The formation of binary stars is highly influenced by magnetic fields, which play a crucial role in transporting angular momentum. We conducted three-dimensional numerical simulations of binary star accretion via a circumbinary disk, taking into account a magnetic field perpendicular to the disk and an infalling envelope. Our simulations reproduce the following phenomena: (1) spiral arms associated with circumstellar disks, (2) turbulence in the circumbinary disk, induced by magneto-rotational instability (MRI), (3) a fast outflow launched from each circumstellar disk, and (4) a slow outflow from the circumbinary disk. The binary models exhibit a higher $α$-parameter than the corresponding single star models, indicating that the binary stars enhance MRI turbulence. Moreover, an infalling envelope also enhance the turbulence, leading to a high $α$-parameter. While the spiral arms promotes radial flow, causing transfer of mass and angular momentum within the circumbinary disk, the MRI turbulence and outflows are main drivers of angular momentum transfer to reduce the specific angular momentum of the system.
We examine an Infrared Dark Cloud (IRDC) at high spatial resolution as a means to study rotation, outflow, and infall at the onset of massive star formation. Submillimeter Array observations combined with IRAM 30 meter data in 12CO(2--1) reveal the outflow orientation in the IRDC 18223-3 region, and PdBI 3 mm observations confirm this orientation in other molecular species. The implication of the outflow's presence is that an accretion disk is feeding it, so using high density tracers such as C18O, N2H+, and CH3OH, we looked for indications of a velocity gradient perpendicular to the outflow d…
We perform a three-dimensional nested-grid radiation magneto-hydrodynamics (RMHD) simulation with self-gravity to study the early phase of the low-mass star formation process from a rotating molecular cloud core to a first adiabatic core just before the second collapse begins. Radiation transfer is handled with the flux-limited diffusion approximation, operator-splitting and implicit time-integrator. In the RMHD simulation, the outer region of the first core attains a higher entropy and the size of first core is larger than that in the magnetohydrodynamics simulations with the barotropic appro…
Many types of stars have strong magnetic fields that can dynamically influence the flow of circumstellar matter. In stars with accretion disks, the stellar magnetic field can truncate the inner disk and determine the paths that matter can take to flow onto the star. These paths are different in stars with different magnetospheres and periods of rotation. External field lines of the magnetosphere may inflate and produce favorable conditions for outflows from the disk-magnetosphere boundary. Outflows can be particularly strong in the propeller regime, wherein a star rotates more rapidly than the…
We investigate outflows from the disk-magnetosphere boundary of rotating magnetized stars in cases where the magnetic field of a star is bunched into an X-type configuration using axisymmetric and full 3D MHD simulations. Such configuration appears if viscosity in the disk is larger than diffusivity, or if the accretion rate in the disk is enhanced. Conical outflows flow from the inner edge of the disk to a narrow shell with an opening angle 30-45 degrees. Outflows carry 0.1-0.3 of the disk mass and part of the disk's angular momentum outward. Conical outflows appear around stars of different …
We assess the importance of the magneto-rotational instability in core-collapse supernovae by an analysis of the growth rates of unstable modes in typical post-collapse systems and by numerical simulations of simplified models. The interplay of differential rotation and thermal stratification defines different instability regimes which we confirm in our simulations. We investigate the termination of the growth of the MRI by parasitic instabilities, establish scaling laws characterising the termination amplitude, and study the long-term evolution of the saturated turbulent state.
