Surface structures on radio-frequency (RF) superconductors are crucially important in determining their interaction with the RF field. Here we investigate the surface compositions, structural profiles, and valence distributions of oxides, carbides, and impurities on niobium (Nb) and niobium-tin (Nb3Sn) in situ under different processing conditions. We establish the underlying mechanisms of vacuum baking and nitrogen processing in Nb and demonstrate that carbide formation induced during high-temperature baking, regardless of gas environment, determines subsequent oxide formation upon air exposure or low-temperature baking, leading to modifications of the electron population profile. Our findings support the combined contribution of surface oxides and second-phase formation to the outcome of ultra-high vacuum baking (oxygen processing) and nitrogen processing. Also, we observe that vapor-diffused Nb3Sn contains thick metastable oxides, while electrochemically synthesized Nb3Sn only has a thin oxide layer. Our findings reveal fundamental mechanisms of baking and processing Nb and Nb3Sn surface structures for high-performance superconducting RF and quantum applications
On highly oxygen deficient thin films of hafnium oxide (hafnia, HfO$_{2-x}$) contaminated with adsorbates of carbon oxides, the formation of hafnium carbide (HfC$_x$) at the surface during vacuum annealing at temperatures as low as 600 °C is reported. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy the evolution of the HfC$_x$ surface layer related to a transformation from insulating into metallic state is monitored in situ. In contrast, for fully stoichiometric HfO$_2$ thin films prepared and measured under identical conditions, the formation of HfC$_x$ was not detectable suggesting that the enhanced …
We have performed density functional calculations of the formation energies of substitutional transition metal (TM) defects, C vacancies, and C interstitial defects in TiC. In addition we have evaluated the migration energy barriers for C atoms in the presence of TM impurities. We find that the solubility of TM impurities taken from the 3d TM series is low and only Sc and V impurities can be dissolved into TiC at equilibrium. In addition, we find that the migration energy barriers of C in TiC are greatly affected by the presence of TM impurities: The migration barriers are generally lower in t…
Four anti-perovskite-type compounds, ZnNNi3, ZnCNi3, SnNCo3, and SnCCo3, are synthesised through reactions between ingredient metal oxides and organic compound melamine (C3H6N6). ZnNNi3 and ZnCNi3 are selectively synthesised by choosing different reaction temperatures and nominal oxide-to-melamine ratios. SnNCo3 is synthesised for the first time by this melamine method. Resistivity, magnetisation, and heat capacity measurements reveal that SnNCo3 is a correlated metal with a high density of states at the Fermi level. Our results demonstrate that this feasible synthetic route using melamine is …
We determined the interface state density ($D_{\rm it}$) distributions in the vicinity of the conduction band edge in silicon carbide (SiC) metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structures by reproducing the experimental current-voltage characteristics of MOS field effect transistors (MOSFETs) with numerical calculations. In the calculation, potential distributions and energy sub-bands in the inversion layer were calculated by solving Poisson and Schrödinger equations, respectively. We demonstrate that gate characteristics of the MOSFETs are well described by considering that the interface states ar…
We investigate nanoscale local anodic oxidation (LAO) on hydrogen-intercalated graphene grown by controlled sublimation of silicon carbide (SiC). Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) was used as a lithographic and characterization tool in order to investigate the local properties of the nanofabricated structures. The anomalous thickness observed after the graphene oxidation process is linked to the impact of LAO on the substrate. Micro-Raman spectroscopy was employed to demonstrate the presence of two oxidation regimes depending on the applied bias. We show that partial and total etching of monolay…
We report an ab-initio comparative study of the electric-field-gradient tensor (EFG) and structural relaxations introduced by acceptor (Cd) and donor (Ta) impurities when they replace cations in a series of binary oxides: TiO2, SnO2, and In2O3. Calculations were performed with the Full-Potential Linearized-Augmented Plane Waves method that allows us to treat the electronic structure and the atomic relaxations in a fully self-consistent way. We considered different charge states for each impurity and studied the dependence on these charge states of the electronic properties and the structural r…
We report a method to obtain insights into lower thermal conductivity of β-Ga2O3 thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on c-plane sapphire and 4H-SiC substrates. We compare experimental values against the numerical predictions to decipher the effect of boundary scattering and defects in thin-films. We used time domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) to perform the experiments, density functional theory and the Boltzmann transport equation for thermal conductivity calculations, and the diffuse mismatch model for TBC predictions. The experimental thermal conductivities were approximately 3 t…
We study the optical properties of tetravalent vanadium impurities in 4H silicon carbide (4H SiC). Emission from two crystalline sites is observed at wavelengths of 1.28 \mum and 1.33 \mum, with optical lifetimes of 163 ns and 43 ns. Group theory and ab initio density functional supercell calculations enable unequivocal site assignment and shed light on the spectral features of the defects. We conclude with a brief outlook on applications in quantum photonics.
