In the chiral limit the complicated many-body dynamics around the second-order chiral phase transition of two-flavor QCD can be understood by appealing to universality. We present a novel formulation of the real-time functional renormalization group that describes the stochastic hydrodynamic equations of motion for systems in the same dynamic universality class, which corresponds to Model G in the Halperin-Hohenberg classification. Our approach preserves all relevant symmetries of such systems with reversible mode couplings. We show that the calculations indeed produce the non-trivial value $z=d/2$ for the dynamic critical exponent, where $d$ is the number of spatial dimensions. From the momentum and temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient of the conserved charge densities, we extract the dimensionless universal scaling function.
We describe details of the renormalization of two-loop integrals relevant to the calculation of the nucleon mass in the framework of manifestly Lorentz-invariant chiral perturbation theory using infrared renormalization. It is shown that the renormalization can be performed while preserving all relevant symmetries, in particular chiral symmetry, and that renormalized diagrams respect the standard power counting rules. As an application we calculate the chiral expansion of the nucleon mass to order O(q^6).
Employing background-field method and super-heat-kernel expansion, we compute the complete one-loop renormalization of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian with a light Higgs boson. Earlier results from purely scalar fluctuations are confirmed as a special case. We also recover the one-loop renormalization of the conventional Standard Model in the appropriate limit.
The framework of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian with a light Higgs is extended by an additional scalar and then generalized to N scalars in the Higgs sector. Divergences from scalar fluctuations are renormalized up to one loop using the background field method. The results are crosschecked against the case of one scalar. A subset of the divergences is demonstrated and crosschecked diagrammatically. Together with the complete one-loop renormalization of the electroweak chiral theory with one light Higgs conducted previously, this constitutes a renormalization framework of any pure scalar ext…
We investigated the chiral symmetry and U_A(1) anomaly at finite temperature by applying the functional renormalization group to the SU(3) linear sigma model. Expanding the local potential around the classical fields, we derived the flow equations for the renormalization parameters. In chiral limit, the flow equation for the chiral condensate is decoupled from the others and can be analytically solved. The Goldstone theorem is guaranteed in vacuum and at finite temperature, and the two phase transitions for the chiral and U_A(1) symmetry restoration happen at the same critical temperature. In …
We analyze the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model which is a chiral effective model of QCD by using the non-perturbative renormalization group at finite temperature and finite density. We discuss the chiral phase diagram in the model. We include the large-$N$ non-leading contribution in the beta function and discuss its effects for the phase boundary.
We match the electroweak chiral Lagrangian with two singlet scalars to the next-to-minimal composite Higgs model with $ SO(6)/SO(5) $ coset structure and extract the scalar divergences to one loop. Assuming the additional scalar to be heavy, we integrate it out and perform a matching to the well-established electroweak chiral Lagrangian with one light Higgs.
We consider the scalar sector of the effective non-linear electroweak Lagrangian with a light "Higgs" particle, up to four derivatives in the chiral expansion. The complete off-shell renormalization procedure is implemented, including one loop corrections stemming from the leading two-derivative terms, for finite Higgs mass. This determines the complete set of independent chiral invariant scalar counterterms required for consistency; these include bosonic operators often disregarded. Furthermore, new counterterms involving the Higgs particle which are apparently chiral non-invariant are identi…
We use renormalization as a tool to extract universal features of the NN interaction in quark and soliton nucleon models, having the same long distance behaviour but different short distance components. While fine tuning conditions in the models make difficult to fit NN data, the introduction of suitable renormalization conditions supresses the short distance sensitivity. Departures from universality are equivalent to extracting information on the model nucleon structure.
Starting from the one-loop divergences we obtained previously, we work out the renormalization of the Higgs-Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian explicitly and in detail. This includes the renormalization of the lowest-order Lagrangian, as well as the decomposition of the remaining divergences into a complete basis of next-to-leading-order counterterms. We provide the list of the corresponding beta functions. We show how our results match the one-loop renormalization of some of the dimension-6 operators in SMEFT. We further point out differences with related work in the literature and discuss them. A…
The use of the equations of motion and meson field redefinitions allows the simplification of the subleading operators required in the one-loop resonance chiral theory calculation of the pi pi vector form-factor. The study of the renormalization group equations of the relevant parameters shows the existence of an infrared fixed point for all the couplings. It is important to remark that this result does not rely on the high-energy form-factor constraints, which are often considered in other works. The possibility of developing a perturbative 1/Nc expansion in the slow running region around the…
We use the Polyakov loop coupled quark-meson model to approximate low energy QCD and present results for the chiral and deconfinement transitions in the presence of a constant magnetic background $B$ at finite temperature $T$ and baryon chemical potential $μ_B$. We investigate effects of various gluoni potentials on the deconfinement transition with and without a fermionic backreaction at finite $B$. Additionally we investigate the effect of the Polyakov loop on the chiral phase transition, finding that magnetic catalysis at low $μ_B$ is present, but weakened by the Polyakov loop.
We perform the leading one-loop renormalization of the chiral Lagrangian for spinless matter fields living in the fundamental representation of SU(N). The Lagrangian can also be applied to any theory with a spontaneous symmetry breaking of $SU(N)_L\times SU(N)_R$ to $SU(N)_V$ and spinless matter fields in the fundamental representation. For QCD, the matter fields can be kaons or pseudoscalar heavy mesons. Using the background field method and heat kernel expansion techniques, the divergences of the one-loop effective generating functional for correlation functions of single matter fields are c…
We compute the phase diagram of the quark-meson model at finite temperature, finite baryon chemical potential $μ_B=3μ$ and constant external magnetic field $B$, using the functional renormalization group. Our results show that the critical temperature increases as a function of $B$ at $μ=0$, but for values $μ$ larger than about 210-225 MeV, the opposite behavior is realized. As the magnetic field increases, the critical point $(T^*,μ^*)$ moves from large $μ$, small $T$ towards small $μ$, larger $T$ in the $μ$--$T$ phase diagram.
