Common smoothness indicators used in Weighted Essentially Non\--Os\-cil\-la\-to\-ry (WENO) reconstructions [Jiang, G.S., Shu, C.W.: Efficient implementation of {Weighted} {ENO} schemes, J.\ Comput.\ Phys. \textbf{126}, 202--228 (1996)] have quadratic cost with respect to the order. A set of novel smoothness indicators with linear cost of computation with respect to the order is presented. These smoothness indicators can be used in the context of schemes of the type introduced by Yamaleev and Carpenter [Yamaleev, N.K., Carpenter, M.H.: A systematic methodology to for constructing high-order energy stable WENO schemes. J. Comput. Phys. \textbf{228}(11), 4248-4272 (2009)]. The accuracy properties of the resulting non-linear weights are the same as those arising from using the traditional Jiang-Shu smoothness indicators in Yamaleev-Carpenter-type reconstructions. The increase of the efficiency and ease of implementation are shown.
The advantage of WENO-JS5 scheme [ J. Comput. Phys. 1996] over the WENO-LOC scheme [J. Comput. Phys.1994] is that the WENO-LOC nonlinear weights do not achieve the desired order of convergence in smooth monotone regions and at critical points. In this article, this drawback is achieved with the WENO-LOC smoothness indicators by constructing a WENO-Z type nonlinear weights which contains a novel global smoothness indicator. This novel smoothness indicator measures the derivatives of the reconstructed flux in a global stencil, as a result, the proposed numerical scheme could decrease the dissipa…
We develop new adaptive alternative weighted essentially non-oscillatory (A-WENO) schemes for hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. The new schemes employ the recently proposed local characteristic decomposition based central-upwind numerical fluxes, the three-stage third-order strong stability preserving Runge-Kutta time integrator, and the fifth-order WENO-Z interpolation. The adaptive strategy is implemented by applying the limited interpolation only in the parts of the computational domain where the solution is identified as ``rough'' with the help of a smoothness indicator. We develop …
In this article, novel smoothness indicators are presented for calculating the nonlinear weights of weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme to approximate the viscosity numerical solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. These novel smoothness indicators are constructed from the derivatives of reconstructed polynomials over each sub-stencil. The constructed smoothness indicators measure the arc-length of the reconstructed polynomials so that the new nonlinear weights could get less absolute truncation error and gives a high-resolution numerical solution. Extensive numerical tests are conduct…
As we found previously, when critical points occur within grid intervals, the accuracy relations of smoothness indicators of WENO-JS would differ from that assuming critical points occurring on grid nodes, and accordingly the global smoothness indicator in WENO-Z scheme will differ from the original one. Based on above understandings, we first discuss several issues regarding current third-order WENO-Z improvements (e.g. WENO-NP3, -F3, -NN3, -PZ3 and -P+3), i.e. the numerical results with scale dependency, the validity of analysis assuming critical points occurring on nodes, and the sensitivit…
In this paper we propose new Z-type nonlinear weights of the fifth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) finite difference scheme for hyperbolic conservation laws. Instead of employing the classical smoothness indicators for the nonlinear weights, we take the $p$th root of the smoothness indicators and follow the form of Z-type nonlinear weights, leading to fifth order accuracy in smooth regions, even at the critical points, and sharper approximations around the discontinuities. We also prove that the proposed nonlinear weights converge to the linear weights as $p \to \infty$, impl…
A novel method for constructing robust and high-order accurate weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme is proposed in this paper. The method is mainly based on the WENO-Z type scheme, in which, an eighth-order global smoothness indicator (the square of the approximation of the fourth-order derivative on the five-point stencil used by the fifth-order WENO scheme) is used, and in order to keep the ENO property and robustness, the constant 1 used to calculate the un-normalized weights is replaced by a function of local smoothness indicators of candidate sub-stencils. This function is d…
In this article we present a modification of the algorithm for data discretized in the point values introduced in [S. Amat, J. Ruiz, C.-W. Shu, On a new WENO algorithm of order 2r with improved accuracy close to discontinuities, App. Math. Lett. 105 (2020), 106-298]. In the aforementioned work, we managed to obtain an algorithm that reaches a progressive and optimal order of accuracy close to discontinuities for WENO-6. For higher orders, i.e. WENO-8, WENO-10, etc. We have found that the previous algorithm presents some shadows in the detection of discontinuities, meaning that the order of acc…
This paper develops the structure-preserving finite volume weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) hybrid schemes for the shallow water equations under the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework, dubbed as ALE-WENO schemes. The WENO hybrid reconstruction is adopted on moving meshes, which distinguishes the smooth, non-smooth, and transition stencils by a simple smoothness detector. To maintain the positivity preserving and the well-balanced properties of the ALE-WENO schemes, we adapt the positivity preserving limiter and the well-balanced approaches on static meshes to moving meshe…
