Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ nor $H_2$. Let $P_t$ be the path on $t$ vertices. A dart is the graph obtained from a diamond by adding a new vertex and making it adjacent to exactly one vertex with degree 3 in the diamond.
In this paper, we show that there are finitely many $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,dart)$-free graphs for $k \ge 1$ To prove these results, we use induction on $k$ and perform a careful structural analysis via Strong Perfect Graph Theorem combined with the pigeonhole principle based on the properties of vertex-critical graphs. Moreover, for $k \in \{5, 6, 7\}$ we characterize all $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,dart)$-free graphs using a computer generation algorithm. Our results imply the existence of a polynomial-time certifying algorithm to decide the $k$-colorability of $(P_5,dart)$-free graphs for $k \ge 1$ where the certificate is either a $k$-coloring or a $(k+1)$-vertex-critical induced subgraph.
The computational complexity of the Vertex Coloring problem is known for all hereditary classes of graphs defined by forbidding two connected five-vertex induced subgraphs, except for seven cases. We prove the polynomial-time solvability of four of these problems: for ($P_5$, dart)-free graphs, ($P_5$, banner)-free graphs, ($P_5$, bull)-free graphs, and (fork, bull)-free graphs.
The concept of $χ$-binding functions for classes of free graphs has been extensively studied in the past. In this paper, we improve the existing $χ$-binding function for $\{2K_2, K_1 + C_4\}$-free graphs. Also, we find a linear $χ$-binding function for $\{2K_2, K_2+P_4\}$-free graphs. In addition, we give alternative proofs for the $χ$-binding function of $\{2K_2,gem\}$-free graphs, $\{2K_2,HVN\}$-free graphs and $\{2K_2, K_5-e\}$-free graphs. Finally, for $p\geq3$, we find polynomial $χ$-binding functions for $\{pK_2, H\}$-free graphs where $H\in \{gem, diamond, K_2+P_4, HVN, K_5-e, butterfly…
A simple binary matroid, viewed as a restriction of a finite binary projective geometry $PG(n-1,2)$, is $I_{1,t}$-free if for any rank-$t$ flat of $PG(n-1,2)$, its intersection with the matroid is not a one-element set. In this paper, we show that the simple $I_{1,t}$-free and triangle-free binary matroids have bounded critical number for any $t \geq 1$.
A graph $G$ is said to be $k$-$γ$-vertex critical if the domination numbers $γ(G)$ of $G$ is $k$ and $γ(G - v) < k$ for any vertex $v$ of $G$. Similarly, A graph $G$ is said to be $k$-$γ_{c}$-vertex critical if the connected domination numbers $γ_{c}(G)$ of $G$ is $k$ and $γ_{c}(G - v) < k$ for any vertex $v$ of $G$. The problem of interest is to determine whether or not $2$-connected $k$-$γ$-vertex critical graphs are Hamiltonian. In this paper, for all $k \geq 3$, we provide a $2$-connected $k$-$γ$-vertex critical graph which is non-Hamiltonian. We prove that every $2$-connected $3$-$γ$-vert…
Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$. Let $P_t$ and $C_t$ be the path and the cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. A bull is the graph obtained from a triangle with two disjoint pendant edges. In this paper, we show that there are finitely many 5-vertex-critical ($P_5$,bull)-free graphs.
