We employ a thermodynamic analysis to determine the phase structure of Eguchi-Hanson solitons, Schwarzschild-AdS/$\mathbb{Z}_k$ black holes and thermal AdS/$\mathbb{Z}_k$. The Euclidean actions are calculated by two equable means: the first uses the Eguchi-Hanson soliton as the thermal background while the second makes use of minimal boundary counterterms in the action necessary to render individual actions finite. The Euclidean actions are then utilised to determine the phase structure in arbitrary odd dimension; it is found that there is a Hawking-Page phase transition and also a phase transition between the black hole and soliton. There is found to be no smooth phase transition governed by an order parameter between AdS/$\mathbb{Z}_k$ and the soliton but nevertheless AdS/$\mathbb{Z}_k$ changes phase by tunneling to the lower energy soliton configuration.
In this contribution we describe some soliton based techniques for generating classical AdS string solutions. The methods introduced are useful for further understanding of rotating AdS configurations with spikes which correspond to higher twist operators in SYM theory. The main identification (accomplished in arXiv:0712.1193) between solitons and string spikes is reviewed and extended. We describe how inverse scattering technique can be applied for reconstructing AdS string configurations from soliton solutions of sinh-Gordon theory (in the example of ${\rm AdS}_3$).
We study the basic holographic insulator and superconductor phase transition in the AdS soliton background by generalizing the spontaneous breaking of a global U(1) symmetry to occur via St$\ddot{u}$ckelberg mechanism. We construct the soliton solutions with backreaction and examine the effects of the backreaction on the condensation of the scalar hair in the generalized St$\ddot{u}$ckelberg Lagrangian. We disclose rich physics in various phase transitions. In addition to the AdS soliton configuration, we also examine the property of the phase transition in the AdS black hole background.
We construct geons starting with gravitational perturbations of the AdS soliton. Previous studies of a charged scalar field in the soliton background showed a holographic insulator/superconductor transition at a critical chemical potential. We explore the possibility that dimensional reduction of the geon could model a transition to a d-wave superconductor. We find that although one does get a charged spin-2 condensate, it has higher free energy than the state without the condensate, so there is no phase transition.
We study both massive and massless particle's geodesic motion in the background of general dimensional AdS-Sol space-time. We find that the massive particles oscillate along the radial direction, while massless particles experience one-time bouncing as they approach the "horizon" line of the soliton. Our results provide a direct way to understand the negative energy/masses leading to the AdS-Sol geometry. As a potential application, we extend the point particle to a 3-brane and fix the background as a 5+1 dimension AdS-Sol, thus obtain a very natural bouncing/cyclic cosmological model.
We point out the existence of some simple string solitons in AdS_5 x S^5, which at the same time are spinning in AdS_5 and pulsating in S^5, or vice-versa. This introduces an additional arbitrary constant into the scaling relations between energy and spin or R-charge. The arbitrary constant is not an angular momentum, but can be related to the amplitude of the pulsation. We discuss the solutions in detail and consider the scaling relations. Pulsating multi spin or multi R-charge solutions can also be constructed.
