We investigate theoretically a one-dimensional semiconductor-superconductor (SM-SC) heterostructure with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and parallel Zeeman field in the presence of disorder generated by random charged impurities and identify the optimal regimes for realizing topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes. Using a Green's function approach, we show that upon increasing the disorder strength the stable topological superconducting phase characterized by robust end-to-end Majorana correlations "migrates" toward larger values of the Zeeman field and can be stabilized by increasing the effective SM-SC coupling. Based on these findings, we propose a strategy for accessing a regime characterized by well-separated Majorana zero modes that is based on (a) enhancing the strength of the effective SM-SC coupling (e.g., through interface engineering) and (b) expanding the range of accessible Zeeman fields (e.g., by enhancing the gyromagnetic ratio or optimizing the parent superconductor, to enable the application of larger magnetic fields). While this strategy may still require some reduction of the disorder strength, this requirement is significantly less strict than the corresponding requirement in a strategy that focuses exclusively on disorder reduction.
Kekulé phases are Peierls-like lattice distortions in graphene that are predicted to host novel electronic states beyond graphene (1-8). Although the Kekulé phases are realized in graphene through introducing electron-electron interactions at high magnetic fields (9-11) or adatom superlattices (12-15), it is still an extremely challenge to obtain large-area graphene Kekulé phases in experiment. Here we demonstrate that sample-wide Kekulé distortions in graphene can be stabilized by using transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) as substrates and the induced Kekulé orders are quite robust in the…
We report a detailed study of the influence of the electron-electron interaction on physical observables (conductance, etc.) of a disordered electron liquid in double quantum well heterostructure. We find that even in the case of common elastic scattering off electrons in both quantum wells, the asymmetry in the electron-electron interaction across and within quantum wells decouples them at low temperatures. Our results are in quantitative agreement with recent transport experiments on the gated double quantum well Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As/GaAs/Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$As heterostructures.
We study nuclear relaxation in the presence of localized electrons in a two-dimensional electron gas in a disordered delta-doped semiconductor heterostructure and show that this method can reliably probe their magnetic interactions and possible long-range order. In contrast, we argue that transport measurements, the commonly employed tool, may not sometimes distinguish between spatial disorder and long-range order. We illustrate the utility of using the nuclear relaxation method to detect long-range order by analyzing a recent proposal made on the basis of transport measurements, on the sponta…

The hydrogenated $\rm{Sb}$ monolayer epitaxially grown on a $\rm{LaFeO_3}$ substrate is a novel type of two-dimensional material hosting quantum spin-quantum anomalous Hall (QS-QAH) states. For a device formed by $\rm{Sb}$ monolayer ribbon, the QAH edge states, belong to a single valley, are located at opposite edges of the ribbon. The QSH edge states, on the other hand, belong to the other valley and are distributed in a very narrow region at the same edge. In this paper, we find such material can be used to fabricate perfect valley filter. Adopting scattering matrix method and Green's functi…
We analyze the absorption lineshape for inter-subband transitions in disordered quasi 2D heterostructures by an exact calculation. The intra-subband scatterings control the central peak while the tails of the absorption line are dominated by the inter-subband scattering terms. Our numerical study quantitatively assesses the magnitude of the free carrier absorption. The accuracy of different models currently used for gain/absorption is discussed.