We present a study of mechanical, electronic and magnetic properties of two dimensional (2D), monolayer of silicon carbide (SiC) in honeycomb structure and its quasi 1D armchair nanoribbons using first-principles plane wave method. In order to reveal dimensionality effects, a brief study of 3D bulk and 1D atomic chain of SiC are also included. Calculated bond-lengths, cohesive energies, charge transfers and band gaps display a clear dimensionality effect. The stability analysis based on the calculation of phonon frequencies indicates that 2D SiC monolayer is stable in planar geometry. We found…
Effects of doping on morphology of iron carbide (cementite) nanowires have been explored by first principle electronic structure calculations. We examined the role of several realistic impurities (Si, Mn, V, P and S) in the formation energies of the cementite nanowires with different sizes and morphologies. It is shown that the presence of the impurities decreases the formation energy and can switch the preferable axis of the cementite nanowire growth. The conditions of the formation and decomposition of cementite nanowires in steels are also discussed.
We perform a theoretical study of the magnetism induced in transition metal dioxides ZrO2 and TiO2 by substitution of the cation by a vacancy or an impurity from the groups 1A or 2A of the periodic table, where the impurity is either K or Ca. In the present study both supercell and embedded cluster methods are used. It is demonstrated that the vacancy and the K-impurity leads to a robust induced magnetic moment on the surrounding O-atoms for both the cubic ZrO2 and rutile TiO2 host crystals. On the other hand it is shown that Ca-impurity leads to a non magnetic state. The native O-vacancy does…
Chemical oxidation of multilayer graphene grown on silicon carbide yields films exhibiting reproducible characteristics, lateral uniformity, smoothness over large areas, and manageable chemical complexity, thereby opening opportunities to accelerate both fundamental understanding and technological applications of this form of graphene oxide films. Here, we investigate the vertical inter-layer structure of these ultra-thin oxide films. X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and IR experiments show that the multilayer films exhibit excellent inter-layer registry, little amount (<10%) of int…
The electronic properties of lanthanide (from Eu to Tm) impurities in wurtzite gallium nitride and zinc oxide were investigated by first principles calculations, using an all electron methodology plus a Hubbard potential correction. The results indicated that the 4f-related energy levels remain outside the bandgap in both materials, in good agreement with a recent phenomenological model, based on experimental data. Additionally, zinc oxide doped with lanthanide impurities became an n-type material, showing a coupling between the 4f-related spin polarized states and the carriers. This coupling …
Silicon carbide silicon carbide (SiC SiC) composites are often used in oxidizing environments at high temperatures. Measurements of the thermal conductance of the oxide layer provide a way to better understand the oxidation process with high spatial resolution. We use time domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) to map the thermal conductance of the oxide layer and the thermal conductivity of the SiC SiC composite with a spatial resolution of 3 μm. Heterodyne detection using a 50 kHz modulated probe beam and a 10 MHz modulated pump suppresses the coherent pick-up and enables faster data acquisition th…
Ferropericlase (Mg,Fe)O is a major lower mantle mineral, and studying its properties is a fundamental step toward understanding the Earth's interior. Here, we performed a first-principles investigation on the properties of iron as an isolated impurity in magnesium oxide, which is the condition of ferropericlase under which iron-iron interactions could be neglected. The calculations were carried using the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method within the density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation plus the on-site Hubbard correction. We presen…
We have investigated the formation of tungsten oxide nanowires under different CVD conditions. We find that exposure of oxidized tungsten films to hydrogen and methane at 900C leads to the formation of a dense array of typically 10 nm diameter nanowires. Structural and chemical analysis shows that the wires are crystalline WO3. We propose a chemically-driven whisker growth mechanism in which interfacial strain associated with the formation of tungsten carbide stimulates nanowire growth. This might be a general concept, applicable also in other nanowire systems.
