We first show that the master equations for massless perturbations of accelerating rotating black holes can be transformed into the Heun's equation. The quasinormal modes of the black holes can be easily calculated in the framework of the Heun's equation. We identify three modes for the tensor perturbations: the photon sphere modes, which reduce to the quasinormal modes of Kerr black holes when the acceleration parameter vanishes; the near-extremal modes, which branch from the first set and become dominant when the spin is near extremal; and the acceleration modes, which are closely related to the acceleration horizon. We calculate the frequency spectrum of the QNMs in various spin and acceleration parameters. We choose an angular boundary condition that keeps the angular function regular at $ θ= 0 $ and $π$, which is consistent with the boundary condition of the Kerr black hole. The conical singularity caused by the acceleration influences this boundary condition. We find that the $m_0 = 1$ modes have an anomalous behavior at particular accelerations.
We investigate the numerical stability of accelerated AdS black holes against linear scalar perturbations. In particular, we study the evolution of a probe non-minimally coupled scalar field on Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström AdS black holes with small accelerations by computing the quasinormal modes of the perturbation spectrum. We decompose the scalar field Klein-Gordon equation and study the eigenvalue problem for its angular and radial-temporal parts using different numerical methods. The angular part is written in terms of the Heun solution and expanded through the Frobenius method w…
We argue that the analysis of transients, of decoherence effects, or of any breaking of the exact boost invariance of the Ernst metric shows that uniformly accelerated black holes do emit an energy flux given by the Doppler-shifted Hawking radiation, in perfect {\it agreement} to what happens for accelerated particles.
We show that a system is uniformly accelerated if and only if all of the clocks in the system can be synchronized to each other, and the clocks will remain synchronized as long as the acceleration remains uniform. In particular, it is possible to synchronize clocks on a disk rotating with constant angular velocity. Conventional thinking holds that this is impossible because a time gap invariably arises.
We address the old question of whether or not a uniformly accelerated charged particle radiates, and consequently, if weak equivalence principle is violated by electrodynamics. We show that radiation has different meanings; some absolute, some relative. Detecting photons or electromagnetic waves is NOT absolute, it depends both on the electromagnetic field and on the state of motion of the antenna. An antenna used by a Rindler observer does not detect any radiation from a uniformly accelerated co-moving charged particle. Therefore, a Rindler observer cannot decide whether or not he is in an ac…
A recent paper of Singal [Gen. Rel. Grav. 27 (1995), 953-967] argues that a uniformly accelerated particle does not radiate, in contradiction to the consensus of the research literature over the past 30 years. This note points out some questionable aspects of Singal's argument and shows how similar calculations can lead to the opposite conclusion.
We consider a point charge fixed in the Rindler coordinates which describe a uniformly accelerated frame. We determine an integral expression of the induced charge density due to the vacuum polarization at the first order in the fine structure constant. In the case where the acceleration is weak, we give explicitly the induced electrostatic potential.
A new kind of uniformly accelerated reference frames with a line-element different from the Møller and Rindler ones is presented, in which every observer at $x, y, z=$consts. has the same constant acceleration. The laws of mechanics are checked in the new kind of frames. Its thermal property is studied. The comparison with the Møller and Rindler uniform accelerated reference frames is also made.
We construct an alternative uniformly accelerated reference frame based on the 3+1 formalism in adapted coordinates. In this frame, time-dependent redshift drift exists between co-moving observers, which differs from that in Rindler coordinates. This phenomenon can be tested in laboratory and improve our understanding of non-inertial frames.
We study quantum radiation generated by an accelerated motion of a small body with a refractive index n which differes slightly from 1. To simplify calculations we consider a model with a scalar massless field. We use the perturbation expansion in a small parameter n-1 to obtain a correction to the vacuum Hadamard function for a uniformly accelerated motion of the body. We obtain the vacuum expectation for the energy density flux in the wave zone and discuss its properties.
We revisit the long standing problem of analyzing an inertial electric charge from the point of view of uniformly accelerated observers in the context of semi-classical gravity. We choose a suitable set of accelerated observers with respect to which there is no photon emission coming from the inertial charge. We discuss this result against previous claims [F. Rohrlich, Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) vol: 22, 169 (1963)]. (This Essay was awarded a Honorable Mention for 1994 by the Gravity Research Foundation.)
