The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) is a liquid-scintillator satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) to measure the reference reactor neutrino spectrum with unprecented energy resolution. We use inhomogeous Poisson process and Tweedie generalized linear model (GLM) to characterize the detector response and the charge distribution of a SiPM. We develop a pure probabilistic model for time and charge of SiPMs from first principles to reconstruct point-like events in the TAO central detector. Thanks to our precise model and the high photo-coverage and quantum efficiency of the SiPM tiles at TAO, we achieve vertex position resolution better than 20mm, energy resolution of about 2% at 1MeV and <0.5% non-uniformity, marking the world's best performance of liquid scintillator detectors. With such resolution, we perceive MeV events to exhibit track effects. It opens up an exciting possibility of computed tracking calorimeter for unsegmented liquid scintillator detector like TAO. Our methodology is applicable to other experiments that utilize PMTs for time and charge readouts.
The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) is a ton-level liquid scintillator detector to be placed at 30\,m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant for precise reactor antineutrino spectrum measurements. One important background for TAO physics are the interactions of ambient neutrons that can penetrate its outer shieldings. The neutrons fluence and energy spectrum are measured with a Bonner sphere spectrometer. Data is unfolded with the iterative Maximum-Likelihood Expectation-Maximization (MLEM) method. A simulation based on Geant4 is performed to provide the initial input spectrum t…

We propose to measure the coherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS) using a dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber (TPC) with 200kg fiducial mass. The detector is expected to be adjacent to the JUNO-TAO experiment and to be about 35m from a reactor core with 4.6GW thermal power at Taishan. The antineutrino flux is approximately 6$\times10^{12}$cm$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ at this location, leading to more than 11,000 coherent scattering events per day in the fiducial mass. However, the nuclear recoil energies concentrate in the sub-keV region, corresponding to less than ten ionisati…
Short-baseline reactor antineutrino experiments with shallow overburden usually have large cosmogenic neutron backgrounds. The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) is a ton-level liquid scintillator detector located at about 30 m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. It will measure the reactor antineutrino spectrum with high precision and high energy resolution to provide a reference spectrum for JUNO and other reactor antineutrino experiments, and provide a benchmark measurement to test nuclear databases. Background is one of the critical concerns of TAO since the overburden is j…
The energy resolution is crucial for the reactor neutrino experiments which aims to determine neutrino mass ordering by precise measurement of the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum. A non-negligible effect in the antineutrino energy resolution is the spread of the kinetic energy of the recoiled neutron and the corresponding positron when detecting the antineutrinos via Inverse Beta-Decay (IBD) reaction. The emission direction of the produced positron in IBD reaction can be used to estimate the kinetic energy of neutron and thus the reconstructed antineutrino energy resolution can be improve…
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory is a multipurpose neutrino experiment designed to determine neutrino mass hierarchy and precisely measure oscillation parameters by detecting reactor neutrinos from the Yangjiang and Taishan Nuclear Power Plants, observe supernova neutrinos, study the atmospheric, solar neutrinos and geo-neutrinos, and perform exotic searches, with a 20-thousand-ton liquid scintillator detector of unprecedented 3\% energy resolution (at 1 MeV) at 700-meter deep underground. In this proceeding, the subsystems of the experiment, including the cental detector, the onl…
The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (JUNO-TAO, or TAO) is a satellite detector for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). Located near the Taishan reactor, TAO independently measures the reactor's antineutrino energy spectrum with unprecedented energy resolution. To achieve this goal, energy response must be well calibrated. Using the Automated Calibration Unit (ACU) and the Cable Loop System (CLS) of TAO, multiple radioactive sources are deployed to various positions in the detector to perform a precise calibration of energy response. The non-linear energy response can be cont…
A liquid scintillator (LS) is developed for the Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO), a ton-level neutrino detector to measure the reactor antineutrino spectrum with sub-percent energy resolution by adopting Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) as photosensor. To reduce the dark noise of SiPMs to an acceptable level, the LS has to work at -50 degree or lower. A customized apparatus based on a charge-coupled device (CCD) is developed to study the transparency of the liquid samples in a cryostat. We find that the water content in LS results in transparency degradation at low temperature, which can…

