We construct supersymmetric gravitational soliton solutions of five-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to arbitrarily many vector multiplets. The solutions are complete, globally stationary, $1/4$-BPS and are asymptotically locally AdS$_5$ with conformal boundary $\mathbb{R} \times L(p,1)$. The construction uses an $SU(2) \times U(1)-$invariant ansatz originally used by Gutowski and Reall to construct supersymmetric asymptotically AdS$_5$ black holes. A subset of these solutions have previously been obtained as supersymmetric limits of a class of local solutions of $U(1)^3$ gauged supergravity found by Chong-Cvetic-Lu-Pope, and by Lucietti-Ovchinnikov in their classification of $SU(2)$-invariant solutions of minimal gauged supergravity.
The AdS soliton is a nonsingular spacetime that has a flat conformal boundary with a compact $S^1$ direction. We find a horizonless cohomogeneity-1 metric that describes nonlinear gravitational oscillations of the AdS soliton in five dimensions. We call this spacetime the resonating AdS soliton. This solution is obtained as the nonlinear extension of normal modes of the AdS soliton dual to spin-2 glueball excitations. The boundary energy momentum tensor of the resonating AdS soliton has time periodic components, and it is interpreted as a coherently excited state in the dual field theory. Phys…
We construct supersymmetric, asymptotically AdS$_5$ gravitational soliton solutions of five-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to arbitrarily many vector multiplets. These generalize the supersymmetric solitons of $U(1)^3$ gauged supergravity previously constructed by Chong, Cvetic, Lu, and Pope. We show that the solitons contain evanescent ergosurfaces and give an argument that these solitons should be nonlinearly unstable.
We investigate the behaviors of holographic entanglement entropy for AdS soliton geometries in the presence of higher derivative corrections. We calculate the leading higher derivative corrections for the AdS5 setup in type IIB string and for the AdS4,7 ones in M-theory. We also study the holographic entanglement entropy in Gauss-Bonnet gravity and study how the confinement/deconfinement phase transition observed in AdS solitons is affected by the higher derivative corrections.
We consider the four-dimensional Einstein-Klein-Gordon-AdS system with conformal mass subject to the Robin boundary conditions at infinity. Above a critical value of the Robin parameter, at which the AdS spacetime goes linearly unstable, we prove existence of a family of globally regular static solutions (that we call AdS Robin solitons) and discuss their properties.
We construct exact hairy AdS soliton solutions in Einstein-dilaton gravity theory. We examine their thermodynamic properties and discuss the role of these solutions for the existence of first order phase transitions for hairy black holes. The negative energy density associated to hairy AdS solitons can be interpreted as the Casimir energy that is generated in the dual filed theory when the fermions are antiperiodic on the compact coordinate.
In this work we study the phase transitions between the planar charged AdS black hole and the planar charged soliton. The planar soliton is obtained as a double analytic continuation of the charged black hole metric, which also involves analytically continuing the electric charge. We show that there are phase transitions between both solutions depending on the electric potential, magnetic flux and temperature. The analysis is carried out in the Grand-Canonical ensemble.
We discuss electrostatics in Anti-de-Sitter ($AdS$) spacetime, in global coordinates. We observe that the multipolar expansion has two crucial differences to that in Minkowski spacetime. First, there are everywhere regular solutions, with finite energy, for every multipole moment except for the monopole. Second, all multipole moments decay with the same inverse power of the areal radius, $1/r$, as spatial infinity is approached. The first observation suggests there may be regular, self-gravitating, Einstein-Maxwell solitons in $AdS$ spacetime. The second observation, renders a Lichnerowicz-typ…
We construct new static, asymptotically AdS solutions where the conformal infinity is the product of Minkowski spacetime $M_n$ and a sphere $S^m$. Both globally regular, soliton-type solutions and black hole solutions are considered. The black holes can be viewed as natural AdS generalizations of the Schwarzschild black branes in Kaluza-Klein theory. The solitons provide new brane-world models with compact extra-dimensions. Different from the Randall-Sundrum single-brane scenario, a Schwarzschild black hole on the Ricci flat part of these branes does not lead to a naked singularity in the bulk…
In this paper, we reconsider the energy and tension laws of the Ricci flat black hole by taking the contribution of the tension term into account. After this considering and inspired by the interchange symmetry between the Ricci flat black hole and the AdS soliton solution which arises from the double analytic continuation of the time and compact spatial direction, we find out the analogy of the energy and tension laws of the AdS soliton solution. Moreover, we also investigate the energy and tension laws of the boosted Ricci flat black hole, and discuss the boosted AdS soliton solution. Howeve…
We investigate the marginally stable modes of the scalar (vector) perturbations in the AdS soliton background coupled to electric field. In the probe limit, we find that the marginally stable modes can reveal the onset of the phase transitions of this model. The critical chemical potentials obtained from this approach are in good agreement with the previous numerical or analytical results.
