We introduce and analyse infinite dimensional Wishart processes taking values in the cone $S^+_1(H)$ of positive self-adjoint trace class operators on a separable real Hilbert space $H$. Our main result gives necessary and sufficient conditions for their existence, showing that these processes are necessarily of fixed finite rank almost surely, but they are not confined to a finite-dimensional subspace of $S^+_1(H)$. By providing explicit solutions to operator valued Riccati equations, we prove that their Fourier-Laplace transform is exponentially affine in the initial value. As a corollary, we obtain uniqueness in law as well as the Markov property. We actually show the explicit form of the Fourier-Laplace transform for a wide parameter regime, thereby also extending what is known in the finite-dimensional setting. Finally, under minor conditions on the parameters we prove the Feller property with respect to a slight refinement of the weak-$*$-topology on $S_1^+(H)$. Applications of our results range from tractable infinite-dimensional covariance modelling to the analysis of the limit spectrum of large random matrices.
A complete characterization of Wishart distributions on the cones of positive semi-definite matrices is provided in terms of a description of their maximal parameter domain. This result is new in that also degenerate scale parameters are included. For such cases, the standard constraints on the range of the shape parameter may be relaxed. Furthermore, the infinitely divisible Wishart distributions are revealed as suitable transformations and embeddings of one dimensional gamma distributions. This note completes the findings of Lévy (1937) concerning infinite divisibility and Gindikin (1975) re…
This article is concerned with the joint law of an integrated Wishart bridge process and the trace of an integrated inverse Wishart bridge process over the interval $ \left[0,t\right] $. Its Laplace transform is obtained by studying the Wishart bridge processes and the absolute continuity property of Wishart laws.
Based on a student research project this article gives a short review on Wishart processes. A Wishart procces is a matrix valued continuous time stochastic process with a marginal Wishart distribution. The Wishart distribution is a matrix variate generalization of the chi-squared distribution. Since Wishart processes are defined as a solution to a stochastic differential equation, the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions will be discussed comprehensively. It is also shown that some solutions of the stochastic differential equation can be expressed as squares of matrix variate Ornstein-…
A characterization of the existence of non-central Wishart distributions (with shape and non-centrality parameter) as well as the existence of solutions to Wishart stochastic differential equations (with initial data and drift parameter) in terms of their exact parameter domains is given. These two families are the natural extensions of the non-central chi-square distributions and the squared Bessel processes to the positive semidefinite matrices.
Let $X^{(δ)}$ be a Wishart process of dimension $δ$, with values in the set of positive matrices of size $m$. We are interested in the large deviations for a family of matrix-valued processes $\{δ^{-1} X_t^{(δ)}, t \leq 1 \}$ as $δ$ tends to infinity. The process $X^{(δ)}$ is a solution of a stochastic differential equation with a degenerate diffusion coefficient. Our approach is based upon the introduction of exponential martingales. We give some applications to large deviations for functionals of the Wishart processes, for example the set of eigenvalues.
We consider eigenvalues of generalized Wishart processes as well as particle systems, of which the empirical measures converge to deterministic measures as the dimension goes to infinity. In this paper, we obtain central limit theorems to characterize the fluctuations of the empirical measures around the limit measures by using stochastic calculus. As applications, central limit theorems for the Dyson's Brownian motion and the eigenvalues of the Wishart process are recovered under slightly more general initial conditions, and a central limit theorem for the eigenvalues of a symmetric Ornstein-…
This paper is devoted to the study of the eigenvalues of the Wishart process which are the analogof the Dyson Brownian Motion for covariance matrices. Such processes were in particular studied byBru. The mean field convergence of the empirical measure of these eigenvalues was proved Malecki andPerez. In this paper, we provide a new approach to the mean field convergence problem using toolsfrom the free rectangular convolution theory developed by Benaych-Georges, which in particular allowsto compute explicitly the limit measure valued flow. We highlight the link with the integro-differentialequ…
These lecture notes provide an introduction to the theory of Wishart distributions and Wishart processes, particularly what concerns their existence and their realizations as solutions of Wishart SDEs. The material is based on recent developments in the theory of affine processes and related fields.
The ergodic unitarily invariant measures on the space of infinite Hermitian matrices have been classified by Pickrell and Olshanski-Vershik. The much-studied complex inverse Wishart measures form a projective family, thus giving rise to a unitarily invariant measure on infinite positive-definite matrices. In this paper we completely solve the corresponding problem of ergodic decomposition for this measure.
