A simple binary matroid, viewed as a restriction of a finite binary projective geometry $PG(n-1,2)$, is $I_{1,t}$-free if for any rank-$t$ flat of $PG(n-1,2)$, its intersection with the matroid is not a one-element set. In this paper, we show that the simple $I_{1,t}$-free and triangle-free binary matroids have bounded critical number for any $t \geq 1$.
We determine the smallest simple triangle-free binary matroids that have no five-element independent flat. This solves a special case of a conjecture of Nelson and Norin.
In this note we investigate some matroid minor structure results. In particular, we present sufficient conditions, in terms of {\em triangles}, for a matroid to have either $U_{2,4}$ or $F_7$ or $M(K_5)$ as a minor.
Let $M$ be an internally $4$-connected binary matroid with every element in three triangles. Then $M$ has at least four elements $e$ such that si$(M/e)$ is internally 4-connected.
A matroid $N$ is said to be triangle-rounded in a class of matroids $\mathcal{M}$ if each $3$-connected matroid $M\in \mathcal{M}$ with a triangle $T$ and an $N$-minor has an $N$-minor with $T$ as triangle. Reid gave a result useful to identify such matroids as stated next: suppose that $M$ is a binary $3$-connected matroid with a $3$-connected minor $N$, $T$ is a triangle of $M$ and $e\in T\cap E(N)$; then $M$ has a $3$-connected minor $M'$ with an $N$-minor such that $T$ is a triangle of $M'$ and $|E(M')|\le |E(N)|+2$. We strengthen this result by dropping the condition that such element $e$…
We prove, by means of an exact structural description, that every simple triangle-free binary matroid $M$ with $|M| > \tfrac{33}{128}2^{r(M)}$ has critical number at most $2$.
A simple binary matroid is called $I_4$-free if none of its rank-4 flats are independent sets. These objects can be equivalently defined as the sets $E$ of points in $PG(n-1,2)$ for which $|E \cap F|$ is not a basis of $F$ for any four-dimensional flat $F$. We prove a decomposition theorem that exactly determines the structure of all $I_4$-free and triangle-free matroids. In particular, our theorem implies that the $I_4$-free and triangle-free matroids have critical number at most $2$.
We show that, for each real number $ε> 0$ there is an integer $c$ such that, if $M$ is a simple triangle-free binary matroid with $|M| \ge (\tfrac{1}{4} + ε) 2^{r(M)}$, then $M$ has critical number at most $c$. We also give a construction showing that no such result holds for any real number less than $\tfrac{1}{4}$. This shows that the "critical threshold" for the triangle is $\tfrac 1 4$. We extend the notion of critical threshold to every simple binary matroid $N$ and conjecture that, if $N$ has critical number $c\ge 3$, then $N$ has critical threshold $1-i\cdot 2^{-c}$ for some $i\in \{2,3…
In this paper we investigate a family of matroids introduced by Ardila and Billey to study one-dimensional intersections of complete flag arrangements of $\mathbb{C}^n$. The set of lattice points $P_n$ inside the equilateral triangle $S_n$ obtained by intersecting the nonnegative cone of $\mathbb{R}^3$ with the affine hyperplane $x_1 + x_2 + x_3 = n-1$ is the ground set of a matroid $\mathcal{T}_n$ whose independent sets are the subsets $S$ of $P_n$ satisfying that $|S \cap P| \le k$ for each translation $P$ of the set $P_k$. Here we study the structure of the matroids $\mathcal{T}_n$ in conne…
In this paper we describe a physical problem, based on electromagnetic fields, whose topological constraints are higher dimensional versions of Kirchhoff's laws, involving $2-$ simplicial complexes embedded in $\mathbb{R} ^3$ rather than graphs. However, we show that, for the skeleton of this complex, involving only triangles and edges, we can build a matroid dual which is a graph. On this graph we build an `ordinary' electrical circuit, solving which we obtain the solution to our original problem. Construction of this graph is through a `sliding' algorithm which simulates sliding on the surfa…
We prove that the non-regular binary matroids with no $P_9^*$-minor have linear growth rate and the maximum size binary matroids with no $P_9^*$-minor are graphic. The main technique in the proof is the Strong Splitter Theorem using which we find the precise infinite families of 3-connected binary matroids with no $P_9^*$-minor.