We show how to construct supersymmetric warped AdS$_7$ vacua of massive IIA and AdS$_6$ vacua of IIB supergravity, using "half-maximal structures" of exceptional field theory. We use this formalism to obtain the minimal consistent truncations around these AdS vacua.
We explore the behaviour of charged scalar solitons in asymptotically global AdS4 spacetimes. This is motivated in part by attempting to identify under what circumstances such objects can become large relative to the AdS length scale. We demonstrate that such solitons generically do get large and in fact in the planar limit smoothly connect up with the zero temperature limit of planar scalar hair black holes. In particular, for given Lagrangian parameters we encounter multiple branches of solitons: some which are perturbatively connected to the AdS vacuum and surprisingly, some which are not. …
We show that in D=2n+1 dimensions, when mass is negative and all angular momenta are non-vanishing, Kerr and Kerr-AdS metrics describe smooth time machines, with no curvature singularity. Turning off the angular momenta appropriately can lead to static AdS solitons with negative mass. Setting zero the cosmological constant yields a class of Ricci-flat Kähler metrics in D=2n dimensions. We also show that Euclidean-signatured AdS solitons with negative mass can also arise in odd dimensions. We then construct time machines in D=5 minimal gauged supergravity that carry only magnetic dipole charges…
We analytically study the holographic superfluid phase transition in the AdS soliton background by using the variational method for the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem. By investigating the holographic s-wave and p-wave superfluid models in the probe limit, we observe that the spatial component of the gauge field will hinder the phase transition. Moreover, we note that, different from the AdS black hole spacetime, in the AdS soliton background the holographic superfluid phase transition always belongs to the second order and the critical exponent of the system takes the mean-field value in …
Minimal $D=5$ supergravity admits asymptotically globally AdS$_5$ gravitational solitons (strictly stationary, geodesically complete spacetimes with positive mass). We show that, like asymptotically flat gravitational solitons, these solutions satisfy mass and mass variation formulas analogous to those satisfied by AdS black holes. A thermodynamic volume associated to the non-trivial topology of the spacetime plays an important role in this construction. We then consider these solitons within the holographic ``complexity equals action'' and ``complexity equals volume'' conjectures as simple ex…
We study vacuum domain walls in a class of four-dimensional $N=1$ supergravity theories where along with the matter field, forming the wall, there is more than one ``dilaton'', each respecting $SU(1,1)$ symmetry in their sub-sector. We find {\it supersymmetric} (planar, static) walls, interpolaing between Minkowski vacuum and a new class of supersymmetric vacua which have a naked (planar) singularity. Such walls provide the first example of supersymmetric classical ``solitons'' with naked singularities, and thus violate the (strong) cosmic censorship conjecture within a supersymmetric theory.
We present a calculation of two-point correlation functions of the stress-energy tensor in the strongly-coupled, confining gauge theory which is holographically dual to the AdS soliton geometry. The fact that the AdS soliton smoothly caps off at a certain point along the holographic direction, ensures that these correlators are dominated by quasinormal mode contributions and thus show an exponential decay in position space. In order to study such a field theory on a curved spacetime, we foliate the six-dimensional AdS soliton with a Schwarzschild black hole. Via gauge/gravity duality, this new…
We construct a new class of Einstein-Maxwell static solutions with a magnetic field in $D$-dimensions (with $D\geq 5$ an odd number), approaching at infinity a globally Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. In addition to the mass, the new solutions possess an extra-parameter associated with a non-zero magnitude of the magnetic potential at infinity. Some of the black holes possess a non-trivial zero-horizon size limit, which corresponds to a solitonic deformation of the AdS background.