Antiferromagnets (AFMs) with zero net magnetization are proposed as active elements in future spintronic devices. Depending on the critical thickness of the AFM thin films and the measurement temperature, bimetallic Mn-based alloys and transition metal oxide-based AFMs can host various coexisting ordered, disordered, and frustrated AFM phases. Such coexisting phases in the exchange coupled ferromagnetic (FM)/AFM-based heterostructures can result in unusual magnetic and magnetotransport phenomena. Here, we integrate chemically disordered AFM IrMn3 thin films with coexisting AFM phases into comp…
We numerically investigate the magnon-mediated spin transport and scaling behaviors of a nonmagnetic metal/nonmagnetic metal/ferromagnetic insulator (NM/NM/FI) heterostructure in the presence of Anderson disorders. For the two-dimensional (2D) NM/NM/FI system, an enhancement of spin conductance in the weak disorder regime is found due to the increasing of the interfacial density of states (DOS) at NM/FI interface. As a result, a new scaling regime is uncovered in the metallic regime where the spin conductance fluctuation rms(G) scales linearly with the average spin conductance <G>, independent…
Magnetic skyrmions $-$ localized chiral spin structures $-$ show great promise for spintronic applications. The recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials opened new opportunities for exploring such topological spin structures in atomically thin van der Waals (vdW) materials. Despite recent progress in stabilizing metastable skyrmions in 2D magnets, their diameters are still beyond 100~nm and their lifetime, which is essential for applications, has not been explored yet. Here, using first-principles calculations and atomistic spin simulations, we predict that compressive mecha…
We present KITE, a general purpose open-source tight-binding software for accurate real-space simulations of electronic structure and quantum transport properties of large-scale molecular and condensed systems with tens of billions of atomic orbitals (N~10^10). KITE's core is written in C++, with a versatile Python-based interface, and is fully optimised for shared memory multi-node CPU architectures, thus scalable, efficient and fast. At the core of KITE is a seamless spectral expansion of lattice Green's functions, which enables large-scale calculations of generic target functions with unifo…
Buried-channel semiconductor heterostructures are an archetype material platform to fabricate gated semiconductor quantum devices. Sharp confinement potential is obtained by positioning the channel near the surface, however nearby surface states degrade the electrical properties of the starting material. In this paper we demonstrate a two-dimensional hole gas of high mobility ($5\times 10^{5}$ cm$^2$/Vs) in a very shallow strained germanium channel, which is located only 22 nm below the surface. This high mobility leads to mean free paths $\approx6 μm$, setting new benchmarks for holes in shal…

Relaxation of soft modes (e.g. charge density in gated semiconductor heterostructures, spin density in the presence of magnetic field) slowed down by disorder may lead to giant enhancement of energy transfer (cooling power) between overheated electrons and phonons at low bath temperature. We show that in strongly disordered systems with time-reversal symmetry broken by external or intrinsic exchange magnetic field the cooling power can be greatly enhanced. The enhancement factor as large as $10^{2}$ at magnetic field $B \sim 10$ Tesla in 2D {\rm InSb} films is predicted. A similar enhancement …
By using the momentum-space Lanczos recursive method which considers rigorously all multiple-scattering events, we unveil that the non-perturbative disorder effect has dramatic impact on the charge transport of a two-dimensional electron system with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in the low-density region. Our simulations find a power-law dependence of the dc longitudinal conductivity on the carrier density, with the exponent linearly dependent on the Rashba spin-orbit strength but independent of the disorder strength. Therefore, the classical charge transport influenced by complicated multiple-sc…
Twisting moiré heterostructures to the flatband regime allows for the formation of strongly correlated quantum states, since the dramatic reduction of the bandwidth can cause the residual electronic interactions to set the principal energy scale. An effective description for such correlated moiré heterostructures, derived in the strong-coupling limit at integer filling, generically leads to spin-valley Heisenberg models. Here we explore the emergence and stability of spin liquid behavior in an SU(2)$^{\mathrm{spin}}\otimes$SU(2)$^{\mathrm{valley}}$ Heisenberg model upon inclusion of Hund's-ind…
In disordered systems, the hopping conductivity regime is usually realized at low temperatures where spin-related phenomena differ strongly from the case of delocalized carriers. We develop the unified microscopic theory of current induced spin orientation, spin-galvanic and spin-Hall effects for the two-dimensional hopping regime. We show that the corresponding susceptibilities are proportional to each other and determined by the interplay between the drift and the diffusion spin currents. Estimations are made for realistic semiconductor heterostructures using the percolation theory. We show …