The purpose of this paper is to study the existence and uniqueness of solutions to a Stochastic Differential Equation (SDE) coming from the eigenvalues of Wishart processes. The coordinates are non-negative, evolve as Cox-Ingersoll-Ross (CIR) processes and repulse each other according to a Coulombian like interaction force. We show the existence of strong and pathwise unique solutions to the system until the first multiple collision, and give a necessary and sufficient condition on the parameters of the SDE for this multiple collision not to occur in finite time.
This work deals with the simulation of Wishart processes and affine diffusions on positive semidefinite matrices. To do so, we focus on the splitting of the infinitesimal generator, in order to use composition techniques as Ninomiya and Victoir or Alfonsi. Doing so, we have found a remarkable splitting for Wishart processes that enables us to sample exactly Wishart distributions, without any restriction on the parameters. It is related but extends existing exact simulation methods based on Bartlett's decomposition. Moreover, we can construct high-order discretization schemes for Wishart proces…
In this article, we obtain an equation for the high-dimensional limit measure of eigenvalues of generalized Wishart processes, and the results is extended to random particle systems that generalize SDEs of eigenvalues. We also introduce a new set of conditions on the coefficient matrices for the existence and uniqueness of a strong solution for the SDEs of eigenvalues. The equation of the limit measure is further discussed assuming self-similarity on the eigenvalues.
In the last decade, there has been a growing interest to use Wishart processes for modelling, especially for financial applications. However, there are still few studies on the estimation of its parameters. Here, we study the Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) in order to estimate the drift parameters of a Wishart process. We obtain precise convergence rates and limits for this estimator in the ergodic case and in some nonergodic cases. We check that the MLE achieves the optimal convergence rate in each case. Motivated by this study, we also present new results on the Laplace transform that ex…
We introduce a stochastic process with Wishart marginals: the generalised Wishart process (GWP). It is a collection of positive semi-definite random matrices indexed by any arbitrary dependent variable. We use it to model dynamic (e.g. time varying) covariance matrices. Unlike existing models, it can capture a diverse class of covariance structures, it can easily handle missing data, the dependent variable can readily include covariates other than time, and it scales well with dimension; there is no need for free parameters, and optional parameters are easy to interpret. We describe how to con…
We consider affine Markov processes taking values in convex cones. In particular, we characterize all affine processes taking values in an irreducible symmetric cone in terms of certain Lévy-Khintchine triplets. This is the complete classification of affine processes on these conic state spaces, thus extending the theory of Wishart processes on positive semidefinite matrices, as put forward by Bru (1991).
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a homogeneous Markov process taking values in $\R^n$ to enjoy the time-inversion property of degree $α$. The condition sets the shape for the semigroup densities of the process and allows to further extend the class of known processes satisfying the time-inversion property. As an application we recover the result of Watanabe in \cite{Wa1975} for continuous and conservative Markov processes on $\R_+$. As new examples we generalize Dunkl processes and construct a matrix-valued process with jumps related to the Wishart process by a skew-product rep…
We put forward a complete theory on moment explosion for fairly general state-spaces. This includes a characterization of the validity of the affine transform formula in terms of minimal solutions of a system of generalized Riccati differential equations. Also, we characterize the class of positive semidefinite processes, and provide existence of weak and strong solutions for Wishart SDEs. As an application, we answer a conjecture of M.L. Eaton on the maximal parameter domain of non-central Wishart distributions. The last chapter of this thesis comprises three individual works on affine models…
In this paper, we study complex Wishart processes or the so-called Laguerre processes. We give some interest to the behaviour of the eigenvalues process, derive some useful SDE and compute both infinitesimal generator and semi-group. We also give absolute-continuity relations between different indices. Then, we compute the density function of the generalised Hartman-Watson law as well as the law of the first hitting time of 0 when the size m=2.