Slater introduced the point-addition operation on graphs to classify 4-connected graphs. The $Γ$-extension operation on binary matroids is a generalization of the point-addition operation. In this paper, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions to preserve $k$-connectedness of a binary matroid under the $Γ$-extension operation. We also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition to get a connected matroid from a disconnected binary matroid using the $Γ$-extension operation.
For each integer $n \geq 2$, we prove that, if $M$ is a simple rank-$r$ $PG(n-1,2)$-free binary matroid with $|M|>\left(1-\frac{3}{2^n}\right)2^r$, then there is a triangle-free corank-$(n-2)$ flat of $M$.
A binary frame template is a device for creating binary matroids from graphic or cographic matroids. Such matroids are said to conform or coconform to the template. We introduce a preorder on these templates and determine the nontrivial templates that are minimal with respect to this order. As an application of our main result, we determine the eventual growth rates of certain minor-closed classes of binary matroids, including the class of binary matroids with no minor isomorphic to PG(3,2). Our main result applies to all highly-connected matroids in a class, not just those of maximum size. As…
Recently, we introduced the twist polynomials of delta-matroids and gave a characterization of even normal binary delta-matroids whose twist polynomials have only one term and posed a problem: what would happen for odd binary delta-matroids? In this paper, we show that a normal binary delta-matroid whose twist polynomials have only one term if and only if each connected component of the intersection graph of the delta-matroid is either a complete graph of odd order or a single vertex with a loop.
Our splitter theorem for internally 4-connected binary matroids studies pairs of the form (M,N), where N and M are internally 4-connected binary matroids, M has a proper N-minor, and if M' is an internally 4-connected matroid such that M has a proper M'-minor and M' has an N-minor, then |E(M)|-|E(M')|>3. The analysis in the splitter theorem requires the constraint that |E(M)|>15. In this article, we complement that analysis by using an exhaustive computer search to find all such pairs satisfying |E(M)|<16.
In this paper we provide two recognition algorithms for the class of signed-graphic matroids along with necessary and sufficient conditions for a matroid to be signed-graphic. Specifically, we provide a polynomial-time algorithm which determines whether a given binary matroid is signed-graphic and an algorithm which determines whether a general matroid given by an independece oracle is binary signed-graphic.
We give a characterization of the internally 4-connected binary matroids that have no minor isomorphic to M(K3,3). Any such matroid is either cographic, or is isomorphic to a particular single-element extension of the bond matroid of a cubic or quartic Mobius ladder, or is isomorphic to one of eighteen sporadic matroids.
We prove that the maximum size of a simple binary matroid of rank $r \geq 5$ with no AG(3,2)-minor is $\binom{r+1}{2}$ and characterise those matroids achieving this bound. When $r \geq 6$, the graphic matroid $M(K_{r+1})$ is the unique matroid meeting the bound, but there are a handful of smaller examples. In addition, we determine the size function for non-regular simple binary matroids with no AG(3,2)-minor and characterise the matroids of maximum size for each rank.
We consider some applications of our characterisation of the internally 4-connected binary matroids with no M(K3,3)-minor. We characterise the internally 4-connected binary matroids with no minor in some subset of {M(K3,3),M*(K3,3),M(K5),M*(K5)} that contains either M(K3,3) or M*(K3,3). We also describe a practical algorithm for testing whether a binary matroid has a minor in the subset. In addition we characterise the growth-rate of binary matroids with no M(K3,3)-minor, and we show that a binary matroid with no M(K3,3)-minor has critical exponent over GF(2) at most equal to four.
An excluded minor characterization for the class of binary signed-graphic matroids with graphic cocircuits is provided. In this report we present the necessary computations for the case analysis in the proof.