We construct self-dual string soliton solutions in $AdS_4\times S^7$ spacetime, starting from the covariant equations of motion of M5-brane. We study the properties of the solutions and find that their action are linearized, indicating the BPS nature of the solutions, and they have the same electric and magnetic charge. The straight string soliton solution represents the configuration of the membranes ending on M5-brane with a straight string intersection, and it behaves like the spiky solution in flat spacetime. The spherical string soliton solution, which could be related to the straight one…
We investigate the holographic description of a superconductor constructed in the (2+1)-dimensional AdS soliton background in the probe limit. We study the holographic properties through both analytical and numerical methods. With analytical methods, we are the first to obtain the exact formula for critical phase transition points as $μ_{c}=1+\sqrt{1+m^2}$. Around the transition points, we find a correspondence between the value of the scalar field at the tip and the scalar operator at infinity. We also generalize the front properties to holographic models in higher dimensional AdS soliton spa…
It is known from the work in \cite{Lu:2007bu} of Lu et. al. that the non-supersymmetric charged D3-brane (with anisotropies in time as well as one of the spatial directions of D3-brane) of type IIB string theory is characterized by five independent parameters. By fixing one of the parameters and zooming into a particular region of space-time we construct a four parameter family of solution in AdS$_5$, which interpolates between AdS$_5$ black hole and AdS$_5$ soliton (when one of spatial directions in the Poincare coordinates is compact) by continuously changing the parameters (there is no need…
The AdS soliton is a nonsingular spacetime that has a flat conformal boundary with a compact $S^1$ direction. We find a horizonless cohomogeneity-1 metric that describes nonlinear gravitational oscillations of the AdS soliton in five dimensions. We call this spacetime the resonating AdS soliton. This solution is obtained as the nonlinear extension of normal modes of the AdS soliton dual to spin-2 glueball excitations. The boundary energy momentum tensor of the resonating AdS soliton has time periodic components, and it is interpreted as a coherently excited state in the dual field theory. Phys…
We examine the thermodynamics and stability of 5-dimensional flat anti-de Sitter (AdS) black strings, locally asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes whose spatial sections are AdS black holes with Ricci flat horizons. We find that there is a phase transition for the flat AdS black string when the AdS soliton string is chosen as the thermal background. We find that this bulk phase transition corresponds to a 4-dimensional flat AdS black hole to AdS soliton phase transition on the boundary Karch-Randall branes. We compute the possibility of a phase transition from a flat AdS black string to a …
A formalism is presented for computing the higher-order corrections to the worldvolume action of co-dimension one solitons. By modifying its potential, an explicit "kink" solution of a real scalar field in AdS spacetime is found. The formalism is then applied to explicitly compute the kink worldvolume action to quadratic order in two expansion parameters--associated with the hypersurface fluctuation length and the radius of AdS spacetime respectively. Two alternative methods are given for doing this. The results are expressed in terms of the trace of the extrinsic curvature and the intrinsic s…
In this paper we interpret the hidden symmetry of the moduli space of IIB superstring on $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$ in terms of the chiral embedding in $AdS_{5}$, which turns to be the $\mathbb{CP}^{3}$ conformal affine Toda model. We review how the position $μ$ of poles in the Riemann-Hilbert formulation of dressing transformation and how the value of loop parameters $μ$ in the vertex operator of affine algebra determines the moduli space of the soliton solutions, which describes the moduli space of the Green-Schwarz superstring. We show also how this affine SU(4) symmetry affinize the conformal s…
We study dual geometries to a deformed ABJM model with spatially dependent source functions at finite temperature. These source functions are proportional to the mass function $m(x)= m_0 \sin k x$ and its derivative $m'(x)$. As dual geometries, we find hairy black branes and AdS solitons corresponding to deconfinement phase and confining phase of the dual field theory, respectively. It turns out that the hairy AdS solitons have lower free energy than the black branes when the Hawking temperature is smaller than the confining scale. Therefore the dual system undergoes the first order phase tran…
We continue to study the holographic p-wave superconductor model in the Einstein-Maxwell-complex vector field theory with a non-minimal coupling between the complex vector field and the Maxwell field. In this paper we work in the AdS soliton background which describes a conformal field theory in the confined phase and focus on the probe approximation. We find that an applied magnetic field can lead to the condensate of the vector field and the AdS soliton instability. As a result, a vortex lattice structure forms in the spatial directions perpendicular to the applied magnetic field. As a compa…
We investigate the behaviors of holographic entanglement entropy for AdS soliton geometries in the presence of higher derivative corrections. We calculate the leading higher derivative corrections for the AdS5 setup in type IIB string and for the AdS4,7 ones in M-theory. We also study the holographic entanglement entropy in Gauss-Bonnet gravity and study how the confinement/deconfinement phase transition observed in AdS solitons is affected by the higher derivative corrections.
