We demonstrate that it is possible to construct operators that stabilize the constraint-satisfying subspaces of computational problems in their Ising representations. We provide an explicit recipe to construct unitaries and associated measurements given a set of constraints. The stabilizer measurements allow the detection of constraint violations, and provide a route to recovery back into the constrained subspace. We call this technique ''quantum subspace correction". As an example, we explicitly investigate the stabilizers using the simplest local constraint subspace: Independent Set. We find an algorithm that is guaranteed to produce a perfect uniform or weighted distribution over all constraint-satisfying states when paired with a stopping condition: a quantum analogue of partial rejection sampling. The stopping condition can be modified for sub-graph approximations. We show that it can prepare exact Gibbs distributions on $d-$regular graphs below a critical hardness $λ_d^*$ in sub-linear time. Finally, we look at a potential use of quantum subspace correction for fault-tolerant depth-reduction. In particular we investigate how the technique detects and recovers errors induced by Trotterization in preparing maximum independent set using an adiabatic state preparation algorithm.

Towards a Unified Framework for Approximate Quantum Error Correction
[H. We describe the contextual subspace variational quantum eigensolver (CS-VQE), a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm for approximating the ground state energy of a Hamiltonian. The approximation to the ground state energy is obtained as the sum of two contributions. The first contribution comes from a noncontextual approximation to the Hamiltonian, and is computed classically. The second contribution is obtained by using the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) technique to compute a contextual correction on a quantum processor. In general the VQE computation of the contextual correction uses f…
The dimension reduction method enables security proofs of quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols that are originally formulated in infinite dimensions via reduction to a tractable finite-dimensional optimization. The reduction of dimensions is associated with a correction term in the secret key rate calculation. The previously derived correction term is loose when the protocol measurements are nearly block-diagonal with respect to the projection onto the reduced finite-dimensional subspace. Here, we provide a tighter correction term. It interpolates between the two extreme cases where all me…
Subspace-Search Variational Quantum Eigen solver (SSVQE) is a searching method of multiple states and relies on the unitarity of transformations to ensure the orthogonality of output states for multiple states. Therefore, this method is thought to be a promising method for quantum chemistry because ordinary Variational Quantum Eigen solver (VQE) can only calculate the excited states step by step from the ground state based on Variational Quantum deflation (VQD). We compare the advantage of VQE, SSVQE with/without the constraint term and/or Tabu search term, which is added by the Lagrange multi…
We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the possibility of achieving the Heisenberg scaling in general adaptive multi-parameter estimation schemes in presence of Markovian noise. In situations where the Heisenberg scaling is achievable, we provide a semidefinite program to identify the optimal quantum error correcting (QEC) protocol that yields the best estimation precision. We overcome the technical challenges associated with potential incompatibility of the measurement optimally extracting information on different parameters by utilizing the Holevo Cramér-Rao (HCR) bound for pure …
The contextual subspace variational quantum eigensolver (CS-VQE) is a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm that approximates the ground-state energy of a given qubit Hamiltonian. It achieves this by separating the Hamiltonian into contextual and noncontextual parts. The ground-state energy is approximated by classically solving the noncontextual problem, followed by solving the contextual problem using VQE, constrained by the noncontextual solution. In general, computation of the contextual correction needs fewer qubits and measurements compared with solving the full Hamiltonian via traditional …
Quantum circuits with local particle number conservation (LPNC) restrict the quantum computation to a subspace of the Hilbert space of the qubit register. In a noiseless or fault-tolerant quantum computation, such quantities are preserved. In the presence of noise, however, the evolution's symmetry could be broken and non-valid states could be sampled at the end of the computation. On the other hand, the restriction to a subspace in the ideal case suggest the possibility of more resource efficient error mitigation techniques for circuits preserving symmetries that are not possible for general …

Leakage outside of the qubit computational subspace poses a threatening challenge to quantum error correction (QEC). We propose a scheme using two leakage-reduction units (LRUs) that mitigate these issues for a transmon-based surface code, without requiring an overhead in terms of hardware or QEC-cycle time as in previous proposals. For data qubits we consider a microwave drive to transfer leakage to the readout resonator, where it quickly decays, ensuring that this negligibly affects the coherence within the computational subspace for realistic system parameters. For ancilla qubits we apply a…
