A series of dual-phase high-entropy ultrahigh temperature ceramics (DPHE-UHTCs) are fabricated starting from N binary borides and (5-N) binary carbides powders. >~99% relative densities have been achieved with virtually no native oxides. These DPHE-UHTCs consist of a hexagonal high-entropy boride (HEB) phase and a cubic high-entropy carbide (HEC) phase. A thermodynamic relation that governs the compositions of the HEB and HEC phases in equilibrium is discovered and a thermodynamic model is proposed. These DPHE-UHTCs exhibit tunable grain size, Vickers microhardness, Young' and shear moduli, and thermal conductivity. The DPHE-UHTCs have higher hardness than the weighted linear average of the two single-phase HEB and HEC, which are already harder than the rule-of-mixture averages of individual binary borides and carbides. This study extends the state of the art by introducing dual-phase high-entropy ceramics (DPHECs), which provide a new platform to tailor various properties via changing the phase fraction and microstructure.
High-entropy ceramics (HECs) have quickly gained attention since 2015. To date, nearly all work has focused on five-component, equimolar compositions. This perspective article briefly reviews different families of HECs and selected properties. Following a couple of our most recent studies, we propose a step forward to expand HECs to Compositionally Complex ceramics (CCCs) to include medium-entropy and non-equimolar compositions. Using defective fluorite and ordered pyrochlore oxides as two primary examples, we further consider the complexities of aliovalent cations and anion vacancies as well …
Using fluorite oxides as an example, this study broadens high-entropy ceramics (HECs) to compositionally-complex ceramics (CCCs) or multi-principal cation ceramics (MPCCs) to include medium-entropy and/or non-equimolar compositions. Nine compositions of compositionally-complex fluorite oxides (CCFOs) with the general formula of (Hf1/3Zr1/3Ce1/3)1-x(Y1/2X1/2)xO2-delta (X = Yb, Ca, and Gd; x = 0.4, 0.148, and 0.058) are fabricated. The phase stability, mechanical properties, and thermal conductivities are measured. Compared with yttria-stabilized zirconia, these CCFOs exhibit increased cubic pha…
Ceramics are easy to break, and very few generic mechanisms are available for improving their mechanical properties, e.g., the 1975-discovered anti-fracture mechanism is strictly limited to zirconia and hafnia. Here we report a general mechanism for achieving high plasticity through liquefaction of ceramics. We further disclose the general material design strategies to achieve this difficult task through entropy-boosted amorphous ceramics (EBACs), enabling fracture-resistant properties that can withstand severe plastic deformation (e.g., over 95%, deformed to a thickness of a few nanometers) w…
This invited talk will review a series of our recent studies on high-entropy ceramics (HECs) and compositionally complex ceramics (CCCs) and discuss the future perspective. Various single-phase equimolar quinary (five-component) HECs, e.g., MB2, MB, M3B4, MB4, and MB6 borides, MSi2 and M3Si5 silicides, perovskite, fluorite, and pyrochlore oxides, and (intermetallic) aluminides have been fabricated. We further proposed to extend HECs to CCCs to include non-equimolar compositions and further consider short- and long-range orders, which reduce configurational entropies but offer additional dimens…
High-entropy materials often outperform their lower-entropy relatives in various aspects, such as thermal stability and fracture toughness. While there are extensive research activities in the field of high-entropy alloys, comparably little is performed for high-entropy ceramics, and especially for high-entropy diborides. Here we show, that not only the hardness of ZrB2 layers can be improved from 43.2 to 45.8 to 47.2 GPa through the formation of solid solution ternary diborides (Zr0.61Ti0.39B2) and high-entropy diborides (Zr0.23Ti0.20Hf0.19V0.14Ta0.24B2), respectively, but especially their th…
High-entropy intermetallic compounds (HEICs) were fabricated by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering to fill a knowledge gap between the traditional high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and emerging high-entropy ceramics (HECs). Notably, several four- or five-component equimolar aluminides, such as the B2-phase (Fe1/5Co1/5Ni1/5Mn1/5Cu1/5)Al, have been made into single-phase HEICs for the first time. Thermodynamic modeling and a reversible, temperature-dependent, phase-stability experiment suggest that such B2-phase HEICs are entropy-stabilized phases. The structure of these HEICs resembles tha…