We use a mix of analytic and numerical methods to exhaustively study a class of asymptotically global AdS solitons and hairy black hole solutions in negative cosmological constant Einstein Maxwell gravity coupled to a charged massless scalar field. Our results depend sensitively on the charge 'e' of the scalar field. The solitonic branch of solutions we study hit the Chandrashekhar limit at finite mass at small 'e', but extends to arbitrarily large mass at larger 'e'. At low values of 'e' no hairy black holes exist. At intermediate values of 'e' hairy black holes exist above a critical charge.…
We construct supersymmetric, asymptotically AdS$_5$ gravitational soliton solutions of five-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to arbitrarily many vector multiplets. These generalize the supersymmetric solitons of $U(1)^3$ gauged supergravity previously constructed by Chong, Cvetic, Lu, and Pope. We show that the solitons contain evanescent ergosurfaces and give an argument that these solitons should be nonlinearly unstable.
We consider the four-dimensional Einstein-Klein-Gordon-AdS system with conformal mass subject to the Robin boundary conditions at infinity. Above a critical value of the Robin parameter, at which the AdS spacetime goes linearly unstable, we prove existence of a family of globally regular static solutions (that we call AdS Robin solitons) and discuss their properties.
We find new explicit solutions describing closed strings spinning with equal angular momentum in two independent planes in AdS(5). These are 2N-folded strings in the radial direction and also winding M times around an angular direction. Thus in spacetime they consist of 2N segments. Solutions fulfilling the closed string periodicity conditions exist provided N/M>2, i.e. the strings must be folded at least six times in the radial coordinate. The strings are spinning, or actually orbiting, similarly to solutions found previously in black hole spacetimes, but unlike the one-spin solutions in AdS …
We construct exact hairy AdS soliton solutions in Einstein-dilaton gravity theory. We examine their thermodynamic properties and discuss the role of these solutions for the existence of first order phase transitions for hairy black holes. The negative energy density associated to hairy AdS solitons can be interpreted as the Casimir energy that is generated in the dual filed theory when the fermions are antiperiodic on the compact coordinate.
We study the gravitational field of a spinning radiation beam-pulse (a gyraton) in a D-dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetime. It is shown that the Einstein equations for such a system reduce to a set of two linear equations in a (D-2)-dimensional space. By solving these equations we obtain a metric which is an exact solution of gravitational equations with the (negative) cosmological constant. The explicit metrics for 4D and 5D gyratons in asymptotically AdS spacetime are given and their properties are discussed.
In this paper, we considered new solutions for four-dimensional asymptotically AdS black holes with scalar hair and discuss about Hawking temperature in the context of dark energy by using the tunneling method. We obtain modification of the Hawking temperature due to presence of the dark energy.
We present a family of $AdS_{2+1}$ asymptotically hairy black holes, within the context of Einstein's minimally coupled scalar field theory. We study the boundary conditions and construct the thermal superpotential. In the Euclidean section, we calculate the free energy and in the Lorentzian section, the Brown-York tensor, both regularized by two methods. Finally, we calculate the relevant thermodynamic quantities and analyze the different phases.
We derive and analyse, analytically and numerically, the equations for perturbations around the pulsating two-spin string soliton in AdS(5) x S(5).We show that the pulsation in S(5) indeed improves the stability properties of the two-spin string soliton in AdS(5), in the sense that the more pulsation we have, the higher spin we can allow and still have stability.
We consider the holographic complexity conjectures in the context of the AdS soliton, which is the holographic dual of the ground state of a field theory on a torus with antiperiodic boundary conditions for fermions on one cycle. The complexity is a non-trivial function of the size of the circle with antiperiodic boundary conditions, which sets an IR scale in the dual geometry. We find qualitative differences between the calculations of complexity from spatial volume and action (CV and CA). In the CV calculation, the complexity for antiperiodic boundary conditions is smaller than for periodic,…
In this work we study the phase transitions between the planar charged AdS black hole and the planar charged soliton. The planar soliton is obtained as a double analytic continuation of the charged black hole metric, which also involves analytically continuing the electric charge. We show that there are phase transitions between both solutions depending on the electric potential, magnetic flux and temperature. The analysis is carried out in the Grand-Canonical ensemble.