Electromagnetic field produced by magnetic multipoles in hyperbolic motion is derived and compared with electromagnetic field produced by electric multipoles in hyperbolic motion. The resulting fields are related by duality symmetry. Radiative properties of these solutions are demonstrated. In the second part an analogous, uniformly accelerated source of gravitational radiation is studied, within exact Einstein's theory. Radiative characteristics of the corresponding solution as flux of the radiation and the total mass-energy of the system are calculated and graphically illustrated.
The completeness of the quasinormal modes of the wave equation with Poeschl-Teller potential is investigated. A main result is that after a large enough time $t_0$, the solutions of this equation corresponding to $C^{\infty}$-data with compact support can be expanded uniformly in time with respect to the quasinormal modes, thereby leading to absolutely convergent series. Explicit estimates for $t_0$ depending on both the support of the data and the point of observation are given. For the particular case of an ``early'' time and zero distance between the support of the data and observational po…
We present an exact treatment of the influences on a quantum scalar field in its Minkowski vacuum state induced by coupling of the field to a uniformly accelerated harmonic oscillator. We show that there are no radiation from the oscillator in the point of view of a uniformly accelerating observer. On the other hand, there are radiations in the point of view of an inertial observer. It is shown that Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) like correlations of Rindler particles in Minkowski vacuum states are modified by a phase factor in front of the momentum-symmetric Rindler operators. The exact quanti…
We aim to study the thermodynamic properties of the spherically symmetric reference frames with uniform acceleration, including the spherically symmetric generalization of Rindler reference frame and the new kind of uniformly accelerated reference frame. We find that, unlike the general studies about the horizon thermodynamics, one cannot obtain the laws of thermodynamics for their horizons in the usual approaches, despite that one can formally define an area entropy (Bekenstein-Hawking entropy). In fact, the common horizon for a set of uniformly accelerated observers is not always exist, even…
We study quantum radiation generated by a uniformly accelerated motion of small spherical mirrors. To obtain Green's function for a scalar massless field we use Wick's rotation. In the Euclidean domain the problem is reduced to finding an electric potential in 4D flat space in the presence of a metallic toroidal boundary. The latter problem is solved by a separation of variables. After performing an inverse Wick's rotation we obtain the Hadamard function in the wave-zone regime and use it to calculate the vacuum fluctuations and the vacuum expectation for the energy density flux in the wave zo…
The emission of radiation by a uniformly accelerated charge is analyzed. According to the standard approach, a radiation is observed whenever there is a relative acceleraion between the charge and the observer. Analyzing difficulties that arose in the standard approach, we propose that a radaition is created whenever a relative acceleration between the charge and its own electric field exists. The electric field induced by a charge accelerated by an external (nongravitational) force, is not accelerated with the charge. Hence the electric field is curved in the instantanous rest frame of the ac…
We obtained an exact solution for a uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detector interacting with a massless scalar field in (3+1) dimensions which enables us to study the entire evolution of the total system, from the initial transient to late-time steady state. We find that the Unruh effect as derived from time-dependent perturbation theory is valid only in the transient stage and is totally invalid for cases with proper acceleration smaller than the damping constant. We also found that, unlike in (1+1)D results, the (3+1)D uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detector in a steady state does em…
Using traversable wormholes as theoretical background, we revisit a deep question of general relativity: Does a uniformly accelerated charged particle radiate? We particularize to the recently proposed gravitational Čerenkov radiation, that happens when the spatial part of the Ricci tensor is negative. If $^{^{(3+1)}}R^i_{\phantom{i}i}< 0$, the matter threading the gravitational field violates the weak energy condition. In this case, the effective refractive index for light is bigger than 1, i.e. particles propagates, in that medium, faster than photons. This leads to a violation of the equiva…
We canonically quantize the Proca field in the Rindler wedge and compute the total response rate of a uniformly accelerated current interacting with massive vector Rindler particles from the Unruh thermal bath. We explicitly verify that the result obtained is exactly the same as the emission rate of massive vector particles in the Minkowski vacuum as analyzed by inertial observers. Eventually our results are interpreted in terms of the interaction of static electrons coupled to $Z^0$ bosons present in Hawking radiation close to the event horizon of a black hole.
