We study the star-disc interaction in the presence of the strong magnetic field ($B_\star=6.2kG$) of a slowly rotating star. This situation describes a post-merger of the spectral type B and has not been previously investigated. We perform a set of resistive and viscosity $2.5D$-magnetohydrodynamical simulations using the PLUTO code. Based on our previous work, we consider the initial gas disc density $ρ_{d0}=10^{-13}\mathrm{gcm}^{-3}$ since it describes the conditions around IRAS 17449+2320 well. We find that the fall of gas towards the star occurs in the mid-plane, and remarkably, intermittent backflow takes place in the mid-plane in all of our models for $R\geq10R_\star$. However, we do not rule out that the funnel effect may occur and cause the accretion closer to the poles. Also, when larger values of viscosity ($α_ν=1$) and stellar rotation rate ($δ_\star=0.2$) are considered, we find that the disc exhibits a thickening which is characteristic of FS~CMa-type stellar objects. Additionally, we find that the poloidal magnetic field lines twist over short periods of time, leading to magnetic reconnection causing coronal heating that could explain the presence of the Raman lines found observationally in several FS~CMa stars. Lastly, we find the formation of several knots in the magnetic field lines near and in the mid-plane of the disc which produce perturbations in the density and velocity components, as well as the formation of shallow gaps whose position depends on the inflation of the magnetic field lines.
HST/STIS spectra of the small clumps and filaments closest to the central star in VY CMa reveal that the very strong K I emission and TiO and VO molecular emission, long thought to form in a dusty circumstellar shell, actually originate in a few small clumps 100's of AU from the star. The K I lines are 10 to 20 times stronger in these nearest ejecta than on the star. The observations also confirm VO as a circumstellar molecule. In this letter we discuss the spectra of the features, their motions and ages, and the identification of the molecular emission. The strength of the atomic and molecula…
FS CMa type stars is a group of ~70 objects formerly known as unclassified stars with the B[e] phenomenon. Their very strong emission-line spectra in combination with a nearly main-sequence luminosity suggest the binary nature for them. They possess strong IR excesses due to radiation of circumstellar dust that implies a compact distribution probably in a circumbinary disk. Our long-term spectroscopic monitoring revealed neutral metal lines, which always include that of Li I 6708 Å, in the spectra of some FS CMa objects indicating the presence of a cool star. We present a summary of our result…
Close encounters between young stellar objects in star forming clusters are expected to dramatically perturb circumstellar disks. Such events are witnessed in numerical simulations of star formation, but few direct observations of ongoing encounters have been made. Here we report sub-0".1 resolution Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) observations towards the million year old binary protostar Z CMa in dust continuum and molecular line emission. A point source ~4700 au from the binary has been discovered at both millimeter and centimeter wavelengths. It is l…
The circumstellar ammonia (NH$_3$) chemistry in evolved stars is poorly understood. Previous observations and modelling showed that NH$_3$ abundance in oxygen-rich stars is several orders of magnitude above that predicted by equilibrium chemistry. In this article, we characterise the spatial distribution and excitation of NH$_3$ in the O-rich circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of four diverse targets: IK Tau, VY CMa, OH 231.8+4.2, and IRC +10420 with multi-wavelength observations. We observed the 1.3-cm inversion line emission with the Very Large Array (VLA) and submillimetre rotational line emiss…
The relationship between young stellar clusters and respective parental molecular clouds is still an open issue: for instance, are the similarities between substructures of clouds and clusters just a coincidence? Or would they be the indication of a physical relationship? In order to address these issues, we have studied the CMa OB1/R1 region that shows evidence for a complex star formation history. We obtained molecular clouds mapping with the IRAM-30 metre telescope to reveal the physical conditions of an unexplored side of the CMa region aiming to compare the morphology of the clouds with t…
Context. Z\,CMa is a binary composed of an embedded Herbig Be and an FU Ori class star separated by $\sim100$ au. Observational evidence indicate a complex environment in which each star has a circumstellar disk and drives a jet, and the whole system is embedded in a large dusty envelope. Aims. We aim to probe the circumbinary environment of Z\,CMa in the inner 400 au in scattered light. Methods. We use high contrast imaging polarimetry with VLT/NaCo at $H$ and $K_s$ bands. Results. The central binary is resolved in both bands. The polarized images show three bright and complex structures: a c…
The complex circumstellar ejecta of highly evolved, cool hypergiants are indicative of multiple, asymmetric mass loss events. To explore whether such episodic, non-isotropic mass loss may be driven by surface magnetic activity, we have observed the archetypical cool hypergiant VY CMa with the XMM-Newton X-ray satellite observatory. The hypergiant itself is not detected in these observations. From the upper limit on the X-ray flux from VY CMa at the time of our observations ($F_{X,UL}~\approx~8\times10^{-14} {\rm~erg~cm}^{-2} {\rm~s}^{-1}$, corresponding to $\log~L_X/L_{bol}\leq-8$), we estimat…