Supersymmetric, asymptotically AdS5, black hole solutions of five dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to arbitrarily many abelian vector multiplets are presented. The general nature of supersymmetric solutions of this theory is discussed. All maximally supersymmetric solutions of this theory (with or without gauging) are obtained.
We investigate static, planar, solutions of Einstein-scalar gravity admitting an anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacuum. When the squared mass of the scalar field is positive and the scalar potential can be derived from a superpotential, minimum energy theorems indicate the existence of a scalar soliton. On the other hand, for these models, no-hair theorems forbid the existence of hairy black brane solutions with AdS asymptotics. By considering a specific example (an exact integrable model which has the form of a Toda molecule) and by deriving explicit exact solution, we show that these models allow for …
We investigate the scalar perturbations in an AdS soliton background coupled to a Maxwell field via marginally stable modes. In the probe limit, we study the magnetic field effect on the holographic insulator/superconductor phase transition numerically and analytically. The condensate will be localized in a finite circular region for any finite constant magnetic field. Near the critical point, we find that there exists a simple relation among the critical chemical potential, magnetic field, the charge and mass of the scalar field. This relation indicates that the presence of the magnetic field…
We study spherically symmetric soliton solutions in a model with a conformally coupled scalar field as well as in full conformal gravity. We observe that a new type of limiting behaviour appears for particular choices of the self-coupling of the scalar field, i.e. the solitons interpolate smoothly between the Anti-de Sitter vacuum and an uncharged configuration. Furthermore, within conformal gravity the qualitative approach of a limiting solution does not change when varying the charge of the scalar field - contrary to the Einstein-Hilbert case. However, it changes with the scalar self-couplin…
We first reconstruct the conserved (Abbott-Deser) charges in the spin connection formalism of gravity for asymptotically (Anti)-de Sitter spaces, and then compute the masses of the AdS soliton and the recently found Eguchi-Hanson solitons in generic odd dimensions, unlike the previous result obtained for only five dimensions. These solutions have negative masses compared to the global AdS or AdS/Z_p spacetimes. As a separate note, we also compute the masses of the recent even dimensional Taub-NUT-Reissner-Nordstrom metrics.
In this contribution we describe some soliton based techniques for generating classical AdS string solutions. The methods introduced are useful for further understanding of rotating AdS configurations with spikes which correspond to higher twist operators in SYM theory. The main identification (accomplished in arXiv:0712.1193) between solitons and string spikes is reviewed and extended. We describe how inverse scattering technique can be applied for reconstructing AdS string configurations from soliton solutions of sinh-Gordon theory (in the example of ${\rm AdS}_3$).
We study the conditions for the fivebrane worldvolume theory in D=11 to admit supersymmetric solitons with non-vanishing self-dual three-form. We construct some new soliton solutions consisting of ``superpositions'' of calibrated surfaces, self-dual strings and instantons.