The handle slide operation, originally defined for ribbon graphs, was extended to delta-matroids by I. Moffatt and E. Mphako-Bandab, who show that, using a delta-matroid analogue of handle slides, every binary delta-matroid in which the empty set is feasible can be written in a canonical form analogous to the canonical form for one-vertex maps on a surface. We provide a canonical form for binary delta-matroids without restriction on the feasibility of the empty set.
Let ${\bf A}={\bf A}_{n,m,k}$ be a random $n\times m$ matrix over $\mathbf{GF}_2$ wher each column consists of $k$ randomly chosen ones. Let $M$ be an arbirary fixed binary matroid. We show that if $m/n$ and $k$ are sufficiently large then as $n\to\infty$ the binary matroid induced by {\bf A} contains $M$ as a minor.
We give an excluded-minor characterization for the class of matroids M in which M\e or M/e is binary for all e in E(M). This class is closely related to the class of matroids in which every member is binary or can be obtained from a binary matroid by relaxing a circuit-hyperplane. We also provide an excluded-minor characterization for the second class.
In this paper, first steps are taken towards characterising lattices of cyclic flats $\mathcal{Z}(M)$ that belong to matroids $M$ that can be represented over a prescribed finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Two natural maps from $\mathcal{Z}(M)$ to the lattice of cyclic flats of a minor of $M$ are given. Binary matroids are characterised via their lattice of cyclic flats. It is shown that the lattice of cyclic flats of a simple binary matroid without isthmuses is atomic.
In this work, we study the interlace polynomial as a generalization of a graph invariant to delta-matroids. We prove that the interlace polynomial satisfies the four-term relation for delta-matroids and determines thus a finite type invariant of links in the 3-sphere.
The class of cographs or complement-reducible graphs is the class of graphs that can be generated from $K_1$ using the operations of disjoint union and complementation. By analogy, this paper introduces the class of binary comatroids as the class of matroids that can be generated from the empty matroid using the operations of direct sum and taking complements inside of binary projective space. We show that a proper flat of a binary comatroid is a binary comatroid. Our main result identifies those binary non-comatroids for which every proper flat is a binary comatroid. The paper also proves the…
An 'induced restriction' of a simple binary matroid $M$ is a restriction $M|F$, where $F$ is a flat of $M$. We consider the class $\mathcal{M}$ of all simple binary matroids $M$ containing neither a free matroid on three elements (which we call a 'claw'), nor a Fano plane as an induced restriction. We give an exact structure theorem for this class; two of its consequences are that the matroids in $\mathcal{M}$ have unbounded critical number, while the matroids in $\mathcal{M}$ not containing the clique $M(K_5)$ as an induced restriction have critical number at most $2$.
In this paper, we give a complete characterization of binary matroids with no $P_9$-minor. A 3-connected binary matroid $M$ has no $P_9$-minor if and only if $M$ is one of the internally 4-connected non-regular minors of a special 16-element matroid $Y_{16}$, a 3-connected regular matroid, a binary spike with rank at least four, or a matroid obtained by 3-summing copies of the Fano matroid to a 3-connected cographic matroid $M^*(K_{3, n})$, $M^*(K_{3, n}^{\prime})$, $M^*(K_{3, n}^{\prime\prime})$, or $M^*(K_{3, n}^{\prime\prime\prime})$ ($n\ge 2$). Here the simple graphs $K_{3, n}^{\prime}, K_…
Let G be a finite simple graph. From the pioneering work of R. P. Stanley it is known that the cycle matroid of G is supersolvable iff G is chordal (rigid): this is another way to read Dirac's theorem on chordal graphs. Chordal binary matroids are not in general supersolvable. Nevertheless we prove that, for every supersolvable binary matroid M, a maximal chain of modular flats of M canonically determines a chordal graph.
Delta-matroid theory is often thought of as a generalization of topological graph theory. It is well-known that an orientable embedded graph is bipartite if and only if its Petrie dual is orientable. In this paper, we first introduce the concepts of Eulerian and bipartite delta-matroids and then extend the result from embedded graphs to arbitrary binary delta-matroids. The dual of any bipartite embedded graph is Eulerian. We also extend the result from embedded graphs to the class of delta-matroids that arise as twists of binary matroids. Several related results are also obtained.