We discuss two types of instabilities which may arise in string theory compactified to asymptotically AdS spaces: perturbative, due to discrete modes in the spectrum of the Laplacian, and non-perturbative, due to brane nucleation. In the case of three dimensional Einstein manifolds, we completely characterize the presence of these instabilities, and in higher dimensions we provide a partial classification. The analysis may be viewed as an extension of the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. One interesting result is that, apart from a very special class of exceptions, all Euclidean asymptotically Ad…
We discuss electrostatics in Anti-de-Sitter ($AdS$) spacetime, in global coordinates. We observe that the multipolar expansion has two crucial differences to that in Minkowski spacetime. First, there are everywhere regular solutions, with finite energy, for every multipole moment except for the monopole. Second, all multipole moments decay with the same inverse power of the areal radius, $1/r$, as spatial infinity is approached. The first observation suggests there may be regular, self-gravitating, Einstein-Maxwell solitons in $AdS$ spacetime. The second observation, renders a Lichnerowicz-typ…
We construct new static, asymptotically AdS solutions where the conformal infinity is the product of Minkowski spacetime $M_n$ and a sphere $S^m$. Both globally regular, soliton-type solutions and black hole solutions are considered. The black holes can be viewed as natural AdS generalizations of the Schwarzschild black branes in Kaluza-Klein theory. The solitons provide new brane-world models with compact extra-dimensions. Different from the Randall-Sundrum single-brane scenario, a Schwarzschild black hole on the Ricci flat part of these branes does not lead to a naked singularity in the bulk…
In this paper, we reconsider the energy and tension laws of the Ricci flat black hole by taking the contribution of the tension term into account. After this considering and inspired by the interchange symmetry between the Ricci flat black hole and the AdS soliton solution which arises from the double analytic continuation of the time and compact spatial direction, we find out the analogy of the energy and tension laws of the AdS soliton solution. Moreover, we also investigate the energy and tension laws of the boosted Ricci flat black hole, and discuss the boosted AdS soliton solution. Howeve…
We construct a general class of solutions for a classical string in AdS_3 spacetime. The construction is based on a Pohlmeyer type reduction, with the sinh-Gordon model providing the general N-soliton solutions. The corresponding exact spiky string configurations are then reconstructed through the inverse scattering method. It is shown that the string moduli are determined entirely by those of the solitons.
We investigate the marginally stable modes of the scalar (vector) perturbations in the AdS soliton background coupled to electric field. In the probe limit, we find that the marginally stable modes can reveal the onset of the phase transitions of this model. The critical chemical potentials obtained from this approach are in good agreement with the previous numerical or analytical results.
We explore the behaviour of charged scalar solitons in asymptotically global AdS4 spacetimes. This is motivated in part by attempting to identify under what circumstances such objects can become large relative to the AdS length scale. We demonstrate that such solitons generically do get large and in fact in the planar limit smoothly connect up with the zero temperature limit of planar scalar hair black holes. In particular, for given Lagrangian parameters we encounter multiple branches of solitons: some which are perturbatively connected to the AdS vacuum and surprisingly, some which are not. …
We extend a well-known D-brane construction of the AdS/dCFT correspondence to non-abelian defects. We focus on the bulk side of the correspondence and show that there exists a regime of parameters in which the low-energy description consists of two approximately decoupled sectors. The two sectors are gravity in the ambient spacetime, and a six-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The Yang-Mills theory is defined on a rigid AdS_4 x S^2 background and admits sixteen supersymmetries. We also consider a one-parameter deformation that gives rise to a family of Yang-Mills theories on asympt…
We consider singularity theorems in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes. In the first part, we discuss the global methods used to show geodesic incompleteness and see that when the conditions imposed in Hawking and Penrose's singularity theorem are satisfied, a singularity must appear in asymptotically AdS spacetime. The recent observations of turbulent instability of asymptotically AdS spacetimes indicate that AdS spacetimes are generically singular even if a closed trapped surface, which is one of the main conditions of the Hawking and Penrose theorem, does not exist in the initia…