We have performed smoothed particle radiation magnetohydrodynamics (SPRMHD) simulations of the collapse of rotating, magnetised molecular cloud cores to form protostars. The calculations follow the formation and evolution of the first hydrostatic core, the collapse to form a stellar core, the launching of outflows from both the first hydrostatic core and stellar cores, and the breakout of the stellar outflow from the remnant of the first core. We investigate the roles of magnetic fields and thermal feedback on the outflow launching process, finding that both magnetic and thermal forces contrib…
The linear instability of thin, vertically-isothermal Keplerian discs, under the influence of axial magnetic field is investigated. Solutions of the stability problem are found explicitly by asymptotic expansions in the small aspect ratio of the disc. It is shown that the perturbations are decoupled into in-plane and vertical modes. Exact expressions for the growth rates as well as the number of unstable modes are derived. Those are the discrete counterpart of the continuous infinite homogeneous cylinder magnetorotational (MRI) spectrum. In addition, a weakly nonlinear analysis of the MRI is p…
Magnetic confinement of stellar winds leads to the formation of magnetospheres, which can be sculpted into Centrifugal Magnetospheres (CMs) by rotational support of the corotating plasma. The conditions required for the CMs of magnetic early B-type stars to yield detectable emission in H$α$ -- the principal diagnostic of these structures -- are poorly constrained. A key reason is that no detailed study of the magnetic and rotational evolution of this population has yet been performed. Using newly determined rotational periods, modern magnetic measurements, and atmospheric parameters determined…
We present mid-infrared spectral maps of the NGC 1333 star forming region, obtained with the the Infrared Spectrometer on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. Eight pure H2 rotational lines, from S (0) to S (7), are detected and mapped. The H2 emission appears to be associated with the warm gas shocked by the multiple outflows present in the region. A comparison between the observed intensities and the predictions of detailed shock models indicates that the emission arises in both slow (12 - 24 km/s) and fast (36 - 53 km/s) C-type shocks with an initial ortho-to-para ratio of ~ 1. The present H2…
We consider the pinning of superfluid (neutron) vortices to magnetic fluxtubes associated with a type II (proton) superconductor in neutron star cores. We demonstrate that core pinning affects the spin-down of the system significantly, and discuss implications for regular radio pulsars and magnetars. We find that magnetars are likely to be in the pinning regime, while most radio pulsars are not. This suggests that the currently inferred magnetic field for magnetars may be overestimated. We also obtain a new timescale for the magnetic field evolution which could be associated with the observed …
In a comprehensive convergence study, we investigate the computational conditions necessary to resolve disk formation and jet-launching processes, and analyze possible caveats. We explore the magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) processes of the collapse of massive prestellar cores in detail, including an analysis of the forces involved and their temporal evolution for up to two free-fall times. We conduct MHD simulations, combining nonideal MHD, self-gravity, and very high resolutions as they have never been achieved before. Our setup includes a 100 Msol cloud core that collapses under its own self-gra…
Evolutionary models of fast-rotating stars show that the stellar rotational velocity may approach the critical speed. Critically rotating stars cannot spin up more, therefore they lose their excess angular momentum through an equatorial outflowing disk. The radial extension of such disks is unknown, partly because we lack information about the radial variations of the viscosity. We study the magnetorotational instability, which is considered to be the origin of anomalous viscosity in outflowing disks. We used analytic calculations to study the stability of outflowing disks submerged in the mag…
We investigate the launching of outflows from the disk-magnetosphere boundary of slowly and rapidly rotating magnetized stars using axisymmetric and exploratory 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. We find long-lasting outflows in both cases. (1) In the case of slowly rotating stars, a new type of outflow, a conical wind, is found and studied in simulations. The conical winds appear in cases where the magnetic flux of the star is bunched up by the disk into an X-type configuration. The winds have the shape of a thin conical shell with a half-opening angle 30-40 degrees. The conical winds …
We present a (sub)millimeter line survey of the methanol maser outflow located in the massive star-forming region DR21(OH) carried out with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at 217/227 GHz and 337/347 GHz. We find transitions from several molecules towards the maser outflow such as CH$_3$OH, H$_2$CS, C$^{17}$O, H$^{13}$CO$^+$ and C$^{34}$S. However, with the present observations, we cannot discard the possibility that some of the observed species such as C$^{17}$O, C$^{34}$S, and H$_2$CS, might be instead associated with the compact and dusty continuum sources located in the MM2 region. Given that…