For affine processes on finite-dimensional cones, we give criteria for geometric ergodicity - that is exponentially fast convergence to a unique stationary distribution. Ergodic results include both the existence of exponential moments of the limiting distribution, where we exploit the crucial affine property, and finite moments, where we invoke the polynomial property of affine semigroups. Furthermore, we elaborate sufficient conditions for aperiodicity and irreducibility. Our results are applicable to Wishart processes with jumps on the positive semidefinite matrices, continuous-time branchi…
In this article, we study high-dimensional behavior of empirical spectral distributions $\{L_N(t), t\in[0,T]\}$ for a class of $N\times N$ symmetric/Hermitian random matrices, whose entries are generated from the solution of stochastic differential equation driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H \in(1/2,1)$. For Wigner-type matrices, we obtain almost sure relative compactness of $\{L_N(t), t\in[0,T]\}_{N\in\mathbb N}$ in $C([0,T], \mathbf P(\mathbb R))$ following the approach in \cite{Anderson2010}; for Wishart-type matrices, we obtain tightness of $\{L_N(t), t\in[0,T]\}_…
We prove a version of the classical Dufresne identity for matrix processes. In particular, we show that the inverse Wishart laws on the space of positive definite r x r matrices can be realized by the infinite time horizon integral of M_t times its transpose in which t -> M_t is a drifted Brownian motion on the general linear group. This solves a problem in the study of spiked random matrix ensembles which served as the original motivation for this result. Various known extensions of the Dufresne identity (and their applications) are also shown to have analogs in this setting. For example, we …
We prove that a stationary max--infinitely divisible process is mixing (ergodic) iff its dependence function converges to 0 (is Cesaro summable to 0). These criteria are applied to some classes of max--infinitely divisible processes.
We review the probabilistic properties of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes in Hilbert spaces driven by Lévy processes. The emphasis is on the different contexts in which these processes arise, such as stochastic partial differential equations, continuous-state branching processes, generalised Mehler semigroups and operator self-decomposable distributions. We also examine generalisations to the case where the driving noise is cylindrical.
The so-called "supOU" processes, namely the superpositions of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type processes are stationary processes for which one can specify separately the marginal distribution and the dependence structure. They can have finite or infinite variance. We study the limit behavior of integrated infinite variance supOU processes adequately normalized. Depending on the specific circumstances, the limit can be fractional Brownian motion but it can also be a process with infinite variance, a Lévy stable process with independent increments or a stable process with dependent increments. We show t…
For many stochastic diffusion processes with mean field interaction, convergence of the rescaled total mass processes towards a diffusion process is known. Here we show convergence of the so-called finite system scheme for interacting jump-type processes known as mutually catalytic branching processes with infinite branching rate. Due to the lack of second moments the rescaling of time is different from the finite rate mutually catalytic case. The limit of rescaled total mass processes is identified as the finite rate mutually catalytic branching diffusion. The convergence of rescaled processe…
We observe the Galton-Watson Branching Processes. Limit properties of transition functions and their convergence to invariant measures are investigated.
We establish the existence and pathwise uniqueness of regime-switching diffusion processes in an infinite state space, which could be time-inhomogeneous and state-dependent. Then the strong Feller properties of these processes are investigated by using the theory of parabolic differential equations and dimensional-free Harnack inequalities.
SupOU processes are superpositions of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type processes with a random intensity parameter. They are stationary processes whose marginal distribution and dependence structure can be specified independently. Integrated supOU processes have then stationary increments and satisfy central and non-central limit theorems. Their moments, however, can display an unusual behavior known as "intermittency". We show here that intermittency can also appear when the processes have a heavy tailed marginal distribution and, in particular, an infinite variance.
We consider an indecomposable Galton-Watson branching process with countably infinitely many types. Assuming that the process is critical and allowing for infinite variance of the offspring sizes of some (or all) types of particles we describe the asymptotic behavior of the survival probability of the process and establish a Yaglom-type conditional limit theorem for the infinite-dimensional vector of the number of particles of all types.
We present a central limit theorem for stationary random fields that are short-range dependent and asymptotically independent. As an application, we present a central limit theorem for an infinite family of interacting Itô-type diffusion processes.
We characterize the finite variation property for stationary increment mixed moving averages driven by infinitely divisible random measures. Such processes include fractional and moving average processes driven by Levy processes, and also their mixtures. We establish two types of zero-one laws for the finite variation property. We also consider some examples to illustrate our results.
In this article, we consider a sequence $(N_n)_{n \geq 1}$ of point processes, whose points lie in a subset $E$ of $\bR \verb2\2 \{0\}$, and satisfy an asymptotic independence condition. Our main result gives some necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence in distribution of $(N_n)_{n \geq 1}$ to an infinitely divisible point process $N$. As applications, we discuss the exceedance processes and point processes based on regularly varying sequences.
