Eye image segmentation is a critical step in eye tracking that has great influence over the final gaze estimate. Segmentation models trained using supervised machine learning can excel at this task, their effectiveness is determined by the degree of overlap between the narrow distributions of image properties defined by the target dataset and highly specific training datasets, of which there are few. Attempts to broaden the distribution of existing eye image datasets through the inclusion of synthetic eye images have found that a model trained on synthetic images will often fail to generalize back to real-world eye images. In remedy, we use dimensionality-reduction techniques to measure the overlap between the target eye images and synthetic training data, and to prune the training dataset in a manner that maximizes distribution overlap. We demonstrate that our methods result in robust, improved performance when tackling the discrepancy between simulation and real-world data samples.

From scientific research to commercial applications, eye tracking is an important tool across many domains. Despite its range of applications, eye tracking has yet to become a pervasive technology. We believe that we can put the power of eye tracking in everyone's palm by building eye tracking software that works on commodity hardware such as mobile phones and tablets, without the need for additional sensors or devices. We tackle this problem by introducing GazeCapture, the first large-scale dataset for eye tracking, containing data from over 1450 people consisting of almost 2.5M frames. Using…

Traditional eye tracking requires specialized hardware, which means collecting gaze data from many observers is expensive, tedious and slow. Therefore, existing saliency prediction datasets are order-of-magnitudes smaller than typical datasets for other vision recognition tasks. The small size of these datasets limits the potential for training data intensive algorithms, and causes overfitting in benchmark evaluation. To address this deficiency, this paper introduces a webcam-based gaze tracking system that supports large-scale, crowdsourced eye tracking deployed on Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT…
Estimating eye-gaze from images alone is a challenging task, in large parts due to un-observable person-specific factors. Achieving high accuracy typically requires labeled data from test users which may not be attainable in real applications. We observe that there exists a strong relationship between what users are looking at and the appearance of the user's eyes. In response to this understanding, we propose a novel dataset and accompanying method which aims to explicitly learn these semantic and temporal relationships. Our video dataset consists of time-synchronized screen recordings, user-…
Recently, many multi-stream gaze estimation methods have been proposed. They estimate gaze from eye and face appearances and achieve reasonable accuracy. However, most of the methods simply concatenate the features extracted from eye and face appearance. The feature fusion process has been ignored. In this paper, we propose a novel Adaptive Feature Fusion Network (AFF-Net), which performs gaze tracking task in mobile tablets. We stack two-eye feature maps and utilize Squeeze-and-Excitation layers to adaptively fuse two-eye features according to their similarity on appearance. Meanwhile, we als…

In recent years, head-mounted near-eye display devices have become the key hardware foundation for virtual reality and augmented reality. Thus head-mounted gaze tracking technology has received attention as an essential part of human-computer interaction. However, unavoidable slippage of head-mounted devices (HMD) often results higher gaze tracking errors and hinders the practical usage of HMD. To tackle this problem, we propose a slippage-robust gaze tracking for near-eye display method based on the aspheric eyeball model and accurately compute the eyeball optical axis and rotation center. We…
In recent years many different deep neural networks were developed, but due to a large number of layers in deep networks, their training requires a long time and a large number of datasets. Today is popular to use trained deep neural networks for various tasks, even for simple ones in which such deep networks are not required. The well-known deep networks such as YoloV3, SSD, etc. are intended for tracking and monitoring various objects, therefore their weights are heavy and the overall accuracy for a specific task is low. Eye-tracking tasks need to detect only one object - an iris in a given …
We present a new dataset and benchmark with the goal of advancing research in the intersection of brain activities and eye movements. Our dataset, EEGEyeNet, consists of simultaneous Electroencephalography (EEG) and Eye-tracking (ET) recordings from 356 different subjects collected from three different experimental paradigms. Using this dataset, we also propose a benchmark to evaluate gaze prediction from EEG measurements. The benchmark consists of three tasks with an increasing level of difficulty: left-right, angle-amplitude and absolute position. We run extensive experiments on this benchma…
Model-based eye tracking has been a dominant approach for eye gaze tracking because of its ability to generalize to different subjects, without the need of any training data and eye gaze annotations. Model-based eye tracking, however, is susceptible to eye feature detection errors, in particular for eye tracking in the wild. To address this issue, we propose a Bayesian framework for model-based eye tracking. The proposed system consists of a cascade-Bayesian Convolutional Neural Network (c-BCNN) to capture the probabilistic relationships between eye appearance and its landmarks, and a geometri…

Deep neural networks for video-based eye tracking have demonstrated resilience to noisy environments, stray reflections, and low resolution. However, to train these networks, a large number of manually annotated images are required. To alleviate the cumbersome process of manual labeling, computer graphics rendering is employed to automatically generate a large corpus of annotated eye images under various conditions. In this work, we introduce a synthetic eye image generation platform that improves upon previous work by adding features such as an active deformable iris, an aspherical cornea, re…
Video-based eye tracking is a valuable technique in various research fields. Numerous open-source eye tracking algorithms have been developed in recent years, primarily designed for general application with many different camera types. These algorithms do not, however, capitalize on the high frame rate of eye tracking cameras often employed in psychophysical studies. We present a pupil detection method that utilizes this high-speed property to obtain reliable predictions through recursive estimation about certain pupil characteristics in successive camera frames. These predictions are subseque…