Magnet-superconductor hybrid heterostructures constitute a promising candidate system for the quantum engineering of chiral topological superconductivity. Here, we investigate the stability of their topological phases in the presence of various types of potential and magnetic disorder. In particular we consider magnetic disorder in the coupling strength and spin-orientation, as well as percolation type disorder representing missing magnetic moments. We show that potential disorder leads to the weakest suppression of topological phases, while percolation disorder leads to their strongest suppre…
We study theoretically and experimentally the frequency and temperature dependence of resistivity noise in semiconductor heterostructures delta-doped by Mn. The resistivity noise is observed to be non-monotonous as a function of frequency. As a function of temperature, the noise increases by two orders of magnitude for a resistivity increase of about 50%. We study two possible sources of resistivity noise -- dynamic spin fluctuations and charge fluctuations, and find that dynamic spin fluctuations are more relevant for the observed noise data. The frequency and temperature dependence of resist…
We study theoretically the statistical properties of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between localized magnetic moments in a disordered two-dimensional electron gas with both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. Averaging over disorder, the static spin susceptibility tensor is evaluated diagrammatically in the mesoscopic (phase-coherent) regime. The disorder-averaged susceptibility leads to a twisted exchange interaction suppressed exponentially with distance, whereas the second-order correlations, which determine the fluctuations (variance) of the RKKY energy, dec…
In an ideal InAs/GaSb bilayer of appropriate dimension in-plane electron and hole bands overlap and hybridize, and a topologically non-trivial, or quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator, phase is predicted to exist. The in-plane dispersion's potential landscape, however, is subject to microscopic perturbations originating from material imperfections. In this work, the effect of disorder on the electronic structure of InAs/GaSb bilayers was studied by the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the resistance of a dual-gated heterostructures gate-tuned through the inverted to normal gap regimes…

Topological materials with large spin-orbit coupling and immunity to disorder-induced symmetry breaking show great promise for efficiently converting charge to spin. Here, we report that long-range disordered sputtered WTex thin films exhibit local chemical and structural order as those of Weyl semimetal WTe2 and conduction behavior that is consistent with semi-metallic Weyl fermion. We find large charge-to-spin conversion properties and electrical conductivity in thermally annealed sputtered WTex films that are comparable with those in crystalline WTe2 flakes. Besides, the strength of unidire…
We study thermal and charge transport in a three-terminal setup consisting of one superconducting and two ferromagnetic contacts. We predict that the simultaneous presence of spin filtering and of spin- dependent scattering phase shifts at each of the two interfaces will lead to very large nonlocal thermo- electric effects both in clean and in disordered systems. The symmetries of thermal and electric transport coefficients are related to fundamental thermodynamic principles by the Onsager reciprocity. Our results show that a nonlocal version of the Onsager relations for thermoelectric current…
The topological Hall effect is used extensively to study chiral spin textures in various materials. However, the factors controlling its magnitude in technologically-relevant thin films remain uncertain. Using variable temperature magnetotransport and real-space magnetic imaging in a series of Ir/Fe/Co/Pt heterostructures, here we report that the chiral spin fluctuations at the phase boundary between isolated skyrmions and a disordered skyrmion lattice result in a power-law enhancement of the topological Hall resistivity by up to three orders of magnitude. Our work reveals the dominant role of…
Combining topological insulators (TIs) and magnetic materials in heterostructures is crucial for advancing spin-based electronics. Magnetic insulators (MIs) can be deposited on TIs using the spin-spray process, which is a unique non-vacuum, low-temperature growth process. TIs have highly reactive surfaces that oxidize upon exposure to atmosphere, making it challenging to grow spin-spray ferrites on TIs. In this work, it is demonstrated that a thin titanium capping layer on TI, followed by oxidation in atmosphere to produce a thin TiOx interfacial layer, protects the TI surface, without signifi…
