In 2017, Garunkštis, Laurinčikas and Macaitienė proved the discrete universality theorem for the Riemann zeta-function sifted by the nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta-function. This discrete universality has been extended in various zeta-functions and $L$-functions. In this paper, we generalize this discrete universality for Matsumoto zeta-functions.
We establish the universality theorem for the first four symmetric power L-functions of automorphic forms and their associated Rankin-Selberg L-functions. This generalizes some results of Laurincikas & Matsumoto and Matsumoto respectively.
We treat desingularized multiple zeta-functions introduced by Furusho, Komori, Matsumoto and Tsumura. In this paper, we prove functional relations, which are shuffle type product formulae, between desingularized multiple zeta-functions and desingularized values.
We present the most general at this moment results on the discrete mixed joint value-distribution and the universality property for the class of Matsumoto zeta-functions and periodic Hurwitz zeta-functions under certain linear independence condition on the relevant parameters, such as common differences of arithmetic progressions, prime numbers etc.
We give a new type of mixed discrete joint universality properties, which is satisfied by a wide class of zeta-functions. We study the universality for a certain modification of a Matsumoto zeta-function and a periodic Hurwitz zeta-function under certain arithmetic condition on the common difference of arithmetical progression and the shifting parameter. Also we generalize a known discrete universality result in our former paper and the new one as well.
We show the recurrence relations of the Euler-Zagier multiple zeta-function which describes the $r$-fold function with one variable specialized to a non-positive integer as a rational linear combination of $(r-1)$-fold functions, which extends the previous results of Akiyama-Egami-Tanigawa and Matsumoto. As an application, we obtain an explicit method to calculate the special values of the multiple zeta-function at any integer point (the arguments could be neither all-positive nor all-non-positive) as a rational linear summation of the multiple zeta values.
We prove a mixed joint discrete universality theorem for a Matsumoto zeta-function $φ(s)$ (belonging to the Steuding subclass) and a periodic Hurwitz zeta-function $ζ(s,α;{\mathfrak{B}})$. For this purpose, certain independence condition for the parameter $α$ and the minimal step of discrete shifts of these functions is assumed. This paper is a continuation of authors' works [12] and [arXiv:1601.03795].
The property of zeta-functions on mixed joint universality in the Voronin's sense states that any two holomorphic functions can be approximated simultaneously with accuracy $ε>0$ by suitable vertical shifts of the pair consisting from the Riemann zeta- and Hurwitz zeta-functions. In [1], it was shown rather general result, i.e., an approximating pair was composed of the Matsumoto zeta-functions' class and the periodic Hurwitz zeta-function. In this paper, we prove that this set of shifts has a strict positive density for all but at most countably many $ε>0$. Also, we give the concluding remark…
We survey the results and the methods in the theory of universality for various zeta and $L$-functions, obtained in these forty years after the first discovery of the universality for the Riemann zeta-function by Voronin.
This paper pursues positive characteristic analogues of the results of Furusho, Komori, Matsumoto and Tsumura on $p$-adic multiple $L$-functions. We consider $\infty$-adic and $v$-adic multiple zeta functions concerned by Anglès, Ngo Dac and Tavares Ribeiro. Our main results in this paper consist of: (1) integral expressions of special values of $\infty$-adic multiple zeta functions, (2) integral expression of $v$-adic multiple zeta functions themselves similar to those of $p$-adic multiple $L$-functions, (3) Kummer-type congruence for the special values of $v$-adic multiple zeta functions at …
Two remarks related with the mixed joint universality for a polynomial Euler product and a periodic Hurwitz zeta-function with a transcendental parameter are given. One is the mixed joint functional independence, and the other is a generalized universality, which includes several periodic Hurwitz zeta-functions.
In this paper, we prove the universality theorem for the iterated integrals of the logarithm of the Riemann zeta-function on some line parallel to the real axis.
We prove a new case of mixed discrete joint universality theorem on approximation of certain target couple of analytic functions by the shifts of a pair consisting of the function belonging to wide class of Matsumoto zeta-functions and the periodic Hurwitz zeta-function. We work under the condition that the common difference of arithmetical progression satisfies a certain rational condition and the parameter is a transcendental number. The essential difference from the result in our previous article is that here we do not study the class of partial zeta-functions, but work with the class of th…
It is known that there are infinitely many singularities of multiple zeta functions and the special values at non-positive integer points are indeterminate. In order to give a suitable rigorous meaning of the special values there, Furusho, Komori, Matsumoto and Tsumura introduced desingularized values by using their desingularization method to resolve all singularities. On the other hand, Ebrahimi-Fard, Manchon and Singer introduced renormalized values by the renormalization method à la Connes and Kreimer and they showed that the values fulfill the shuffle-type product formula. In this paper, …
For $0<α, λ\leq 1$, the Lerch zeta-function is defined by $L(s;α, λ)$$:= \sum_{n=0}^\infty e^{2πiλn} (n+α)^{-s}$, where $σ>1$. In this paper, we prove joint universality for Lerch zeta-functions with distinct $λ_1,\ldots,λ_m$ and transcendental $α$.
