In this paper we investigate the solution of inverse problems with neural network ansatz functions with generalized decision functions. The relevant observation for this work is that such functions can approximate typical test cases, such as the Shepp-Logan phantom, better, than standard neural networks. Moreover, we show that the convergence analysis of numerical methods for solving inverse problems with shallow generalized neural network functions leads to more intuitive convergence conditions, than for deep affine linear neural networks.
This paper concerns the use of asymptotic expansions for the efficient solving of forward and inverse problems involving a nonlinear singularly perturbed time-dependent reaction--diffusion--advection equation. By using an asymptotic expansion with the local coordinates in the transition-layer region, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a smooth solution with a sharp transition layer for a three-dimensional partial differential equation. Moreover, with the help of asymptotic expansion, a simplified model is derived for the corresponding inverse source problem, which is close to the origina…
Consider the problem of finding the maximal nonpositive solvent $Φ$ of the quadratic matrix equation (QME) $X^2 + BX + C =0$ with $B$ being a nonsingular $M$-matrix and $C$ an $M$-matrix such that $B^{-1}C\ge 0$, and $B - C - I$ a nonsingular $M$-matrix. Such QME arises from an overdamped vibrating system. Recently, Yu et al. ({\em Appl. Math. Comput.}, 218: 3303--3310, 2011) proved that $ρ(Φ)\le 1$ for this QME. In this paper, we slightly improve their result and prove $ρ(Φ)< 1$, which is important for the quadratic convergence of the structure-preserving doubling algorithm. Then, a new globa…

We propose an eigensolver and the corresponding package, GCGE, for solving large scale eigenvalue problems. This method is the combination of damping idea, subspace projection method and inverse power method with dynamic shifts. To reduce the dimensions of projection subspaces, a moving mechanism is developed when the number of desired eigenpairs is large. The numerical methods, implementing techniques and the structure of the package are presented. Plenty of numerical results are provided to demonstrate the efficiency, stability and scalability of the concerned eigensolver and the package GCG…
Inverse problems in fluid dynamics are ubiquitous in science and engineering, with applications ranging from electronic cooling system design to ocean modeling. We propose a general and robust approach for solving inverse problems in the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations by combining deep neural networks and numerical partial differential equation (PDE) schemes. Our approach expresses numerical simulation as a computational graph with differentiable operators. We then solve inverse problems by constrained optimization, using gradients calculated from the computational graph with reverse-mod…
Deep learning and (deep) neural networks are emerging tools to address inverse problems and image reconstruction tasks. Despite outstanding performance, the mathematical analysis for solving inverse problems by neural networks is mostly missing. In this paper, we introduce and rigorously analyze families of deep regularizing neural networks (RegNets) of the form $B_α+ N_{θ(α)} B_α$, where $B_α$ is a classical regularization and the network $N_{θ(α)} B_α$ is trained to recover the missing part $\operatorname{Id}_X - B_α$ not found by the classical regularization. We show that these regularizing…
This paper considers the temporal discretization of an inverse problem subject to a time fractional diffusion equation. Firstly, the convergence of the L1 scheme is established with an arbitrary sectorial operator of spectral angle $< π/2 $, that is the resolvent set of this operator contains $ \{z\in\mathbb C\setminus\{0\}:\ |\operatorname{Arg} z|< θ\}$ for some $ π/2 < θ< π$. The relationship between the time fractional order $α\in (0, 1)$ and the constants in the error estimates is precisely characterized, revealing that the L1 scheme is robust as $ α$ approaches $ 1 $. Then an inverse prob…
This work characterizes, analytically and numerically, two major effects of the quadratic Wasserstein ($W_2$) distance as the measure of data discrepancy in computational solutions of inverse problems. First, we show, in the infinite-dimensional setup, that the $W_2$ distance has a smoothing effect on the inversion process, making it robust against high-frequency noise in the data but leading to a reduced resolution for the reconstructed objects at a given noise level. Second, we demonstrate that for some finite-dimensional problems, the $W_2$ distance leads to optimization problems that have …
A new algorithm for the stable solution of a three-dimensional scalar inverse problem of acoustic sounding of an inhomogeneous medium in a cylindrical region is proposed. The data of the problem is the complex amplitude of the wave field, measured outside the region of acoustic inhomogeneities in a cylindrical layer. Using the Fourier transform and Fourier series, the inverse problem is reduced to solving a set of one-dimensional Fredholm integral equations of the first kind, to the subsequent calculation of the complex amplitude of the wave field in the region of inhomogeneity, and then to fi…

We propose and study a class of novel algorithms that aim at solving bilinear and quadratic inverse problems. Using a convex relaxation based on tensorial lifting, and applying first-order proximal algorithms, these problems could be solved numerically by singular value thresholding methods. However, a direct realization of these algorithms for, e.g., image recovery problems is often impracticable, since computations have to be performed on the tensor-product space, whose dimension is usually tremendous. To overcome this limitation, we derive tensor-free versions of common singular value thres…

Recovering a function or high-dimensional parameter vector from indirect measurements is a central task in various scientific areas. Several methods for solving such inverse problems are well developed and well understood. Recently, novel algorithms using deep learning and neural networks for inverse problems appeared. While still in their infancy, these techniques show astonishing performance for applications like low-dose CT or various sparse data problems. However, there are few theoretical results for deep learning in inverse problems. In this paper, we establish a complete convergence ana…

The time-varying quadratic miniaturization (TVQM) problem, as a hotspot currently, urgently demands a more reliable and faster--solving model. To this end, a novel adaptive coefficient constructs framework is presented and realized to improve the performance of the solution model, leading to the adaptive zeroing-type neural dynamics (AZTND) model. Then the AZTND model is applied to solve the TVQM problem. The adaptive coefficients can adjust the step size of the model online so that the solution model converges faster. At the same time, the integration term develops to enhance the robustness o…

We consider the simulation of Bayesian statistical inverse problems governed by large-scale linear and nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms are standard techniques to solve such problems. However, MCMC techniques are computationally challenging as they require several thousands of forward PDE solves. The goal of this paper is to introduce a fractional deep neural network based approach for the forward solves within an MCMC routine. Moreover, we discuss some approximation error estimates and illustrate the efficiency of our approach via sev…
This paper proposes a neural network approach for solving two classical problems in the two-dimensional inverse wave scattering: far field pattern problem and seismic imaging. The mathematical problem of inverse wave scattering is to recover the scatterer field of a medium based on the boundary measurement of the scattered wave from the medium, which is high-dimensional and nonlinear. For the far field pattern problem under the circular experimental setup, a perturbative analysis shows that the forward map can be approximated by a vectorized convolution operator in the angular direction. Motiv…
We consider two main inverse Sturm-Liouville problems: the problem of recovery of the potential and the boundary conditions from two spectra or from a spectral density function. A simple method for practical solution of such problems is developed, based on the transmutation operator approach, new Neumann series of Bessel functions representations for solutions and the Gelfand-Levitan equation. The method allows one to reduce the inverse Sturm-Liouville problem directly to a system of linear algebraic equations, such that the potential is recovered from the first element of the solution vector.…
The inverse quantum scattering problem for the perturbed Bessel equation is considered. A direct and practical method for solving the problem is proposed. It allows one to reduce the inverse problem to a system of linear algebraic equations, and the potential is recovered from the first component of the solution vector of the system. The approach is based on a special form Fourier-Jacobi series representation for the transmutation operator kernel and the Gelfand-Levitan equation which serves for obtaining the system of linear algebraic equations. The convergence and stability of the method are…
