Motivated by the puzzles in understanding how Black Holes evaporate into a strongly coupled Conformal Field Theory, we study particle creation by an accelerating mirror. We model the mirror as a gravitating Domain Wall and consider a CFT coupled to it through gravity, in asymptotically Anti de Sitter space. This problem (backreaction included) can be solved exactly at one loop. At strong coupling, this is dual to a Domain Wall localized on the brane in the Karch-Randall model, which can be fully solved as well. Hence, in this case one can see how the particle production is affected by A) strong coupling and B) its own backreaction. We find that A) the amount of CFT radiation at strong coupling is not suppressed relative to the weak coupling result; and B) once the boundary conditions in the AdS_5 bulk are appropriately mapped to the conditions for the CFT on the boundary of AdS_4, the Karch-Randall model and the CFT side agree to leading order in the backreaction. This agreement holds even for a new class of self-consistent solutions (the `Bootstrap' Domain Wall spacetimes) that have no classical limit. This provides a quite precise check of the holographic interpretation of the Karch-Randall model. We also comment on the massive gravity interpretation.
As a byproduct, we show that relativistic Cosmic Strings (pure tension codimension 2 branes) in Anti de Sitter are repulsive and generate long-range tidal forces even at classical level. This is the phenomenon dual to particle production by Domain Walls.
In a braneworld context, the radion is a massless mode coupling to the trace of the matter stress tensor. Since the radion also governs the separation between branes, it is expected to decouple from the physical spectrum in single brane scenarios, such as the one-brane Randall-Sundrum model. However, contrary to expectations, we demonstrate that the Karch-Randall radion always remains as a physical excitation, even in the single brane case. Here, the radion measures the distance not between branes, but rather between the brane and the anti-de Sitter boundary on the other side of the bulk.
To investigate the holography in the Karch-Randall (KR) braneworld model, we construct time-symmetric initial data of black holes floating in the bulk, and compare it with its holographic dual, which is described by four-dimensional self-gravitating quantum field theory in asymptotically AdS_4 spacetime. We also give a definition and an explicit formula of mass in the KR model extending the definition by Abbott and Deser for asymptotically AdS spacetime. We obtain supporting evidence for the holography in the KR model such as good agreements of phase structures and characteristic values betwee…
In this paper, we propose a model based on wedge holography that can describe the multiverse. In wedge holography, we consider two gravitating baths, one of which has strong gravity and the other one has weak gravity. To describe a multiverse, we consider $2n$ Karch-Randall branes, and we propose that various $d$-dimensional universes are localized on these branes. These branes are embedded in $(d+1)$-dimensional spacetime. The model is useful in obtaining the Page curve of black holes with multiple horizons and in the resolution of the ``grandfather paradox''. We explicitly obtain the Page cu…
In this letter, we show that Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity can be naturally realized in the Karch-Randall braneworld. Notably the role of the dilaton in JT gravity is played by the radion in a suitably orbifolded version of the setup. In the classical entanglement entropy calculation, there is an apparent degeneracy of Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces. We demonstrate how quantum fluctuations of the radion/dilaton resolves this would-be classical puzzle regarding entanglement wedge reconstruction.
We argue that the Karch-Randall compactification is holographically dual to a 4-d conformal field theory coupled to gravity on Anti de Sitter space. Using this interpretation we recover the mass spectrum of the model. In particular, we find no massless spin-2 states. By giving a purely 4-d interpretation to the compactification we make clear that it represents the first example of a local 4-d field theory in which general covariance does not imply the existence of a massless graviton. We also discuss some variations of the Karch-Randall model discussed in the literature, and we examine whether…
We present a linearized gravity investigation of the bent braneworld, where an AdS_4 brane is embedded in AdS_5. While we focus on static spherically symmetric mass distributions on the brane, much of the analysis continues to hold for more general configurations. In addition to the identification of the massive Karch-Randall graviton and a tower of Kaluza-Klein gravitons, we find a radion mode that couples to the trace of the energy-momentum tensor on the brane. The Karch-Randall radion arises as a property of the embedding of the brane in the bulk space, even in the context of a single brane…
We present a linearized treatment of the Karch-Randall braneworld where an AdS_4 or dS_4 brane is embedded in AdS_5. We examine the quasi-zero graviton mode in detail and reproduce the graviton mass by elementary means for the AdS_5 case. We also determine the axially symmetric, static excitations of the vacuum and demonstrate that they reproduce the 4D AdS_4 and dS_4 Schwarzschild metrics on the brane.