High-Precision Quantum Dynamics of He$_2$ over the b $^3Π_\mathrm{g}$-c $^3Σ_\mathrm{g}^+$ Electronic Subspace by including Non-adiabatic, Relativistic and QED Corrections and Couplings
Population leakage outside the qubit subspace presents a particularly harmful source of error that cannot be handled by standard error correction methods. Using a trapped $^{171}$Yb$+$ ion, we demonstrate an optical pumping scheme to suppress leakage errors in atomic hyperfine qubits. The selection rules and narrow linewidth of a quadrupole transition are used to selectively pump population out of leakage states and back into the qubit subspace. Each pumping cycle reduces the leakage population by a factor of $\sim3$, allowing for an exponential suppression in the number of cycles. We use inte…
The quantum mechanical motion of the atomic nuclei is considered over a single- or a multi-dimensional subspace of electronic states which is separated by a gap from the rest of the electronic spectrum over the relevant range of nuclear configurations. The electron-nucleus Hamiltonian is block-diagonalized up to $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^{n+1})$ through a unitary transformation of the electronic subspace and the corresponding $n$th-order effective Hamiltonian is derived for the quantum nuclear motion. Explicit but general formulae are given for the second- and the third-order corrections. As a …
There is currently a tremendous interest in developing practical applications of NISQ processors without the overhead required by full error correction. Quantum information processing is especially challenging within the gate model, as algorithms quickly lose fidelity as the problem size and circuit depth grow. This has lead to a number of non-gate-model approaches such as analog quantum simulation and quantum annealing. These approaches come with specific hardware requirements that are typically different than that of a universal gate-based quantum computer. We have previously proposed a non-…
One notion of non-locality in quantum theory is the fact that information may be encoded in a composite system in such a way that it is not accessible through local measurements, even with the assistance of classical communication. Thus, contrary to the classical case, there exists information in quantum many body systems which cannot be accessed locally. We show however that, remarkably, two-dimensional subspaces do not have this property: any physically allowed measurement on information encoded in any two-dimensional subspace, regardless of entanglement or multi-partite structure, may be pe…
Quantum coherence plays an important role in quantum information protocols that provide an advantage over classical information processing. The amount of coherence that can exist between two orthogonal subspaces is limited by the positivity constraint on the density matrix. On the level of multipartite systems, this gives rise to what is known as monogamy of entanglement. On the level of single systems this leads to a bound, and hence, a trade-off in coherence that can exist between different orthogonal subspaces. In this work we derive trade-off relations for the amount of coherence that can …
With the rapid developments in quantum hardware comes a push towards the first practical applications on these devices. While fully fault-tolerant quantum computers may still be years away, one may ask if there exist intermediate forms of error correction or mitigation that might enable practical applications before then. In this work, we consider the idea of post-processing error decoders using existing quantum codes, which are capable of mitigating errors on encoded logical qubits using classical post-processing with no complicated syndrome measurements or additional qubits beyond those used…
The rotation of subspaces by a chosen angle is a fundamental quantum computing operation, with applications in error correction and quantum algorithms such as the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm, the Variational Quantum Eigensolver and the quantum singular value transformation. Such rotations are usually implemented at the hardware level via multiple-controlled-phase gates, which lead to large circuit depth when decomposed into one- and two-qubit gates. Here, we propose a fast, high-fidelity way to implement such operations via topological quantum walks, where a sequence of single-q…
We derive an effective equation of motion within the steady-state subspace of a large family of Markovian open systems (i.e., Lindbladians) due to perturbations of their Hamiltonians and system-bath couplings. Under mild and realistic conditions, competing dissipative processes destructively interfere without the need for fine-tuning and produce no dissipation within the steady-state subspace. In quantum error-correction, these effects imply that continuously error-correcting Lindbladians are robust to calibration errors, including miscalibrations consisting of operators undetectable by the co…
We consider a two-dimensional quantum memory of qubits on a torus which encode the extended Fibonaccistring-net code, and devise strategies for error correction when those qubits are subjected to depolarizing noise.Building on the concept of tube algebras, we construct a set of measurements and of quantum gates whichmap arbitrary qubit errors to the string-net subspace and allow for the characterization of the resulting errorsyndrome in terms of doubled Fibonacci anyons. Tensor network techniques then allow to quantitatively studythe action of Pauli noise on the string-net subspace. We perform…