In this paper we aim to construct infinite dimensional versions of well established Piecewise Deterministic Monte Carlo methods, such as the Bouncy Particle Sampler, the Zig-Zag Sampler and the Boomerang Sampler. In order to do so we provide an abstract infinite-dimensional framework for Piecewise Deterministic Markov Processes (PDMPs) with unbounded event intensities. We further develop exponential convergence to equilibrium of the infinite dimensional Boomerang Sampler, using hypocoercivity techniques. Furthermore we establish how the infinite dimensional Boomerang Sampler admits a finite di…
The paper studies a class of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes on the classical Wiener space. These processes are associated with a diffusion type Dirichlet form whose corresponding diffusion operator is unbounded in the Cameron-Martin space. It is shown that the distributions of certain finite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes converge weakly to the distribution of such an infinite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. For the infinite dimensional processes, the ordinary scalar quadratic variation is calculated. Moreover, relative to the stochastic calculus via regularization, the scalar …
We extend the Kalman-Bucy filter to the case where both the system and observation processes are driven by finite dimensional Lévy processes, but whereas the process driving the system dynamics is square-integrable, that driving the observations is not; however it remains integrable. The key technique used is approximation by processes having bounded jumps.
In this paper we address the problem of rare-event simulation for heavy-tailed Lévy processes with infinite activities. We propose a strongly efficient importance sampling algorithm that builds upon the sample path large deviations for heavy-tailed Lévy processes, stick-breaking approximation of extrema of Lévy processes, and the randomized debiasing Monte Carlo scheme. The proposed importance sampling algorithm can be applied to a broad class of Lévy processes and exhibits significant improvements in efficiency when compared to crude Monte-Carlo method in our numerical experiments.
Starting from a sequence of independent Wright-Fisher diffusion processes on $[0,1]$, we construct a class of reversible infinite dimensional diffusion processes on $\DD_\infty:= \{{\bf x}\in [0,1]^\N: \sum_{i\ge 1} x_i=1\}$ with GEM distribution as the reversible measure. Log-Sobolev inequalities are established for these diffusions, which lead to the exponential convergence to the corresponding reversible measures in the entropy. Extensions are made to a class of measure-valued processes over an abstract space $S$. This provides a reasonable alternative to the Fleming-Viot process which does…
The present paper continues the study of infinite dimensional calculus via regularization, started by C. Di Girolami and the second named author, introducing the notion of weak Dirichlet process in this context. Such a process X, taking values in a Banach space H, is the sum of a local martingale and a suitable orthogonal process. The concept of weak Dirichlet process fits the notion of convolution type processes, a class including mild solutions for stochastic evolution equations on infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces and in particular of several classes of stochastic partial differential equ…
Let $Φ$ be a nuclear space and let $Φ'_β$ denote its strong dual. In this work we establish the one-to-one correspondence between infinitely divisible measures on $Φ'_β$ and Lévy processes taking values in $Φ'_β$. Moreover, we prove the Lévy-Itô decomposition, the Lévy-Khintchine formula and the existence of càdlàg versions for $Φ'_β$-valued Lévy processes. A characterization for Lévy measures on $Φ'_β$ is also established. Finally, we prove the Lévy-Khintchine formula for infinitely divisible measures on $Φ'_β$.