The aim of this study is to develop a novel WENO scheme that improves the performance of the well-known fifth-order WENO methods. The approximation space consists of exponential polynomials with a tension parameter that may be optimized to fit the the specific feature of the data, yielding better results compared to the polynomial approximation space. However, finding an optimal tension parameter is a very important and difficult problem, indeed a topic of active research. In this regard, this study introduces a practical approach to determine an optimal tension parameter by taking into accoun…
In this paper we enhance the well-known fifth order WENO shock-capturing scheme by using deep learning techniques. This fine-tuning of an existing algorithm is implemented by training a rather small neural network to modify the smoothness indicators of the WENO scheme in order to improve the numerical results especially at discontinuities. In our approach no further post-processing is needed to ensure the consistency of the method, which simplifies the method and increases the effect of the neural network. Moreover, the convergence of the resulting scheme can be theoretically proven. We demons…
Context. Several numerical problems require the interpolation of discrete data that present various types of discontinuities. The radiative transfer is a typical example of such a problem. This calls for high-order well-behaved techniques to interpolate both smooth and discontinuous data. Aims. The final aim is to propose new techniques suitable for applications in the context of numerical radiative transfer. Methods. We have proposed and tested two different techniques. Essentially non-oscillatory (ENO) techniques generate several candidate interpolations based on different substencils. The s…
The lack of smoothness is a common feature of weak solutions of nonlinear hyperbolic equations and is a crucial issue in their approximation. This has motivated several efforts to define appropriate indicators, based on the values of the approximate solutions, in order to detect the most troublesome regions of the domain. This information helps to adapt the approximation scheme in order to avoid spurious oscillations when using high-order schemes. In this paper we propose a genuinely multidimensional extension of the WENO procedure in order to overcome the limitations of indicators based on di…
The goal of this work is to introduce new families of shock-capturing high-order numerical methods for systems of conservation laws that combine Fast WENO (FWENO) and Optimal WENO (OWENO) reconstructions with Approximate Taylor methods for the time discretization. FWENO reconstructions are based on smoothness indicators that require a lower number of calculations than the standard ones. OWENO reconstructions are based on a definition of the nonlinear weights that allows one to unconditionally attain the optimal order of accuracy regardless of the order of critical points. Approximate Taylor me…

We propose a class of essentially non-oscillatory schemes with adaptive order (ENO-AO) for solving hyperbolic conservation laws. The new schemes select candidate stencils by novel smoothness indicators which are the measurements of the minimum discrepancy between the reconstructed polynomials and the neighboring cell averages. The new smoothness indicators measure the smoothness of candidate stencils with unequal sizes in a uniform way, so that we can directly use them to select the optimal stencil from candidates that range from first-order all the way up to the designed high-order. Some benc…
Runge-Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin Method Based on Flux Vector Splitting with Constrained Optimization-based TVB(D)-minmod Limiter for Solving Hyperbolic Conservation Laws
We consider a class of "filtered" schemes for first order time dependent Hamilton-Jacobi equations and prove a general convergence result for this class of schemes. A typical filtered scheme is obtained mixing a high-order scheme and a monotone scheme according to a filter function $F$ which decides where the scheme has to switch from one scheme to the other. A crucial role for this switch is played by a parameter $\varepsilon=\varepsilon({Δt,Δx})>0$ which goes to 0 as the time and space steps $(Δt,Δx)$ are going to 0 and does not depend on the time $t_n$, for each iteration $n$. The tuning of…

We present a new polynomial-free prolongation scheme for Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) simulations of compressible and incompressible computational fluid dynamics. The new method is constructed using a multi-dimensional kernel-based Gaussian Process (GP) prolongation model. The formulation for this scheme was inspired by the GP methods introduced by A. Reyes et al. (A New Class of High-Order Methods for Fluid Dynamics Simulation using Gaussian Process Modeling, Journal of Scientific Computing, 76 (2017), 443-480; A variable high-order shock-capturing finite difference method with GP-WENO, Jou…
This paper develops a shock capturing approach for high-order correction procedure via reconstruction (CPR) method with Legendre-Gauss solution points. Shock regions are treated by novel compact nonuniform nonlinear weighted (CNNW) schemes, which have the same solution points as the CPR method. CNNW schemes are constructed by discretizing flux derivatives based on Riemann fluxes at flux points in one cell and using nonuniform nonlinear weighted (NNW) interpolations to obtain the left and right values at flux points. Then, a priori subcell p-adaptive CNNW limiting of the CPR method is proposed …