Recent spectropolarimetric observations suggest that young low-mass stars such as classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) possess relatively strong (~kG) magnetic field. This supports a scenario in which the final accretion onto the stellar surface proceeds through a magnetosphere, and the winds are formed in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) processes. We examine recent numerical simulations of magnetospheric accretions via an inclined dipole and a complex magnetic fields. The difference between a stable accretion regime, in which accretion occurs in ordered funnel streams, and an unstable regime, in which …
We investigate protostellar collapse of molecular cloud cores by numerical simulations, taking into account turbulence and magnetic fields. By using the adaptive mesh refinement technique, the collapse is followed over a wide dynamic range from the scale of a turbulent cloud core to that of the first core. The cloud core is lumpy in the low density region owing to the turbulence, while it has a smooth density distribution in the dense region produced by the collapse. The shape of the dense region depends mainly on the mass of the cloud core; a massive cloud core tends to be prolate while a les…
Rotation measurement in jets from T Tauri stars is a rather difficult task. Some jets seem to be rotating in a direction opposite to that of the underlying disk, although it is not yet clear if this affects the totality or part of the outflows. On the other hand, Ulysses data also suggest that the solar wind may rotate in two opposite ways between the northern and southern hemispheres. We show that this result is not as surprising as it may seem and that it emerges naturally from the ideal MHD equations. Specifically, counterrotating jets neither contradict the magnetocentrifugal driving of th…

Observations indicate that outflows from massive young stars are more collimated during their early evolution compared to later stages. Our paper investigates various physical processes that impacts the outflow dynamics, i.e. its acceleration and collimation. We perform axisymmetric MHD simulations particularly considering the radiation pressure exerted by the star and the disk. We have modified the PLUTO code to include radiative forces in the line-driving approximation. We launch the outflow from the innermost disk region (r < 50 AU) by magneto-centrifugal acceleration. In order to disentang…
We discuss recent progress in understanding the launching of outflows/jets from the disc-magnetosphere boundary of slowly and rapidly rotating magnetized stars. In most of the discussed models the interior of the disc is assumed to have a turbulent viscosity and magnetic diffusivity (as described by two ``alpha'' parameters), whereas the coronal region outside of the disc is treated using ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Extensive MHD simulations have established the occurrence of long-lasting outflows in both the cases of slowly and rapidly rotating stars. In the case of {\it slowly rotating…
A protostellar jet and outflow are calculated for \sim 270 yr following the protostar formation using a three dimensional magnetohydrodynamics simulation, in which both the protostar and its parent cloud are spatially resolved. A high-velocity (\sim100km/s) jet with good collimation is driven near the disk's inner edge, while a low-velocity (<10km/s) outflow with a wide opening angle appears in the outer-disk region. The high-velocity jet propagates into the low-velocity outflow, forming a nested velocity structure in which a narrow high-velocity flow is enclosed by a wide low-velocity flow. T…
The canonical theory of star formation in a magnetized environment predicts the formation of hourglass-shaped magnetic fields during the prestellar collapse phase. In protostellar cores, recent observations reveal complex and strongly distorted magnetic fields in the inner regions that are sculpted by rotation and outflows. We conduct resistive, nonideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of a protostellar core and employ the radiative transfer code POLARIS to produce synthetic polarization segment maps. Comparison of our mock-polarization maps based on the toroidal-dominated magnetic field…
We investigate the structure and dynamics of the magnetospheric accretion region and associated outflows on a scale smaller than 0.1 au around the young transitional disk system GM Aur. We monitored the variability of the system on timescales ranging from days to months, using high-resolution optical and near-infrared spectroscopy, multiwavelength photometry, and low-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy, over a total duration of six months (30 rotational cycles). We analyzed the photometric and line profile variability to characterize the accretion and ejection processes. The luminosity of th…
We investigated r-process nucleosynthesis in magneto-rotational supernovae, based on a new explosion mechanism induced by the magneto-rotational instability. A series of axisymmetric magneto-hydrodynamical simulations with detailed microphysics including neutrino heating is performed, numerically resolving the magneto-rotational instability. Neutrino-heating dominated explosions, enhanced by magnetic fields, showed mildly neutron-rich ejecta producing nuclei up to $A \sim 130$ (i.e. the weak r-process), while explosion models with stronger magnetic fields reproduce a solar-like r-process patte…
Non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes -- namely Ohmic resistivity, ambipolar diffusion and the Hall effect -- modify the early stages of the star formation process and the surrounding environment. Collectively, they have been shown to promote disc formation and promote or hinder outflows. But which non-ideal process has the greatest impact? Using three-dimensional smoothed particle radiation non-ideal MHD simulations, we model the gravitational collapse of a rotating, magnetised cloud through the first hydrostatic core phase to shortly after the formation of the stellar core. We invest…