We show that in D=2n+1 dimensions, when mass is negative and all angular momenta are non-vanishing, Kerr and Kerr-AdS metrics describe smooth time machines, with no curvature singularity. Turning off the angular momenta appropriately can lead to static AdS solitons with negative mass. Setting zero the cosmological constant yields a class of Ricci-flat Kähler metrics in D=2n dimensions. We also show that Euclidean-signatured AdS solitons with negative mass can also arise in odd dimensions. We then construct time machines in D=5 minimal gauged supergravity that carry only magnetic dipole charges…
We analytically study the holographic superfluid phase transition in the AdS soliton background by using the variational method for the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem. By investigating the holographic s-wave and p-wave superfluid models in the probe limit, we observe that the spatial component of the gauge field will hinder the phase transition. Moreover, we note that, different from the AdS black hole spacetime, in the AdS soliton background the holographic superfluid phase transition always belongs to the second order and the critical exponent of the system takes the mean-field value in …
We use a Pohlmeyer type reduction to generate classical string solutions in AdS spacetime. In this framework we describe a correspondence between spikes in AdS_3 and soliton profiles of the sinh-Gordon equation. The null cusp string solution and its closed spinning string counterpart are related to the sinh-Gordon vacuum. We construct classical string solutions corresponding to sinh-Gordon solitons, antisolitons and breathers by the inverse scattering technique. The breather solutions can also be reproduced by the sigma model dressing method.
Minimal $D=5$ supergravity admits asymptotically globally AdS$_5$ gravitational solitons (strictly stationary, geodesically complete spacetimes with positive mass). We show that, like asymptotically flat gravitational solitons, these solutions satisfy mass and mass variation formulas analogous to those satisfied by AdS black holes. A thermodynamic volume associated to the non-trivial topology of the spacetime plays an important role in this construction. We then consider these solitons within the holographic ``complexity equals action'' and ``complexity equals volume'' conjectures as simple ex…
From the Polyakov string action using a conformal gauge we construct a three-spin giant magnon solution describing a long open string in AdS_5 \times S^5 which rotates both in two angular directions of S^5 and in one angular direction of AdS_5. Through the Virasoro constraints the string motion in AdS_5 takes an effect from the string configuration in S^5. The dispersion relation of the soliton solution is obtained as a superposition of two bound states of magnons. We show that there is a correspondence between a special giant magnon in AdS_2 and the sinh-Gordon soliton.
Recently, it has been conjectured that supergravity solutions with two asymptotically AdS regions describe the RG flow of a 4-d field theory from a UV fixed point to an interacting IR fixed point. In this paper we lend support to this conjecture by showing that, in the UV (IR) limit, the two-point function of a minimally-coupled scalar field depends only on the UV (IR) region of the metric, asymptotic to AdS_5. This result is consistent with the interpretation of the radial coordinate of Anti de Sitter space as an energy scale, and it may provide an analog of the Callan-Symanzik equation for s…
We find soliton solutions in five-dimensional gauged supergravity, where a circle degenerates smoothly in the core of the geometry. In the family of solutions we consider, we find no completely smooth supersymmetric solutions, but we find discrete families of non-supersymmetric solitons. We discuss the relation to previous studies of the asymptotically flat case. We also consider gauged supergravities in four and seven dimensions, but fail to find any smooth solutions.
We present a calculation of two-point correlation functions of the stress-energy tensor in the strongly-coupled, confining gauge theory which is holographically dual to the AdS soliton geometry. The fact that the AdS soliton smoothly caps off at a certain point along the holographic direction, ensures that these correlators are dominated by quasinormal mode contributions and thus show an exponential decay in position space. In order to study such a field theory on a curved spacetime, we foliate the six-dimensional AdS soliton with a Schwarzschild black hole. Via gauge/gravity duality, this new…
We construct a new class of Einstein-Maxwell static solutions with a magnetic field in $D$-dimensions (with $D\geq 5$ an odd number), approaching at infinity a globally Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. In addition to the mass, the new solutions possess an extra-parameter associated with a non-zero magnitude of the magnetic potential at infinity. Some of the black holes possess a non-trivial zero-horizon size limit, which corresponds to a solitonic deformation of the AdS background.