The stability of physical systems depends on the existence of a state of least energy. In gravity, this is guaranteed by the positive energy theorem. For topological reasons this fails for nonsupersymmetric Kaluza-Klein compactifications, which can decay to arbitrarily negative energy. For related reasons, this also fails for the AdS soliton, a globally static, asymptotically toroidal $Λ<0$ spacetime with negative mass. Nonetheless, arguing from the AdS/CFT correspondence, Horowitz and Myers (hep-th/9808079) proposed a new positive energy conjecture, which asserts that the AdS soliton is the u…
We determine all asymptotically flat, supersymmetric and biaxisymmetric soliton and black hole solutions to five dimensional minimal supergravity. In particular, we show that the solution must be a multi-centred solution with a Gibbons-Hawking base. The proof involves combining local constraints from supersymmetry with global constraints for stationary and biaxisymmetric spacetimes. This reveals that the horizon topology must be one of S^3, S^1 x S^2 or a lens space L(p,1), thereby providing a refinement of the allowed horizon topologies. We construct the general smooth solution for each possi…
Electrostatics on global Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) spacetime is sharply different from that on global Minkowski spacetime. It admits a multipolar expansion with everywhere regular, finite energy solutions, for every multipole moment except the monopole (arXiv:1507.04370). A similar statement holds for global AdS magnetostatics. We show that everywhere regular, finite energy, electric plus magnetic fields exist on AdS in three distinct classes: $(I)$ with non-vanishing total angular momentum $J$; $(II)$ with vanishing $J$ but non-zero angular momentum density, $T^t_φ$; $(III)$ with vanishing $J$ and…
The general criteria for finding bosonic supersymmetric worldvolume solitons is reviewed. We concentrate on D-branes, discussing in particular, bion/dyon solutions and D3 branes on NS5 backgrounds.
We study Lorentzian supersymmetric configurations in $D=4$ and $D=5$ gauged $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity. We show that there are smooth $1/2$ BPS solutions which are asymptotically AdS$_{4}$ and AdS$_{5}$ with a planar boundary, a compact spacelike direction and with a Wilson line on that circle. There are solitons where the $S^{1}$ shrinks smoothly to zero in the interior, with a magnetic flux through the circle determined by the Wilson line, which are AdS analogues of the Melvin fluxtube. There is also a solution with a constant gauge field, which is pure AdS. Both solutions preserve half of…
We study the basic holographic insulator and superconductor phase transition in the AdS soliton background by generalizing the spontaneous breaking of a global U(1) symmetry to occur via St$\ddot{u}$ckelberg mechanism. We construct the soliton solutions with backreaction and examine the effects of the backreaction on the condensation of the scalar hair in the generalized St$\ddot{u}$ckelberg Lagrangian. We disclose rich physics in various phase transitions. In addition to the AdS soliton configuration, we also examine the property of the phase transition in the AdS black hole background.
We investigate extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes in four-dimensional N=2 abelian gauged supergravity. We find a new attractor equation which is not reduced to the one in the asymptotically flat spacetime. Focusing on so-called the T^3-model with a single neutral vector multiplet, we obtain non-supersymmetric extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole solutions with regular event horizon in the D0-D4 and the D2-D6 charge configurations. The negative cosmological constant emerges even without the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters. Furthermore, we also argue the formal description of the non-…
All supersymmetric generalizations of the Standard Model allow for stable non-topological solitons of the Q-ball type which may have non-zero baryon and lepton numbers, as well as the electric charge. These solitons can be produced in the early Universe, can affect the nucleosynthesis, and can lead to a variety of other cosmological consequences.
We employ a thermodynamic analysis to determine the phase structure of Eguchi-Hanson solitons, Schwarzschild-AdS/$\mathbb{Z}_k$ black holes and thermal AdS/$\mathbb{Z}_k$. The Euclidean actions are calculated by two equable means: the first uses the Eguchi-Hanson soliton as the thermal background while the second makes use of minimal boundary counterterms in the action necessary to render individual actions finite. The Euclidean actions are then utilised to determine the phase structure in arbitrary odd dimension; it is found that there is a Hawking-Page phase transition and also a phase trans…
We find the solitons of massive (1,1)-supersymmetric sigma models with target space the groups $SO(2)$ and $SU(2)$ for a class of scalar potentials and compute their charge, mass and moduli space metric. We also investigate the massive sigma models with target space any semisimple Lie group and show that some of their solitons can be obtained from embedding the $SO(2)$ and $SU(2)$ solitons.
