Employing the Einstein-scalar field system, we demonstrate an approach for proving high co-dimensional nonlinear instability of naked-singularity solutions as constructed by Christodoulou in [18]. We further investigate the censorship of Christodoulou's naked singularity and show that a tiny anisotropic perturbation arising from the outgoing characteristic initial data would lead to the emergence of an anisotropic apparent horizon, which covers and censors the naked singularity. Our approach advances the hyperbolic short-pulse method by not requiring the aid of additional large parameters, by permitting the use of initial perturbations for the shear tensor and the derivative of scalar field to be with finite $BV$ and $C^0$ norms, and by allowing the initial perturbation to be arbitrarily small in scale-critical norms. New elliptic arguments based on non-perturbative methods are also developed.
We show that the behaviour of outgoing radial null geodesic congruence on the apparent horizon is related to the property of nakedness in spherical dust collapse justifying the difference between the Penrose diagrams in the naked and covered dust collapse scenarios. We provide arguments suggesting that the relationship could be generally valid.
In this paper the structure of the generalized Vaidya spacetime when the type-II of the matter field satisfies the equation of the state $P=ρ$ is investigated. Satisfying all energy conditions we show that this spacetime contains the 'eternal' naked singularity. It means that once the singularity is formed it will never be covered with the apparent horizon. However, in the case of the apparent horizon formation the resulting object is a white hole. We also prove that this spacetime contains only null naked singularity.
How to describe a black hole embedded in an expanding universe is an important topic. Some models about this issue are suggested by assuming that the metric is a conformal transformation of the Schwarzschild metric or of the isotropic black hole metric. However, there exists naked singularities in the two metrics. Recently, it is argued that the singularity in the Sultana-Dyer space-time is covered by an apparent horizon surface. But we find that such an apparent horizon does not exist if the null energy condition holds.
We investigate what are the key physical features that cause the development of a naked singularity, rather than a black hole, as the end-state of spherical gravitational collapse. We show that sufficiently strong shearing effects near the singularity delay the formation of the apparent horizon. This exposes the singularity to an external observer, in contrast to a black hole, which is hidden behind an event horizon due to the early formation of an apparent horizon.
In this paper, we consider the gravitational collapse of generalized Vaidya space-time when the matter satisfies the equation of the state either $P=0$ or $P=-αρ$, where $0 < α< 1$. We show that in the case when type I of matter field is dust, then the apparent horizon will never appear, but there is now a family of null radial future-directed geodesics which terminated at the central singularity in the past. Also, we show that in the case of negative pressure, the result of the gravitational collapse might be the naked singularity and the apparent horizon appears and in very short time disapp…
We numerically investigate the gravitational collapse of collisionless particles in spheroidal configurations both in four and five-dimensional (5D) space-time. We repeat the simulation performed by Shapiro and Teukolsky (1991) that announced an appearance of a naked singularity, and also find that the similar results in 5D version. That is, in a collapse of a highly prolate spindle, the Kretschmann invariant blows up outside the matter and no apparent horizon forms. We also find that the collapses in 5D proceed rapidly than in 4D, and the critical prolateness for appearance of apparent horizo…
We examine the global structure of scalar field critical collapse spacetimes using a characteristic double-null code. It can integrate past the horizon without any coordinate problems, due to the careful choice of constraint equations used in the evolution. The limiting sequence of sub- and supercritical spacetimes presents an apparent paradox in the expected Penrose diagrams, which we address in this paper. We argue that the limiting spacetime converges pointwise to a unique limit for all r>0, but not uniformly. The r=0 line is different in the two limits. We interpret that the two different …
Considering a strong field limit, we investigate the retrolensing phenomenon in the vicinity of a Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) naked singularity embedded in a scalar field. We assume that the light rays from a nearby source are reflected by the photon sphere of the naked singularity, acting as a lens, to create a pair of images. The analytic expressions of the lensing coefficients $\bar{a}$ and $\bar{b}$ are obtained, which are scalar dependent and discordant with \cite{Bozza:2002b}. Moreover, considering the powerful supermassive black hole candidates Sgr A* and M87*, we examined the influence…