Disorder enhances desired properties, as well as creating new avenues for synthesizing materials. For instance, hardness and yield stress are improved by solid-solution strengthening, a result of distortions and atomic size mismatches. Thermo-chemical stability is increased by the preference of chemically disordered mixtures for high-symmetry super-lattices. Vibrational thermal conductivity is decreased by force-constant disorder without sacrificing mechanical strength and stiffness. Thus, high-entropy ceramics propel a wide range of applications: from wear resistant coatings and thermal and e…
Two new high-entropy ceramics (HECs) in the weberite and fergusonite structures, along with unexpected formation of ordered pyrochlore phases with ultrahigh-entropy compositions and an abrupt pyrochlore-weberite transition, are discovered in a 21-component oxide system. While the Gibbs phase rule allows 21 equilibrium phases, nine out of the 13 compositions examined possess single HEC phases (with ultrahigh ideal configurational entropies: ~2.7kB per cation or higher on one sublattice in most cases). Notably, (15RE1/15)(Nb1/2Ta1/2)O4 possess a single monoclinic fergusonite (C2/c) phase and (15…
We have simulated the ultra-high-temperature ceramic zirconium carbide (ZrC) in order to predict electron and phonon scattering properties, including lifetimes and transport. Our predictions of heat and charge conductivity, which extend to 3000 K, are relevant to extreme temperature applications of ZrC. Mechanisms are identified on a first principles basis that considerably enhance or suppress heat transport at high temperature, including strain and anharmonicity. The extent to which boundary confinement and isotope scattering effects lower thermal conductivity is predicted.
Bottom-up design of high-entropy ceramics is a promising approach for realizing materials with unique combination of high hardness and fracture-resistance at elevated temperature. This work offers a simple yet fundamental design criterion - valence electron concentration (VEC) > ~9.5 e-/f.u. to populate bonding metallic states at the Fermi level - for selecting elemental compositions that may form rocksalt-structure (B1) high-entropy ceramics with enhanced plasticity (reduced brittleness). Single-phase B1 (HfTaTiWZr)C and (MoNbTaVW)C, chosen as representative systems due to their specific VEC …
High-entropy ceramics generally exhibit reduced thermal conductivity, but little is known about what controls this suppression and which descriptor can predict it. Herein, 18 medium- and high-entropy pyrochlores were synthesized to measure their thermal conductivity and Young's modulus. Up to 35% reductions in thermal conductivity were achieved with retained moduli, thereby attaining insulative yet stiff properties for potential thermal barrier coating applications. Notably, the measured thermal conductivity correlates well with a modified size disorder parameter. Thus, this modified size diso…

The formation possibility of a new (Zr0.25Nb0.25Ti0.25V0.25)C high-entropy ceramic (ZHC-1) was first analyzed by the first-principles calculations and thermodynamical analysis and then it was successfully fabricated by hot pressing sintering technique. The first-principles calculation results showed that the mixing enthalpy of ZHC-1 was 5.526 kJ/mol and the mixing entropy of ZHC-1 was in the range of 0.693R-1.040R. The thermodynamical analysis results showed that ZHC-1 was thermodynamically stable above 959 K owing to its negative mixing Gibbs free energy. The experimental results showed that …
Ultra-high temperature ceramics, UHTCs, are a group of materials with high technological interest because their use in extreme environments. However, their characterization at high temperatures represents the main obstacle for their fast development. Obstacles are found from a experimental point of view, where only few laboratories around the world have the resources to test these materials under extreme conditions, and also from a theoretical point of view, where actual methods are extremely expensive. Here, a new theoretical high-throughput framework for the prediction of the thermoelastic p…
The structure-property(S-P) correlation, especially in the context of high-temperature oxidation, in ZrB$_2$-MoSi$_2$ based Ultra High-Temperature Ceramic Matrix Composites (UHTCMCs) have been extensively investigated for quite some time since the last 25 years and a countless amount of published data is presently available in this field. On the other hand, emergence of correlative microscopy [1] has completely revolutionised the world of materials research, in a number of ways. However, owing to the challenges of sample preparation, there has hardly been a literature aimed at understanding the afo…
