We revisit a problem considered by Chow and Hale on the existence of subharmonic solutions for perturbed systems. In the analytic setting, under more general (weaker) conditions, we prove their results on the existence of bifurcation curves from the nonexistence to the existence of subharmonic solutions. In particular our results apply also when one has degeneracy to first order -- i.e. when the subharmonic Melnikov function vanishes identically. Moreover we can deal as well with the case in which degeneracy persists to arbitrarily high orders, in the sense that suitable generalisations to higher orders of the subharmonic Melnikov function are also identically zero. In general the bifurcation curves are not analytic, and even when they are smooth they can form cusps at the origin: we say in this case that the curves are degenerate as the corresponding tangent lines coincide. The technique we use is completely different from that of Chow and Hale, and it is essentially based on rigorous perturbation theory.
This paper ascertains the global topological structure of the set of subharmonics of arbitrary order of the periodic predator-prey model introduced in López-Gómez, Ortega and Tineo in 1996. By constructing the iterates of the monodromy operator of the system, it is shown that the system admits subharmonics of all orders for the appropriate ranges of values of the parameters. Then, some sharp results of topological nature in the context of global bifurcation theory provide us with the fine topological structure of the components of subharmonics emanating from the T-periodic coexistence state.
We study the problem of subharmonic bifurcations for analytic systems in the plane with perturbations depending periodically on time, in the case in which we only assume that the subharmonic Melnikov function has at least one zero. If the order of zero is odd, then there is always at least one subharmonic solution, whereas if the order is even in general other conditions have to be assumed to guarantee the existence of subharmonic solutions. Even when such solutions exist, in general they are not analytic in the perturbation parameter. We show that they are analytic in a fractional power of th…
We study the existence of subharmonic solutions in the system $\ddot {u}(t)=f(t,u(t))$, where $u(t)\in\mathbb{R}^{k}$ and $f$ is an even and $p$-periodic function in time. Under some additional symmetry conditions on the function $f$, the problem of finding $mp$-periodic solutions can be reformulated in a functional space as a $Γ\times\mathbb{Z}_{2}\times D_{m}% $-equivariant equation, where the group $Γ\times\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ acts on the space $\mathbb{R}^{k}$ and $D_{m}$ acts on $u(t)$ by time-shifts and reflection. We apply Brouwer equivariant degree to prove the existence of an infinite numb…
Lienard systems of the form $\ddot{x}+εf(x)\dot{x}+x=0$, with f(x) an even continous function, are considered. The bifurcation curves of limit cycles are calculated exactly in the weak ($ε\to 0$) and in the strongly ($ε\to\infty$) nonlinear regime in some examples. The number of limit cycles does not increase when $ε$ increases from zero to infinity in all the cases analyzed.
In this paper, we take advantage of the averaging theory to investigate a torus bifurcation in two-parameter families of 2D nonautonomous differential equations. Our strategy consists in looking for generic conditions on the averaged functions that ensure the existence of a curve in the parameter space characterized by a Neimark-Sacker bifurcation in the corresponding Poincaré map. A Neimark-Sacker bifurcation for planar maps consists in the birth of an invariant closed curve from a fixed point, as the fixed point changes stability. In addition, we apply our results to study a torus bifurcatio…
We analyse three codimension-two bifurcations occurring in nonsmooth systems, when a non-hyperbolic cycle (fold, flip, and Neimark-Sacker cases, both in continuous- and discrete-time) interacts with one of the discontinuity boundaries characterising the system's dynamics. Rather than aiming at a complete unfolding of the three cases, which would require specific assumptions on both the class of nonsmooth system and the geometry of the involved boundary, we concentrate on the geometric features that are common to all scenarios. We show that, at a generic intersection between the smooth and disc…
We study critical orbits and bifurcations within the moduli space of quadratic rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$. We focus on the family of curves, $Per_1(λ)$ for $λ$ in $\mathbb{C}$, defined by the condition that each $f\in Per_1(λ)$ has a fixed point of multiplier $λ$. We prove that the curve $Per_1(λ)$ contains infinitely many postcritically-finite maps if and only if $λ= 0$; addressing a special case of [BD2, Conjecture 1.4]. We also show that the two critical points of a map $f$ define distinct bifurcation measures along $Per_1(λ)$.

