The kinematical quantities derived from the velocity field of a nongeodesic congruence are studied. We found the shear tensor components are finite in time but diverge at the event horizon of the spacetime located at $ρ= 0$. The surface gravity on the horizon is just the proper acceleration of the uniformly expanding distribution of observers, in spherical Rindler coordinates. The Raychaudhuri equation is fulfilled for the congruence of particles worldlines.
The nonlocal theory of accelerated systems is extended to the propagation of Dirac particles. The implications of nonlocality for the phenomenon of spin-rotation coupling are discussed. The Lorentz-invariant nonlocal Dirac equation is presented for certain special classes of accelerated observers.
In Minkowski space, an accelerated reference frame may be defined as one that is related to an inertial frame by a sequence of instantaneous Lorentz transformations. Such an accelerated observer sees a causal horizon, and the quantum vacuum of the inertial observer appears thermal to the accelerated observer, also known as the Unruh effect. We argue that an accelerating frame may be similarly defined (i.e. as a sequence of instantaneous Lorentz transformations) in noncommutative Moyal spacetime, and discuss the twisted quantum field theory appropriate for such an accelerated observer. Our anal…
We study the propagation of light in the Born-Infeld (BI) background as seen by an accelerated observer. In a Born-Infeld electromagnetic field, light trajectories are governed by the null geodesics of the effective optical metric. The accelerated observer is in a Rindler frame, a situation that, according to the Einstein Equivalence Principle, is equivalent to being in a uniform gravitational field. The phase velocity of light propagating through a purely magnetic or electric BI background is determined as measured by the Rindler observer. The BI field and the acceleration of the frame have o…
In special relativity, the definition of coordinate systems adapted to generic accelerated observers is a long-standing problem, which has found unequivocal solutions only for the simplest motions. We show that the Marzke-Wheeler construction, an extension of the Einstein synchronization convention, produces accelerated systems of coordinates with desirable properties: (a) they reduce to Lorentz coordinates in a neighborhood of the observers' world-lines; (b) they index continuously and completely the causal envelope of the world-line (that is, the intersection of its causal past and its causa…
Physicists have been interested in accelerated observers for quite some time. Since the advent of special relativity, many authors have tried to understand these observers in the framework of Minkowski spacetime. One of the most important issues related to these observers is the problematic definition of rigid motion. In this paper, I write the metric in terms of the Frenet-Serret curvatures and the proper coordinate system of a general accelerated observer. Then, I use this approach to create a systematic way to construct a rigid motion in Minkowski spacetime. Finally, I exemplify the benefit…
If the current acceleration of our Universe is due to a cosmological constant, then a Coleman-De Luccia bubble will nucleate in our Universe. In this work, we consider that our observations could be likely in this framework, consisting in two infinite spaces, if a foliation by constant mean curvature hypersurfaces is taken to count the events in the spacetime. Thus, we obtain and study a particular foliation, which covers the existence of most observers in our part of spacetime.
Recently, Hawking, Perry and Strominger described a physical process that implants supertranslational hair on a Schwarzschild black hole by an infalling matter shock wave without spherical symmetry. Using the BMS-type symmetries of the Rindler horizon, we present an analogous process that implants supertranslational hair on a Rindler horizon by a matter shock wave without planar symmetry, and we investigate the corresponding memory effect on the Rindler family of uniformly linearly accelerated observers. We assume each observer to remain linearly uniformly accelerated through the wave, in the …
Assuming that an accelerated observer with four-velocity ${\bf u}_{\rm R}$ in a curved spacetime attributes the standard Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and Unruh temperature to his "local Rindler horizon", we show that the $\rm \it change$ in horizon area under parametric displacements of the horizon has a very specific thermodynamic structure. Specifically, it entails information about the time-time component of the Einstein tensor: $\bf G({\bf u}_{\rm R}, {\bf u}_{\rm R})$. Demanding that the result holds for all accelerated observers, this actually becomes a statement about the full Einstein te…
According to the locality postulate of special relativity, the measurements of physical fields by accelerated observers at a given event in Minkowski spacetime are related to each other by the representations of the Lorentz group. Nonlocal extensions of these representations are necessary, however, once acceleration-induced nonlocality is taken into account. The particular case of Dirac spinors is treated in detail and the corresponding nonlocal transformation group is studied.
In the present article we solve the Dirac-Pauli and Klein Gordon equations in an asymptotically uniformly accelerated frame when a constant magnetic field is present. We compute, via the Bogoliubov coefficients, the density of scalar and spin 1/2 particles created. We discuss the role played by the magnetic field and the thermal character of the spectrum.
