There is a well-known correspondence between the physics of black hole evaporation and that of moving mirrors in QFT. However, most analyses in this subject rely on prescribed mirror trajectories. Here, we study the flat-space dynamics of $1+1$-dimensional Conformal Field Theories interacting with a relativistic boundary particle of mass $m$ acting as a perfect mirror. The trajectory of the latter is not fixed but follows its own relativistic equation of motion $F^μ=ma^μ$. For given initial conditions at past null infinity, we find the boundary particle's trajectory and the reflected energy-momentum of the quantum fields. For incoming vacuum states, the solution yields mirror orbits that correspond to extremal black holes. For the class of incoming states that produce orbits becoming null in finite proper time -- corresponding to the formation of a horizon -- at the classical level, the quantum backreaction avoids this endpoint rendering the mirror's velocity in lightcone coordinates finite. We investigate the behavior of the Averaged Null Energy Condition, which in this setup reduces to a boundary term.
We compute the effect of quantum mechanical backreaction on the spectrum of radiation in a dynamical moving mirror model, mimicking the effect of a gravitational collapse geometry. Our method is based on the use of a combined WKB and saddle-point approximation to implement energy conservation in the calculation of the Bogolyubov coefficients, in which we assume that the mirror particle has finite mass m. We compute the temperature of the produced radiation as a function of time and find that after a relatively short time, the temperature is reduced by a factor 1/2 relative to the standard resu…
We propose a mechanism of 'beaming' the backreaction of a relativistic source in the bulk of AdS towards the boundary. Using this beaming mechanism to estimate the energy distribution from radiation by a circling quark in strongly coupled field theory, we find remarkable agreement with the previous results of arXiv:1001.3880. Apart from explaining a puzzling feature of these results and elucidating the scale/radius duality in AdS/CFT, our proposal provides a useful computational technique.
Motivated by the puzzles in understanding how Black Holes evaporate into a strongly coupled Conformal Field Theory, we study particle creation by an accelerating mirror. We model the mirror as a gravitating Domain Wall and consider a CFT coupled to it through gravity, in asymptotically Anti de Sitter space. This problem (backreaction included) can be solved exactly at one loop. At strong coupling, this is dual to a Domain Wall localized on the brane in the Karch-Randall model, which can be fully solved as well. Hence, in this case one can see how the particle production is affected by A) stron…
We extend in two directions our recent investigation of strongly interacting quantum fields in a class of spacetimes with chronology horizons (Misner spacetimes). First, we generalize to arbitrary dimensions the holographic mechanism of chronology protection in the absence of gravitational backreaction. The AdS geometry dual to a conformal field theory in these spacetimes shows, in every dimension, an entire separation between the bulk duals of the chronal and non-chronal regions, with the former being complete, regular geometries. In some instances the protection requires the inclusion of non…
We develop a general holographic superconductor away from the probe limit by considering the corrections both in the gravity and in the gauge matter fields. We find the consistent effects of the high curvature correction in the gravity, the nonlinear correction in the gauge matter field and the backreaction on the dynamics of bulk AdS background and boundary CFT. They all have the effect to protect the stability of the bulk spacetime and hinder the formation of the scalar hair condensation on the boundary.