We describe a number of striking features of a class of smooth solitons in gauged and ungauged minimal supergravity in five dimensions. The solitons are globally asymptotically flat or asymptotically AdS without any Kaluza-Klein directions but contain a minimal sphere formed when a cycle pinches off in the interior of the spacetime. The solutions carry a local magnetic charge and many have rather unusual ergosurfaces. Perhaps most strikingly, many of the solitons have more electric charge or, in the asymptotically AdS case, more electric charge and angular momentum than is allowed by the usual…
We consider soliton solutions in AdS$_{4}$ with a flat slicing and Wilson loops around one cycle. We study the phase structure and find the ground state and identify supersymmetric solutions as a function of the Wilson loops. We work in the context of a scalar field truncation of gauged $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity, where all the dilatons are equal and all the axions vanish in the STU model. In this theory, we construct new soliton solutions parameterized by two Wilson lines. We find that there is a degeneracy of supersymmetric solutions. We also show that, for alternate boundary conditions, t…
These notes are based on lectures given by C. Callan and J. Harvey at the 1991 Trieste Spring School on String Theory and Quantum Gravity. The subject is the construction of supersymmetric soliton solutions to superstring theory. A brief review of solitons and instantons in supersymmetric theories is presented. Yang-Mills instantons are then used to construct soliton solutions to heterotic string theory of various types. The structure of these solutions is discussed using low-energy field theory, sigma-model arguments, and in one case an exact construction of the underlying superconformal fiel…
The first examples of supersymmetric, asymptotically AdS5, black hole solutions are presented. They form a 1-parameter family of solutions of minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity. Their angular momentum can never vanish. The solutions are obtained by a systematic analysis of supersymmetric solutions with Killing horizons. Other new examples of such solutions are obtained. These include solutions for which the horizon is a homogeneous Nil or SL(2,R) manifold.
Using exceptional field theory we construct supersymmetric warped AdS$_7$ vacua of massive IIA and AdS$_6$ vacua of IIB, as well as their consistent truncations including vector multiplets. We show there are no consistent truncations of massive IIA supergravity around its supersymmetric AdS$_7$ vacua with vector multiplets when the Roman's mass is non-vanishing. For AdS$_6$ vacua of IIB supergravity, we find that in addition to the consistent truncation to pure $\mathrm{F}(4)$ gauged SUGRA, the only other half-maximal truncations that are consistent result in $\mathrm{F}(4)$ gauged SUGRA coupl…
We discuss various physical aspects of nonextremal, extremal and supersymmetric black holes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (ADS) spacetimes. Specifically, we discuss how the isolated horizon (IH) framework leads to an ambiguity-free description of rotating black holes in these spacetimes. We then apply this framework to investigate the properties of supersymmetric isolated horizons (SIHs) in four-dimensional N = 2 gauged supergravity. Among other results we find that they are necessarily extremal, that rotating SIHs must have non-trivial electromagnetic fields, and that non-rotating SIHs nec…
We construct a new class of charged, rotating hairy black holes in a consistent truncation of $\mathcal{N} = 8$ supergravity, which retains one charged scalar field and a U$(1)$ gauge field. These hairy solutions can be uplifted to solutions of type IIB supergravity with AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ asymptotics. We find rotating hairy black holes with finite entropy arbitrarily close to the supersymmetric bound - the resulting supersymmetric solution is a one-parameter extension of the Gutowski-Reall solution. These solutions have finite curvature invariants (including at extremality), but in the extrem…
This paper addresses a long standing problem, the counting of the microstates of supersymmetric asymptotically AdS black holes in terms of a holographically dual field theory. We focus on a class of asymptotically AdS$_4$ static black holes preserving two real supercharges which are dual to a topologically twisted deformation of the ABJM theory. We evaluate in the large $N$ limit the topologically twisted index of the ABJM theory and we show that it correctly reproduces the entropy of the AdS$_4$ black holes. An extremization of the index with respect to a set of chemical potentials is require…
We review some recent developments in the subject of quantum corrections to soliton mass and central charge. We consider in particular approaches which use local densities for these corrections, as first discussed by Hidenaga Yamagishi. We then consider dimensional regularization of the supersymmetric kink in 1+1 dimensions and an extension of this method to a 2+1-dimensional gauge theory with supersymmetric abelian Higgs vortices as the solitons.