In this work, Ni50Al50 alloy is taken into consideration as potential brazing material for joining ZrB2 ultra-high temperature ceramic. The results of experimental study on high temperature interfacial phenomena between molten binary Ni50Al50 alloy and polycrystalline ZrB2, are shown. A sessile drop method combined with a capillary purification procedure was applied to investigate the wetting behavior of Ni50Al50/ZrB2 couple during holding for 400 seconds at temperature of 1688°C (i.e. at T=1.02Tm). It was found that the molten Ni50Al50 rapidly wets and spreads over the surface of ZrB2, while …
Ultra-high-temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are optimal structural materials for applications that require extreme temperature resilience, resistance to chemically aggressive environments, wear, and mechanical stress. Processing UHTCs with laser-based additive manufacturing (AM) has not been fully realized due to a variety of obstacles. In this work, selective laser reaction sintering (SLRS) techniques were investigated for the production of near net-shape UHTC ceramics such as HfC, ZrC, TiC, HfN, ZrN, and TiN. Group IV transition metal and metal oxide precursor materials were chemically converted…
Understanding surface reactivity is crucial in many fields, going from heterogeneous catalysis to materials oxidation and corrosion. In order to decipher the surface reactions of ZrB2 exposed to the harsh environment of aerospace components, the chemical activity of both Zr- and B-surfaces is predicted and compared by using density functional theory and nudged elastic band methods. In particular the adsorption, dissociation and diffusion of O2, CO and H2O are extensively examined through the calculation of surface adsorption energies and reaction pathways. We find the dissociative adsorption o…
Ultra-high-temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are candidate structural materials for applications that require resiliency to extreme temperature (>2000°C), high mechanical loads, or aggressive oxidizing environments. Processing UHTC transition metal carbides as standalone materials using additive manufacturing (AM) methods has not been fully realized due to their extremely slow atomic diffusivities that impede sintering and large volume changes during indirect AM that can induce defect structures. In this work, a two-step, reactive AM approach was studied for the formation of the ultra-high temperat…

Preparation and magnetic properties of (Ln0.2La0.2Nd0.2Sm0.2 Eu0.2)MnO3 (Ln = Dy, Ho, Er) high-entropy perovskite ceramics containing heavy rare earth elements
Five single-phase WB2- and MoB2-containing high-entropy borides (HEBs) have been made via reactive spark plasma sintering of elemental boron and metals. A large reactive driving force enables the full dissolution of 10-20 mol. % WB2 to form dense, single-phase HEBs, including (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Mo0.2W0.2)B2, (Ti0.2Ta0.2Cr0.2Mo0.2W0.2)B2, (Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2W0.2)B2, and (Zr0.225Hf0.225Ta0.225Mo0.225W0.1)B2; the successful fabrication of such single-phase WB2-containing HEBs has not been reported before. In the processing science, this result serves perhaps the best example demonstrating that the…
A new lead-free (1-x)Li0.12Na0.88NbO3-xBaTiO3 (0 to x to 40) piezoelectric ceramics have been prepared using conventional ceramics processing route. Structural analysis revealed an existence of morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), separating orthorhombic and tetragonal phases, between the BaTiO3 content, x = 10-12.5. A partial phase diagram has been established based on temperature-dependent permittivity data for this new system and a nearly vertical temperature-independent MPB is observed. An improvement in electrical properties near MPB (e.g., for x = 12.5; εr = 10489 at Tm, d33 = 30 pC/N, kp …
Shape memory (SM) ceramics, such as yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (YSTZ), are a unique family of SM materials that offer unique properties including ultra-high operating temperature, and high resistance to chemical corrosion and oxidation. However, formation of defects is usually observed in SM ceramics during manufacturing and/or by mechanical deformation. To fully take advantage of the SM properties of these ceramics, it is necessary to fully understand the nano-structural evolution of defects under external stimuli. In this study, defect closure behaviors in YSTZ nanopillars are inv…
