We apply the gradient expansion approximation to the light-cone gauge, obtaining a separate universe picture at non-linear order in perturbation theory within this framework. Thereafter, we use it to generalize the $δN$ formalism in terms of light-cone perturbations. As a consistency check, we demonstrate the conservation of the gauge invariant curvature perturbation on uniform density hypersurface $ζ$ at the completely non-linear level. The approach studied provides a self-consistent framework to connect at non-linear level quantities from the primordial universe, such as $ζ$, written in terms of the light-cone parameters, to late time observables.
We present a general gauge invariant formalism for defining cosmological averages that are relevant for observations based on light-like signals. Such averages involve either null hypersurfaces corresponding to a family of past light-cones or compact surfaces given by their intersection with timelike hypersurfaces. Generalized Buchert-Ehlers commutation rules for derivatives of these light-cone averages are given. After introducing some adapted "geodesic light-cone" coordinates, we give explicit expressions for averaging the redshift to luminosity-distance relation and the so-called "redshift …
We study a conjecture involving the invariant volume of the past light-cone from an arbitrary observation point back to a fixed initial value surface. The conjecture is that a 4th order differential operator which occurs in the theory of conformal anomalies gives $8π$ when acted upon the invariant volume of the past light-cone. We show that an extended version of the conjecture is valid for an arbitrary homogeneous and isotropic geometry. First order perturbation theory about flat spacetime reveals a violation of the conjecture which, however, vanishes for any vacuum solution of the Einstein e…
The remarkable properties of the geodesic light-cone (GLC) coordinates allow analytic expressions for the light-cone observables, providing a new non-perturbative way for calculating the effects of inhomogeneities in our Universe. However, the gauge-invariance of these expressions in the GLC formalism has not been shown explicitly. Here we provide this missing part of the GLC formalism by proving the gauge-invariance of the GLC expressions for the light-cone observables, such as the observed redshift, the luminosity distance, and the physical area and volume of the observed sources. Our study …
We prove exact rotational dragging of local inertial axes (= spin axes of gyroscopes) by arbitrary cosmic energy-currents on the past light-cone of the gyroscope for linear perturbations of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies. Hence the principle formulated by Mach holds for arbitrary linear cosmological perturbations.
In a previous paper (G.Yoneda, Proc.R.Soc.London, A445,(1994),221), we proved the no-interaction theorem for four particles with the assumption that the (linear and angular) momentum on space-like planes is invariant. In this paper, we assume that the momentum on null cones is invariant and prove that there is no interaction for four particles.
The Unruh effect can not only arise out of the entanglement between modes of left and right Rindler wedges, but also between modes of future and past light cones. We explore the geometric phase resulting from this timelike entanglement between the future and past, showing that it can be captured in a simple $Λ$-system. This provides an alternative paradigm to the Unruh-deWitt detector. The Unruh effect has not been experimentally verified because the accelerations needed to excite a response from Unruh-deWitt detectors are prohibitively large. We demonstrate that a stationary but time-dependen…
We discuss a rigorous procedure for quantifying the difference between our past lightcone and the past lightcone of the fiducial Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker spacetime modeling the large-scale description of cosmological data in the standard $Λ\mathrm{CDM}$ scenario. This result is made possible by exploiting the scale-dependent distance functional between past lightcones recently introduced by us. We express this harmonic map type functional in terms of the physical quantities that characterize the actual measurements along our past lightcone, namely the area distance and the lensing d…
Most of cosmological observables are light-propagated. I will present coordinates adapted to the propagation of null-like signals as observed by a geodesic observer. These "geodesic light-cone (GLC) coordinates" are general, adapted to calculations in inhomogeneous geometries, and their properties make them useful for a large spectrum of applications, from the estimation of the distance-redshift relation, the average on our past light cone, the effect of the large-scale structure on the Hubble diagram, to weak lensing calculations.
Recently we solved the Einstein's field equations to obtain the exact solution of the cosmological model with the Morris-Thorne type wormhole. We found the apparent horizons and analyzed their geometric natures, including the causal tructures. We also derived the Hawking temperature near the apparent cosmological horizon with a proper definition of the Kodama vector. In this paper, we investigate the dynamic properties of the apparent horizons according to the distribution of cosmic matter. The matter-, radiation-, and lambda-dominated universes are considered as a single component universe. A…
Cosmological models typically neglect the complicated nature of the spacetime manifold at small scales in order to hypothesize idealized general relativistic solutions for describing the average dynamics of the Universe. Although these solutions are remarkably successful in accounting for data, they introduce a number of puzzles in cosmology, and their foundational assumptions are therefore important to test. In this paper, we go beyond the usual assumptions in cosmology and propose a formalism for averaging the local general relativistic spacetime on an observer's past null cone: we formulate…
The spectral distortion of the cosmic microwave background blackbody spectrum in a radially inhomogeneous spacetime, designed to exactly reproduce a LambdaCDM expansion history along the past light cone, is shown to exceed the upper bound established by COBE-FIRAS by a factor of approximately 3700. This simple observational test helps uncover a slew of pathological features that lie hidden inside the past light cone, including a radially contracting phase at decoupling and, if followed to its logical extreme, a naked singularity at the radially inhomogeneous Big Bang.