This paper provides an analytical treatment of accelerated and geodesic motion within the framework of the Friedmann -Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime. By employing conformal time transformations we manage to convert second order differential equations of motion in FLRW spacetime to first order equations in the conformally transformed spacetime. This allows us to derive a general analytical solution in closed-form for accelerated motion in spatially curved FLRW spacetime. We provide few examples of this general solution for the spatially flat cases. The last part of our work focuses …
The scalar and electromagnetic fields of charges uniformly accelerated in de Sitter spacetime are constructed. They represent the generalization of the Born solutions describing fields of two particles with hyperbolic motion in flat spacetime. In the limit Lambda -> 0, the Born solutions are retrieved. Since in the de Sitter universe the infinities I^+- are spacelike, the radiative properties of the fields depend on the way in which a given point of I^+- is approached. The fields must involve both retarded and advanced effects: Purely retarded fields do not satisfy the constraints at the past …
We use Generalized Fermi-Walker transport to construct a one-parameter family of inertial frames which are instantaneously comoving to a uniformly accelerated observer. We explain the connection between our approach and that of Mashhoon. We show that our solutions of uniformly accelerated motion have constant acceleration in the comoving frame. Assuming the Weak Hypothesis of Locality, we obtain local spacetime transformations from a uniformly accelerated frame $K'$ to an inertial frame $K$. The spacetime transformations between two uniformly accelerated frames with the same acceleration are L…
We adopt Leaver's method to determine quasi normal frequencies of the Schwarzschild black hole in higher (D >= 10) dimensions. In D-dimensional Schwarzschild metric, when D increases, more and more singularities, spaced uniformly on the unit circle |r|=1, approach the horizon at r = r_h = 1. Thus, a solution satisfying the outgoing wave boundary condition at the horizon must be continued to some mid point and only then the continued fraction condition can be applied. This prescription is general and applies to all cases for which, due to regular singularities on the way from the point of inter…
We study the correlations between the particles emitted by a moving mirror. To this end, we first analyze $< T_{μν}(x) T_{αβ}(x') >$, the two-point function of the stress tensor of the radiation field. In this we generalize the work undertaken by Carlitz and Willey. To further analyze how the vacuum correlations on $I^-$ are scattered by the mirror and redistributed among the produced pairs of particles, we use a more powerful approach based on the value of $T_{μν}$ which is conditional to the detection of a given particle on $I^+$. We apply both methods to the fluxes emitted by a uniformly ac…
The relationship between uniformly accelerated reference frames in flat spacetime and the uniform gravitational field is examined in a relativistic context. It is shown that, contrary to previous statements in the pages of this journal, equivalence does not break down in this context. No restrictions to Newtonian approximations or small enclosures are necessary.
In the present article we solve the Dirac-Pauli and Klein Gordon equations in an asymptotically uniformly accelerated frame when a constant magnetic field is present. We compute, via the Bogoliubov coefficients, the density of scalar and spin 1/2 particles created. We discuss the role played by the magnetic field and the thermal character of the spectrum.
The analysis of uniformly longitudinally extended detector is performed and it is shown that the response of such a detector does not differ from the response of the Unruh detector, but the its excitation is caused not by the thermal bath, but by interaction with the fluctuations of the quantum field by virtual quanta.
We study the response of a uniformly accelerated detector modeled by a two-level atom nonlinearly coupled to vacuum massless Rarita-Schwinger fields. We first generalize the formalism developed by Dalibard, Dupont-Roc, and Cohen-Tannoudji in the linear coupling case, and we then calculate the mean rate of change of the atomic energy of the accelerated atom. Our result shows that a uniformly accelerated atom in its ground state interacting with vacuum Rarita-Schwinger field fluctuations would spontaneously transition to an excited state and the unique feature in contrast to the case of the atom…
We show, by exploring some elementary consequences of the covariance of Maxwell's equations under general coordinate transformations, that, despite inertial observers can indeed detect electromagnetic radiation emitted from a uniformly accelerated charge, comoving observers will see only a static electric field. This simple analysis can help understanding one of the most celebrated paradoxes of last century.
We study, in the paradigm of open quantum systems, the entanglement dynamics of two uniformly accelerated atoms with the same acceleration perpendicular to the separation. The two-atom system is treated as an open system coupled with a bath of fluctuating massless scalar fields in the Minkowski vacuum, and the master equation that governs its evolution is derived. It has been found that, for accelerated atoms with a nonvanishing separation, entanglement sudden death is a general feature when the initial state is entangled, while for those in a separable initial state, entanglement sudden birth…
The Davies-Fulling model describes the scattering of a massless field by a moving mirror in 1+1 dimensions. When the mirror travels under uniform acceleration, one encounters severe problems which are due to the infinite blue shift effects associated with the horizons. On one hand, the Bogoliubov coefficients are ill-defined and the total energy emitted diverges. On the other hand, the instantaneous mean flux vanishes. To obtained well-defined expressions we introduce an alternative model based on an action principle. The usefulness of this model is to allow to switch on and off the interactio…
The kinematical quantities derived from the velocity field of a nongeodesic congruence are studied. We found the shear tensor components are finite in time but diverge at the event horizon of the spacetime located at $ρ= 0$. The surface gravity on the horizon is just the proper acceleration of the uniformly expanding distribution of observers, in spherical Rindler coordinates. The Raychaudhuri equation is fulfilled for the congruence of particles worldlines.
