Encouraged by the success of deep learning in a variety of domains, we investigate a novel application of its methods on the effectiveness of detecting user confusion in eye-tracking data. We introduce an architecture that uses RNN and CNN sub-models in parallel to take advantage of the temporal and visuospatial aspects of our data. Experiments with a dataset of user interactions with the ValueChart visualization tool show that our model outperforms an existing model based on Random Forests resulting in a 22% improvement in combined sensitivity & specificity.
Encouraged by the success of deep learning in a variety of domains, we investigate the suitability and effectiveness of Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) in a domain where deep learning has not yet been used; namely detecting confusion from eye-tracking data. Through experiments with a dataset of user interactions with ValueChart (an interactive visualization tool), we found that RNNs learn a feature representation from the raw data that allows for a more powerful classifier than previous methods that use engineered features. This is evidenced by the stronger performance of the RNN (0.74/0.71 s…
The new developments in deep generative networks have significantly improve the quality and efficiency in generating realistically-looking fake face videos. In this work, we describe a new method to expose fake face videos generated with neural networks. Our method is based on detection of eye blinking in the videos, which is a physiological signal that is not well presented in the synthesized fake videos. Our method is tested over benchmarks of eye-blinking detection datasets and also show promising performance on detecting videos generated with DeepFake.

Diabetes-related retinal conditions can be detected by examining the posterior of the eye. By contrast, examining the anterior of the eye can reveal conditions affecting the front of the eye, such as changes to the eyelids, cornea, or crystalline lens. In this work, we studied whether external photographs of the front of the eye can reveal insights into both diabetic retinal diseases and blood glucose control. We developed a deep learning system (DLS) using external eye photographs of 145,832 patients with diabetes from 301 diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening sites in one US state, and evaluat…
In this paper, we explore different deep learning based approaches to detect driver fatigue. Drowsy driving results in approximately 72,000 crashes and 44,000 injuries every year in the US and detecting drowsiness and alerting the driver can save many lives. There have been many approaches to detect fatigue, of which eye closedness detection is one. We propose a framework to detect eye closedness in a captured camera frame as a gateway for detecting drowsiness. We explore two different datasets to detect eye closedness. We develop an eye model by using new Eye-blink dataset and a face model by…

Common computational methods for automated eye movement detection - i.e. the task of detecting different types of eye movement in a continuous stream of gaze data - are limited in that they either involve thresholding on hand-crafted signal features, require individual detectors each only detecting a single movement, or require pre-segmented data. We propose a novel approach for eye movement detection that only involves learning a single detector end-to-end, i.e. directly from the continuous gaze data stream and simultaneously for different eye movements without any manual feature crafting or …

Delirium, an acute confusional state, is a common occurrence in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Patients who develop delirium have globally worse outcomes than those who do not and thus the diagnosis of delirium is of importance. Current diagnostic methods have several limitations leading to the suggestion of eye-tracking for its diagnosis through in-attention. To ascertain the requirements for an eye-tracking system in an adult ICU, measurements were carried out at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Clinical criteria guided empirical requirements of invasiveness and calibration…
Currently, detecting 3D objects in Bird's-Eye-View (BEV) is superior to other 3D detectors for autonomous driving and robotics. However, transforming image features into BEV necessitates special operators to conduct feature sampling. These operators are not supported on many edge devices, bringing extra obstacles when deploying detectors. To address this problem, we revisit the generation of BEV representation and propose detecting objects in perspective BEV -- a new BEV representation that does not require feature sampling. We demonstrate that perspective BEV features can likewise enjoy the b…

In this work, we tackle the problem of ternary eye movement classification, which aims to separate fixations, saccades and smooth pursuits from the raw eye positional data. The efficient classification of these different types of eye movements helps to better analyze and utilize the eye tracking data. Different from the existing methods that detect eye movement by several pre-defined threshold values, we propose a hierarchical Hidden Markov Model (HMM) statistical algorithm for detecting fixations, saccades and smooth pursuits. The proposed algorithm leverages different features from the recor…

Synthetic data used for scene text detection and recognition tasks have proven effective. However, there are still two problems: First, the color schemes used for text coloring in the existing methods are relatively fixed color key-value pairs learned from real datasets. The dirty data in real datasets may cause the problem that the colors of text and background are too similar to be distinguished from each other. Second, the generated texts are uniformly limited to the same depth of a picture, while there are special cases in the real world that text may appear across depths. To address these…

We present the first purely event-based method for face detection using the high temporal resolution of an event-based camera. We will rely on a new feature that has never been used for such a task that relies on detecting eye blinks. Eye blinks are a unique natural dynamic signature of human faces that is captured well by event-based sensors that rely on relative changes of luminance. Although an eye blink can be captured with conventional cameras, we will show that the dynamics of eye blinks combined with the fact that two eyes act simultaneously allows to derive a robust methodology for fac…
Machine learning models, especially based on deep architectures are used in everyday applications ranging from self driving cars to medical diagnostics. It has been shown that such models are dangerously susceptible to adversarial samples, indistinguishable from real samples to human eye, adversarial samples lead to incorrect classifications with high confidence. Impact of adversarial samples is far-reaching and their efficient detection remains an open problem. We propose to use direct density ratio estimation as an efficient model agnostic measure to detect adversarial samples. Our proposed …

Detection of illegal and threatening items in baggage is one of the utmost security concern nowadays. Even for experienced security personnel, manual detection is a time-consuming and stressful task. Many academics have created automated frameworks for detecting suspicious and contraband data from X-ray scans of luggage. However, to our knowledge, no framework exists that utilizes temporal baggage X-ray imagery to effectively screen highly concealed and occluded objects which are barely visible even to the naked eye. To address this, we present a novel temporal fusion driven multi-scale residu…
Moving object detection and segmentation is an essential task in the Autonomous Driving pipeline. Detecting and isolating static and moving components of a vehicle's surroundings are particularly crucial in path planning and localization tasks. This paper proposes a novel real-time architecture for motion segmentation of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. We use three successive scans of LiDAR data in 2D Bird's Eye View (BEV) representation to perform pixel-wise classification as static or moving. Furthermore, we propose a novel data augmentation technique to reduce the significant clas…

GAN-based techniques that generate and synthesize realistic faces have caused severe social concerns and security problems. Existing methods for detecting GAN-generated faces can perform well on limited public datasets. However, images from existing public datasets do not represent real-world scenarios well enough in terms of view variations and data distributions (where real faces largely outnumber synthetic faces). The state-of-the-art methods do not generalize well in real-world problems and lack the interpretability of detection results. Performance of existing GAN-face detection models de…

Detecting mental states of human users is crucial for the development of cooperative and intelligent robots, as it enables the robot to understand the user's intentions and desires. Despite their importance, it is difficult to obtain a large amount of high quality data for training automatic recognition algorithms as the time and effort required to collect and label such data is prohibitively high. In this paper we present a multimodal machine learning approach for detecting dis-/agreement and confusion states in a human-robot interaction environment, using just a small amount of manually anno…