We systematically study moving mirror models in two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). By focusing on their late-time behavior, we separate the mirror profiles into four classes, named type A (timelike) mirrors, type B (escaping) mirrors, type C (chasing) mirrors, and type D (terminated) mirrors. We analytically explore the characteristic features of the energy flux and entanglement entropy for each type and work out their physical interpretation. Moreover, we construct their gravity duals for which end-of-the-world (EOW) branes play a crucial role. Depending on the mirror type, the pro…
Localized bulk excitations in AdS/CFT are produced by operators which modify the pattern of entanglement in the boundary state. We show that simple models--consisting of entanglement swapping operators acting on a qubit system or a free field theory--capture qualitative features of gravitational backreaction and reproduce predictions of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. These entanglement swapping operators naturally admit multiple representations associated with different degrees of freedom, thereby reproducing the code subspace structure emphasized by Almheiri, Dong, and Harlow. We also show that …
Exactly solvable mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau threefolds of hypersurface type exist in the class of Gepner models that include nondiagonal affine invariants. Motivated by the string modular interpretation established previously for models in this class it is natural to ask whether the arithmetic structure of mirror pairs of varieties reflects the fact that as conformal field theories they are isomorphic. Mirror symmetry in particular predicts that the L-functions of the Ω-motives of such pairs are identical. In the present paper this prediction is confirmed by showing that the Ω-motives of exact…
We employ gauge-gravity duality to study the backreaction effect of 4-dimensional large-$N$ quantum field theories on constant-curvature backgrounds, and in particular de Sitter space-time. The field theories considered are holographic QFTs, dual to RG flows between UV and IR CFTs. We compute the holographic QFT contribution to the gravitational effective action for 4d Einstein manifold backgrounds. We find that for a given value of the cosmological constant $λ$, there generically exist two backreacted constant-curvature solutions, as long as $λ< λ_{\textrm{max}} \sim M_p^2 / N^2$, otherwise n…
We present new SO(4)-invariant and non-supersymmetric instanton solutions for the conformally coupled m^2=-2 and massive m^2=+4 (pseudo)scalars arising from a consistent truncation of 11-dimensional supergravity over AdS_4 x S^7/Z_k when the internal space is a S^1 Hopf fibration on CP^3, and we consider backreaction. In fact, the bulk configurations associate with (anti)membranes wrapped around mixed internal (and external) directions, which in turn probe the Wick-rotated or skew-whiffed background, break all supersymmetries as well as parity invariance. From near the boundary behavior of the…
We study Kac-Moody asymptotic symmetries and memory effects in $\text{AdS}_4^{\text{Poincare}}$ gauge theory and (when accompanied by 4D gravity) in its holographic CFT$_3$ dual. While such infinite-dimensional symmetries are absent in standard asymptotic analyses of $\text{AdS}_4$, we show how they arise with alternate AdS boundary conditions. In the 3D holographic description, these alternate boundary conditions correspond to a modified $\widetilde{\text{CFT}}_3$ obtained by Chern-Simons gauging of the CFT$_3$ dual defined by standard boundary conditions, so that Kac-Moody symmetries then fo…
We present a method of removing all infinite sums from the various forms of the mirror TBA equations and the energy formula of the AdS/CFT spectral problem. This new formulation of the TBA system is quasi-local because Y-functions that are connected by the TBA equations are at most next to nearest neighbors with respect to the Y-system diagram of AdS/CFT.
We study a holographic construction of quantum rotating BTZ black holes that incorporates the exact backreaction from strongly coupled quantum conformal fields. It is based on an exact four-dimensional solution for a black hole localized on a brane in AdS$_4$, first discussed some years ago but never fully investigated in this manner. Besides quantum CFT effects and their backreaction, we also investigate the role of higher-curvature corrections in the effective three-dimensional theory. We obtain the quantum-corrected geometry and the renormalized stress tensor. We show that the quantum black…
We study various duality webs involving the 3d FT[SU(N)] theory, a close relative of the T[SU(N)] quiver tail. We first map the partition functions of FT[SU(N)] and its 3d spectral dual to a pair of spectral dual q-Toda conformal blocks. Then we show how to obtain the FT[SU(N)] partition function by Higgsing a 5d linear quiver gauge theory, or equivalently from the refined topological string partition function on a certain toric Calabi-Yau three-fold. 3d spectral duality in this context descends from 5d spectral duality. Finally we discuss the 2d reduction of the 3d spectral dual pair and stud…
Irrelevant operators in a CFT modify the usual Weyl transformation of the metric. A metric beta-function turns on, which modifies the Weyl anomalies as well. In this paper, we study the relation between bulk diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformation at the boundary when a massive scalar field, which sources irrelevant operators at the boundary, is coupled to the bulk metric. Considering the effect of the backreaction generated by the scalar field, we provide a holographic description of the boundary metric beta-function and anomalies. Our results represent an additional test of the AdS/CFT corre…
We consider the Quantum Null Energy Condition (QNEC) for holographic conformal field theories in two spacetime dimensions (CFT$_2$). We show that QNEC saturates for all states dual to vacuum solutions of AdS$_3$ Einstein gravity, including systems that are far from thermal equilibrium. If the Ryu-Takayanagi surface encounters bulk matter QNEC does not need to be saturated, whereby we give both analytical and numerical examples. In particular, for CFT$_2$ with a global quench dual to AdS$_3$-Vaidya geometries we find a curious half-saturation of QNEC for large entangling regions. We also addres…
Using the thermodynamical Bethe ansatz method we derive an infinite set of integral non-linear equations for the spectrum of states/operators in AdS/CFT. The Y-system conjectured in arXiv:0901.3753 for the spectrum of all operators in planar N=4 SYM theory follows from these equations. In particular, we present the integral equations for the spectrum of all operators within the sl(2) sector. We prove that all the kernels and free terms entering these TBA equations are real and have nice fusion properties in the relevant mirror kinematics. We find the analogue of DHM formula for the dressing ke…
We analyze the creation of particles in two dimensions under the action of conformal transformations. We focus our attention on Mobius transformations and compare the usual approach, based on the Bogolubov coefficients, with an alternative but equivalent viewpoint based on correlation functions. In the latter approach the absence of particle production under full Mobius transformations is manifest. Moreover, we give examples, using the moving-mirror analogy, to illustrate the close relation between the production of quanta and energy.