We perform a one-loop test of the holographic interpretation of the Karch-Randall model, whereby a massive graviton appears on an AdS_4 brane in an AdS_5 bulk. Within the AdS/CFT framework, we examine the quantum corrections to the graviton propagator on the brane, and demonstrate that they induce a graviton mass in exact agreement with the Karch-Randall result. Interestingly enough, at one loop order, the spin 0, spin 1/2 and spin 1 loops contribute to the dynamically generated (mass)^2 in the same 1: 3: 12 ratio as enters the Weyl anomaly and the 1/r^3 corrections to the Newtonian gravitatio…
In this paper, we use the Karch-Randall braneworld to study theories of quantum gravity in two dimensional (nearly) anti-de Sitter space (AdS$_2$). We focus on effective gravitational theories in the setup with two Karch-Randall branes embedded in an asymptotically AdS$_3$ bulk forming a wedge. We find the appearance of two-dimensional Einstein-Hilbert gravity (or the Lorenzian version of Marolf-Maxfield theory) when the branes are rigid but the emergence of a class of dilaton gravity models parameterized by the tensions of the two branes when brane fluctuations are accounted for. A special ca…
We obtain the reflected entropy for bipartite mixed state configurations of two adjacent and disjoint intervals at a finite temperature in $BCFT_2$s with two distinct boundaries through a replica technique in the large central charge limit. Subsequently these field theory results are reproduced from bulk computations involving the entanglement wedge cross section in the dual BTZ black hole geometry truncated by two Karch-Randall branes. Our result confirms the holographic duality between the reflected entropy and the bulk entanglement wedge cross section in the context of the $AdS_3/BCFT_2$ sc…
We show how the $T^2$ deformation of large $N$, holographic conformal field theories arise from coupling them to the quadratic mass term of ghost-free massive gravity. We then show that in a certain approximation, the equations arising from the variation of the background frame field are those of the Randall--Sundrum II scenario.
We define the 7D Randall-Sundrum (RS) background and construct the corresponding 6D theory via AdS/CFT duality. In simple approximations, the Friedmann equation derived from 7D RS cosmology and the brane view-point results exactly match. Possible cosmologies on the bulk side are also outlined.
Doubly-holographic models, also known as Karch-Randall brane worlds, have shown to be very useful for understanding recent developments around computing entropies in semi-classical gravity coupled to conformal matter. Although there cannot be a faithful bulk/brane dictionary, we show that there is a simple dictionary which relates brane fields to subleading coefficients of a near-brane expansion of bulk fields -- similar to the case of AdS/CFT. We use this dictionary to find a general formula for the leading order contribution to graviton masses in the $d$ dimensional Karch-Randall braneworld.
We discuss the cosmological implications and the holographic dual theory of the 7D Randall-Sundrum (RS) gravitational set-up. Adding generic matter in the bulk on the 7D gravity side we study the cosmological evolution inferred by the non vanishing value of the brane-bulk energy exchange parameter. This analysis is achieved in detail for specific assumptions on the internal space evolution, including analytical considerations and numerical results. The dual theory is then constructed, making use of the holographic renormalization procedure. The resulting renormalized 6D CFT is anomalous and co…
The five-dimensional description of generalized Randall-Sundrum cosmology is mapped via holography to a generalization of the Starobinsky model. This provides a holographic dual description of the cosmological brane-bulk energy exchange processes studied previously. Some simple solutions are presented in four dimensions.
The cutoff version of the AdS/CFT correspondence states that the Randall Sundrum scenario is dual to a Conformal Field Theory (CFT) coupled to gravity in four dimensions. The gravitational field produced by relativistic domain walls can be exactly solved in both sides of the correspondence, and thus provides one further check of it. We show in the two sides that for the most symmetric case, the wall motion does not lead to particle production of the CFT fields. Still, there are nontrivial effects. Due to the trace anomaly, the CFT effectively renormalizes the domain wall tension. On the five d…
We construct the holographic dual theory of unparticles. The Randall-Sundrum type hard wall model is shown to produce deconstructing particles, whose spectrum has a finite mass gap proportional to the inverse of the fifth direction segment. The introduction of new scale corresponds to setting a brane in ${\rm AdS}_5$. The broken conformal symmetry due to this brane is restored when it is moved to infinity. Unparticles then emerge as an infinite tower of massless particles.
Holography gives us a tool to view the Hawking effect from a new, classical perspective. In the context of Randall-Sundrum braneworld models, we show that the basic features of four-dimensional evaporating solutions are nicely translated into classical five-dimensional language. This includes the dual bulk description of particles tunneling through the horizon.
We investigate the signatures of Fermi liquid formation in the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory coupled to fundamental hypermultiplet at nonvanishing chemical potential for the global U(1) vector symmetry. At strong 't Hooft coupling the system can be analyzed in terms of the D7 brane dynamics in AdS_5 x S^5 background. The phases with vanishing and finite charge density are separated at zero temperature by a quantum phase transition. In case of vanishing hypermultiplet mass, Karch, Son and Starinets discovered a gapless excitation whose speed equals the speed of sound. We find that this zero sound…
We study a gauge theory in a 5D warped space via the dimensional deconstruction that a higher dimensional gauge theory is constructed from a moose of 4D gauge groups. By the AdS/CFT correspondence, a 5D warped gauge theory is dual to a 4D conformal field theory (CFT) with a global symmetry. As far as physics of the gauge theory, we obtain the one-to-one correspondence between each component of a moose of gauge groups and that of a CFT. We formulate a supersymmetric extension of deconstruction and explore the framework of natural supersymmetry in a 5D warped space -- the supersymmetric Randall-…
This thesis is devoted to studying two important aspects of braneworld physics: their cosmology and their holography. We examine the Einstein equations induced on a general $(n-2)$-brane of arbitrary tension, embedded in some $n$-dimensional bulk. The brane energy-momentum tensor enters these equations both linearly and quadratically. From the point of view of a homogeneous and isotropic brane we see quadratic deviations from the FRW equations of the standard cosmology. There is also a contribution from a bulk Weyl tensor. We study this in detail when the bulk is AdS-Schwarzschild or Reissner-…