We prove that every triangle-free $4$-critical graph $G$ satisfies $e(G) \geq \frac{5v(G)+2}{3}$. This result gives a unified proof that triangle-free planar graphs are $3$-colourable, and that graphs of girth at least five which embed in either the projective plane, torus, or Klein Bottle are $3$-colourable, which are results of Grötzsch, Thomassen, and Thomas and Walls. Our result is nearly best possible, as Davies has constructed triangle-free $4$-critical graphs $G$ such that $e(G) = \frac{5v(G) + 4}{3}$. To prove this result, we prove a more general result characterizing sparse $4$-critic…
The theory of Dvorak, Kral, and Thomas (2015) shows that a 4-critical triangle-free graph embedded in the torus has only a bounded number of faces of length greater than 4 and that the size of these faces is also bounded. We study the natural reduction in such embedded graphs - identification of opposite vertices in 4-faces. We give a computer-assisted argument showing that there are exactly four 4-critical triangle-free irreducible toroidal graphs in which this reduction cannot be applied without creating a triangle. Using this result, we show that every 4-critical triangle-free graph embedde…
A graph $G$ is $k$-vertex-critical if $χ(G)=k$ but $χ(G-v)<k$ for all $v\in V(G)$ where $χ(G)$ denotes the chromatic number of $G$. We show that there are only finitely many $k$-critical $(P_3+\ell P_1)$-free graphs for all $k$ and all $\ell$. Together with previous results, the only graphs $H$ for which it is unknown if there are an infinite number of $k$-vertex-critical $H$-free graphs is $H=(P_4+\ell P_1)$ for all $\ell\ge 1$. We consider a restriction on the smallest open case, and show that there are only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical (gem, co-gem)-free graphs for all $k$, where gem$=…
Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph $G$ is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$. A $P_t$ is the path on $t$ vertices. A chair is a $P_4$ with an additional vertex adjacent to one of the middle vertices of the $P_4$. A graph $G$ is $k$-vertex-critical if $G$ has chromatic number $k$ but every proper induced subgraph of $G$ has chromatic number less than $k$. In this paper, we prove that there are finitely many 5-vertex-critical $(P_5,chair)$-free graphs.
We give an exact characterization of 3-colorability of triangle-free graphs drawn in the torus, in the form of 186 "templates" (graphs with certain faces filled by arbitrary quadrangulations) such that a graph from this class is not 3-colorable if and only if it contains a subgraph matching one of the templates. As a consequence, we show every triangle-free graph drawn in the torus with edge-width at least six is 3-colorable, a key property used in an efficient 3-colorability algorithm for triangle-free toroidal graphs.
A position $p$ in a word $w$ is critical if the minimal local period at $p$ is equal to the global period of $w$. According to the Critical Factorisation Theorem all words of length at least two have a critical point. We study the number $η(w)$ of critical points of square-free ternary words $w$, i.e., words over a three letter alphabet. We show that the sufficiently long square-free words $w$ satisfy $η(w) \le |w|-5$ where $|w|$ denotes the length of $w$. Moreover, the bound $|w|-5$ is reached by infinitely many words. On the other hand, every square-free word $w$ has at least $|w|/4$ critica…
Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph $G$ is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$. Let $P_t$ be the path on $t$ vertices. A graph $G$ is $k$-vertex-critical if $G$ has chromatic number $k$ but every proper induced subgraph of $G$ has chromatic number less than $k$. The study of $k$-vertex-critical graphs for graph classes is an important topic in algorithmic graph theory because if the number of such graphs that are in a given hereditary graph class is finite, then there is a polynomial-time algorithm to decide if a graph in the class is $(k-1)$-…
For $k \geq 3$, we prove (i) there is a finite number of $k$-vertex-critical $(P_2+\ell P_1)$-free graphs and (ii) $k$-vertex-critical $(P_3+P_1)$-free graphs have at most $2k-1$ vertices. Together with previous research, these results imply the following characterization where $H$ is a graph of order four: There is a finite number of $k$-vertex-critical $H$-free graphs for fixed $k \geq 5$ if and only if $H$ is one of $\overline{K_4}, P_4, P_2 + 2P_1$, or $P_3 + P_1$. Our results imply the existence of new polynomial-time certifying algorithms for deciding the $k$-colorability of $(P_2+\ell P…

The study of $k$-vertex-critical graphs for graph classes is an important topic in algorithmic graph theory because if the number of such graphs that are in a given hereditary graph class is finite, then there is a polynomial-time algorithm to decide if a graph in the class is $(k-1)$-colorable. In this paper, we prove that for every fixed integer $k\ge 1$, there are only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical ($P_5$,gem)-free graphs and $(P_5,\overline{P_3…
We give a new, stronger proof that there are only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical ($P_5$,~gem)-free graphs for all $k$. Our proof further refines the structure of these graphs and allows for the implementation of a simple exhaustive computer search to completely list all $6$- and $7$-vertex-critical $(P_5$, gem)-free graphs. Our results imply the existence of polynomial-time certifying algorithms to decide the $k$-colourability of $(P_5$, gem)-free graphs for all $k$ where the certificate is either a $k$-colouring or a $(k+1)$-vertex-critical induced subgraph. Our complete lists for $k\le 7$…