We employ the field theoretic approach to study the quantum noise problem in the mirror-field system, where a perfectly reflecting mirror is illuminated by a single-mode coherent state of the massless scalar field. The associated radiation pressure is described by a surface integral of the stress-tensor of the field. The read-out field is measured by a monople detector, form which the effective distance between the detector and mirror can be obtained. In the slow-motion limit of the mirror, we are able to identify various sources of quantum noise that lead to uncertainty of the read-out measur…
We present significant evidence in favour of the holographic conjecture that ``4D black holes localized on the brane found by solving the classical bulk equations in $AdS_5$ are quantum corrected black holes and not classical ones''. The crucial test is the calculation of the quantum correction to the Newtonian potential based on a numerical computation of $<T^a_b>$ in Schwarzschild spacetime for matter fields in the zero temperature Boulware vacuum state. For the case of the conformally invariant scalar field the leading order term is found to be $M/45πr^3$. This result is equivalent to the r…
We analyze different holographic complexity proposals for black holes that include corrections from bulk quantum fields. The specific setup is the quantum BTZ black hole, which encompasses in an exact manner the effects of conformal fields with large central charge in the presence of the black hole, including the backreaction corrections to the BTZ metric. Our results show that Volume Complexity admits a consistent quantum expansion and correctly reproduces known limits. On the other hand, the generalized Action Complexity picks up large contributions from the singularity, which is modified du…
In analyzing the nature of thermal radiance experienced by an accelerated observer (Unruh effect), an eternal black hole (Hawking effect) and in certain types of cosmological expansion, one of us proposed a unifying viewpoint that these can be understood as arising from the vacuum fluctuations of the quantum field being subjected to an exponential scale transformation. This viewpoint, together with our recently developed stochastic theory of particle-field interaction understood as quantum open systems described by the influence functional formalism, can be used to address situations where the…
Understanding the entanglement of radiation in QFT has been a long standing challenge, with implications ranging from black hole thermodynamics to quantum information. We demonstrate how the case of the free fermion in $1 + 1$ dimensions reveals the details of the density matrix of the radiation produced by a moving mirror. Using the resolvent method rather than standard CFT techniques we derive the Rényi entropies, modular Hamiltonian and flow of the radiation, and determine when mirrors generate unitary transformations.
We study the quantum-mechanical corrections to two point particles accelerated by a strut in a 2+1 D flat background. Since the particles are accelerating, we use finite temperature techniques to compute the Green's function of a conformally coupled scalar applying transparent and Dirichlet boundary conditions at the location of the strut. We find that the induced energy-momentum tensor diverges at the position of the strut unless we impose transparent boundary conditions. Further, we use the regular form of the induced energy-momentum tensor to calculate the gravitational backreaction on the …
Moving from the mirror theory Bethe-Yang equations proposed by Arutyunov and Frolov, we derive the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations which should control the spectrum of the planar $\text{AdS}_5/\text{CFT}_4$ correspondence. The associated set of universal functional relations (Y-system) satisfied by the exponentials of the TBA pseudoenergies is deduced, confirming the structure inferred by Gromov, Kazakov and Vieira.