The cogirth, $g^\ast(M)$, of a matroid $M$ is the size of a smallest cocircuit of $M$. Finding the cogirth of a graphic matroid can be done in polynomial time, but Vardy showed in 1997 that it is NP-hard to find the cogirth of a binary matroid. In this paper, we show that $g^\ast(M)\leq \frac{1}{2}\vert E(M)\vert$ when $M$ is binary, unless $M$ simplifies to a projective geometry. We also show that, when equality holds, $M$ simplifies to a Bose-Burton geometry, that is, a matroid of the form $PG(r-1,2)-PG(k-1,2)$. These results extend to matroids representable over arbitrary finite fields.
Let AG(3,2)xU(1,1) denote the binary matroid obtained from the direct sum of AG(3,2) and a coloop by completing the 3-point lines between every element in AG(3,2) and the coloop. We prove that every internally 4-connected binary matroid that does not have a minor isomorphic to M(K5\e) is isomorphic to a minor of (AG(3,2)xU(1,1))*.
We introduce a binary matroid M(IAS(G)) associated with a looped simple graph G. M(IAS(G)) classifies G up to local equivalence, and determines the delta-matroid and isotropic system associated with G. Moreover, a parametrized form of its Tutte polynomial yields the interlace polynomials of G.
A matroid $N$ is a lift of a binary matroid $M$, if $N=Q\backslash X$ when $Q/X=M$ for some binary matroid $Q$ and $X \subseteq E(Q)$ and is called an elementary lift of $M$, if $|X|=1$. A splitting operation on a binary matroid can result in an elementary lift. An elementary lift of a cographic or a graphic matroid need not be cographic or graphic. We intend to characterize the cographic matroids whose elementary lift is a graphic matroid.
A biased graph is a graph with a class of selected circles ("cycles", "circuits"), called "balanced", such that no theta subgraph contains exactly two balanced circles. A biased graph has two natural matroids, the frame matroid and the lift matroid. A classical question in matroid theory is whether a matroid can be embedded in a projective geometry. There is no known general answer, but for matroids of biased graphs it is possible to give algebraic criteria. Zaslavsky has previously given such criteria for embeddability of biased-graphic matroids in Desarguesian projective spaces; in this pape…
Fleischner introduced the idea of splitting a vertex of degree at least three in a connected graph and used the operation to characterize Eulerian graphs. Raghunathan et. al. extended the splitting operation from graphs to binary matroids. It has been studied that splitting operation, in general, may not preserve the connectedness of the binary matroid. Interestingly, it is true that the splitting matroid of a disconnected matroid may be connected. In this paper, we characterize the binary disconnected matroids whose splitting matroid is connected.
We show that, for each real number $α> 0$ and odd integer $k\ge 5$ there is an integer $c$ such that, if $M$ is a simple binary matroid with $|M| \ge α2^{r(M)}$ and with no $k$-element circuit, then $M$ has critical number at most $c$. The result is an easy application of a regularity lemma for finite abelian groups due to Green.
In 2004, Ehrenfeucht, Harju, and Rozenberg showed that any graph on a vertex set $V$ can be obtained from a complete graph on $V$ via a sequence of the operations of complementation, switching edges and non-edges at a vertex, and local complementation. The last operation involves taking the complement in the neighbourhood of a vertex. In this paper, we consider natural generalizations of these operations for binary matroids and explore their behaviour. We characterize all binary matroids obtainable from the binary projective geometry of rank $r$ under the operations of complementation and swit…
A three-tope committee K* for a simple oriented matroid M is a 3-subset of its maximal covectors such that every positive halfspace of M contains at least two topes from K*. We consider three-tope committees as the vertex sets of triangles in graphs associated with the topes and enumerate them making use of the properties of the poset of convex subsets of the ground set of M.
In this work we provide a decomposition theorem for the class of quaternary and non-binary signed-graphic matroids. This generalizes previous results for binary signed-graphic matroids and graphic matroids, and it provides the theoretical basis for a recognition algorithm.