We first review how asymptotically Schrödinger space-times arise in a natural way by performing a TsT transformation on asymptotically AdS space-times and some of its consequences. We then give a coordinate independent definition of a pure Schrödinger space-time in terms of an AdS metric and an AdS null Killing vector. Then, by analogy with the AdS case, we provide a local and coordinate independent definition of a Schrödinger boundary in terms of a defining function. We use this to construct the Fefferman-Graham expansions of locally Schrödinger space-times.
We consider the refinement of the holographic entanglement entropy for the holographic dual theories to the AdS solitons and AdS black holes, including the corrected ones by the Gauss-Bonnet term. The refinement is obtained by extracting the UV-independent piece of the holographic entanglement entropy, the so-called renormalized entanglement entropy which is independent of the choices of UV cutoff. Our main results are (i) the renormalized entanglement entropies of the AdS$_{d+1}$ soliton for $d=4,5$ are neither monotonically decreasing along the RG flow nor positive definite, especially aroun…
We propose a new $AdS_3/CFT_2$ duality, in which the bulk string theory has a target spacetime $AdS_3$ times a squashed three-sphere $S^3_\flat$, and the dual $CFT_2$ is a symmetric product of sigma models on $R_ϕ\times S^3_\flat$, deformed by a $ϕ$-dependent $Z_2$ twist operator. The duality maps the asymptotic region of $AdS_3$ to the region $ϕ\to\infty$, where the twist interaction in the $CFT_2$ turns off. The $AdS_3$ backgrounds in question have $R_{AdS}<\ell_s$, and so lie on the string side of the string/black hole correspondence transition. As a consequence, the high energy density of …
We investigate the properties of spherically symmetric black hole solutions in the generalized Einstein-Skyrme model theory in four-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-time. The dependencies of the Skyrmion fields on the cosmological constant and on the strength of the effective gravitational coupling are examined. We show that the increase of the absolute value of the cosmological constant qualitatively yields the same effect as increasing of the effective gravitational coupling. We confirm that, similar to the model in the asymptotically flat space-time, a necessary condition for…
We investigate static, planar, solutions of Einstein-scalar gravity admitting an anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacuum. When the squared mass of the scalar field is positive and the scalar potential can be derived from a superpotential, minimum energy theorems indicate the existence of a scalar soliton. On the other hand, for these models, no-hair theorems forbid the existence of hairy black brane solutions with AdS asymptotics. By considering a specific example (an exact integrable model which has the form of a Toda molecule) and by deriving explicit exact solution, we show that these models allow for …
We apply a physical principle, previously used to eliminate ambiguities in quantum corrections to the 2 dimensional kink, to the case of spinning strings moving in $AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$, thought of as another kind of two dimensional soliton. We find that this eliminates the ambiguities and selects the result compatible with AdS/CFT, providing a solid foundation for one of the previous calculations, which found agreement. The method can be applied to other classical string "solitons".
Chiral gravity admits asymptotically AdS3 solutions that are not locally equivalent to AdS3; meaning that solutions do exist which, while obeying the strong boundary conditions usually imposed in General Relativity, happen not to be Einstein spaces. In Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG), the existence of non-Einstein solutions is particularly connected to the question about the role played by complex saddle points in the Euclidean path integral. Consequently, studying (the existence of) non-locally AdS3 solutions to chiral gravity is relevant to understand the quantum theory. Here, we discuss…
We investigate the conditions for obtaining four-dimensional massless spin-2 states in the spectrum of fluctuations around an asymptotically $AdS_5$ solution of Einstein-Dilaton gravity. We find it is only possible to have normalizable massless spin-2 modes if the space-time terminates at some IR point in the extra dimension, far from the UV AdS boundary, and if suitable boundary conditions are imposed at the ``end of space.'' In some of these cases the 4D spectrum consists only of a massless spin-2 graviton, with no additional massless or light scalar or vector modes. These spin-2 modes have …
