This paper is focused on the Monotonicity Principle (MP) for nonlinear materials with piecewise growth exponent. This results are relevant because enables the use of a fast imaging method based on MP, to the wide class of problems with two or more materials, where at least one is nonlinear.
The treatment is very general and allows to model a wide variety of practical configurations such as, for instance, Superconducting (SC) or Perfect Electrical Conducting (PEC) or Perfect Electrical Insulating (PEI) materials.
A key role is played by the average Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator, introduced in [Corbo Esposito et. al, Inverse Problems 2021], where the MP for a single type of nonlinearity was treated.
Realistic numerical examples confirm the theoretical findings.
This work presents a new constructive uniqueness proof for Calderón's inverse problem of electrical impedance tomography, subject to local Cauchy data, for a large class of piecewise constant conductivities that we call "piecewise constant layered conductivities" (PCLC). The resulting reconstruction method only relies on the physically intuitive monotonicity principles of the local Neumann-to-Dirichlet map, and therefore the method lends itself well to efficient numerical implementation and generalization to electrode models. Several direct reconstruction methods exist for the related problem …
In this short note, we investigate simultaneous recovery inverse problems for semilinear elliptic equations with partial data. The main technique is based on higher order linearization and monotonicity approaches. With these methods at hand, we can determine the diffusion, cavity and coefficients simultaneously by knowing the corresponding localized Dirichlet-Neumann operators.
We prove comparison principles for nonlinear potential theories in euclidian spaces in a very straightforward manner from duality and monotonicity. We shall also show how to deduce comparison principles for nonlinear differential operators, a program seemingly different from the first. However, we shall marry these two points of view, for a wide variety of equations, under something called the correspondence principle. In potential theory one is given a constraint set F on the 2-jets of a function, and the boundary of F gives a differential equation. There are many differential operators, suit…
In this paper, we develop a sliding method for the fractional Laplacian. We first obtain the key ingredients needed in the sliding method either in a bounded domain or in the whole space, such as narrow region principles and maximum principles in unbounded domains. Then using semi-linear equations involving the fractional Laplacian in both bounded domains and in the whole space, we illustrate how this new sliding method can be employed to obtain monotonicity of solutions. Some new ideas are introduced. Among which, one is to use Poisson integral representation of $s$-subharmonic functions in d…

The monotonicity-based approach has become one of the fundamental methods for reconstructing inclusions in the inverse problem of electrical impedance tomography. Thus far the method has not been proven to be able to handle extreme inclusions that correspond to some parts of the studied domain becoming either perfectly conducting or perfectly insulating. The main obstacle has arguably been establishing suitable monotonicity principles for the corresponding Neumann-to-Dirichlet boundary maps. In this work, we tackle this shortcoming by first giving a convergence result in the operator norm for …
We consider inverse problems for $p$-Laplace type equations under monotonicity assumptions. In two dimensions, we show that any two conductivities satisfying $σ_1 \geq σ_2$ and having the same nonlinear Dirichlet-to-Neumann map must be identical. The proof is based on a monotonicity inequality and the unique continuation principle for $p$-Laplace type equations. In higher dimensions, where unique continuation is not known, we obtain a similar result for conductivities close to constant.
We construct viscosity solutions to the nonlinear evolution equation \eqref{p} below which generalizes the motion of level sets by mean curvature (the latter corresponds to the case $p = 1$) using the regularization scheme as in \cite{ES1} and \cite{SZ}. The pointwise properties of such solutions, namely the comparison principles, convergence of solutions as $p\to 1$, large-time behavior and unweighted energy monotonicity are studied. We also prove a notable monotonicity formula for the weighted energy, thus generalizing Struwe's famous monotonicity formula for the heat equation ($p =2$).
We prove a weak comparison principle in narrow unbounded domains for solutions to $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in the case $2<p< 3$ and $f(\cdot)$ is a power-type nonlinearity, or in the case $p>2$ and $f(\cdot)$ is super-linear. We exploit it to prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in half spaces (with zero Dirichlet assumption) and therefore to prove some Liouville-type theorems.
