Universality is a powerful concept, which enables making qualitative and quantitative predictions in systems with extensively many degrees of freedom. It finds realizations in almost all branches of physics, including in the realm of nonequilibrium systems. Our focus here is on its manifestations within a specific class of nonequilibrium stationary states: driven open quantum matter. Progress in this field is fueled by a number of uprising platforms ranging from light-driven quantum materials over synthetic quantum systems like cold atomic gases to the functional devices of the noisy intermediate scale quantum era. These systems share in common that, on the microscopic scale, they obey the laws of quantum mechanics, while detailed balance underlying thermodynamic equilibrium is broken due to the simultaneous presence of Hamiltonian unitary dynamics and nonunitary drive and dissipation. The challenge is then to connect this microscopic physics to macroscopic observables, and to identify universal collective phenomena that uniquely witness the breaking of equilibrium conditions, thus having no equilibrium counterparts. In the framework of a Lindblad-Keldysh field theory, we discuss on the one hand the principles delimiting thermodynamic equilibrium from driven open stationary states, and on the other hand show how unifying concepts such as symmetries, the purity of states, and scaling arguments are implemented. We then present instances of universal behavior structured into three classes: new realizations of paradigmatic nonequilibrium phenomena, including a survey of first experimental realizations; novel instances of nonequilibrium universality found in these systems made of quantum ingredients; and genuinely quantum phenomena out of equilibrium, including in fermionic systems. We also discuss perspectives for future research on driven open quantum matter.
The Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice is a paradigmatic system known to host a wealth of nontrivial topological phases and Majorana edge modes. In the static case, the Majorana edge modes are nondispersive. When the system is periodically driven in time, such edge modes can disperse and become chiral. We obtain the full phase diagram of the driven model as a function of the coupling and the driving period. We characterize the quantum criticality of the different topological phase transitions in both the static and driven model via the notions of Majorana-Wannier state correlation functions…
We demonstrate that the time evolution of the van Hove dynamical pair correlation function is governed by adiabatic forces that arise from the free energy and by superadiabatic forces that are induced by the flow of the van Hove function. The superadiabatic forces consist of drag, viscous, and structural contributions, as occur in active Brownian particles, in liquids under shear and in lane forming mixtures. For hard sphere liquids we present a power functional theory that predicts these universal force fields in quantitative agreement with our Brownian dynamics simulation results.
Physical understanding of how the interplay between symmetries and nonlinear effects can control the scaling and multiscaling properties in a coupled driven system, such as magnetohydrodynamic turbulence or turbulent binary fluid mixtures, remains elusive till the date. To address this generic issue, we construct a conceptual nonlinear hydrodynamic model, parametrised jointly by the nonlinear coefficients, and the spatial scaling of the variances of the advecting stochastic velocity and the stochastic additive driving force, respectively. By using a perturbative one-loop dynamic renormalisatio…
The statistics of the fluctuations of quantum many-body systems are highly revealing of their nature. In driven-dissipative systems displaying macroscopic quantum coherence, as exciton polariton condensates under incoherent pumping, the phase dynamics can be mapped to the stochastic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation. However, in two dimensions (2D), it was theoretically argued that the KPZ regime may be hindered by the presence of vortices, and a non-equilibrium BKT behavior was reported close to condensation threshold. We demonstrate here that, when a discretized 2D polariton system is consi…
Inspired by the recent viral epidemic outbreak and its consequent worldwide pandemic, we devise a model to capture the dynamics and the universality of the spread of such infectious diseases. The transition from a pre-critical to the post-critical phase is modeled by a percolation problem driven by random walks on a two-dimensional lattice with an extra average number $ρ$ of nonlocal links per site. Using the finite-size scaling analysis, we find that the effective exponents of the percolation transitions as well as the corresponding time thresholds, extrapolated to the infinite system size, a…
Universality aids consistent understanding of physical properties. This includes understanding the states of matter where a theory predicts how a property of a phase (solid, liquid, gas) changes with temperature or pressure. Here, we show that the matter above the critical point has a remarkable double universality not limited by pressure and temperature. The first universality is the transition between the liquidlike and gaslike states seen in the crossover of the specific heat on the dynamical length scale in deeply supercritical state and characterised by a fixed inversion point. The second…

We study the crossover between equilibrium and off-equilibrium dynamical universality classes in the Vicsek model near its ordering transition. Starting from the incompressible hydrodynamic theory of Chen et al \cite{chen2015critical}, we show that increasing the activity leads to a renormalization group (RG) crossover between the equilibrium ferromagnetic fixed point, with dynamical critical exponent $z = 2$, and the off-equilibrium active fixed point, with $z = 1.7$ (in $d=3$). We run simulations of the classic Vicsek model in the near-ordering regime and find that critical slowing down inde…