We study the behavior of quark and diquark condensates at finite Unruh temperature as seen by an accelerated observer. The gap equations for these condensates have been obtained with consideration of a finite chemical potential. Critical values of the acceleration for the restoration of chiral and color symmetries have been estimated.
We study the response of a uniformly accelerated detector modeled by a two-level atom nonlinearly coupled to vacuum massless Rarita-Schwinger fields. We first generalize the formalism developed by Dalibard, Dupont-Roc, and Cohen-Tannoudji in the linear coupling case, and we then calculate the mean rate of change of the atomic energy of the accelerated atom. Our result shows that a uniformly accelerated atom in its ground state interacting with vacuum Rarita-Schwinger field fluctuations would spontaneously transition to an excited state and the unique feature in contrast to the case of the atom…
Based on the Hawking-Unruh thermalization theorem, we investigate the phenomenon of the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and its restoration for a uniformly accelerated observer. We employ the Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model in Rindler coordinates, and calculate the effective potential and the gap equation. The critical coupling and the critical acceleration for symmetry restoration are obtained.
With a special choice of gauge the operator of the Klein-Fock-Gordon equation in homogeneous electric field respects boost symmetry. Using this symmetry we obtain solutions for the scalar massive field equation in such a background (boost modes in the electric field). We calculate the spectrum of particles created by the electric field, as seen by an accelerated observer at spatial infinity of the right wedge of Minkowski spacetime. It is shown that the spectrum and the total number of created pairs measured by a remote uniformly accelerated observer in Minkowski spacetime are precisely the sa…
The measurement of an electromagnetic radiation field by a linearly accelerated observer is discussed. The nonlocality of this process is emphasized. The nonlocal theory of accelerated observers is briefly described and the consequences of this theory are illustrated using a concrete example involving the measurement of an incident pulse of radiation by an observer that experiences uniform acceleration during a limited interval of time.
We study the retarded field sourced by a uniformly accelerated particle in a non-local scalar field theory. While the presence of non-locality regularizes the field at the location of the source, we also show that Lorentz-invariant non-local field theories are particularly sensitive to the somewhat unphysical assumption of uniform acceleration, leading to logarithmic divergences on the acceleration horizon. Analytic properties of the non-local retarded Green function indicate that the divergences can be removed by placing appropriate sources on the acceleration horizon in the asymptotic past.
We present a theory of accelerated observers in the formalism of holographic space time, and show how to define the analog of the Unruh effect for a one parameter set of accelerated observers in a causal diamond in Minkowski space. The key fact is that the formalism splits the degrees of freedom in a large causal diamond into particles and excitations on the horizon. The latter form a large heat bath for the particles, and different Hamiltonians, describing a one parameter family of accelerated trajectories, have different couplings to the bath. We argue that for a large but finite causal diam…
After a review of the existing theory of non-inertial frames and mathematical observers in Minkowski space-time we give the explicit expression of a family of such frames obtained from the inertial ones by means of point-dependent Lorentz transformations as suggested by the locality principle. These non-inertial frames have non-Euclidean 3-spaces and contain the differentially rotating ones in Euclidean 3-spaces as a subcase. Then we discuss how to replace mathematical accelerated observers with dynamical ones (their world-lines belong to interacting particles in an isolated system) and of how…
We revisit the recently found equivalence for the response of a static scalar source interacting with a {\em massless} Klein-Gordon field when the source is (i) static in Schwarzschild spacetime, in the Unruh vacuum associated with the Hawking radiation and (ii) uniformly accelerated in Minkowski spacetime, in the inertial vacuum, provided that the source's proper acceleration is the same in both cases. It is shown that this equivalence is broken when the massless Klein-Gordon field is replaced by a {\em massive} one.