Expanding nebulae are produced by mass loss from stars, especially during late stages of evolution. Multi-dimensional simulation of these nebulae requires high resolution near the star and permits resolution that decreases with distance from the star, ideally with adaptive timesteps. We report the implementation and testing of static mesh-refinement in the radiation-magnetohydrodynamics code PION, and document its performance for 2D and 3D calculations. The bow shock produced by a hot, magnetized, slowly rotating star as it moves through the magnetized ISM is simulated in 3D, highlighting diff…
We report the discovery of water maser emission at frequencies above 1 THz. Using the GREAT instrument on SOFIA, we have detected emission in the 1.296411 THz 8(27)-7(34) transition of water toward three oxygen-rich evolved stars: W Hya, U Her, and VY CMa. An upper limit on the 1.296 THz line flux was obtained toward R Aql. Near-simultaneous observations of the 22.23508 GHz 6(16)-5(23) water maser transition were carried out towards all four sources using the Effelsberg 100m telescope. The measured line fluxes imply 22 GHz / 1.296 THz photon luminosity ratios of 0.012, 0.12, and 0.83 respectiv…
The observed emission lines of Be stars originate from a circumstellar Keplerian disk that are generally well explained by the Viscous Decretion Disk model. In an earlier work we performed the modeling of the full light curve of the bright Be star $ω$ CMa (Ghoreyshi et al. 2018) with the 1-D time-dependent hydrodynamics code SINGLEBE and the Monte Carlo radiative-transfer code HDUST. We used the V -band light curve that probes the inner disk through four disk formation and dissipation cycles. This new study compares predictions of the same set of model parameters with time-resolved photometry …
An exotic environment surrounds the young stellar groups associated with the Canis Major (CMa) OB1/R1 region, which probably was formed under feedback from at least three supernova events having occurred a few million years ago. We use astrometric data from the Gaia-DR2 to confirm the membership of the stars in CMa R1, based on proper motion and parallax, which revealed 514 new members and candidates. The mean age of 5 Myr estimated from the color-magnitude diagram characterizes the sources as likely pre-main sequence candidates. In total, a sample of 694 stars detected with the T80-South tele…
We use Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 5 science verification observations of the red supergiant VY CMa to study the polarization of SiO thermal/masers lines and dust continuum at ~1.7 mm wavelength. We analyse both linear and circular polarization and derive the magnetic field strength and structure, assuming the polarization of the lines originates from the Zeeman effect, and that of the dust originates from aligned dust grains. We also discuss other effects that could give rise to the observed polarization. We detect, for the first time, significant polarization (~3%) of t…

$ξ^1$ CMa is a monoperiodically pulsating, magnetic $β$ Cep star with magnetospheric X-ray emission which, uniquely amongst magnetic stars, is clearly modulated with the star's pulsation period. The rotational period $P_{\rm rot}$ has yet to be identified, with multiple competing claims in the literature. We present an analysis of a large ESPaDOnS dataset with a 9-year baseline. The longitudinal magnetic field $\langle B_{\rm Z}\rangle$ shows a significant annual variation, suggesting that $P_{\rm rot}$ is at least on the order of decades. The possibility that the star's H$α$ emission originat…
The processes leading to dust formation and the subsequent role it plays in driving mass loss in cool evolved stars is an area of intense study. Here we present high resolution ALMA Science Verification data of the continuum emission around the highly evolved oxygen-rich red supergiant VY CMa. These data enable us to study the dust in its inner circumstellar environment at a spatial resolution of 129 mas at 321 GHz and 59 mas at 658 GHz, thus allowing us to trace dust on spatial scales down to 11 R$_{\star}$ (71 AU). Two prominent dust components are detected and resolved. The brightest dust c…
We present a detailed photometric and spectroscopic analysis of DD CMa, based on published survey photometry and new spectroscopic data. We find an improved orbital period of $P_\mathrm{o}= 2.0084530 \pm 0.0000006 ~\mathrm{d}$. Our spectra reveal H$β$ and H$α$ absorptions with weak emission shoulders and we also find color excess in the WISE multiband photometry, interpreted as signatures of circumstellar matter. We model the $V$-band orbital light curve derived from the ASAS and ASAS-SN surveys, assuming a semidetached configuration and using the mass ratio and temperature of the hotter star …
Context: FS Canis Majoris (FS CMa, HD 45677) is an unclassified B[e] star surrounded by an inclined dust disk. The evolutionary stage of FS CMa is still debated. Perpendicular to the circumstellar disk, a bipolar outflow was detected. Infrared aperture-synthesis imaging provides us with a unique opportunity to study the disk structure. Aims: Our aim is to study the intensity distribution of the disk of FS CMa in the mid-infrared L and N bands. Methods: We performed aperture-synthesis imaging of FS CMa with the MATISSE instrument (Multi AperTure mid-Infrared SpectroScopic Experiment) in the low…