We carried out axisymmetric simulations of disk accretion to a rapidly rotating magnetized star in the "propeller" regime. Simulations show that propellers may be "weak" (with no outflows), and "strong" (with outflows). Investigation of the difference between these two regimes have shown that outflows appear only in the case where the "friction" between the disk and magnetosphere is sufficiently large, and when accreting matter flux is not very small. Matter outflows in a wide cone and is magneto-centrifugally ejected from the inner regions of the disk. Closer to the axis there is a strong, co…
We present the results of axisymmetric simulations of MRI-driven accretion onto a rapidly rotating, magnetized star accreting in the propeller regime. The stellar magnetosphere corotates with the star, forming a centrifugal barrier at the disc-magnetosphere boundary which inhibits matter accretion onto the star. Instead, the disc matter accumulates at the disc-magnetosphere interface and slowly diffuses into the inner magnetosphere where it picks up angular momentum and is quickly ejected from the system as an outflow. Due to the interaction of the matter with the magnetosphere, this wind is d…
The atmospheric structure of T Tauri Stars (TTSs) and its connection with the large scale outflow is poorly known. Neither the effect of the magnetically mediated inter- action between the star and the disc in the stellar atmosphere is well understood. The Mg II multiplet is a fundamental tracer of TTSs atmospheres and outflows, and is the strongest feature in the near-ultraviolet spectrum of TTSs. The International Ultraviolet Explorer and Hubble Space Telescope data archives provide a unique set to study the main physical compounds contributing to the line profile and to derive the propertie…
We present results from new self-consistent 3D MHD simulations of the magnetospheres from massive stars with a dipole magnetic axis that has a non-zero obliquity angle ($β$) to the star's rotation axis. As an initial direct application, we compare the global structure of co-rotating disks for nearly aligned ($β=5^o$) versus half-oblique ($β=45^o$) models, both with moderately rapid rotation ($\sim$ 0.5 critical). We find that accumulation surfaces broadly resemble the forms predicted by the analytic Rigidly Rotating Magnetosphere (RRM) model, but the mass buildup to near the critical level for…
We present calculations for a magnetised hybrid wind model for Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. The model incorporates a canonical Weber-Davis (WD) stellar wind with dust grains in the envelope of an AGB star. The resulting hybrid picture preserves traits of both types of winds. It is seen that this combination requires that the dust-parameter ($Γ_{d}$) be less than unity in order to achieve an outflow. The emergence of critical points in the wind changes the nature of the dust-driven outflow, simultaneously, the presence of a dust condensation radius changes the morphology of the magnetoh…
Magnetorotational turbulence and magnetically driven disc winds are often considered as separate processes. However, realistic astrophysical discs are expected to be subject to both effects, although possibly at different times and locations. We investigate here the potential link between these two phenomena using a mixed numerical and analytical approach. We show in particular that large-scale MRI modes which dominate strongly magnetised discs (plasma beta~10) naturally produce magnetically driven outflows in the nonlinear regime. We show that these outflows share many similarities with local…
Observations of jets from young stellar objects reveal the asymmetric outflows from some sources. A large set of $2.5$D MHD simulations has been carried out for axisymmetric viscous/diffusive disc accretion to rotating magnetized stars for the purpose of assessing the conditions where the outflows or jets are asymmetric relative to the equatorial plane. We consider initial magnetic fields that are symmetric about the equatorial plane and consist of a radially distributed field threading the disc (disc-field) and a stellar dipole field.({\bf 1}). For pure disc-fields the symmetry or asymmetry o…
Given a known radial magnetic field distribution on the Sun's photospheric surface, there exist well-established methods for computing a potential magnetic field in the corona above. Such potential fields are routinely used as input to solar wind models, and to initialize magneto-frictional or full magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the coronal and heliospheric magnetic fields. We describe an improved magnetic field model which calculates a magneto-frictional equilibrium with an imposed solar wind profile (which can be Parker's solar wind solution, or any reasonable equivalent). These `outflow…
Turbulence is the dominant source of collisional velocities for grains with a wide range of sizes in protoplanetary disks. So far, only Kolmogorov turbulence has been considered for calculating grain collisional velocities, despite the evidence that turbulence in protoplanetary disks may be non-Kolmogorov. In this work, we present calculations of grain collisional velocities for arbitrary turbulence models characterized by power-law spectra and determined by three dimensionless parameters: the slope of the kinetic energy spectrum, the slope of the auto-correlation time, and the Reynolds number…