We give observations about dualities where one of the dual theories is geometric. These are illustrated with a duality between the simple harmonic oscillator and a topological field theory. We then discuss the Wilson loop in the context of the AdS/CFT duality. We show that the Wilson loop calculation for certain asymptotically AdS scalar field spacetimes with naked singularities gives results qualitatively similar to that for the AdS black hole. In particular, it is apparent that (dimensional) metric parameters in the singular spacetimes permit a ``thermal screening'' interpretation for the qu…
We study the optical appearance and the apparent radiation flux of a thin accretion disk around the static Janis-Newman-Winicour naked singularity. We confine ourselves to the astrophysically most relevant case, when the solution possesses a photon sphere, assuming that the radiation emitted by the disk is described by the Novikov-Thorne model. The observable images resemble closely the visual appearance of the Schwarzschild black hole, as only quantitative differences are present. For the Janis-Newman-Winicour solution the accretion disk appears smaller, and its emission is characterized by a…
The presence and evolution of apparent horizons in a two-parameter family of spherically symmetric, time-dependent solutions of Brans-Dicke gravity are analyzed. These solutions were introduced to model space- and time-varying gravitational couplings and are supposed to represent central objects embedded in a spatially flat universe. We find that the solutions possess multiple evolving apparent horizons, both black hole horizons covering a central singularity and cosmological ones. It is not uncommon for two of these horizons to merge, leaving behind a naked singularity covered only by a cosmo…
We analyze here the structure of non-radial nonspacelike geodesics terminating in the past at a naked singularity formed as the end state of inhomogeneous dust collapse. The spectrum of outgoing nonspacelike null geodesics is examined analytically. The local and global visibility of the singularity is also examined by integrating numerically the null geodesics equations. The possible implications of existence of such families towards the appearance of the star in late stages of gravitational collapse are considered. It is seen that the outgoing non-radial geodesics give an appearance to the na…
The Sultana-Dyer solution of general relativity representing a black hole embedded in a special cosmological background is analysed. We find an expanding (weak) spacetime singularity instead of the reported conformal Killing horizon, which is covered by an expanding black hole apparent horizon (internal to a cosmological apparent horizon) for most of the history of the universe. This singularity was naked early on. The global structure of the solution is studied as well.
We study covariant entropy bounds in dynamical spacetimes with naked singularities. Specifically we study a spherically symmetric massless scalar field solution. The solution is an inhomogeneous cosmology with an initial spacelike singularity, and a naked timelike singularity at the origin. We construct the entropy flux 4-vector for the scalar field, and show by explicit computation that the generalized covariant bound $S_{L(B,B')}\le (A(B)-A(B'))/4 $ is violated for light sheets $L(B,B')$ in the neighbourhood of the (evolving) apparent horizon. We find no violations of the Bousso bound (for w…
Due to the failure of Birkhoff's theorem, black holes in f(R) gravity theories in which an effective time-varying cosmological "constant" is present are, in general, dynamical. Clifton's exact spherical solution of R^(1+δ) gravity, which is dynamical and describes a central object embedded in a spatially flat universe, is studied. It is shown that apparent black hole horizons disappear and a naked singularity emerges at late times.
We study the collapse of spheroidal configurations of collisionless particles in full general relativity. This setup was originally considered by Shapiro and Teukolsky (1991), where it was found that prolate configurations with a sufficiently large semimajor axis gave rise to diverging curvature, but no apparent horizon. This was taken as evidence for the formation of a naked singularity, in violation of cosmic censorship. We revisit such configurations using different coordinates/slicing, and considering a range of values for the semimajor axis and eccentricity of the initial matter distribut…
We construct and evolve non-rotating vacuum initial data with a ring singularity, based on a simple extension of the standard Brill-Lindquist multiple black-hole initial data, and search for event horizons with spatial slices that are toroidal when the ring radius is sufficiently large. While evolutions of the ring singularity are not numerically feasible for large radii, we find some evidence, based on configurations of multiple BHs arranged in a ring, that this configuration leads to singular limit where the horizon width has zero size, possibly indicating the presence of a naked singularity…