The effect of misalignment between the magnetic field $\magB$ and the angular momentum $\Jang$ of molecular cloud cores on the angular momentum evolution during the gravitational collapse is investigated by ideal and non-ideal MHD simulations. For the non-ideal effect, we consider the ohmic and ambipolar diffusion. Previous studies that considered the misalignment reported qualitatively contradicting results. Magnetic braking was reported as being either strengthened or weakened by misalignment in different studies. We conducted simulations of cloud-core collapse by varying the stability param…
There is an increasing body of evidence that suggests that Be disks are well described by the Viscous Decretion Disk (VDD) model according to which the formation and structure of the disk depend on the kinematic viscosity of the gas. However, most observational tests of the VDD to-date were done for systems that do not display strong temporal variability. From this analysis we (1) obtain a realistic physical model of the circumstellar environment; (2) measure the viscosity parameter of the gas, both during the formation and dissipation phases of the disk; (3) obtain a reliable estimate of the …
The transport of angular momentum by magnetic fields is a crucial physical process in formation and evolution of stars and disks. Because the ionization degree in star forming clouds is extremely low, non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects such as ambipolar diffusion and Ohmic dissipation work strongly during protostellar collapse. These effects have significant impacts in the early phase of star formation as they redistribute magnetic flux and suppress angular momentum transport by magnetic fields. We perform three-dimensional nested-grid radiation magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) simulations …

A significative fraction of all massive stars in the Milky Way move supersonically through their local interstellar medium (ISM), producing bow shock nebulae by wind-ISM interaction. The stability of these observed astrospheres around cool massive stars challenges precedent two-dimensional (magneto-)hydrodynamical simulations of their surroundings. We present three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamical (3D MHD) simulations of the circumstellar medium of runaway M-type red supergiant stars moving with velocity v_star= 50 km/s. We treat the stellar wind with a Parker spiral and assume a 7 microG ma…
The driving mechanism of massive outflows observed in high-mass star-forming regions is investigated using three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and protostellar evolution calculations. In our previous paper, we showed that the mass outflow rate depends strongly on the mass accretion rate onto the circumstellar disk around a high-mass protostar, and massive outflows may be driven by the magnetic effect in high-mass star-forming cores. In the present study, in order to verify that the MHD disk wind is the primary driving mechanism of massive outflows, we quantitatively compare outflow pr…
Building on our previous hydrodynamic study of the angular momenta of cloud cores formed during gravitational collapse of star-forming molecular gas in our previous work, we now examine core properties assuming ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Using the same sink-patch implementation for the \emph{Athena} MHD code, we characterize the statistical properties of cores, including the mass accretion rates, specific angular momenta, and alignments between the magnetic field and the spin axis of the core on the $0.1 \ \mathrm{pc}$ scale. Our simulations, which reproduce the observed relation betwee…
Recent high resolution observations unveil ring structures in circumstellar disks. The origin of these rings has been widely investigated under various theoretical scenarios. In this work we perform global 3D non-ideal MHD simulations including effects from both Ohmic resistivity and ambipolar diffusion (AD) to model the HL Tau disk. The non-ideal MHD diffusion profiles are calculated based on the global dust evolution calculation including sintering effects. Disk ionization structure changes dramatically across the snow line due to the change of dust size distribution close to snow line of ma…
Recent observations have suggested that circumstellar disks may commonly form around young stellar objects. Although the formation of circumstellar disks can be a natural result of the conservation of angular momentum in the parent cloud, theoretical studies instead show disk formation to be difficult from dense molecular cores magnetized to a realistic level, owing to efficient magnetic braking that transports a large fraction of the angular momentum away from the circumstellar region. We review recent progress in the formation and early evolution of disks around young stellar objects of both…
Non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is the dominant process. We investigate the effect of magnetic fields (ideal and non-ideal) and turbulence (sub- and transsonic) on the formation of circumstellar discs that form nearly simultaneously with the formation of the protostar. This is done by modelling the gravitational collapse of a 1~M$_\odot$ gas cloud that is threaded with a magnetic field and imposed with both rotational and turbulent velocities. We investigate magnetic fields that are parallel/anti-parallel and perpendicular to the rotation axis, two rotation rates and four Mach numbers. Di…
For the Class 0 protostar, L1527, we compare 131 polarization vectors from SCUPOL/JCMT, SHARP/CSO and TADPOL/CARMA observations with the corresponding model polarization vectors of four ideal-MHD, non-turbulent, cloud core collapse models. These four models differ by their initial magnetic fields before collapse; two initially have aligned fields (strong and weak) and two initially have orthogonal fields (strong and weak) with respect to the rotation axis of the L1527 core. Only the initial weak orthogonal field model produces the observed circumstellar disk within L1527. This is a characteris…