We investigate the quantum radiation emitted by a uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detector in de Sitter spacetime. We find that there exists a non-vanishing quantum radiation at late times in the radiation zone of the conformally flat coordinates, which cover the region behind the cosmological horizon for the accelerated detector. The theoretical structure of producing the late-time quantum radiation is similar to that of the same model in Minkowski spacetime: it comes from a nonlocal correlation of the quantum field in the Bunch-Davies vacuum state, which can be traced back to the entangle…
We analyze the response of a detector with a uniform acceleration $α$ in $κ-$Minkowski spacetime using the first order perturbation theory. The monopole detector is coupled to a massless complex scalar field in such a way that it is sensitive to the Lorentz violation due to the noncommutativity of spacetime present in the $κ-$deformation. The response function deviates from the thermal distribution of Unruh temperature at the order of $1/κ$ and vanishes exponentially as the proper time of the detector exceeds a certain critical time, a logarithmic function of $κ$. This suggests that the Unruh …
In this paper we re-investigate the Bogoliubov transformations which relate the Minkowski inertial vacuum to the vacuum of an accelerated observer. We implement the transformation using a non-unitary operator used in formulations of irreversible systems by Prigogine. We derive a Lyapunov function which signifies an irreversible time flow. We extend the formalism to the black hole space-time which has similar near-horizon geometry of an accelerated observer, and in addition show that thermalization is due to presence of black hole and white hole regions. Finally we discuss an attempt to general…
We investigate the quantum field aspects in flat spacetime for an uniformly accelerated observer moving in a thermal bath. In particular, we obtain an exact closed expression of the reduced density matrix for an uniformly accelerated observer with acceleration $a = 2πT$ when the state of the quantum field is a thermal bath at temperature $T^\prime$. We find that the density matrix has a simple form with an effective partition function $Z$ being a product, $Z = Z_T Z_{T^\prime}$, of two thermal partition functions corresponding to temperatures $T$ and $T^\prime$ and hence is not thermal, even w…
The sampled negative energy density seen by inertial observers, in arbitrary quantum states is limited by quantum inequalities, which take the form of an inverse relation between the magnitude and duration of the negative energy. The quantum inequalities severely limit the utilization of negative energy to produce gross macroscopic effects, such as violations of the second law of thermodynamics. The restrictions on the sampled energy density along the worldlines of accelerated observers are much weaker than for inertial observers. Here we will illustrate this with several explicit examples. We…
All existing 4-coordinate systems centered on the world-line of an accelerated observer are only locally defined like it happens for Fermi coordinates both in special and general relativity. As a consequence, it is not known how non-inertial observers can build {\it equal-time surfaces} which a) correspond to a conventional observer-dependent definition of synchronization of distant clocks; b) are good Cauchy surfaces for Maxwell equations. Another type of coordinate singularities are those connected to the relativistic rotating coordinate systems (the rotating disk). We show that the use of Ha…
We consider quantum fields around uniformly accelerated black holes. At a particular value of the acceleration, the Bogolubov transformation which would be responsible for the late-time Hawking radiation, is found to be trivial. When this happens, Hawking's thermal radiation, Doppler-shifted or not, is absent to the asymptotic inertial observers despite the nonzero Hawking temperature, while the co-moving observers find the black hole radiance exactly balanced by the acceleration heat bath. After a brief comparison to the classical system of a uniformly accelerated charge, we close with two im…
An extended monopole detector at constant acceleration coupled to a massless scalar field is allowed to evolve quantum mechanically. It is found that while in the classical, followed by the point particle, limit the usual result Unruh effect is recovered, in the point particle (before the classical) limit the detector decouples from the scalar field and therefore the effect disappears.
The particle detector model consisting of a harmonic oscillator coupled to a scalar field in $1+1$ dimensions is investigated in the inertial case. The same approach is then used in the accelerating case. The absence of radiation from a uniformly accelerated detector in a stationnary state is discussed and clarified.
We investigate the entanglement dynamics for a quantum system composed of two uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detectors in different spacetime dimensions. It is found that the range of parameters in which entanglement can be generated is expanded but the amount of generated entanglement is decreased with the increasing spacetime dimension, by calculating the evolution of two-atom states using the method for open quantum systems. We study the entanglement evolution between two accelerated atoms for different initial two-atom states, and the influence of corresponding spacetime dimensions for…
A correlation between accelerated motion and a noncompact 5th dimension is proposed. The curvature invariants and the stress energy tensor in the bulk depend only on the 5th dimension $w$ and vanish asymptotically while the proper acceleration of a static observer is proportional to $1/w$. The brane (located at $w = w_{0}$) metric is conformally flat (of AdS type) with $Λ= -3/w_{0}^{2}$ and the invariant acceleration $a = \sqrt{a^{b}a_{b}} = 1/w_{0}$. Therefore, we assume that a hyperbolic observer with the rest-system acceleration $a$ is embedded in the 5th dimension at $w_{0} = 1/a$.