A big open problem in $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ holographic duality is to compute the CFT data of the dual theory. In this direction recently it was introduced the hexagonalization framework in the $AdS_3$ context. It allows the computation of the structure constants of the CFT$_2$ dual in the planar limit non-perturbatively, however in this proposal it was introduced only the asymptotic part of the hexagon valid for correlators with asymptotically large bridge lengths. In this work we complete this picture by computing the so called mirror corrections that allow to describe structure cons…
We study a quantum model of dynamical Casimir effect in an optical cavity enclosed by a freely moving mirror attached to a harmonic spring. The quantum fluctuations of the friction force exerted by the dynamical Casimir emission onto the moving mirror are investigated, as well as their consequences on the quantum state of the mirror oscillation. Observable signatures of the interplay of the nonlinear nature of the effective mirror-cavity coupling and of the discreteness of the emitted photons are pointed out, in particular as a fast diffusion of the mirror oscillation phase. These results are …
Constructing an exact correspondence between a black hole model, formed from the most simple solution of Einstein's equations, and a particular moving mirror trajectory, we investigate a new model that preserves unitarity. The Bogoliubov coefficients in 1+1 dimensions are computed analytically. The key modification limits the origin of coordinates (moving mirror) to sub-light asymptotic speed. Effective continuity across the metric ensures that there is no information loss. The black hole emits thermal radiation and the total evaporation energy emitted is finite without backreaction, consisten…
From a consistent Kaluza-Klein truncation of 11-dimensional supergravity over AdS_4 x CP^3 x S^1/Z_k, with a general 4-form ansatz, we arrive at a set of equations and solutions for the included fields. In particular, we have a bulk equation for a self-interacting (pseudo)scalar with arbitrary mass. By computing the energy-momentum tensors of the associated Einstein equations, to include the backreaction, and setting them to zero, we solve the resulting equations with the bulk one and get solutions corresponding to marginal and marginally relevant deformations of the boundary CFT_3, which brea…
We use holography to examine the response of interacting quantum fields to the appearance of closed timelike curves in a dynamically evolving background that initially does not contain them. For this purpose, we study a family of two-dimensional spacetimes that model very broad classes of wormhole time machines. The behavior of strongly coupled conformal theories in these spacetimes is then holographically described by three-dimensional AdS bulk geometries that we explicitly construct. The dual bulk spacetime is free from any divergences, but splits into two disconnected components, without an…
We argue that the region behind the horizon of a one-sided black hole can be probed by an analogue of the double-trace deformation protocol of Gao-Jafferis-Wall. This is achieved via a deformation of the CFT Hamiltonian by a term of the form ${\cal O} \widetilde{\cal O}$, where $\widetilde{\cal O}$ denote the state-dependent "mirror operators". We argue that this deformation creates negative energy shockwaves in the bulk, which allow particles inside the horizon to escape and to get directly detected in the CFT. This provides evidence for the smoothness of the horizon of black holes dual to ty…
We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study a thermally isolated conformal field theory in four dimensions which undergoes a repeated deformation by an external periodic time-dependent source coupled to an operator of dimension Delta. The initial state of the theory is taken to be at a finite temperature. We compute the energy dissipated in the system as a function of the frequency and of the dimension Delta of the perturbing operator. This is done in the linear response regime. In order to study the details of thermalization in the dual field theory, the leading-order backreaction on the AdS b…
We study (0,2) deformations of N=2 Liouville field theory and its mirror duality. A gauged linear sigma model construction of the ultraviolet theory connects (0,2) deformations of Liouville field theory and (0,2) deformations of N=2 SL(2,R)/U(1) coset model as a mirror duality. Our duality proposal from the gauged linear sigma model completely agrees with the exact CFT analysis. In the context of heterotic string compactifications, the deformation corresponds to the introduction of a non-trivial gauge bundle. This non-compact Landau-Ginzburg construction yields a novel way to study the gauge b…
Recently a certain conceptual puzzle in the AdS/CFT correspondence, concerning the growth of quantum circuit complexity and the wormhole volume, has been identified by Bouland-Fefferman-Vazirani and Susskind. In this note, we propose a resolution of the puzzle and save the quantum Extended Church-Turing thesis by arguing that there is no computational shortcut in measuring the volume due to gravitational backreaction from bulk observers. A certain strengthening of the firewall puzzle from the computational complexity perspective, as well as its potential resolution, is also presented.
