Despite outstanding semantic scene segmentation in closed-worlds, deep neural networks segment novel instances poorly, which is required for autonomous agents acting in an open world. To improve out-of-distribution (OOD) detection for segmentation, we introduce a metacognitive approach in the form of a lightweight module that leverages entropy measures, segmentation predictions, and spatial context to characterize the segmentation model's uncertainty and detect pixel-wise OOD data in real-time. Additionally, our approach incorporates a novel method of generating synthetic OOD data in context with in-distribution data, which we use to fine-tune existing segmentation models with maximum entropy training. This further improves the metacognitive module's performance without requiring access to OOD data while enabling compatibility with established pre-trained models. Our resulting approach can reliably detect OOD instances in a scene, as shown by state-of-the-art performance on OOD detection for semantic segmentation benchmarks.
We introduce MOVE, a novel method to segment objects without any form of supervision. MOVE exploits the fact that foreground objects can be shifted locally relative to their initial position and result in realistic (undistorted) new images. This property allows us to train a segmentation model on a dataset of images without annotation and to achieve state of the art (SotA) performance on several evaluation datasets for unsupervised salient object detection and segmentation. In unsupervised single object discovery, MOVE gives an average CorLoc improvement of 7.2% over the SotA, and in unsupervi…

Safety-critical applications like autonomous driving use Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) for object detection and segmentation. The DNNs fail to predict when they observe an Out-of-Distribution (OOD) input leading to catastrophic consequences. Existing OOD detection methods were extensively studied for image inputs but have not been explored much for LiDAR inputs. So in this study, we proposed two datasets for benchmarking OOD detection in 3D semantic segmentation. We used Maximum Softmax Probability and Entropy scores generated using Deep Ensembles and Flipout versions of RandLA-Net as OOD scores…

Automatic segmentation of ground glass opacities and consolidations in chest computer tomography (CT) scans can potentially ease the burden of radiologists during times of high resource utilisation. However, deep learning models are not trusted in the clinical routine due to failing silently on out-of-distribution (OOD) data. We propose a lightweight OOD detection method that leverages the Mahalanobis distance in the feature space and seamlessly integrates into state-of-the-art segmentation pipelines. The simple approach can even augment pre-trained models with clinically relevant uncertainty …

In this paper, we tackle the detection of out-of-distribution (OOD) objects in semantic segmentation. By analyzing the literature, we found that current methods are either accurate or fast but not both which limits their usability in real world applications. To get the best of both aspects, we propose to mitigate the common shortcomings by following four design principles: decoupling the OOD detection from the segmentation task, observing the entire segmentation network instead of just its output, generating training data for the OOD detector by leveraging blind spots in the segmentation netwo…

In this work, we train a network to simultaneously perform segmentation and pixel-wise Out-of-Distribution (OoD) detection, such that the segmentation of unknown regions of scenes can be rejected. This is made possible by leveraging an OoD dataset with a novel contrastive objective and data augmentation scheme. By combining data including unknown classes in the training data, a more robust feature representation can be learned with known classes represented distinctly from those unknown. When presented with unknown classes or conditions, many current approaches for segmentation frequently exhi…

We present a self-supervised learning (SSL) method suitable for semi-global tasks such as object detection and semantic segmentation. We enforce local consistency between self-learned features, representing corresponding image locations of transformed versions of the same image, by minimizing a pixel-level local contrastive (LC) loss during training. LC-loss can be added to existing self-supervised learning methods with minimal overhead. We evaluate our SSL approach on two downstream tasks -- object detection and semantic segmentation, using COCO, PASCAL VOC, and CityScapes datasets. Our metho…
In this paper we present a novel loss function, called class-agnostic segmentation (CAS) loss. With CAS loss the class descriptors are learned during training of the network. We don't require to define the label of a class a-priori, rather the CAS loss clusters regions with similar appearance together in a weakly-supervised manner. Furthermore, we show that the CAS loss function is sparse, bounded, and robust to class-imbalance. We apply our CAS loss function with fully-convolutional ResNet101 and DeepLab-v3 architectures to the binary segmentation problem of salient object detection. We inves…