We compare the effective spin-orbital super\-exchange triggered by magnetic $3d$ impurities with $d^3$ and $d^2$ configurations and either no orbital degree of freedom (orbital dilution) or hole replacing a doublon (charge dilution) in a $4d^4$ Mott insulator with $S=1$ spins. Impurities causing orbital dilution act either as spin defects decoupled from the surrounding ions, or generate orbital polarons along $d^3$-$d^4$ hybrid bonds. The exchange on these bonds determines which orbital is occupied by a doublon on the host site. In case of charge dilution by $3d^2$ impurities additional $\prop…
Synaptic devices with linear high-speed switching can accelerate learning in artificial neural networks (ANNs) embodied in hardware. Conventional resistive memories however suffer from high write noise and asymmetric conductance tuning, preventing parallel programming of ANN arrays as needed to surpass conventional computing efficiency. Electrochemical random-access memories (ECRAMs), where resistive switching occurs by ion insertion into a redox-active channel address these challenges due to their linear switching and low noise. ECRAMs using two-dimensional (2D) materials and metal oxides suf…
Doping lithium-ion battery electrode materials LiMO$_2$ (M = Co, Ni, Mn) with impurities has been shown to be an effective way to optimize their electrochemical properties. Here, we report a detailed first-principles study of layered oxides LiCoO$_2$, LiNiO$_2$, and LiMnO$_2$ lightly doped with transition-metal (Fe, Co, Ni, Mn) and non-transition-metal (Mg, Al) impurities using hybrid-density-functional defect calculations. We find that the lattice site preference is dependent on both the dopant's charge and spin states, which are coupled strongly to the local lattice environment and can be af…
The prospects of half-metallic ferromagnetism being induced by the incorporation of C atoms into alkaline-earth-metal-oxides are investigated by the first principle calculation. The origin of the ferromagnetism is discussed through the calculation of the electronic structure and exchange coupling constant by using the pseudo-potential-like self-interaction-corrected local spin density method. The Curie temperature ($T_c$) is also predicted by employing the Monte Carlo simulation. It is shown that by taking the electron self-interaction into account, the half-metallic ferromagnetism induced by …
Pulsed cathodoluminescence (PCL) spectra of ultra-pure SiO2, GeO2, SnO2, TiO2, La2O3, Y2O3, Sc2O3, CaCO3 powders and α-quartz, Ca:YVO4, LiNbO3 and Sc:LiNbO3 crystals were studied under the same experimental conditions. It was found that PCL spectra of SiO2, SnO2, GeO2, TiO2, La2O3 and CaCO3 powders contain a common band with maximum intensity at 500 nm, PCL spectra of samples Y2O3, Sc2O3, PbWO4 and Ca:YVO4 contain a common band at 490 nm and PCL spectra of LiNbO3 and Sc:LiNbO3 crystals contain a common band at 507 nm. It was found that the average intensity of the PCL spectra and position of t…
A density functional theory study of substitutional carbon impurities in ZnO has been performed, using both the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and a hybrid functional (HSE06) as exchange-correlation functional. It is found that the non-spinpolarized C$_\mathrm{Zn}$ impurity is under almost all conditions thermodynamically more stable than the C$_\mathrm{O}$ impurity which has a magnetic moment of $2μ_{\mathrm{B}}$, with the exception of very O-poor and C-rich conditions. This explains the experimental difficulties in sample preparation in order to realize $d^{0}$-ferromagnetism in C-…
Motivated by the problem of the residual surface resistance of the superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities, we develop a microscopic theory of the surface impedance of s-wave superconductors with magnetic impurities. We analytically calculate the current response function and surface impedance for a sample with spatially uniform distribution of impurities, treating magnetic impurities in the framework of the Shiba theory. The obtained general expressions hold in a wide range of parameter values, such as temperature, frequency, mean free path, and exchange coupling strength. This general…
A series of dual-phase high-entropy ultrahigh temperature ceramics (DPHE-UHTCs) are fabricated starting from N binary borides and (5-N) binary carbides powders. >~99% relative densities have been achieved with virtually no native oxides. These DPHE-UHTCs consist of a hexagonal high-entropy boride (HEB) phase and a cubic high-entropy carbide (HEC) phase. A thermodynamic relation that governs the compositions of the HEB and HEC phases in equilibrium is discovered and a thermodynamic model is proposed. These DPHE-UHTCs exhibit tunable grain size, Vickers microhardness, Young' and shear moduli, an…
