Recently, Sawin and Wood (arXiv:math/2210.06279) proved a formula for the distribution of a random abelian group $G$ in terms of its $H$-moments $\mathbb{E} [\#\operatorname{Sur}(G,H)]$. We show that properties of Macdonald polynomials yield an alternate proof.
A generating pair $x, y$ for a group $G$ is said to be \textbf{\textit{symmetric}} if there exists an automorphism $φ_{x,y}$ of $G$ inverting both $x$ and $y$, that is, $x^{φ_{x,y}}=x^{-1}$ and $y^{φ_{x,y}}=y^{-1}$. Similarly, a group $G$ is said to be \textbf{\textit{strongly symmetric}} if $G$ can be generated with two elements and if all generating pairs of $G$ are symmetric. In this paper we classify the finite strongly symmetric non-abelian simple groups. Combinatorially, these are the finite non-abelian simple groups $G$ such that every orientably regular hypermap with monodromy group $G…
Finite connected cubic symmetric graphs of girth 6 have been classified by K. Kutnar and D. Marušič, in particular, each of these graphs has an abelian automorphism group with two orbits on the vertex set. In this paper all cubic symmetric graphs with the latter property are determined. In particular, with the exception of the graphs K_4, K_{3,3}, Q_3, GP(5,2), GP(10,2), F40 and GP(24,5), all the obtained graphs are of girth 6.
A graph $Γ$ is said to be symmetric if its automorphism group $\rm Aut(Γ)$ acts transitively on the arc set of $Γ$. In this paper, we show that if $Γ$ is a finite connected heptavalent symmetric graph with solvable stabilizer admitting a vertex-transitive non-abelian simple group $G$ of automorphisms, then either $G$ is normal in $\rm Aut(Γ)$, or $\rm Aut(Γ)$ contains a non-abelian simple normal subgroup $T$ such that $G\leq T$ and $(G,T)$ is explicitly given as one of $11$ possible exception pairs of non-abelian simple groups. Furthermore, if $G$ is regular on the vertex set of $Γ$ then the e…
Let $Γ$ be a graph and let $G$ be a group of automorphisms of $Γ$. The graph $Γ$ is called $G$-normal if $G$ is normal in the automorphism group of $Γ$. Let $T$ be a finite non-abelian simple group and let $G = T^l$ with $l\geq 1$. In this paper we prove that if every connected pentavalent symmetric $T$-vertex-transitive graph is $T$-normal, then every connected pentavalent symmetric $G$-vertex-transitive graph is $G$-normal. This result, among others, implies that every connected pentavalent symmetric $G$-vertex-transitive graph is $G$-normal except $T$ is one of $57$ simple groups. Furthermo…
We show the existence of an absolute constant $α>0$ such that, for every $k \geq 3$, $G:=\mathop{\mathrm{Sym}}(k)$, and for every $H \leqslant G$ of index at least $3$, one has $|H/[H,H]| \leq |G:H|^{α/ \log \log |G:H|}$. This inequality is the best possible for the symmetric groups, and we conjecture that it is the best possible for every family of arbitrarily large finite groups.
Let g=g_0+g_1 be a Z_2-graded Lie algebra. We study the posets of abelian subalgebras of g_1 which are stable w.r.t. a Borel subalgebra of g_0. In particular, we find out a natural parametrization of maximal elements and dimension formulas for them. We recover as special cases several results of Kostant, Panyushev, Suter.
Denoting by Sigma(S) the set of subset sums of a subset S of a finite abelian group G, we prove that |Sigma(S)| >= |S|(|S|+2)/4-1 whenever S is symmetric, |G| is odd and Sigma(S) is aperiodic. Up to an additive constant of 2 this result is best possible, and we obtain the stronger (exact best possible) bound in almost all cases. We prove similar results in the case |G| is even. Our proof requires us to extend a theorem of Olson on the number of subset sums of anti-symmetric subsets S from the case of Z_p to the case of a general finite abelian group. To do so, we adapt Olson's method using a g…
We establish lower bounds for the $p$-divisibility of the quantity $\#\operatorname{Hom}(G,GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q))$, the number of homomorphisms from $G$ to a general linear group, where $G$ is an Abelian $p$-group. This is in analogy to the result of Krattenthaler and Müller \cite{MR3383810} on homomorphisms to symmetric groups.
A map is a 2-cell decomposition of an orientable closed surface. A dessin is a bipartite map with a fixed colouring of vertices. A dessin is regular if its group of colour- and orientation-preserving automorphisms acts transitively on the edges, and a regular dessin is symmetric if it admits an additional external symmetry transposing the vertex colours. Regular dessins with nilpotent automorphism groups are investigated. We show that each such dessin is a parallel product of regular dessins whose automorphism groups are the Sylow subgroups. Regular and symmetric dessins with abelian automorph…
We determine the BP-module structure, mod higher filtration, of the main part of the BP-homology of elementary abelian 2-groups. The action is related to symmetric polynomials and to Dickson invariants.
The moduli space of $n$ chains in the plane with generic side lengths that terminate on a fixed line is a smooth, closed manifold of dimension $n-1$. This manifold is also equipped with a locally standard action of $\mathbb{Z}_2^{n-1}$. The orbit space of this action is a simple polytope called the moment polytope. Interestingly, this manifold is also the fixed point set of an involution on a toric manifold known as the abelian polygon space. In this article we show that the moment polytope of the moduli space of chains is completely characterized by the combinatorial data, called the \emph{sh…
We consider the problem of counting commuting r-tuples of elements of the symmetric group S_n, i.e. computing |Hom(Z^r,S_n)|. The cases r=1,2 are well-known; a product formula for the case r=3 was conjectured by Adams-Watters and later proved by Britnell. In this note we solve the problem for arbitrary r.
We show that if G is a group and A is a finite subset of G with |A^2| < K|A|, then for all k there is a symmetric neighbourhood of the identity S with S^k a subset of A^2A^{-2} and |S| > exp(-K^{O(k)})|A|.
We define Bush-type generalized Hadamard matrices over abelian groups and construct symmetric Bush-type generalized Hadamard matrices over the additive group of finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, $q$ a prime power. We then show and study an association scheme obtained from such generalized Hadamard matrices.