We study the retarded field sourced by a uniformly accelerated particle in a non-local scalar field theory. While the presence of non-locality regularizes the field at the location of the source, we also show that Lorentz-invariant non-local field theories are particularly sensitive to the somewhat unphysical assumption of uniform acceleration, leading to logarithmic divergences on the acceleration horizon. Analytic properties of the non-local retarded Green function indicate that the divergences can be removed by placing appropriate sources on the acceleration horizon in the asymptotic past.
Radiation from a mirror moving in vacuum electromagnetic fields is shown to vanish in the case of a uniformly accelerated motion. Such motions are related to conformal coordinate transformations, which preserve correlation functions characteristic of vacuum fluctuations. As a result, vacuum fluctuations remain invariant under reflection upon a uniformly accelerated mirror, which therefore does not radiate and experiences no radiation reaction force. Mechanical effects of vacuum fluctuations thus exhibit an invariance with respect to uniformly accelerated motions.
In this work we study the chiral phase transition as observed by an accelerating observer taking into account the Unruh effect. We use Chiral Perturbation Theory at leading order and the large $N$ limit ($N$ being the number of pions) as an effective description of low-energy QCD, and the Thermalization Theorem to compute the relevant partition function for the accelerating observer. As a result, we obtain that chiral symmetry is restored for uniformly accelerated observers with acceleration $a$ larger than the critical value $a_c=4πf_π$, with $f_π$ being the pion decay constant.
We revisit the recently found equivalence for the response of a static scalar source interacting with a {\em massless} Klein-Gordon field when the source is (i) static in Schwarzschild spacetime, in the Unruh vacuum associated with the Hawking radiation and (ii) uniformly accelerated in Minkowski spacetime, in the inertial vacuum, provided that the source's proper acceleration is the same in both cases. It is shown that this equivalence is broken when the massless Klein-Gordon field is replaced by a {\em massive} one.
We investigate the quantum radiation emitted by a uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detector in de Sitter spacetime. We find that there exists a non-vanishing quantum radiation at late times in the radiation zone of the conformally flat coordinates, which cover the region behind the cosmological horizon for the accelerated detector. The theoretical structure of producing the late-time quantum radiation is similar to that of the same model in Minkowski spacetime: it comes from a nonlocal correlation of the quantum field in the Bunch-Davies vacuum state, which can be traced back to the entangle…
We discuss the Newtonian limit of boost-rotation symmetric spacetimes by means of the Ehler's frame theory. Conditions for the existence of such a limit are given and, in particular, we show that asymptotic flatness is an essential requirement for the existence of such a limit. Consequently, generalized boost-rotation symmetric spacetimes describing particles moving in uniform fields will not possess a Newtonian limit. In the cases where the boost-rotation symmetric spacetime is asymptotically flat and its Newtonian limit exists, then it is non-zero only for the instant of time symmetry and it…
In this work, we give a description of the process of teleportation between Alice in an inertial frame, and Rob who is in uniform acceleration with respect to Alice. The fidelity of the teleportation is reduced due to Unruh radiation in Rob's frame. In so far as teleportation is a measure of entanglement, our results suggest that quantum entanglement is degraded in non inertial frames.