Image segmentation has many applications which range from machine learning to medical diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a framework for the segmentation of images based on super-pixels and algorithms for community identification in graphs. The super-pixel pre-segmentation step reduces the number of nodes in the graph, rendering the method the ability to process large images. Moreover, community detection algorithms provide more accurate segmentation than traditional approaches, such as those based on spectral graph partition. We also compare our method with two algorithms: a) the graph-base…

Accurate assessment of Lung nodules is a time consuming and error prone ingredient of the radiologist interpretation work. Automating 3D volume detection and segmentation can improve workflow as well as patient care. Previous works have focused either on detecting lung nodules from a full CT scan or on segmenting them from a small ROI. We adapt the state of the art architecture for 2D object detection and segmentation, MaskRCNN, to handle 3D images and employ it to detect and segment lung nodules from CT scans. We report on competitive results for the lung nodule detection on LUNA16 data set. …
We propose an attention mechanism for 3D medical image segmentation. The method, named segmentation-by-detection, is a cascade of a detection module followed by a segmentation module. The detection module enables a region of interest to come to attention and produces a set of object region candidates which are further used as an attention model. Rather than dealing with the entire volume, the segmentation module distills the information from the potential region. This scheme is an efficient solution for volumetric data as it reduces the influence of the surrounding noise which is especially im…

We propose a data augmentation method that takes advantage of already annotated data multiple times. We propose an augmentation framework that reuses real data, automatically finds suitable placements in the scene to be augmented, and handles occlusions explicitly. Due to the usage of the real data, the scan points of newly inserted objects in augmentation sustain the physical characteristics of the lidar, such as intensity and raydrop. Breast cancer is one of the factors that cause the increase of mortality of women. The most widely used method for diagnosing this geological disease i.e. breast cancer is the ultrasound scan. Several key features such as the smoothness and the texture of the tumor captured through ultrasound scans encode the abnormality of the breast tumors (malignant from benign). However, ultrasound scans are often noisy and include irrelevant parts of the breast that may bias the segmentation of eventual tumors. In this paper, we are going to extract the region of interest ( i.e, bounding boxes of the tumo…
Object detection is a fundamental task in computer vision and has many applications in image processing. This paper proposes a new approach for object detection by applying scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) in an automatic segmentation algorithm. SIFT is an invariant algorithm respect to scale, translation and rotation. The features are very distinct and provide stable keypoints that can be used for matching an object in different images. At first, an object is trained with different aspects for finding best keypoints. The object can be recognized in the other images by using achieved k…
Cell detection and segmentation is fundamental for all downstream analysis of digital pathology images. However, obtaining the pixel-level ground truth for single cell segmentation is extremely labor intensive. To overcome this challenge, we developed an end-to-end deep learning algorithm to perform both single cell detection and segmentation using only point labels. This is achieved through the combination of different task orientated point label encoding methods and a multi-task scheduler for training. We apply and validate our algorithm on PMS2 stained colon rectal cancer and tonsil tissue …
We present an approach for object segmentation in videos that combines frame-level object detection with concepts from object tracking and motion segmentation. The approach extracts temporally consistent object tubes based on an off-the-shelf detector. Besides the class label for each tube, this provides a location prior that is independent of motion. For the final video segmentation, we combine this information with motion cues. The method overcomes the typical problems of weakly supervised/unsupervised video segmentation, such as scenes with no motion, dominant camera motion, and objects tha…

This extension enables anomaly segmentation and improves detection performance. As a result, anomaly detection and segmentation performances measu…

There are many clinical contexts which require accurate detection and segmentation of all focal pathologies (e.g. lesions, tumours) in patient images. In cases where there are a mix of small and large lesions, standard binary cross entropy loss will result in better segmentation of large lesions at the expense of missing small ones. Adjusting the operating point to accurately detect all lesions generally leads to oversegmentation of large lesions. In this work, we propose a novel reweighing strategy to eliminate this performance gap, increasing small pathology detection performance while maint…