We consider the bifurcation diagram in a suitable parameter plane of a quadratic vector field in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that features a homoclinic flip bifurcation of the most complicated type. This codimension-two bifurcation is characterized by a change of orientability of associated two-dimensional manifolds and generates infinite families of secondary bifurcations. We show that curves of secondary $n$-homoclinic bifurcations accumulate on a curve of a heteroclinic bifurcation involving infinity. We present an adaptation of the technique known as Lin's method that enables us to compute such connect…
Area-preserving nontwist maps are used to describe a broad range of physical systems. In those systems, the violation of the twist condition leads to nontwist characteristic phenomena, such as reconnection-collision sequences and shearless invariant curves that act as transport barriers in the phase space. Although reported in numerical investigations, the shearless bifurcation, i.e., the emergence scenario of multiple shearless curves, is not well understood. In this work, we derive an area-preserving map as a local approximation of a particle transport model for confined plasmas. Multiple sh…
We propose a general mechanism by which strange non-chaotic attractors (SNA) are created during the collision of invariant curves in quasiperiodically forced systems. This mechanism is first discussed on an heuristic level and by means of simulations. In the considered examples, a stable and an unstable invariant circle undergo a saddle-node bifurcation, but instead of a neutral invariant curve there exists a strange non-chaotic attractor-repeller pair at the bifurcation point. This process is accompanied by a very characteristic behaviour of the invariant curves prior to their collision, whic…
In this paper we present a general approach to rigorously validate Hopf bifurcations as well as saddle-node bifurcations of periodic orbits in systems of ODEs. By a combination of analytic estimates and computer-assisted calculations, we follow solution curves of cycles through folds, checking along the way that a single nondegenerate saddle-node bifurcation occurs. Similarly, we rigorously continue solution curves of cycles starting from their onset at a Hopf bifurcation. We use a blowup analysis to regularize the continuation problem near the Hopf bifurcation point. This extends the applicab…
We study the dynamics of the Forced Logistic Map in the cylinder. We compute a bifurcation diagram in terms of the dynamics of the attracting set. Different properties of the attracting set are considered, as the Lyapunov exponent and, in the case of having a periodic invariant curve, its period and its reducibility. This reveals that the parameter values for which the invariant curve doubles its period are contained in regions of the parameter space where the invariant curve is reducible. Then we present two additional studies to explain this fact. In first place we consider the images and th…
There are few examples of non-autonomous vector fields exhibiting complex dynamics that may be proven analytically. We analyse a family of periodic perturbations of a weakly attracting robust heteroclinic network defined on the two-sphere. We derive the first return map near the heteroclinic cycle for small amplitude of the perturbing term, and we reduce the analysis of the non-autonomous system to that of a two-dimensional map on a cylinder. Interesting dynamical features arise from a discrete-time Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation. When the perturbation strength is small the first return map has a…
We introduce a new dynamical system model called the shadowing problem, where a shadower chases after an escaper by always staring at and keeping the distance from him. When the escaper runs along a planar closed curve, we associate to the reduced shadowing equations the rotation number, and show that it depends only on the geometry of the escaping curve. Two notions called the critical shadowing distance and turning shadowing distance are introduced to characterize different dynamical behaviors. We show that a planar closed escaping curve could have shadowing curves of different types includi…
In this article, the phenomenon of delayed Hopf bifurcations (DHB) in reaction-diffusion PDEs is analyzed in the cubic Complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with a slowly-varying parameter. We use the classical asymptotic methods of stationary phase and steepest descents to show that solutions which approach the attracting quasi-steady state (QSS) before the Hopf bifurcation remain near that state for long times after the Hopf bifurcation and the QSS has become repelling. In the complex time plane, the phase function of the linear PDE has a saddle point, and the Stokes and anti-Stokes lines are cen…
The Bogdanov-Takens system has at most one limit cycle and, in the parameter space, it exists between a Hopf and a saddle-loop bifurcation curves. The aim of this paper is to prove the Perko's conjectures about some analytic properties of the saddle-loop bifurcation curve. Moreover, we provide sharp piecewise algebraic upper and lower bounds for this curve.
A parameter dependent perturbation of the spectrum of the scalar Laplacian is studied for a class of nonlocal and non-self-adjoint rank one perturbations. A detailed description of the perturbed spectrum is obtained both for Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded interval as well as for the problem on the full real line. The perturbation results are applied to the study of a related parameter dependent nonlinear and nonlocal parabolic equation. The equation models a feedback system that e.g. can be interpreted as a thermostat device or in the context of an agent based price formation model…
We show the existence of open sets of bifurcations near Latt{è}s maps of sufficiently high degree. In particular, every Latt{è}s map has an iterate which is in the closure of the interior of the bifurcation locus. To show this, we design a method to intersect the limit set of some particular type of IFS with a well-oriented curve. Then, we show that a Latt{è}s map of sufficiently high degree can be perturbed to exhibit this geometry.
The FitzHugh-Nagumo equation has been investigated with a wide array of different methods in the last three decades. Recently a version of the equations with an applied current was analyzed by Champneys, Kirk, Knobloch, Oldeman and Sneyd using numerical continuation methods. They obtained a complicated bifurcation diagram in parameter space featuring a C-shaped curve of homoclinic bifurcations and a U-shaped curve of Hopf bifurcations. We use techniques from multiple time-scale dynamics to understand the structures of this bifurcation diagram based on geometric singular perturbation analysis o…
Motivated by mirror symmetry, we consider the Lagrangian fibration $\R^4\to\R^2$ and Lagrangian maps $f:L\hookrightarrow \R^4\to \R^2$, exhibiting an unstable singularity, and study how the bifurcation locus of gradient lines, the integral curves of $\nabla f_x$, for $x\in B$, where $f_x(y)=f(y)-x\cdot y$, changes when $f$ is slightly perturbed. We consider the cases when $f$ is the germ of a fold, of a cusp and, particularly, of an elliptic umbilic.