A classical (non-quantum-mechanical) relativistic ideal gas in thermodynamic equilibrium in a uniformly accelerated frame of reference is studied using Gibbs's microcanonical and grand canonical formulations of statistical mechanics. Using these methods explicit expressions for the particle, energy and entropy density distributions are obtained, which are found to be in agreement with the well known results of the relativistic formulation of Boltzmann's kinetic theory. Explicit expressions for the total entropy, total energy and rest mass of the gas are obtained. The position of the center of …
This paper deals thoroughly with the scalar and electromagnetic fields of uniformly accelerated charges in de Sitter spacetime. It gives details and makes various extensions of our Physical Review Letter from 2002. The basic properties of the classical Born solutions representing two uniformly accelerated charges in flat spacetime are first summarized. The worldlines of uniformly accelerated particles in de Sitter universe are defined and described in a number of coordinate frames, some of them being of cosmological significance, the other are tied naturally to the particles. The scalar and el…
We consider quantum fields around uniformly accelerated black holes. At a particular value of the acceleration, the Bogolubov transformation which would be responsible for the late-time Hawking radiation, is found to be trivial. When this happens, Hawking's thermal radiation, Doppler-shifted or not, is absent to the asymptotic inertial observers despite the nonzero Hawking temperature, while the co-moving observers find the black hole radiance exactly balanced by the acceleration heat bath. After a brief comparison to the classical system of a uniformly accelerated charge, we close with two im…
In this article we have investigated the possibility of Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) in a frame undergoing uniform acceleration or in other wards, in Rindler space associated with the uniformly accelerated frame. We have followed a very simple conventional technique generally used in text book level studies. It has been observed that the critical temperature for BEC increases with the increase in magnitude of acceleration of the frame. Typically the critical temperature in an accelerated frame is of the order of the Unruh temperature. Hence we have concluded that the increase in the magnit…
In Minkowski space, an accelerated reference frame may be defined as one that is related to an inertial frame by a sequence of instantaneous Lorentz transformations. Such an accelerated observer sees a causal horizon, and the quantum vacuum of the inertial observer appears thermal to the accelerated observer, also known as the Unruh effect. We argue that an accelerating frame may be similarly defined (i.e. as a sequence of instantaneous Lorentz transformations) in noncommutative Moyal spacetime, and discuss the twisted quantum field theory appropriate for such an accelerated observer. Our anal…
Solutions of vacuum Einstein's field equations describing uniformly accelerated particles or black holes belong to the class of boost-rotation symmetric spacetimes. They are the only explicit solutions known which represent moving finite objects. Their Newtonian limit is analyzed using the Ehlers frame theory. Generic spacetimes with axial and boost symmetries are first studied from the Newtonian perspective. The results are then illustrated by specific examples such as C-metric, Bonnor-Swaminarayan solutions, self-accelerating "dipole particles", and generalized boost-rotation symmetric solut…
Recently, Hawking, Perry and Strominger described a physical process that implants supertranslational hair on a Schwarzschild black hole by an infalling matter shock wave without spherical symmetry. Using the BMS-type symmetries of the Rindler horizon, we present an analogous process that implants supertranslational hair on a Rindler horizon by a matter shock wave without planar symmetry, and we investigate the corresponding memory effect on the Rindler family of uniformly linearly accelerated observers. We assume each observer to remain linearly uniformly accelerated through the wave, in the …
We argue that purely local experiments can distinguish a stationary charged particle in a static gravitational field from an accelerated particle in (gravity-free) Minkowski space. Some common arguments to the contrary are analyzed and found to rest on a misidentification of ``energy''.
We consider the quantum correlations, i.e. the entanglement, between two systems uniformly accelerated with identical acceleration a in opposite Rindler quadrants which have reached thermal equilibrium with the Unruh heat bath. To this end we study an exactly soluble model consisting of two oscillators coupled to a massless scalar field in 1+1 dimensions. We find that for some values of the parameters the oscillators get entangled shortly after the moment of closest approach. Because of boost invariance there are an infinite set of pairs of positions where the oscillators are entangled. The ma…
In this work we discuss the process of measurements by a detector in an uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion, interacting linearly with a massive scalar field. The detector model for field quanta is a point-like system with a ground state and a continuum of unbounded states. We employ the Glauber theory of photodetection. In an uniformly accelerated reference frame, the detector, interacting with the field prepared in an arbitrary state of the Rindler Fock space, is excited only by absorption processes. For the uniformly accelerated detector prepared in the ground state, we evaluate the tr…
We study the time-dependence of quantum entanglement between two Unruh-DeWitt detectors, one at rest in a Minkowski frame, the other non-uniformly accelerated in some specified way. The two detectors each couple to a scalar quantum field but do not interact directly. The primary challenge in problems involving non-uniformly accelerated detectors arises from the fact that an event horizon is absent and the Unruh temperature is ill-defined. By numerical calculation we demonstrate that the correlators of the accelerated detector in the weak coupling limit behaves like those of an oscillator in a …
We treat an Unruh-DeWitt detector as an open quantum system and evaluate the response of a uniformly accelerated detector: (i) interacting locally with the derivatives of a massless scalar field and (ii) linearly coupled to an electromagnetic field. We find that the early-time transition rate of the detector strongly depends on the type of the interaction between the detector and the quantum field, and may not follow a Planck distribution. In contrast, the late time asymptotic state is always thermal at the Unruh temperature and thus provides a more fundamental and persistent characterization …