High entropy materials, which include high entropy alloys, carbides, and borides, are a topic of substantial research interest due to the possibility of a large number of new material compositions that could fill gaps in application needs. There is a current need for materials exhibiting high temperature stability, particularly oxidation resistance. A systematic understanding of the oxidation behavior in high entropy materials is therefore required. Prior work notes large differences in the thermodynamic favorability between oxides formed upon oxidation of high entropy materials. This work use…
Nanocrystalline materials are well known for their beneficial mechanical and physical properties. However, it is of utmost importance to stabilize the microstructure at elevated temperatures to broaden the window of application e.g. by pinning grain boundaries through impurities or oxides. CuCo alloys, severe plastically deformed using high-pressure torsion, were used to investigate the evolution of oxides upon annealing. These investigations were performed using electron microscopy, synchrotron high-energy X-ray scattering and atom probe tomography. Monitoring the evolution of oxides by in-si…
We have studied the segregation of P and B impurities during oxidation of the Si(100) surface by means of combined static and dynamical first-principles simulations based on density functional theory. In the bare surface, dopants segregate to chemically stable surface sites or to locally compressed subsurface sites. Surface oxidation is accompanied by development of tensile surface stress up to 2.9 N/m at a coverage of 1.5 monolayers of oxygen and by formation of oxidised Si species with charges increasing approximately linearly with the number of neighbouring oxygen atoms. Substitutional P an…
Cupric oxide is multiferroic at unusual high temperatures. From density functional calculations we find that the low-T magnetic phase is paraelectric and the higher-T one ferroelectric, with a size and direction of polarization in good agreement with experiment. By mapping of the ab initio results on an effective spin model we find with Monte Carlo that in the high-T magnetic state non-collinearity and inversion symmetry breaking stabilize each other via the Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction. This leads to a novel mechanism for multiferroicity, with the particular property that non-magnetic im…
Atom probe tomography (APT) analysis of chemically pure nanofilms of zero-valent iron (Fe(0), or ZVI) and their thermal oxide nano-overlayers reveals the presence of dendritic iron oxide features that extend from the oxide nano-overlayer surface into the ZVI bulk. The dendrites are observed by APT to be in the 5 nm x 10 nm size range and form quickly under natural atmospheric conditions. Their growth into the ZVI lalyer is, within the limit of our three-month long study, self-limiting (i.e. their initial growth appears to quickly discontinue). The atomistic views presented here shed first ligh…
Using ab-initio calculations within the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT), atomic structures and electronic properties of MoS2/HfO2 interface are investigated. The impact of interfacial oxygen concentration on the MoS2/HfO2 interface electronic structure is examined in order to mimic the atomic layer deposition growth at ambient conditions. Then, the effect on band offsets and the thermodynamic stability of those interfaces is investigated and compared with available relevant experimental data. These results seem to indicate that, for a well-prepared interface, the electronic device…
Fulfillment of the promise of transparent electronics has been hindered until now largely by the lack of semiconductors that can be doped p-type in a stable way, and that at the same time present high hole mobility and are highly transparent in the visible spectrum. Here, a high-throughput study based on first-principles methods reveals four oxides, namely X2SeO2, with X = La, Pr, Nd, and Gd, which are unique in that they exhibit excellent characteristics for transparent electronic device applications-i.e., a direct band gap larger than 3.1 eV, an average hole effective mass below the electron…
We investigated the influence of vacuum annealing on interface properties of silicon carbide (SiC) metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structures. For as-oxidized and nitric oxide (NO)-annealed samples, the interface state density ($D_{\rm it}$) near the conduction band edge ($E_{\rm C}$) of SiC did not increase by subsequent vacuum annealing. For phosphoryl chloride (POCl$_3$)-annealed samples, in contrast, $D_{\rm it}$ at $E_{\rm C}-0.2$ eV increased from $1.3\times10^{10}$ to $2.2\times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$eV$^{-1}$ by the vacuum annealing, and the channel mobility of MOS field effect transistors …