We present a novel, automatic eye gaze tracking scheme inspired by smooth pursuit eye motion while playing mobile games or watching virtual reality contents. Our algorithm continuously calibrates an eye tracking system for a head mounted display. This eliminates the need for an explicit calibration step and automatically compensates for small movements of the headset with respect to the head. The algorithm finds correspondences between corneal motion and screen space motion, and uses these to generate Gaussian Process Regression models. A combination of those models provides a continuous mappi…

Eye movements play a vital role in perceiving the world. Eye gaze can give a direct indication of the users point of attention, which can be useful in improving human-computer interaction. Gaze estimation in a non-intrusive manner can make human-computer interaction more natural. Eye tracking can be used for several applications such as fatigue detection, biometric authentication, disease diagnosis, activity recognition, alertness level estimation, gaze-contingent display, human-computer interaction, etc. Even though eye-tracking technology has been around for many decades, it has not found mu…
Eye-tracking technologies have been widely used in applications like psychological studies and human computer interactions (HCI). Eye tracking is an important tool with a wide range of applications in Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality (VR/AR/MR) technologies. State-of-the-art eye tracking methods are either reflection-based and track reflections of sparse point light sources, or image-based and exploit 2D features of the acquired eye image. In this work, we attempt to significantly improve reflection-based methods by utilizing pixel-dense deflectometric surface measurements in combination with optimization-based inverse rendering algorithms. Utilizing the known geometry of our deflectometric setup, we develop a diffe…
We present ongoing work to harness biological approaches to achieving highly efficient egocentric perception by combining the space-variant imaging architecture of the mammalian retina with Deep Learning methods. By pre-processing images collected by means of eye-tracking glasses to control the fixation locations of a software retina model, we demonstrate that we can reduce the input to a DCNN by a factor of 3, reduce the required number of training epochs and obtain over 98% classification rates when training and validating the system on a database of over 26,000 images of 9 object classes.
A new high-precision eye-tracking method has been demonstrated recently by tracking the motion of iris features rather than by exploiting pupil edges. While the method provides high precision, it suffers from temporal drift, an inability to track across blinks, and loss of texture matches in the presence of motion blur. In this work, we present a new methodology $pi_t$ to address these issues by optimally combining the information from both iris textures and pupil edges. With this method, we show an improvement in precision (S2S-RMS & STD) of at least 48% and 10% respectively while fixating a …

Even low-cost consumer-grade webcams can be used for gaze tracking without any additional hardware. A two-stage algorithm is proposed for iris centre localization. The proposed method uses geometrical characteristics of the eye. In the first stage, a fast convolution based approach is used for obtain…

Delirium, an acute confusional state, is a common occurrence in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Patients who develop delirium have globally worse outcomes than those who do not and thus the diagnosis of delirium is of importance. Current diagnostic methods have several limitations leading to the suggestion of eye-tracking for its diagnosis through in-attention. To ascertain the requirements for an eye-tracking system in an adult ICU, measurements were carried out at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Clinical criteria guided empirical requirements of invasiveness and calibration…

One of the main challenges of social interaction in virtual reality settings is that head-mounted displays occlude a large portion of the face, blocking facial expressions and thereby restricting social engagement cues among users. Hence, auxiliary means of sensing and conveying these expressions are needed. We present an algorithm to automatically infer expressions by analyzing only a partially occluded face while the user is engaged in a virtual reality experience. Specifically, we show that images of the user's eyes captured from an IR gaze-tracking camera within a VR headset are sufficient…

A plethora of research in the literature shows how human eye fixation pattern varies depending on different factors, including genetics, age, social functioning, cognitive functioning, and so on. Analysis of these variations in visual attention has already elicited two potential research avenues: 1) determining the physiological or psychological state of the subject and 2) predicting the tasks associated with the act of viewing from the recorded eye-fixation data. To this end, this paper proposes a visual saliency based novel feature extraction method for automatic and quantitative classificat…

Pupil comprises 1) a light-weight headset with high-resolution cameras, 2) an open source software framework for mobile eye tracking, as…
This paper introduces and evaluates a hybrid technique that fuses efficiently the eye-tracking principles of photosensor oculography (PSOG) and video oculography (VOG). In order to evaluate the proposed method, we simulate the functional components of the technique and present our resu…

This paper presents a renewed overview of photosensor oculography (PSOG), an eye-tracking technique based on the principle of using simple photosensors to measure the amount of reflected (usually infrared) light when the eye rotates. Photosensor oculography can provide measurements with high precision, low latency and reduced power consumption, and thus it appears as an attractive option for performing eye-tracking in the emerging head-mounted interaction devices, e.g. augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) headsets. In our current work we employ an adjustable simulation framework as a common b…
In this paper, we use fully convolutional neural networks for the semantic segmentation of eye tracking data. We also use these networks for reconstruction, and in conjunction with a variational auto-encoder to generate eye movement data. The first improvement of our approach is that no input window is necessary, due to the use of fully convolutional networks and therefore any input size can be processed directly. The second improvement is that the used and generated data is raw eye tracking data (position X, Y and time) without preprocessing. This is achieved by pre-initializing the filters i…

For this purpose, we evaluate our approach iteratively to showcase the behavior of the reinforcement learning based approach. In addition, we evaluate the importance of temporal, as well as spatial, information o…