A method for evaluating the piezoelectric response of unpoled ferroelectric ceramics from elastic and dielectric measurements is proposed and tested on BaTiO$_3$. The method is based on the observation that the softening in a ferroelectric phase with respect to the paraelectric phase is of piezoelectric origin. The angular averages of the piezoelectric softening in unpoled ceramics are calculated for ferroelectric phases of different symmetries. The expression of the orientational average with the piezoelectric and dielectric constants of single crystal tetragonal BaTiO$_3$ from the literature…
Do high-entropy alloys and ceramics have their grain boundary (GB) counterparts? As the concept of high-entropy grain boundaries (HEGBs) was initially proposed in 2016, this article provides the first complete and rigorous discussion of the underlying interfacial thermodynamics. A simplified segregation model can illustrate both GB and bulk high-entropy effects, which reduce GB energy with increasing temperature for saturated multicomponent (conventional and high-entropy) alloys. HEGBs can be utilized to stabilize nanocrystalline alloys at high temperatures via thermodynamic and kinetic effect…

Nanocrystalline metals and ceramics with <100 nm grain sizes and superior properties (e.g., mechanical strength, hardness, fracture toughness and stored dielectric energy) are of great interest. Much has been discussed about achieving nano grains, but little is known about maintaining grain-size uniformity that is critical for material reliability. An especially intriguing question is whether it is possible to achieve a size distribution narrower than what Hillert[1] theoretically predicted for normal grain growth, a possibility suggested, for growth with a higher growth exponent, by the gener…
Ultra-low density polymers, metals, and ceramic nanofoams are valued for their high strength-to-weight ratio, high surface area and insulating properties ascribed to their structural geometry. We obtain the labrynthine internal structure of a tantalum oxide nanofoam by X-ray diffractive imaging. Finite element analysis from the structure reveals mechanical properties consistent with bulk samples and with a diffusion limited cluster aggregation model, while excess mass on the nodes discounts the dangling fragments hypothesis of percolation theory.
Titanium diboride (TiB2) is a low-density refractory material belonging to the family of ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs). This paper reports on the production and microstructural and optical characterization of nearly fully dense TiB2, with particular interest to its potential utilization as novel thermal solar absorber. Monolithic bulk samples are produced starting from elemental reactants by a two-step method consisting of the Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) followed by the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) of the resulting powders. The surface of obtained samples has-be…
The Rietveld refinement of the polycrystalline powders of 1% Fe and Mn-doped (Na0.5Bi0.5)0.94Ba0.06Ti0.98V0.02O3 at the Ti-site confirmed a single rhombohedral (R3c) phase. The bandgap, (Eg) was affected by the anti-phase octahedral tilt angle and the spin-orbit splitting energy of Ti4+2p3/2 and Ti4+2p1/2 states. The decrease in Bi loss and increase in the binding energy of Ba due to Fe/Mn doping has been correlated to the strengthening of Bi-O and Ba-O bonds which was revealed from the XPS studies thereby further related to the average A-O bond length from structural studies. Hence, a reducti…
Entropy stabilization has garnered significant attention as a new approach to designing novel materials. Much of the work in this area has focused on bulk ceramic processing, leaving entropy-stabilized thin films relatively underexplored. Following an extensive multi-variable investigation of polycrystalline (Mg$_{0.2}$Co$_{0.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$Cu$_{0.2}$Zn$_{0.2}$)O thin films deposited via pulsed laser deposition (PLD), it is shown here that substrate temperature and deposition pressure have strong and repeatable effects on film texture and lattice parameter. Further analysis shows that films depo…

In the XRD measurements for SMO the new anomalies of the lattice parameters at 600-800 K range and the increasing of thermal expansion coefficients with a clear maximum in a vicinity at 670 K were detected. The N$\acute{e}$el phase transition for BSMO was observed at $T_N$=250 K in magnetic measurements and its trace was detected in dielectric, FTIR, DSC, and DMA experiments. The enthalpy and entropy changes of the phase …