A failed attempt to prove the universality of Lerch zeta function $L(λ,α,s)$ when $λ$ is irrational and $α$ is rational, and for any $λ$ when $α$ is irrational algebraic.
We study analytic properties of the pair consisting of a rather general form of zeta-function with an Euler product and a periodic Hurwitz zeta-function with a transcendental parameter. We first survey briefly previous results, and then investigate the mixed joint discrete value distribution and prove the mixed joint discrete universality theorem for these functions, in the case when common differences of relevant arithmetic progressions are not necessarily the same. Also some generalizations are given. For this purpose, certain arithmetic conditions on the common differences are necessary.
It is known that the special values of multiple zeta functions at non-positive arguments are indeterminate in most cases due to the occurrences of infinitely many singularities. In order to give a suitable rigorous meaning of the special values there, Furusho, Komori, Matsumoto and Tsumura introduced the desingularized values by the desingularization method to resolve all singularities. While, Ebrahimi-Fard, Manchon and Singer introduced the renormalized values to keep the "shuffle" relation by the renormalization procedure à la Connes and Kreimer. In this paper, we reveal an equivalence, that…
Recently, Garunkštis, Laurinčikas, Matsumoto, J. & R. Steuding showed an effective universality-type theorem for the Riemann zeta-function by using an effective multi-dimensional denseness result of Voronin. We will generalize Voronin's effective result and their theorem to the elements of the Selberg class satisfying some conditions.
We investigate the distribution of the Riemann zeta-function on the line $\Re(s)=σ$. For $\tfrac 12 < σ\le 1$ we obtain an upper bound on the discrepancy between the distribution of $ζ(s)$ and that of its random model, improving results of Harman and Matsumoto. Additionally, we examine the distribution of the extreme values of $ζ(s)$ inside of the critical strip, strengthening a previous result of the first author. As an application of these results we obtain the first effective error term for the number of solutions to $ζ(s) = a$ in a strip $\tfrac12 < σ_1 < σ_2 < 1$. Previously in the strip …
In this note we shall study the Witten multiple zeta function associated to the Lie algebra so(5) defined by Matsumoto. Our main result shows that its special values at nonnegative integers are always expressible by alternating Euler sums. More precisely, every such special value of weight w>2 is a finite rational linear combination of alternating Euler sums of weight w and depth at most two, except when the only nonzero argument is one of the two last variables in which case $ζ(w-1)$ is needed.
Let $0<r<1/4$, and $f$ be a non-vanishing continuous function in $|z|\leq r$, that is analytic in the interior. Voronin's universality theorem asserts that translates of the Riemann zeta function $ζ(3/4 + z + it)$ can approximate $f$ uniformly in $|z| < r$ to any given precision $\varepsilon$, and moreover that the set of such $t \in [0, T]$ has measure at least $c(\varepsilon) T$ for some $c(\varepsilon) > 0$, once $T$ is large enough. This was refined by Bagchi who showed that the measure of such $t \in [0,T]$ is $(c(\varepsilon) + o(1)) T$, for all but at most countably many $\varepsilon > …
Let $K$ be a compact set with connected complement on the half-plane Re$(s)>0$, and let $f$ be a continuous function on $K$ which is analytic in its interior. We prove that for any parameter $0<α<1, α\neq \frac 1 2$ then $f(s)$ may be uniformly approximated arbitrarily closely by $ζ(1+iT+iδs,α)$ on $K$ for some $T,δ>0$, where $ζ(s,α)$ denote the Hurwitz zeta-function. This is the first known universality result that is also known to hold for the Hurwitz zeta-function with an algebraic irrational parameter.
We prove that the Riemann zeta-function is not universal on the critical line by using the fact that the Hardy Z-function is real, and some elementary considerations. This is a related to a recent result of Garunkstis and Steuding. We also prove conditional and partial results for non universality on the lines Re(s)=σfor 0<σ<1/2 and together with our recent result for non universality on the line Re(s)=1 it will mostly answer the question of on what lines the zeta-function is universal.