I discuss the progress we have made on modifying Weinberg's prescription for chiral nuclear forces, using renormalization group invariance as the guideline. Some of the published results are presented.
The use of the equations of motion and meson field redefinitions allows the development of a simplified resonance chiral theory lagrangian: terms including resonance fields and a large number of derivatives can be reduced into corresponding O(p2) resonance operators, containing the lowest possible number of derivatives. This is shown by means of the explicit computation of the pion vector form-factor up to next-to-leading order in 1/Nc. The study of the renormalization group equations for the corresponding couplings demonstrates the existence of an infrared fixed point in the resonance theory.…
We apply the functional renormalization-group (FRG) equation to analyze the nature of the QCD critical point beyond the mean-field approximation by taking into consideration the fact that the soft mode associated with the QCD critical point is a linear combination of fluctuations of the chiral condensate and the quark-number density, rather than the pure chiral fluctuations. We first construct an extended quark-meson model in which a new field corresponding to quark-number density is introduced to the conventional one composed of the chiral fields sigma, pi and the quarks. The fluctuations of …
We study in detail various aspects of the renormalization of the spin-1 resonance propagator in the effective field theory framework. First, we briefly review the formalisms for the description of spin-1 resonances in the path integral formulation with the stress on the issue of propagating degrees of freedom. Then we calculate the one-loop 1-- meson self-energy within the Resonance chiral theory in the chiral limit using different methods for the description of spin-one particles, namely the Proca field, antisymmetric tensor field and the first order formalisms. We discuss in detail technical…
We consider the general chiral effective action which parametrizes the nonlinear realization of the spontaneous breaking of the electroweak symmetry with a light Higgs, and compute the one-loop ultraviolet divergences coming from Higgs and electroweak Goldstone fluctuations using the background field method. The renormalization of the divergences is carried out through operators of next-to-leading order in the chiral counting, i.e. of O(p^4). Being of the same order in power counting, the logarithmic corrections linked to these divergences can be as important as the tree-level contributions fr…
Action principles, restoration of BRS symmetry and the renormalization group equation for chiral non-Abelian gauge theories in dimensional renormalization with a non-anticommuting $γ_5$
Phase transition in U(n)xU(n) models is investigated for arbitrary flavor number n. We present a nonperturbative, 3+1 dimensional finite temperature treatment of obtaining the effective potential, based on a chiral invariant expansion of the functional renormalization group flows. The obtained tower of equations is similar but not identical to that of the Dyson-Schwinger hierarchy and has to be truncated for practical purposes. We investigate the finite temperature behavior of the system in an expansive set of the parameter space for n = 2, 3, 4 and also perform a large-n analysis. Our method …
This work presents a first full one-loop computation of vector boson scattering (VBS) within the non-linear effective field theory given by the bosonic sector of the usually called electroweak chiral Lagrangian (EChL). The computation is performed in the most general case of covariant $R_ξ$ gauges and is compared through all this work with the Standard Model case, whose computation in these covariant gauges is also novel and is presented also here. The calculation of the one-loop VBS amplitude is performed using the diagrammatic method by means of the one-particle-irreducible (1PI) Green funct…
This review provides a detailed introduction to chiral gauge theories, renormalization theory, and the application of dimensional regularization with the non-anticommuting BMHV scheme for $γ_5$. One goal is to show how chiral gauge theories can be renormalized despite the spurious breaking of gauge invariance and how to obtain the required symmetry-restoring counterterms. A second goal is to familiarize the reader with the theoretical basis of the renormalization of chiral gauge theories, the theorems that guarantee the existence of renormalized chiral gauge theories at all orders as consisten…
The electroweak sector of the Standard Model can be formulated in a way similar to Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT), but extended by a singlet scalar. The resulting effective field theory (EFT) is called Higgs-Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian (EWCh$\mathcal{L}$) and is the most general approach to new physics in the Higgs sector. It solely assumes the pattern of symmetry breaking leading to the three electroweak Goldstone bosons (i.e. massive $W$ and $Z$) and the existence of a Higgs-like scalar particle. The power counting of the EWCh$\mathcal{L}$ is given by a generalization of the momentum ex…
The baryon axial vector current is computed at one-loop order in large-N_c baryon chiral perturbation theory, where N_c is the number of colors. Loop graphs with octet and decuplet intermediate states are systematically incorporated into the analysis and the effects of the decuplet-octet mass difference and SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking are accounted for. As expected, large-N_c cancellations between different one-loop graphs are observed as a consequence of the large-N_c spin-flavor symmetry of QCD baryons. Fitting our analytical formulas against experimental data on baryon semileptonic decay…
In nuclear chiral perturbation theory (ChPT), an operator is defined in a space with a cutoff which may be varied within a certain range. The operator runs as a result of the variation of the cutoff [renormalization group (RG) running]. In order for ChPT to be useful, the operator should run in a way consistent with the counting rule; that is, the running of chiral counter terms have to be of natural size. We vary the cutoff using the Wilsonian renormalization group (WRG) equation, and examine this consistency. As an example, we study the s-wave pion production operator for NN\to d pi, derived…