We analytically as well as numerically study the properties of one-dimensional holographic p- wave superconductors in the presence of backreaction. We employ the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem for the analytical calculation and the shooting method for the numerical investigations. We apply the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence and determine the relation between the critical temperature Tc and the chemical potential μfor different values of mass m of charged spin-1 field and backreacting parameters. We observe that the data of both analytical and numerical studies are in good agreement. We find out …
In this paper we present a model for the kinematics and dynamics of optomechanics which describe the coupling between an optical field, here modeled by a massless scalar field, and the internal (e.g., determining its reflectivity) and mechanical (e.g., displacement) degrees of freedom of a moveable mirror. As opposed to implementing boundary conditions on the field we highlight the internal dynamics of the mirror which provides added flexibility to describe a variety of setups relevant to current experiments. The inclusion of the internal degrees of freedom in this model allows for a variety o…
We study D-brane instantons in systems of D3-branes at toric CY 3-fold singularities. The instanton effect can be described as a backreaction modifying the geometry of the mirror configuration, in which the breaking of $U(1)$ symmetries by the instanton translates into the recombination of gauge D-branes, which also directly generates the instanton-induced charged field theory operator. In this paper we describe the D-brane instanton backreaction in terms of a combinatorial operation in the bipartite dimer diagram of the original theory. Interestingly, the resulting theory is a general Biparti…
We investigate the thermodynamics of hairy black holes in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, including backreaction. Resorting to the Euclidean path integral approach, we show that matter conformally coupled to Einstein gravity in five dimensions may exhibit a phase transition whose endpoint turns out to be a hairy black hole in AdS5 space. The scalar field configuration happens to be regular everywhere outside and on the horizon, and behaves asymptotically in such a way that respects the AdS boundary conditions that are relevant for AdS/CFT. The theory presents other peculiar features…
We propose a new and simple method of estimating the radiation due to an accelerated quark in a strongly coupled medium, within the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In particular, we offer a heuristic explanation of the collimated nature of synchrotron radiation produced by a circling quark, which was recently studied in Phys.Rev.D81 (2010) 126001. The gravitational dual of such quark is a coiling string in AdS, whose backreaction on the spacetime geometry remains tightly confined, as if 'beamed' towards the boundary. While this appears to contradict conventional expectations from the …
The bulk reconstruction program aims to obtain representations of bulk fields as operators in the boundary CFT. In this paper we extend the program by obtaining the boundary representation for a scalar field in a rotating BTZ black hole. We find that the representation of the field near the inner horizon shows novel features. We also obtain a representation for fields inside the horizon as operators in a single boundary CFT using mirror operator construction.
We investigate the possibility that the geometry dual to a typical AdS black hole microstate corresponds to the extended AdS-Schwarzschild geometry, including a region spacelike to the exterior. We argue that this region can be described by the mirror operators, a set of state-dependent operators in the dual CFT. We probe the geometry of a typical state by considering state-dependent deformations of the CFT Hamiltonian, which have an interpretation as a one-sided analogue of the Gao-Jafferis-Wall traversable wormhole protocol for typical states. We argue that the validity of the conjectured bu…
We explore the Hawking evaporation of two-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS$_2$), dilatonic black hole coupled with conformal matter, and derive the Page curve for the entanglement entropy of radiation. We first work in a semiclassical approximation with backreaction. We show that the end-point of the evaporation process is AdS$_2$ with a vanishing dilaton, i.e. a regular, singularity-free, zero-entropy state. We explicitly compute the entanglement entropies of the black hole and the radiation, as functions of the horizon radius, using the conformal field theory (CFT) dual to AdS$_2$ gravity. We…
We present a first-principles CFT calculation corresponding to the spherical collapse of a shell of matter in three dimensional quantum gravity. In field theory terms, we describe the equilibration process, from early times to thermalization, of a CFT following a sudden injection of energy at time t=0. By formulating a continuum version of Zamolodchikov's monodromy method to calculate conformal blocks at large central charge c, we give a framework to compute a general class of probe observables in the collapse state, incorporating the full backreaction of matter fields on the dual geometry. Th…
We consider the backreaction of the winding condensate on the cigar background. We focus on the case of the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})_k/U(1)$ cigar associated with, e.g., the near-horizon limit of $k$ NS5 black-branes. We solve the equations of motion numerically in the large $k$ limit as a function of the amplitude, $A$, of the winding mode at infinity. We find that there is a critical amplitude, $A_c=\exp(-γ/2)$, that admits a critical solution. In string theory, the exact $SL(2,\mathbb{R})_k/U(1)$ cigar CFT fixes completely the winding amplitude, $A_s$, at infinity. We find that in the large $k$ li…