We consider the quantum correlations, i.e. the entanglement, between two systems uniformly accelerated with identical acceleration a in opposite Rindler quadrants which have reached thermal equilibrium with the Unruh heat bath. To this end we study an exactly soluble model consisting of two oscillators coupled to a massless scalar field in 1+1 dimensions. We find that for some values of the parameters the oscillators get entangled shortly after the moment of closest approach. Because of boost invariance there are an infinite set of pairs of positions where the oscillators are entangled. The ma…
In this paper, we investigate how a uniformly accelerated detector responds to vacuum state of a Dirac field in the $κ$-Minkowski space-time. Starting from $κ$-deformed Dirac theory, which is invariant under $κ$-Poincare algebra, we derive $κ$-deformed Wightmann function for Dirac field, which is valid up to first order in the deformation parameter $a$. Using this, we calculate the response function of the uniformly accelerated detector, which is coupled to massless Dirac field in $κ$-spacetime. From this, we obtain the modification to Unruh effect for the $κ$-deformed Dirac field, valid up to…
In this work we discuss the process of measurements by a detector in an uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion, interacting linearly with a massive scalar field. The detector model for field quanta is a point-like system with a ground state and a continuum of unbounded states. We employ the Glauber theory of photodetection. In an uniformly accelerated reference frame, the detector, interacting with the field prepared in an arbitrary state of the Rindler Fock space, is excited only by absorption processes. For the uniformly accelerated detector prepared in the ground state, we evaluate the tr…
We study the time-dependence of quantum entanglement between two Unruh-DeWitt detectors, one at rest in a Minkowski frame, the other non-uniformly accelerated in some specified way. The two detectors each couple to a scalar quantum field but do not interact directly. The primary challenge in problems involving non-uniformly accelerated detectors arises from the fact that an event horizon is absent and the Unruh temperature is ill-defined. By numerical calculation we demonstrate that the correlators of the accelerated detector in the weak coupling limit behaves like those of an oscillator in a …
In this paper, we study the effect of $κ$-deformation of the space-time on the response function of a uniformly accelerating detector coupled to a scalar field. Starting with $κ$-deformed Klein-Gordon theory, which is invariant under a $κ$-Poincaré algebra and written in commutative space-time, we derive $κ$-deformed Wightman functions, valid up to second order in the deformation parameter $a$. Using this, we show that the first non-vanishing correction to the Unruh thermal distribution is only in the second order in $a$. We also discuss various other possible sources of $a$-dependent correcti…
Although the Unruh and Hawking phenomena are commonly linked to field quantization in "accelerated" coordinates or in curved spacetimes, we argue that they are deeply rooted at the classical level. We maintain in particular that these effects should be best understood by considering how the special-relativistic notion of "particle" gets blurred when employed in theories including accelerated observers or in general-relativistic theories, and that this blurring is an instantiation of a more general behavior arising when the principle of equivalence is used to generalize classical or quantum spe…
Two observers determine the entanglement between two free bosonic modes by each detecting one of the modes and observing the correlations between their measurements. We show that a state which is maximally entangled in an inertial frame becomes less entangled if the observers are relatively accelerated. This phenomenon, which is a consequence of the Unruh effect, shows that entanglement is an observer-dependent quantity in non-inertial frames. In the high acceleration limit, our results can be applied to a non-accelerated observer falling into a black hole while the accelerated one barely esca…
We argue that purely local experiments can distinguish a stationary charged particle in a static gravitational field from an accelerated particle in (gravity-free) Minkowski space. Some common arguments to the contrary are analyzed and found to rest on a misidentification of ``energy''.
Due to the Unruh effect, accelerated and inertial observers differ in their description of a given quantum state. The implications of this effect are explored for the entropy assigned by such observers to localized objects that may cross the associated Rindler horizon. It is shown that the assigned entropies differ radically in the limit where the number of internal states $n$ becomes large. In particular, the entropy assigned by the accelerated observer is a bounded function of $n$. General arguments are given along with explicit calculations for free fields. The implications for discussions …
Characteristics of observers in relativity theory are critically examined. For field measurements in Minkowski spacetime, the Bohr-Rosenfeld principle implies that the connection between actual (i.e., noninertial) and inertial observers must be nonlocal. Nonlocal electrodynamics of non-uniformly rotating observers is discussed and the consequences of this theory for the phenomenon of spin-rotation coupling are briefly explored.
We propose a new form for the quantum master equation in the theory of open quantum systems. This new formalism allows one to describe the dynamics of two-level systems moving along different hyperbolic trajectories with distinct proper times. In the Born-Markov approximation, we consider a quantum massless scalar field coupled with two-level systems. Starting from a separable state we show the emergence of entanglement harvesting. For different proper accelerations we verify also the entanglement sudden death.