SrMoO$_3$ is a promising material for its excellent electrical conductivity, but growing high-quality thin films remains a challenge. Here we synthesized epitaxial films of SrMoO$_3$ using the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) technique under a low oxygen-flow rate. Introduction of SrTiO$_3$ buffer layers of 4--8 unit cells between the film and the (001)-oriented SrTiO$_3$ or KTaO$_3$ substrate was crucial to remove impurities and/or roughness of the film surface. The obtained film shows improved electrical conductivities as compared with films obtained by other techniques. The high quality of the …
Ultra-high-temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are optimal structural materials for applications that require extreme temperature resilience, resistance to chemically aggressive environments, wear, and mechanical stress. Processing UHTCs with laser-based additive manufacturing (AM) has not been fully realized due to a variety of obstacles. In this work, selective laser reaction sintering (SLRS) techniques were investigated for the production of near net-shape UHTC ceramics such as HfC, ZrC, TiC, HfN, ZrN, and TiN. Group IV transition metal and metal oxide precursor materials were chemically converted…
The performance of Superconducting radio frequency cavities (SRF) is strongly influenced by various impurities within the penetration depth (~50nm) of Nb, which in turn depends on the applied surface treatments. The effect of these surface treatments on the impurities of Nb has been explored using various surface analytical treatments. But, the results are still inadequate in many aspects and the effect of sequential SRF treatments on the impurity distribution has not been explored. The present study analyses various impurities within the penetration depth of Nb samples, treated by SRF cavity …

Qubits made from superconducting materials are a mature platform for quantum information science application such as quantum computing. However, materials-based losses are now a limiting factor in reaching the coherence times needed for applications. In particular, knowledge of the atomistic structure and properties of the circuit materials is needed to identify, understand, and mitigate materials-based decoherence channels. In this work we characterize the atomic structure of the native oxide film formed on Nb resonators by comparing fluctuation electron microscopy experiments to density func…
Hematite $α-Fe_{2}O_{3}(0001)$ is the most-investigated iron oxide model system in photo and electrocatalytic research. The rich chemistry of Fe and O allows for many bulk and surface transformations, but their control is challenging. This has led to controversies regarding the structure of the topmost layers. This comprehensive study combines surface methods (nc-AFM, STM, LEED, and XPS) complemented by structural and chemical analysis of the near-surface bulk (HRTEM and EELS). The results show that a compact 2D layer constitutes the topmost surface of $α-Fe_{2}O_{3}(0001)$; it is locally corr…
Graphene-oxide hybrid structures offer the opportunity to combine the versatile functionalities of oxides with the excellent electronic transport in graphene. Understanding and controlling how the dielectric environment affects the intrinsic properties of graphene is also critical to fundamental studies and technological development of graphene. Graphene field effect devices prepared on high-quality single crystal PZT substrates exhibit up to…
Oxide scale formed on the surface of steel products during high-teperature processes is studied as a composite material, the main solid components of which, in general, are wustite, magnetite, hematite and metallic iron. To estimate the density of each of these components in the temperature range from 0 C to 1300 C, formulas are proposed that are consistent with the empirical functions of the coefficient of linear thermal expansion, which the authors obtained earlier by generaizing data from open sources. The Curie and polymorphic transformation temperatures are included in these generalized f…
Soft-X-ray ARPES (SX-ARPES) with its enhanced probing depth and chemical specificity allows access to fundamental electronic structure characteristics - momentum-resolved spectral function, band structure, Fermi surface - of systems difficult and even impossible for the conventional ARPES such as three-dimensional materials, buried interfaces and impurities. After a recap of the spectroscopic abilities of SX-ARPES, we review its applications to oxide interfaces, focusing on the paradigm LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interface. Resonant SX-ARPES at the Ti L-edge accentuates photoemission response of the mobile…