We prove a complete class theorem that characterizes \emph{all} stationary time reversible Markov processes whose finite dimensional marginal distributions (of all orders) are infinitely divisible. Aside from two degenerate cases (iid and constant), in both discrete and continuous time every such process with full support is a branching process with Poisson or Negative Binomial marginal univariate distributions and a specific bivariate distribution at pairs of times. As a corollary, we prove that every nondegenerate stationary integer valued processes constructed by the Markov thinning process…
The dimension-free Harnack inequality and uniform heat kernel upper/lower bounds are derived for a class of infinite-dimensional GEM processes, which was introduced in \cite{FW} to simulate the two-parameter GEM distributions. In particular, the associated Dirichlet form satisfies the super log-Sobolev inequality which strengthens the log-Sobolev inequality derived in \cite{FW}. To prove the main results, explicit Harnack inequality and super Poincaré inequality are established for the one-dimensional Wright-Fisher diffusion processes. The main tool of the study is the coupling by change of me…
We take up the issue of deriving the limit as $n\to\infty$ of the GREM-like K process on a tree with $n$ levels. Under specific conditions on the parameters of the process, implying the martingality of a modification of the underlying clock process sequences, we obtain infinite level clock processes as nontrivial limits of the finite level clocks, and use them to construct a process on a suitable product space which is then shown to be the limit of the $n$ level K processes as $n\to\infty$. Some properties of the limiting, infinite level K process are established, like an expression for the as…
Some probabilistic aspects of the number variance statistic are investigated. Infinite systems of independent Brownian motions and symmetric alpha-stable processes are used to construct new examples of processes which exhibit both divergent and saturating number variance behaviour. We derive a general expression for the number variance for the spatial particle configurations arising from these systems and this enables us to deduce various limiting distribution results for the fluctuations of the associated counting functions. In particular, knowledge of the number variance allows us to introdu…
We investigate an application of slowly varying functions (in sense of Karamata) in the theory of Markov branching process. We treat the critical case so that the infinitesimal generating function of the process has the infinite second moment, but it regularly varies with the remainder. We improve the Basic Lemma of the theory of critical Markov branching process and refine known limit results.
We consider a particle system with weights and the scaling limits derived from its occupation time. We let the particles perform independent recurrent Lévy motions and we assume that their initial positions and weights are given by a Poisson point process. In the limit we obtain a number of recently discovered stationary stable self-similar processes recently studied in [SAM1] and [SAM2]. We also observe very different limit processes depending on whether the function, whose occupation time is considered, integrates to zero or not.
We construct a four parameter (z, z', a, b) family of Markov dynamics that preserve the z-measures on the boundary of the branching graph for classical Lie groups of type B, C, D. Our guiding principle is the "method of intertwiners" used previously in [7] to construct Markov processes that preserve the zw-measures.
The large deviations of an infinite moving average process with exponentially light tails are very similar to those of an i.i.d. sequence as long as the coefficients decay fast enough. If they do not, the large deviations change dramatically. We study this phenomenon in the context of functional large, moderate and huge deviation principles.
We study the asymptotic behavior of empirical processes generated by measurable bounded functions of an infinite source Poisson transmission process when the session length have infinite variance. In spite of the boundedness of the function, the normalized fluctuations of such an empirical process converge to a non-Gaussian stable process. This phenomenon can be viewed as caused by the long-range dependence in the transmission process. Completing previous results on the empirical mean of similar types of processes, our results on non-linear bounded functions exhibit the influence of the limit …
By applying an idea of Borodin and Olshanski [J. Algebra 313 (2007), 40-60], we study various scaling limits of determinantal point processes with trace class projection kernels given by spectral projections of selfadjoint Sturm-Liouville operators. Instead of studying the convergence of the kernels as functions, the method directly addresses the strong convergence of the induced integral operators. We show that, for this notion of convergence, the Dyson, Airy, and Bessel kernels are universal in the bulk, soft-edge, and hard-edge scaling limits. This result allows us to give a short and unifi…
In this paper, we study complex Wishart processes or the so-called Laguerre processes $(X_t)_{t\geq0}$. We are interested in the behaviour of the eigenvalue process; we derive some useful stochastic differential equations and compute both the infinitesimal generator and the semi-group. We also give absolute-continuity relations between different indices. Finally, we compute the density function of the so-called generalized Hartman--Watson law as well as the law of $T_0:=\inf\{t,\det(X_t)=0\}$ when the size of the matrix is 2.
In this note we identify the distributional limits of non-negative, ergodic stationary processes, showing that all are possible. Consequences for infinite ergodic theory are also explored and new examples of distributionally stable- and $α$-rationally ergodic tranformations are presented.
We consider diffusion processes in Hilbert spaces with constant non-degenerate diffusion operators and show that, under broad assumptions on the drift, the transition probabilities of the process are positive on ellipsoids associated with the diffusion operator. This is an infinite-dimensional analogue of positivity of densities of transition probabilities. Our results apply to diffusions corresponding to stochastic partial differential equations.
We prove distributional limit theorems and one-sided laws of the iterated logarithm for a class of positive, mixing, stationary, stochastic processes which contains those obtained from non-integrable observables over certain piecewise expanding maps. This is done by extending Darling-Kac theory to a suitable family of infinite measure preserving transformations.