The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) is proposed to first use a cold liquid scintillator detector (-50~$^\circ$C) equipped with large-area silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) ($\sim$10~m$^2$) to precisely measure the reactor antineutrino spectrum with a record energy resolution of < 2\% at 1 MeV. The KLauS ASIC shows excellent performance at room temperature and is a potential readout solution for TAO. In this work, we report evaluations of the fifth version of the KLauS ASIC (KLauS5) from room temperature to -50~$^\circ$C with inputs of injected charge or SiPMs. Our results show that KLauS…
SoLid is a short baseline neutrino experiment, which is currently operating a 1.6 tons detector at the SCK$\bullet$CEN BR2 research reactor in Belgium. SoLid will address the study of the so called Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly (RAA), whose origin could be the existence of a light sterile neutrino state with a mass around the eV scale. In addition, it will perform a new measurement of the antineutrino energy spectrum produced by the $^{235}$U isotope, which will help in the understanding of the 5-MeV distortion observed in previous reactor antineutrino experiments. SoLid leverages a novel techn…
Measuring the neutrino mixing parameter \ensuremath{\sin^2θ_{13}} to the sub-percent precision level could be necessary in the next ten years for the precision unitary test of the PMNS matrix. In this work, we discuss the possibility of such a measurement with reactor antineutrinos. We find that a single liquid scintillator detector on a reasonable scale could achieve the goal. We propose to install a detector of $\sim10$\% energy resolution at about 2.0~km from the reactors with a JUNO-like overburden. The integrated luminosity requirement is about 150~${\rm kton}\cdot {\rm GW}\cdot {\rm year…
We compare existing segmented plastic antineutrino detectors with our new geometrically improved design for antineutrino detection and light collection efficiency. The purpose of this study is to determine the most suitable design style for remote reactor monitoring in the context of nuclear safeguards. Using Monte Carlo based GEANT4 simulation package, we perform detector simulation based on two prominent experiments: Plastic antineutrino detector array (Panda) and Core monitoring by reactor antineutrino detector (Cormorad). In addition to these two well-known designs, another concept, the Pa…
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) project aims at probing, at the same time, the two main frequencies of three-flavor neutrino oscillations, as well as their interference related to the mass ordering (normal or inverted), at a distance of ~53 km from two powerful reactor complexes in China, at Yangjiang and Taishan. In the latter complex, the unoscillated spectrum from one reactor core is planned to be closely monitored by the Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO), expected to have better resolution (x 1/2) and higher statistics (x 30) than JUNO. In the context of neutrino …
The Daya Bay experiment measures sin^2 2θ_13 using functionally identical antineutrino detectors located at distances of 300 to 2000 meters from the Daya Bay nuclear power complex. Each detector consists of three nested fluid volumes surrounded by photomultiplier tubes. These volumes are coupled to overflow tanks on top of the detector to allow for thermal expansion of the liquid. Antineutrinos are detected through the inverse beta decay reaction on the proton-rich scintillator target. A precise and continuous measurement of the detector's central target mass is achieved by monitoring the the …

We report a measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment with nearly 4 million reactor $\overlineν_{e}$ inverse beta decay candidates observed over 1958 days of data collection. The installation of a Flash-ADC readout system and a special calibration campaign using different source enclosures reduce uncertainties in the absolute energy calibration to less than 0.5% for visible energies larger than 2 MeV. The uncertainty in the cosmogenic $^9$Li and $^8$He background is reduced from 45% to 30% in the near detectors. A detailed investigation of t…
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy using an underground liquid scintillator detector. It is located 53 km away from both Yangjiang and Taishan Nuclear Power Plants in Guangdong, China. The experimental hall, spanning more than 50 meters, is under a granite mountain of over 700 m overburden. Within six years of running, the detection of reactor antineutrinos can resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy at a confidence level of 3-4$σ$, and determine neutrino oscillation parameters $\sin^2θ_{12}$, $Δm^2_{21}$, and $|Δm^2_{ee}|$ to …
