One of the most promising nascent technologies, quantum computation faces a major challenge: The need for stable computational building blocks. We present the quantum-optical realization of non-adiabatic holonomies that can be used as single-qubit quantum gates. The hallmark topological protection of non-Abelian geometric phases reduces the need for quantum error correction on a fundamental physical level, while the inherent non-adiabaticity of the structures paves the way for unprecedented miniaturization. To demonstrate their versatility, we realize the Hadamard and Pauli-X gates, experimentally show their non-Abelian nature, and combine them into a single-qubit quantum algorithm, the PQ penny flipover. The planar geometry of such designs enables them to be substituted for the conventional directional coupler meshes currently in wide-spread use in photonic quantum architectures across all platforms.
We construct a unified operator framework for quantum holonomies generated from bosonic systems. For a system whose Hamiltonian is bilinear in the creation and annihilation operators, we find a holonomy group determined only by a set of selected orthonormal modes obeying a stronger version of the adiabatic theorem. This photon-number independent description offers deeper insight as well as a computational advantage when compared to the standard formalism on geometric phases. In particular, a strong analogy between quantum holonomies and linear optical networks can be drawn. This relation provi…
Adiabatic following has been an widely-employed technique for achieving near-complete population transfer in a two-level quantum mechanical system. The theoretical basis, however, could be generalized to a broad class of systems exhibiting SU(2) symmetry. In the present work, we present an analogy of population transfer dynamics of two level system with that of light propagation in a classical one-dimensional photonic crystal, commonly known as distributed-Bragg-reflector (DBR).This formalism facilitates in adapting the idea of adiabatic following, more precisely the rapid adiabatic passage (R…

Comment on "Nongeometric Conditional Phase Shift via Adiabatic Evolution of Dark Eigenstates: A New Approach to Quantum Computation"
在[Phys. Rev. Lett.

Non-abelian gauge fields emerge naturally in the description of adiabatically evolving quantum systems having degenerate levels. Here we show that they also play a role in Thouless pumping in the presence of degenerate bands. To this end we consider a photonic Lieb lattice having two degenerate non-dispersive modes and we show that, when the lattice parameters are slowly modulated, the propagation of the photons bear the fingerprints of the underlying non-abelian gauge structure. The non-dispersive character of the bands enables a high degree of control on photon propagation. Our work paves th…

The aim of this article is to give a rigorous although simple treatment of the geometric notions around parallel transport in quantum mechanics. I start by defining the teleparallelism (or generalized Pancharatnam connection) between n-dimensional vector subspaces (or n-planes) of the whole Hilbert space. It forms the basis of the concepts of parallel transport and of both cyclic and non-cyclic holonomies in the Grassmann manifold of n-planes. They are introduced in the discrete case (broken lines) before being rendered 'continuous' (smooth curves) and the role of the geodesics is stressed. Th…
Geometric phases, which are ubiquitous in quantum mechanics, are commonly more than only scalar quantities. Indeed, often they are matrix-valued objects that are connected with non-Abelian geometries. Here we show how generalized, non-Abelian geometric phases can be realized using electromagnetic waves travelling through coupled photonic waveguide structures. The waveguides implement an effective Hamiltonian possessing a degenerate dark subspace, in which an adiabatic evolution can occur. The associated quantum metric induces the notion of a geodesic that defines the optimal adiabatic evolutio…

The integration of quantum emitters with integrated photonics enables complex quantum photonic circuits that are necessary for photonic implementation of quantum simulators, computers, and networks. Thin-film lithium niobate is an ideal material substrate for quantum photonics because it can tightly confine light in small waveguides and has a strong electro-optic effect that can switch and modulate single photons at low power and high speed. However, lithium niobite lacks efficient single-photon emitters, which are essential for scalable quantum photonic circuits. We demonstrate deterministic …
We show how a quantum state in a microwave cavity mode can be transferred to and stored in a phononic mode via an intermediate magnon mode in a magnomechanical system. For this we consider a ferrimagnetic yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere inserted in a microwave cavity, where the microwave and magnon modes are coupled via a magnetic-dipole interaction and the magnon and phonon modes in the YIG sphere are coupled via magnetostrictive forces. By modulating the cavity and magnon detunings and the driving of the magnon mode in time, a Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP)-like coherent transf…

Resonant dissipation-enabled adiabatic quantum state transfer processes between the polarization degrees of freedom of a single photon wave packet and quantum emitters are discussed. These investigations generalize previous work [N. Trautmann and G. Alber, Phys. Rev. A 93, 053807 (2015)] by taking into account the properties of the spontaneously emitted photon wave packet and of non adiabatic corrections. It is demonstrated that the photonic degrees of freedoms of these adiabatic one-photon quantum state transfer processes can be used for the passive, heralded and deterministic preparation of …
Cavity magnomechanics provides a readily-controllable hybrid system, that consisted of cavity mode, magnon mode, and phonon mode, for quantum state manipulation. To implement a fast-and-robust state transfer between the hybrid photon-magnon mode and the phonon mode, we propose two accelerated adiabatic-passage protocols individually based on the counterdiabatic Hamiltonian for transitionless quantum driving and the Levis-Riesenfeld invariant for inverse engineering. Both the counterdiabatic Hamiltonian and the Levis-Riesenfeld invariant generally apply to the continuous-variable systems with a…