We investigate numerically the Princeton magneto-rotational instability (MRI) experiment and the effect of conducting axial boundaries or endcaps. MRI is identified and found to reach a much higher saturation than for insulating endcaps. This is probably due to stronger driving of the base flow by the magnetically rather than viscously coupled boundaries. Although the computations are necessarily limited to lower Reynolds numbers ($\Re$) than their experimental counterparts, it appears that the saturation level becomes independent of $\Re$ when $\Re$ is sufficiently large, whereas it has been …

In solar wind, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) discontinuities are ubiquitous and often found to be at the origin of turbulence intermittency. They may also play a key role in the turbulence dissipation and heating of the solar wind. The tangential (TD) and rotational (RD) discontinuities are the two most important types of discontinuities. Recently, the connection between turbulence intermittency and proton thermodynamics has been being investigated observationally. Here we present numerical results from three-dimensional MHD simulation with pressure anisotropy and define new methods to identify an…
Bearing in mind the application to core-collapse supernovae, we study nonlinear properties of the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) by means of three- dimensional simulations in the framework of a local shearing box approximation. By changing systematically the shear rates that symbolize the degree of differential rotation in nascent proto-neutron stars (PNSs), we derive a scaling relation between the turbulent stress sustained by the MRI and the shear- vorticity ratio. Our parametric survey shows a power-law scaling between the turbulent stress ($<< w_{\rm tot}>>$) and the shear- vorticity…
Modeling YSO Jets in 3D I: Highly Variable Asymmetric Magnetic Pressure-Driven Jets in the Polar Cavity from Toroidal Fields Generated by Inner Disk Accretion
We carry out magnetohydrodynamical simulations with FLASH of the formation of a single, a tight binary ($a\sim$2.5 AU) and a wide binary star ($a\sim$45 AU). We study the outflows and jets from these systems to understand the contributions the circumstellar and circumbinary discs have on the efficiency and morphology of the outflow. In the single star and tight binary case we obtain a single pair of jets launched from the system, while in the wide binary case two pairs of jets are observed. This implies that in the tight binary case the contribution of the circumbinary disc on the outflow is g…
The formation of stars is usually accompanied by the launching of protostellar outflows. Observations with the Atacama Large Millimetre/sub-millimetre Array (ALMA) will soon revolutionalise our understanding of the morphologies and kinematics of these objects. In this paper, we present synthetic ALMA observations of protostellar outflows based on numerical magnetohydrodynamic collapse simulations. We find significant velocity gradients in our outflow models and a very prominent helical structure within the outflows. We speculate that the disk wind found in the ALMA Science Verification Data of…
Both stars and planets can lose mass through an expansive wind outflow, often constrained or channeled by magnetic fields that form a surrounding magnetosphere. The very strong winds of massive stars are understood to be driven by line-scattering of the star's radiative momentum, while in the Sun and even lower-mass stars a much weaker mass loss arises from the thermal expansion of a mechanically heated corona. In exoplanets around such low-mass stars, the radiative heating and wind interaction can lead to thermal expansion or mechanical ablation of their atmospheres. Stellar magnetospheres re…
Aims: I report results in numerical simulations of star-disk magnetospheric interaction. A thin accretion disk with corona above a rotating stellar surface is simulated in a parameter study, to find trends in the angular momentum flux. The results are presented in the case of Young Stellar Objects, but they can be rescaled to other objects with similar geometry. Methods: In the performed resistive and viscous magneto-hydrodynamic simulations, a quasi-stationary state is reached in the cases with different parameters. Angular momentum fluxes in the different components of the flow are computed,…
While magnetic fields have long been considered to be important for the evolution of magnetic non-degenerate stars and compact stars, it has become clear in recent years that actually all of the stars are deeply affected. This is particularly true regarding their internal angular momentum distribution, but magnetic fields may also influence internal mixing processes and even the fate of the star. We propose a new framework for stellar evolution simulations, in which the interplay between magnetic field, rotation, mass loss, and changes in the stellar density and temperature distributions are t…
A heavy hadron traversing Quark-Gluon Plasma and dragged along in rotational motion is subject to the Lorentz and centrifugal forces. The Lorentz force, sourced by the valence quarks of heavy-ions, possesses the electric and magnetic components in the hadron comoving frame. The electric component renders the hadron unstable by empowering one of its quarks to tunnel through the potential barrier. Assuming that the magnetic field is parallel to the plasma vorticity, the hadron dissociation probability is computed using the Imaginary Time Method and is found to strongly depend on the sign of the …