The geodesic-light-cone (GLC) coordinates are a useful tool to analyse light propagation and observations in cosmological models. In this article, we propose a detailed, pedagogical, and rigorous introduction to this coordinate system, explore its gauge degrees of freedom, and emphasize its interest when geometric optics is at stake. We then apply the GLC formalism to the homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi I cosmology. More than a simple illustration, this application (i) allows us to show that the Weinberg conjecture according to which gravitational lensing does not affect the proper area of…
We present in this paper a new application of the geodesic light-cone (GLC) gauge for weak lensing calculations. Using interesting properties of this gauge, we derive an exact expression of the amplification matrix - involving convergence, magnification and shear - and of the deformation matrix - involving the optical scalars. These expressions are simple and non-perturbative as long as no caustics are created on the past light-cone and are, by construction, free from the thin lens approximation. We apply these general expressions on the example of an Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model with an …
Isotropic inhomogeneous dust universes are analysed via observational coordinates based on the past light cones of the observer's galactic worldline. The field equations are reduced to a single first--order {\sc ode} in observational variables on the past light cone, completing the observational integration scheme. This leads naturally to an explicit exact solution which is locally nearly homogeneous (i.e. {\sc frw}), but at larger redshift develops inhomogeneity. New observational characterisations of homogeneity ({\sc frw} universes) are also given.

Characteristic methods show excellent promise in the evolution of single black hole spacetimes. The effective coupling with matter fields may help the numerical exploration of important astrophysical systems such as neutron star black hole binaries. To this end we investigate formalisms for numerical relativistic hydrodynamics which can be adaptable to null (characteristic) foliations of the spacetime. The feasibility of the procedure is demonstrated with one-dimensional results on the evolution of self-gravitating matter accreting onto a dynamical black hole.
It is shown by explicit construction of new metrics, that General Relativity can solve the exact Poinc$\acute{a}$re recurrence problem. In these solutions, the light cone, flips periodically between past and future, due to a periodically alternating arrow of the proper time. The geodesics in these universes show periodic Loschmidt's velocity reversion $v \to -v$, at critical points, which leads to recurrence. However, the matter tensors of some of these solutions exhibit unusual properties - such as, periodic variations in density and pressure. While this is to be expected in periodic models, …
Continuing work initiated in an earlier publication [Phys. Rev. D 69, 084007 (2004)], we construct a system of light-cone coordinates based at a geodesic world line of an arbitrary curved spacetime. The construction involves (i) an advanced-time or a retarded-time coordinate that labels past or future light cones centered on the world line, (ii) a radial coordinate that is an affine parameter on the null generators of these light cones, and (iii) angular coordinates that are constant on each generator. The spacetime metric is calculated in the light-cone coordinates, and it is expressed as an …
We prove that the focusing cubic wave equation in three spatial dimensions has a countable family of self-similar solutions which are smooth inside the past light cone of the singularity. These solutions are labeled by an integer index $n$ which counts the number of oscillations of the solution. The linearized operator around the $n$-th solution is shown to have $n+1$ negative eigenvalues (one of which corresponds to the gauge mode) which implies that all $n>0$ solutions are unstable. It is also shown that all $n>0$ solutions have a singularity outside the past light cone which casts doubt on …
This work applies a Rayleigh-Brillouin light spectrum analysis in order to establish a causality test by means of a frequency cone. This technique allows to identify forbidden and unforbidden regions in light scattering experiments and establishes if a set of linearized transport equations admits causal solutions. It is shown that, when studying a relativistic fluid with its acoustic modes interacting with light, Eckart's formalism yields a non causal behavior. In this case the solutions describing temperature, density and pressure fluctuations are located outside the frequency cone. In contra…
Here we prove a global existence theorem for the solutions of the semi-linear wave equation with critical non-linearity admitting a positive definite Hamiltonian. Formulating a parametrix for the wave equation in a globally hyperbolic curved spacetime, we derive an apriori pointwise bound for the solution of the nonlinear wave equation in terms of the initial energy, from which the global existence follows in a straightforward way. This is accomplished in two steps. First, based on Moncrief's light cone formulation we derive an expression for the scalar field in terms of integrals over the pas…