We study the value-distribution of the Riemann zeta-function and related functions on and near the critical line. Amongst others, we focus on the following: The critical line is a natural boundary of the Voronin-type universality property of the Riemann zeta-function. We study a modified concept of `universality' at the critical line: roughly speaking, we add a scaling factor to the vertical shifts that appear in Voronin's universality theorem. Levinson showed that almost all a-points of the Riemann zeta-function lie in a certain funnel-shaped region around the critical line. We rely on argume…
We survey some of the universality properties of the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$ and then explain how to obtain a natural quantization of Voronin's universality theorem (and of its various extensions). Our work builds on the theory of complex fractal dimensions for fractal strings developed by the second author and M. van Frankenhuijsen in \cite{La-vF4}. It also makes an essential use of the functional analytic framework developed by the authors in \cite{HerLa1} for rigorously studying the spectral operator $\mathfrak{a}$ (mapping the geometry onto the spectrum of generalized fractal strings)…
We prove a variant of the Lavrentiev's approximation theorem that allows us to approximate a continuous function on a compact set K in C without interior points and with connected complement, with polynomial functions that are nonvanishing on K. We use this result to obtain a version of the Voronin universality theorem for compact sets K, without interior points and with connected complement where it is sufficient that the function is continuous on K and the condition that it is nonvanishing can be removed. This implies a special case of a criterion of Bagchi, which in the general case has bee…
We study the value-distribution of the Hurwitz zeta-function with algebraic irrational parameter $ζ(s;α)=\sum_{n\geq_0}(n+α)^{-s}$. In particular, we prove effective denseness results of the Hurwitz zeta-function and its derivatives in suitable strips containing the right boundary of the critical strip $1+i\mathbb{R}$. This may be considered as a first "weak" manifestation of universality for those zeta-functions.
We prove a variant of the Mergelyan approximation theorem that allows us to approximate functions that are analytic and nonvanishing in the interior of a compact set K with connected complement, and whose interior is a Jordan domain, with nonvanishing polynomials. This result was proved earlier by the author in the case of a compact set K without interior points, and independently by Gauthier for this case and the case of strictly starlike compact sets. We apply this result on the Voronin universality theorem for compact sets K of this type, where the usual condition that the function is nonva…
We study universality properties of the Epstein zeta function $E_n(L,s)$ for lattices $L$ of large dimension $n$ and suitable regions of complex numbers $s$. Our main result is that, as $n\to\infty$, $E_n(L,s)$ is universal in the right half of the critical strip as $L$ varies over all $n$-dimensional lattices $L$. The proof uses an approximation result for Dirichlet polynomials together with a recent result on the distribution of lengths of lattice vectors in a random lattice of large dimension and a strong uniform estimate for the error term in the generalized circle problem. Using the same …
We study the values taken by the Riemann zeta-function $ζ$ on discrete sets. We show that infinite vertical arithmetic progressions are uniquely determined by the values of $ζ$ taken on this set. Moreover, we prove a joint discrete universality theorem for $ζ$ with respect to certain permutations of the set of positive integers. Finally, we study a generalization of the classical denseness theorems for $ζ$.
We prove that the Voronin universality theorem for the Riemann zeta-function extends to the line Re(s)=1 if in addition to vertical shifts we also allow scaling and adding a sufficiently large constant.
We use subsequence and moving average ergodic theorems applied to Boole's transformation and its variants and their invariant measures on the real line to give new characterisations of the Lindelh{ö}f Hypothesis and the Riemann hypothesis. These ideas are then used to study the value distribution of Dirichlet L series, and the zeta functions of Dedekind, Hurwitz and Riemann and their derivatives. This builds on earlier work of R. L. using Birkhoff's ergodic theorem and probability theory.
This paper studies zeta functions of the form $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} χ(n) n^{-s}$, with $χ$ a completely multiplicative function taking only unimodular values. We denote by $σ(χ)$ the infimum of those $α$ such that the Dirichlet series $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} χ(n) n^{-s}$ can be continued meromorphically to the half-plane $\operatorname{Re} s>α$, and denote by $ζ_χ(s)$ the corresponding meromorphic function in $\operatorname{Re} s>σ(χ)$. We construct $ζ_χ(s)$ that have $σ(χ)\le 1/2$ and are universal for zero-free analytic functions on the half-critical strip $1/2<\operatorname{Re} s <1$, with zero…
We show that a nonvanishing analytic function on a domain in the unit disc can be approximated by (a scalar multiple of) a Blaschke product whose zeros lie on a prescribed circle enclosing the domain. We also give a new proof of the analogous classical result for polynomials. A connection is made to universality results for the Riemann zeta function.
The Hilbert-Polya conjecture states that the imaginary parts of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function are eigenvalues of a quantum hamiltonian. If so, conjectures by Katz and Sarnak put this hamiltonian in Altland and Zirnbauer's universality class C. This implies that the system must have a nonclassical two-valued degree of freedom. In such a system, the dominant primitive periodic orbits contribute to the density of states with a phase factor of -1. This resolves a previously mysterious sign problem with the oscillatory contributions to the density of the Riemann zeros.
The class of Dirichlet series associated with a periodic arithmetical function $f$ includes the Riemann zeta-function as well as Dirichlet $L$-functions to residue class characters. We study the value-distribution of these Dirichlet series $L(s;f)$, resp. their analytic continuation in the neighborhood of the critical line (which is the abscissa of symmetry of the related Riemann-type functional equation). In particular, for a fixed complex number $a\neq 0$, we prove for an even or odd periodic $f$ the number of $a$-points of the $Δ$-factor of the functional equation, prove the existence of th…