We investigate the use of 183 GHz H2O masers for characterization of the physical conditions and mass loss process in the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars. We used APEX SEPIA Band 5 to observe the 183 GHz H2O line towards 2 Red Supergiant and 3 Asymptotic Giant Branch stars. Simultaneously, we observed lines in 28SiO v0, 1, 2 and 3, and for 29SiO v0 and 1. We detected the 183 GHz H2O line towards all the stars with peak flux densities greater than 100 Jy, including a new detection from VY CMa. Towards all 5 targets, the water line had indications of being due to maser emission and had …
Spectropolarimetric surveys reveal that 8-10\% of OBA stars harbor large-scale magnetic fields, but thus far no such fields have been detected in any classical Be stars. Motivated by this, we present here MHD simulations for how a pre-existing Keplerian disc -- like that inferred to form from decretion of material from rapidly rotating Be stars -- can be disrupted by a rotation-aligned stellar dipole field. For characteristic stellar and disc parameters of a near-critically rotating B2e star, we find that a polar surface field strength of just 10 G can significantly disrupt the disc, while a f…
We present 3D MHD simulations of the wind-wind interactions between a solar type star and a short period hot Jupiter exoplanet. This is the first such simulation in which the stellar surface evolution is studied in detail. In our simulations, a planetary outflow, based on models of FUV evaporation of the exoplanets upper atmosphere, results in the build-up of circumstellar and circumplanetary material which accretes onto the stellar surface in a form of coronal rain, in which the rain is HJ wind material falling onto the stellar surface. We have conducted a suite of mixed geometry high resolut…
The astropause (heliopause for the Sun) is the tangential discontinuity separating the stellar wind from the interstellar plasma. The global shape of the heliopause is a matter of debates. Two types of the shape are under discussion: comet-like and tube-like. In the second type the two-jets oriented toward the stellar rotation axis are formed by the action of azimuthal component of the stellar magnetic field. We explore a simplified global astrosphere in which: (1) the surrounding and moving with respect to the star circumstellar medium is fully ionized, (2) the interstellar magnetic field is …

We model the time dependent radio emission from a disk accretion event in a T-Tauri star using 3D, ideal magnetohydrodynamic simulations combined with a gyrosynchrotron emission and radiative transfer model. We predict for the first time, the multi-frequency (1$-$1000 GHz) intensity and circular polarisation from a flaring T-Tauri star. A flux tube, connecting the star with its circumstellar disk, is populated with a distribution of non-thermal electrons which is allowed to decay exponentially after a heating event in the disk and the system is allowed to evolve. The energy distribution of the…
Context. 55 Cancri hosts five known exoplanets, most notably the hot super-Earth 55 Cnc e, which is one of the hottest known transiting super-Earths. Aims. Due to the short orbital separation and host star brightness, 55 Cnc e provides one of the best opportunities for studying star-planet interactions (SPIs). We aim to understand possible SPIs in this system, which requires a detailed understanding of the stellar magnetic field and wind impinging on the planet. Methods. Using spectropolarimetric observations, and Zeeman Doppler Imaging, we derive a map of the large-scale stellar magnetic fiel…
We present results of 3D numerical simulations of magnetically confined, radiatively driven stellar winds of massive stars, conducted using the astrophysical MHD code Pluto, with a focus on understanding the rotational variability of radio and sub-mm emission. Radiative driving is implemented according to the Castor, Abbott and Klein theory of radiatively driven winds. Many magnetic massive stars posses a magnetic axis which is inclined with respect to the rotational axis. This misalignment leads to a complex wind structure as magnetic confinement, centrifugal acceleration and radiative drivin…
The turbulence driven by gravitational instabilities (GIs) can amplify magnetic fields in massive gaseous disks. This GI dynamo may appear in young circumstellar disks, whose weak ionization challenges other amplification routes, as well as in active galactic nuclei. Although regarded as a large-scale dynamo, only local simulations have so far described its kinematic regime. We study the GI dynamo in global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models of accretion disks, focusing on its kinematic phase. We perform resistive MHD simulations with the Pluto code for different radiative cooling times and elec…
We investigate whether or not the low ionisation fractions in molecular cloud cores can solve the `magnetic braking catastrophe', where magnetic fields prevent the formation of circumstellar discs around young stars. We perform three-dimensional smoothed particle non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations of the gravitational collapse of one solar mass molecular cloud cores, incorporating the effects of ambipolar diffusion, Ohmic resistivity and the Hall effect alongside a self-consistent calculation of the ionisation chemistry assuming 0.1 micron grains. When including only ambipolar di…