This article investigates the Schwinger effect for fermions with background electric and magnetic fields of constant strengths from the point of view of a uniformly accelerated or the Rindler observer. The Dirac equation is solved in a closed form, and the field quantisation in the $(3+1)$-dimensional Rindler spacetime is performed. The orthonormal local in and out modes for the causally disconnected right and left wedges and the Bogoliubov relations between them are obtained. Next, the global modes are constructed to cover the whole spacetime, and the Bogoliubov relationship between the local…
Recently, the inverse $β$-decay rate calculated with respect to uniformly accelerated observers (experiencing the Unruh thermal bath) was revisited. Concerns have been raised regarding the compatibility of inertial and accelerated observers' results when neutrino mixing is taken into account. Here, we show that these concerns are unfounded by discussing the properties of the Unruh thermal bath with mixing neutrinos and explicitly calculating the decay rates according to both sets of observers and confirming that they are in agreement. The Unruh effect is perfectly valid for mixing neutrinos.
The thermal time hypothesis proposed by Rovelli [1] regards the physical basis for the flow of time as thermodynamical and provides a definition of the temperature for some special cases. We verify this hypothesis in the case of de Sitter spacetime by relating the uniformly accelerated observer in de Sitter spacetime to the diamond in Minkowski spacetime. Then, as an application of it, we investigate the thermal effect for the uniformly accelerated observer with a finite lifetime in dS spacetime, which generalizes the corresponding result for the case of Minkowski spacetime [2]. Furthermore, n…
We study the spontaneous excitation of a uniformly accelerated two-level atom non-linearly coupled with vacuum Dirac field fluctuations using the formalism proposed by Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen-Tannoudji (DDC) and generalized to the present case in the current paper. We find that a cross term involving both vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction appears, which is absent in the linear coupling cases such as an atom interacting with vacuum scalar or electromagnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, the contribution of this term actually dominates over that of radiation reaction. Thus, the mean…
We study a uniformly accelerated detector coupled to a massless scalar field for a finite time interval. By considering the detector initially prepared in a superposition state, qubit state, we find that the acceleration induces decoherence on the qubit. Our results suggest the dependence of loss of coherence on the polar angle of qubit state on a Bloch sphere and the time interaction. The adjust those parameters can significantly improve the conditions to estimate the degree of decoherence induced by Unruh radiation.
We propose a scalar background in Minkowski spacetime imparting constant proper acceleration to a classical particle. In contrast to the case of a constant electric field the proposed scalar potential does not create particle-antiparticle pairs. Therefore an elementary particle accelerated by such field is a more appropriate candidate for an "Unruh-detector" than a particle moving in a constant electric field. We show that the proposed detector does not reveal the universal thermal response of the Unruh type.
The interplay between acceleration and radiation harbors remarkable and surprising consequences. One of the most striking is that the Larmor radiation emitted by a charge can be seen as a consequence of the Unruh thermal bath. Indeed, this connection between the Unruh effect and classical bremsstrahlung was used recently to propose an experiment to confirm (as directly as possible) the existence of the Unruh thermal bath. This situation may sound puzzling in two ways: first, because the Unruh effect is a strictly quantum effect while Larmor radiation is a classical one, and second, because of …
We investigate the entanglement dynamics of two uniformly accelerated atoms with the same acceleration perpendicular to their separation. The two-atom system is treated as an open system coupled with fluctuating electromagnetic fields in the Minkowski vacuum, and in the Born-Markov approximation the master equation that describes the completely positive time evolution of the two-atom system is derived. In particular, we investigate the phenomena of entanglement degradation, generation, revival and enhancement. As opposed to the scalar-field case, the entanglement dynamics is crucially dependen…
The ongoing conjecture that the presence of horizon may induce chaos in an integrable system, is further investigated from the perspective of a uniformly accelerated frame. Particularly, we build up a model which consists of a particle (massless and chargeless) trapped in harmonic oscillator in a uniformly accelerated frame (namely Rindler observer). Here the Rindler frame provides a Killing horizon without any intrinsic curvature to the system. This makes the present observations different from previous studies. We observe that for some particular values of parameters of the system (like acce…
Positive frequency Wightman function and vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor are computed for a massive scalar field with general curvature coupling parameter and satisfying Robin boundary condition on a uniformly accelerated infinite plate. The both regions of the right Rindler wedge, (i) on the right (RR region) and (ii) on the left (RL region) of the plate are investigated. For the case (ii) the electromagnetic field is considered as well. The mode summation method is used with combination of a variant of the generalized Abel-Plana formula. This allows to present the exp…
After a review of the 1+3 point of view on non-inertial observers and of the problems of rotating reference frames, we underline that was is lacking in their treatment is a good global notion of simultaneity due to the restricted validity of the existing 4-coordinates associated to an accelerated observer (like the Fermi normal ones). We show that the relativistic Hamiltonian 3+1 point of view, based on a 3+1 splitting of Minkowski space-time with a foliation whose space-like leaves are both simultaneity and Cauchy surfaces, allows to find a solution to such problems, if we take into account M…