We construct geons starting with gravitational perturbations of the AdS soliton. Previous studies of a charged scalar field in the soliton background showed a holographic insulator/superconductor transition at a critical chemical potential. We explore the possibility that dimensional reduction of the geon could model a transition to a d-wave superconductor. We find that although one does get a charged spin-2 condensate, it has higher free energy than the state without the condensate, so there is no phase transition.
I consider a supersymmetric Bogomolny-type model in 2+1 dimensions originating from topological string theory. By a gauge fixing this model is reduced to a supersymmetric U(n) chiral model with a Wess-Zumino-Witten-type term in 2+1 dimensions. After a noncommutative extension of the model, I employ the dressing method to construct explicit multi-soliton configurations on noncommutative R^{2,1|2N}.
We show that there are solitons with fractional fermion number in integrable $N$=2 supersymmetric models. We obtain the soliton S-matrix for the minimal, $N$=2 supersymmetric theory perturbed in the least relevant chiral primary field, the $Φ_{(1,3)}$ superfield. The perturbed theory has a nice Landau-Ginzburg description with a Chebyshev polynomial superpotential. We show that the S-matrix is a tensor product of an associated ordinary $ADE$ minimal model S-matrix with a supersymmetric part. We calculate the ground-state energy in these theories and in the analogous $N$=1 case and $SU(2)$ cose…
In the last decade it became clear that methods and techniques based on supersymmetry provide deep insights in quantum chromodynamics and other supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric gauge theories at strong coupling. In this review we summarize major advances in the critical (Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfeld-saturated, BPS for short) solitons in supersymmetric theories and their implications for understanding basic dynamical regularities of non-supersymmetric theories. After a brief introduction in the theory of critical solitons (including a historical introduction) we focus on three topics: (i)…
We prove two theorems, announced in hep-th/0108170, for static spacetimes that solve Einstein's equation with negative cosmological constant. The first is a general structure theorem for spacetimes obeying a certain convexity condition near infinity, analogous to the structure theorems of Cheeger and Gromoll for manifolds of non-negative Ricci curvature. For spacetimes with Ricci-flat conformal boundary, the convexity condition is associated with negative mass. The second theorem is a uniqueness theorem for the negative mass AdS soliton spacetime. This result lends support to the new positive …

We study both massive and massless particle's geodesic motion in the background of general dimensional AdS-Sol space-time. We find that the massive particles oscillate along the radial direction, while massless particles experience one-time bouncing as they approach the "horizon" line of the soliton. Our results provide a direct way to understand the negative energy/masses leading to the AdS-Sol geometry. As a potential application, we extend the point particle to a 3-brane and fix the background as a 5+1 dimension AdS-Sol, thus obtain a very natural bouncing/cyclic cosmological model.
Interactions of noncommutative waves and solitons in 2+1 dimensions can be analyzed exactly for a supersymmetric and integrable U(n) chiral model extending the Ward model. Using the Moyal-deformed dressing method in an antichiral superspace, we construct explicit time-dependent solutions of its noncommutative field equations by iteratively solving linear equations. The approach is illustrated by presenting scattering configurations for two noncommutative U(2) plane waves and for two noncommutative U(2) solitons as well as by producing a noncommutative U(1) two-soliton bound state.
We point out the existence of some simple string solitons in AdS_5 x S^5, which at the same time are spinning in AdS_5 and pulsating in S^5, or vice-versa. This introduces an additional arbitrary constant into the scaling relations between energy and spin or R-charge. The arbitrary constant is not an angular momentum, but can be related to the amplitude of the pulsation. We discuss the solutions in detail and consider the scaling relations. Pulsating multi spin or multi R-charge solutions can also be constructed.
We construct self-dual string soliton solutions in $AdS_4\times S^7$ spacetime, starting from the covariant equations of motion of M5-brane. We study the properties of the solutions and find that their action are linearized, indicating the BPS nature of the solutions, and they have the same electric and magnetic charge. The straight string soliton solution represents the configuration of the membranes ending on M5-brane with a straight string intersection, and it behaves like the spiky solution in flat spacetime. The spherical string soliton solution, which could be related to the straight one…