We advance a variational method to prove qualitative properties such as symmetries, monotonicity, upper and lower bounds, sign properties, and comparison principles for a large class of doubly-nonlinear evolutionary problems including gradient flows, some nonlocal problems, and systems of nonlinear parabolic equations. Our method is based on the so-called Weighted-Energy-Dissipation (WED) variational approach. This consists in defining a global parameter-dependent functional over entire trajectories and proving that its minimizers converge to solutions to the target problem as the parameter go…
This paper is concerned about maximum principles and radial symmetry for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear partial differential equations. We obtain the radial symmetry and monotonicity properties for nonnegative viscosity solutions of begin{equation}F (D^2 u)+u^p=0 \quad \quad \mbox{in}\ \mathbb R^n \label{abs}\end{equation} under the asymptotic decay rate $u=o(|x|^{-\frac{2}{p-1}})$ at infinity, where $p>1$ (Theorem 1, Corollary 1). As a consequence of our symmetry results, we obtain the nonexistence of any nontrivial and nonnegative solution when $F$ is the Pucci extremal operators (Co…
We consider a quasilinear elliptic equation involving a first order term, under zero Dirichlet boundary condition in half spaces. We prove that any positive solution is monotone increasing w.r.t. the direction orthogonal to the boundary. The main ingredient in the proof is a new comparison principle in unbounded domains. As a consequence of our analysis, we also obtain some new Liouville type theorems.

We consider degenerated nonlinear PDE of elliptic type: $$ - \mathrm{div}(a(|x|)|\nabla w(x)|^{p-2} \nabla w(x)) + h(|x|,w(x),\langle\nabla w(x),\frac{x}{|x|}\rangle)=ϕ(w(x)), $$ where $x$ belongs to the ball in $\bf{R}^n$. Using the argument based on Opial-type inequalities, we investigate qualitative properties of their radial solutions, like e.g. maximum principles, monotonicity, as well as nonexistence of the nontrivial solutions.
In this paper, we consider the following non-linear equations in unbounded domains $Ω$ with exterior Dirichlet condition: \begin{equation*}\begin{cases} (-Δ)_p^s u(x)=f(u(x)), & x\inΩ,\\ u(x)>0, &x\inΩ,\\ u(x)\leq0, &x\in \mathbb{R}^n\setminus Ω, \end{cases}\end{equation*} where $(-Δ)_p^s$ is the fractional p-Laplacian defined as \begin{equation} (-Δ)_p^s u(x)=C_{n,s,p}P.V.\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\frac{|u(x)-u(y)|^{p-2}[u(x)-u(y)]}{|x-y|^{n+s p}}dy \label{0} \end{equation} with $0<s<1$ and $p\geq 2$. We first establish a maximum principle in unbounded domains involving the fractional p-Laplacian by…
We consider Liouville-type and partial regularity results for the nonlinear fourth-order problem $$ Δ^2 u=|u|^{p-1}u\ \{in} \ \R^n,$$ where $ p>1$ and $n\ge1$. We give a complete classification of stable and finite Morse index solutions (whether positive or sign changing), in the full exponent range. We also compute an upper bound of the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set of extremal solutions. Our approach is motivated by Fleming's tangent cone analysis technique for minimal surfaces and Federer's dimension reduction principle in partial regularity theory. A key tool is the monotonicity …
In this article we first derive some sufficient conditions to establish the monotonicity and comparison principles of the semi-flow generated by non-densely defined Cauchy problems. We apply our results to a class of age structured population models. As a consequence we obtain a monotone semi-flow theory and some comparison principles for age structured models.
We introduce a monotonicity-based method for studying input-to-state stability (ISS) of nonlinear parabolic equations with boundary inputs. We first show that a monotone control system is ISS if and only if it is ISS w.r.t. constant inputs. Then we show by means of classical maximum principles that nonlinear parabolic equations with boundary disturbances are monotone control systems. With these two facts, we establish that ISS of the original nonlinear parabolic PDE with constant \textit{boundary disturbances} is equivalent to ISS of a closely related nonlinear parabolic PDE with constant \tex…
