extending bifurcation theory of dynamical systems to nonautonomous problems, it is a central observation that hyperbolic equilibria persist as bounded entire solutions under small temporally varying perturbations. In this paper, we abandon the smallness assumption and aim to investigate the global structure of the entity of all such bounded entire solutions in the situation of nonautonomous difference equations. Our tools are global implicit function theorems based on an ambient degree theory for Fredholm operators due to Fitzpatrick, Pejsachowicz and Rabier. For this we yet have to restr…
The present work studies the continuation class of the regular $n$-gon solution of the $n$-body problem. For odd numbers of bodies between $n = 3$ and $n = 15$ we apply one parameter numerical continuation algorithms to the energy/frequency variable, and find that the figure eight choreography can be reached starting from the regular $n$-gon. The continuation leaves the plane of the $n$-gon, and passes through families of spatial choreographies with the topology of torus knots. Numerical continuation out of the $n$-gon solution is complicated by the fact that the kernel of the linearization th…
DDEBIFTOOL is a collection of Matlab routines for numerical bifurcation analysis of systems of delay differential equations with discrete constant and state-dependent delays. The package supports continuation and stability analysis of steady state solutions and periodic solutions. Further one can compute and continue several local and global bifurcations: fold and Hopf bifurcations of steady states; folds, period doublings and torus bifurcations of periodic orbits; and connecting orbits between equilibria. To analyse the stability of steady state solutions, approximations are computed to the r…
We study the stability and bifurcation of relative equilibria of a particle on the Lie group $SO(3)$ whose motion is governed by an $SO(3)\times SO(2)$ invariant metric and an $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ invariant potential. Our method is to reduce the number of degrees of freedom at singular values of the $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ momentum map and study the stability of the equilibria of the reduced systems as a function of spin. The result is an elementary analysis of the fast/slow transition in the Lagrange and Kirchhoff tops. More generally, since an $SO(2)\times SO(2)$ invariant potential on $SO(3)$ ca…
We conduct a local stability and Hopf bifurcation analysis for Compound TCP, with small Drop-tail buffers, in three topologies. The first topology consists of two sets of TCP flows having different round trip times, and feeding into a core router. The second topology corresponds to two queues in tandem, and consists of two distinct sets of TCP flows, regulated by a single edge router and feeding into a core router. The third topology comprises of two distinct sets of TCP flows, regulated by two separate edge routers, and feeding into a common core router. For each of these cases, we conduct a …
The Morris-Lecar (ML) model has applications to neuroscience and cognition. A simple network consisting of a pair of synaptically coupled ML neurons can exhibit a wide variety of deterministic behaviors including asymmetric amplitude state (AAS), equal amplitude state (EAS), and steady state (SS). In addition, in the presence of noise this network can exhibit mixed-mode oscillations (MMO), which represent the system being stochastically driven between these behaviors. In this paper, we develop a method to specifically estimate the parameters representing the coupling strength (gsyn) and the ap…
This paper considers the extreme type-II Ginzburg-Landau equations, a nonlinear PDE model that describes the states of a wide range of superconductors. For two-dimensional grids, a robust method is developed that performs a numerical continuation of the equations, automatically exploring the whole solution landscape. The strength of the applied magnetic field is used as the bifurcation parameter. Our branch switching algorithm is based on Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction, but we will show that for an important class of grids an alternative method based on the equivariant branching lemma can be appli…
In this manuscript, we study a Leslie-Gower predator-prey model with a hyperbolic functional response and weak Allee effect. The results reveal that the model supports coexistence and oscillation of both predator and prey populations. We also identify regions in the parameter space in which different kinds of bifurcations, such as saddle-node bifurcations, Hopf bifurcations and Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations.
In this paper, we consider the diffusive Nicholson's blowflies model in spatially heterogeneous environment when the diffusion rate is large. We show that the ratio of the average of the maximum per capita egg production rate to that of the death rate affects the dynamics of the model. The unique positive steady state is locally asymptotically stable if the ratio is less than a critical value. However, when the ratio is greater than the critical value, large time delay can make the unique positive steady state unstable through Hopf bifurcation. Especially, the first Hopf bifurcation value tend…
In this paper we study a model of HCV with mitotic proliferation, a saturation infection rate and a discrete intracellular delay: the delay corresponds to the time between infection of a infected target hepatocytes and production of new HCV particles. We establish the global stability of the infection-free equilibrium and existence, uniqueness, local and global stabilities of the infected equilibrium, also we establish the occurrence of a Hopf bifurcation. We will determine conditions for the permanence of model, and the length of delay to preserve stability. The unique infected equilibrium is…
We perform a bifurcation analysis on an SIR model involving two pathogens that influences each other. Partial cross-immunity is assumed and coinfection is thought to be less transmittable then each of the diseases alone. The susceptible class has density dependent growth with carrying capacity $K$. Our model generalizes the model developed in our previous papers by introducing the possibility for coinfected individuals to spread only one of the diseases when in contact with a susceptible. We perform a bifurcation analysis and prove the existence of a branch of stable equilibrium points parmete…
Dynamics in delayed differential equations (DDEs) is a well studied problem mainly because DDEs arise in models in many areas of science including biology, physiology, population dynamics and engineering. The change of the nature in the solutions in the parameter space for a network of Phase-Locked Loop oscillators was studied in Symmetric bifurcation analysis of synchronous states of time-delayed coupled Phase-Locked Loop oscillators. Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation, Elsevier BV, 2014, (on-line version), where the existence of Hopf bifurcations for both cases, sym…
In this paper, we proposed a population model depicting the dynamics of a prey species showing group defence against a generalist predator. The group defence characteristic is represented by a non-monotonic functional response. We have established the local stability of the model around the co-existent equilibrium solution using a local Lyapunov function. Condition for existence Hopf bifurcation is obtained along with its normal form. Numerical simulations have been done to confirm the obtained analytical results as well as to validate the proposed model. Sensitivity analysis of the parameters…
This paper generalizes the existing minimal model of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in a realistic way, by including memory terms: distributed time delays, on one hand and fractional-order derivatives, on the other hand. The existence of a unique equilibrium point of the mathematical models is proved and a local stability analysis is undertaken for the system with general distributed delays. A thorough bifurcation analysis for the distributed delay model with several types of delay kernels is provided. Numerical simulations are carried out for the distributed delays models and f…
This paper presents a stability analysis of simple neuromodules displaying fold bifurcations (leading to hysteresis), flip bifurcations (period doubling and undoubling to and from chaos) and Neimark-Sacker bifurcations (quasiperiodic and periodic bifurcations). For the first time, bifurcation diagrams are plotted using a feedback mechanism. It is shown that the stability curves and bifurcation diagrams must be dealt with simultaneously in order to fully understand the dynamics of the systems involved. Synaptic weights, biases and gradients of transfer functions are varied and the system is sho…
The FitzHugh-Nagumo equation has been investigated with a wide array of different methods in the last three decades. Recently a version of the equations with an applied current was analyzed by Champneys, Kirk, Knobloch, Oldeman and Sneyd using numerical continuation methods. They obtained a complicated bifurcation diagram in parameter space featuring a C-shaped curve of homoclinic bifurcations and a U-shaped curve of Hopf bifurcations. We use techniques from multiple time-scale dynamics to understand the structures of this bifurcation diagram based on geometric singular perturbation analysis o…