The prism graph is the dual of the complete graph on five vertices with an edge deleted, $K_5\backslash e$. In this paper we determine the class of binary matroids with no prism minor. The motivation for this problem is the 1963 result by Dirac where he identified the simple 3-connected graphs with no minor isomorphic to the prism graph. We prove that besides Dirac's infinite families of graphs and four infinite families of non-regular matroids determined by Oxley, there are only three possibilities for a matroid in this class: it is isomorphic to the dual of the generalized parallel connectio…
Let M and N be internally 4-connected binary matroids such that M has a proper N-minor, and |E(N)| is at least seven. As part of our project to develop a splitter theorem for internally 4-connected binary matroids, we prove the following result: if M\e has no N-minor whenever e is in a triangle of M, and M/e has no N-minor whenever e is in a triad of M, then M has a minor, M', such that M' is internally 4-connected with an N-minor, and 0 < |E(M)|-|E(M')| < 3.
A simple binary matroid is called claw-free if none of its rank-3 flats are independent sets. These objects can be equivalently defined as the sets $E$ of points in $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,2)$ for which $|E \cap P|$ is not a basis of $P$ for any plane $P$, or as the subsets $X$ of $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ containing no linearly independent triple $x,y,z$ for which $x+y,y+z,x+z,x+y+z \notin X$. We prove a decomposition theorem that exactly determines the structure of all claw-free matroids. The theorem states that claw-free matroids either belong to one of three particular basic classes of claw-free matroids,…
Let $EX[M_1\dots, M_k]$ denote the class of binary matroids with no minors isomorphic to $M_1, \dots, M_k$. In this paper we give a decomposition theorem for $EX[S_{10}, S_{10}^*]$, where $S_{10}$ is a certain 10-element rank-4 matroid. As corollaries we obtain decomposition theorems for the classes obtained by excluding the Kuratowski graphs $EX[M(K_{3,3}), M^*(K_{3,3}), M(K_5), M^*(K_5)]$ and $EX[M(K_{3,3}), M^*(K_{3,3})]$. These decomposition theorems imply results on internally $4$-connected matroids by Zhou [\ref{Zhou2004}], Qin and Zhou [\ref{Qin2004}], and Mayhew, Royle and Whitte [\ref…
Zaslavsky introduced the concept of lifted-graphic matroid. For binary matroids, a binary elementary lift can be defined in terms of the splitting operation. In this paper, we give a method to get a forbidden-minor characterization for the class of graphic matroids whose all lifted-graphic matroids are also graphic using the splitting operation.
Stanley's symmetrized chromatic polynomial is a generalization of the ordinary chromatic polynomial to a graph invariant with values in a ring of polynomials in infnitely many variables. The ordinary chromatic polynomial is a specialization of the Stanley's one. Our goal is to extend Stanley's chromatic polynomial to embedded graphs. In contrast to well-known extensions of, say, the Tutte polynomial from abstract to embedded graphs [5], we do not treat an embedded graph as an abstract graph endowed with additional information about the embedding. Instead, we consider the binary delta-matroid a…
Motivated by a property of linear resistive electrical networks, we introduce the class of Rayleigh matroids. This is a subclass of the balanced matroids introduced by Feder and Mihail [FM] in 1992. We prove a variety of results relating Rayleigh matroids to other well-known classes -- in particular, we show that a binary matroid is Rayleigh if and only if it does not contain S_8 as a minor. This has the consequence that a binary matroid is balanced if and only if it is Rayleigh, and provides the first complete proof in print that S_8 is the only minor-minimal binary non-balanced matroid, as c…
In graph theory, the Szemerédi regularity lemma gives a decomposition of the indicator function for any graph $G$ into a structured component, a uniform part, and a small error. This result, in conjunction with a counting lemma that guarantees many copies of a subgraph $H$ provided a copy of $H$ appears in the structured component, is used in many applications to extremal problems. An analogous decomposition theorem exists for functions over $\mathbb{F}_p^n$. Specializing to $p=2$, we obtain a statement about the indicator functions of simple binary matroids. In this paper we extend previous r…
