In wind-fed X-ray binaries, the radiatively driven wind of the primary star can be suppressed by the EUV irradiation of the compact secondary star, leading to an increased accretion rate. This causes feedback between the released accretion power and the luminosity of the compact star. We investigate the feedback process between the released accretion power and the X-ray luminosity of the compact star in the unique high-mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-3. We assume that a part of the wind-fed power experiences a small amplitude variability around the source luminosity. We propose a simple heuristic model to couple the influence of EUV irradiation on the stellar wind (from the Wolf-Rayet companion star) with the X-ray source itself. The resulting time profile of luminosity mimics that of the input variability, albeit with a larger amplitude. The most important property of the input variability are turnover times when it changes its sign and starts to have either positive or negative feedback. The bolometric luminosity derived by spectral modeling is the time average of the resulting feedback luminosity. We demonstrate that the erratic behavior of the X-ray light curve of Cygnus X-3 may have its origin in the small amplitude variability of the X-ray source and feedback with the companion wind. This variability could arise in the accretion flow and/or due to the loss of kinetic energy in a jet or an accretion disk wind. In order to produce similar properties of the simulated light curve as observed, we have to restrict the largest accretion radius to a changing level, and assume variable timescales for the rise and decline phases of the light curve.
We investigated the decades' long-term X-ray variations in bright low-mass X-ray binaries containing a neutron star (NS-LMXB). The light curves of MAXI/GSC and RXTE/ASM covers $\sim$ 26 yr, and high-quality X-ray light curves are obtained from 33 NS-LMXBs. Among them, together with Ginga/ASM, two sources (GX 3$+$1 and GX 9$+$1) showed an apparent sinusoidal variation with the period of $\sim 5$ yr and $\sim 10$ yr in the 34 yr light curve. Their X-ray luminosities were $(1-4)\times10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the middle of the luminosity distribution of the NS-LMXB. Other seven sources (Ser X-1, 4…
In Paul, Raichur and Mukherjee (2005) we had reported a spectral mode change in the X-ray binary pulsar Cen X-3 using the then available ASM light curves of Cen X-3. Being mindful of the fact that instrument calibration or other issues like gain changes, software issues etc. might give rise to some of the artifacts, we had used the ASM light curves of three other X-ray binary pulsars namely Her X-1, SMC X-1 and Vela X-1 for comparison for the same observation times. In light of the recent finding of Müller et al. (2011); which reports the non-detection of such features in the current ASM light…
Swift/BAT and RXTE/ASM observations have monitored the X-ray binary system Her X-1 for approximately 14.5 years each, and both were monitoring Her X-1 for a period of ~5.5 years. Here we study the 35-day cycle using these observations. Using a cross-correlation method we find the times of peaks of the 35-day cycles for ~150 cycles observed by Swift/BAT and ~150 cycles observed by RXTE/ASM. These cycles include ~60 observed with both instruments. The noise level of the RXTE/ASM measurements is larger than that of Swift/BAT, resulting in larger uncertainty in peak times. The distribution of 35-d…
We studied the long term flux distribution of Cygnus X-1 using RXTE-ASM lightcurves in two energy bands B (3-5 keV) & C (5-12.1 keV) as well as MAXI lightcurves in energy bands B (4-10 keV) & C (10-20 keV). The flux histograms were fitted using a two component model. For MAXI data, each of the components is better fitted by a log-normal distribution, rather than a Gaussian one. Their best fit centroids and fraction of time the source spends being in that component are consistent with those of the Hard and Soft spectral states Thus, the long term flux distribution of the states of Cygnus X-1 ha…
We present the results of a systematic search in approximately 14 years of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer All-Sky Monitor data for evidence of periodicities not reported by Wen et al. (2006). Two variations of the commonly used Fourier analysis search method have been employed to achieve significant improvements in sensitivity. The use of these methods and the accumulation of additional data have resulted in the detection of the signatures of the orbital periods of eight low-mass X-ray binary systems and of ten high-mass X-ray binaries not listed in the tables of Wen et al.
We have studied X-ray spectral state transitions that can be seen in the long- term monitoring light curves of bright X-ray binaries from the All-Sky Monitor (ASM) on board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on board Swift during a period of five years from 2005 to 2010. We have applied a program to automatically identify the hard-to-soft (H-S) spectral state transitions in the bright X- ray binaries monitored by the ASM and the BAT. In total we identified 128 hard-to-soft transitions, of which 59 occurred after 2008. We also determined the transition fl…
We study several Galactic black hole candidates using long-time RXTE/ASM X-ray data to search for telltale signatures of differences in viscous timescales in the two components used in the Two-Component Advective Flow (TCAF) paradigm. In high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) mainly winds are accreted. This nearly inviscid and dominant sub-Keplerian flow falls almost freely towards the black hole. A standard Keplerian disc can form out of this sub-Keplerian matter in presence of a significant viscosity and could be small in size. However, in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), highly viscous and larger…
We present observations of the 9.8 s X-ray pulsar XTE J1859+083 made with the ASM and PCA on board RXTE, and the WFC on board BeppoSAX. The ASM data cover a 12 year time interval and show that an extended outburst occurred between approximately MJD 50,250 and 50,460 (1996 June 16 to 1997 January 12). The ASM data excluding this outburst interval suggest a possible modulation with a period of 60.65 +/- 0.08 days. Eighteen sets of PCA observations were obtained over an approximately one month interval in 1999. The flux variability measured with the PCA appears consistent with the possible period…
Dying pulse trains (DPTs) pulses of radiation with decreasing intensity and decreasing intervals between them are predicted by General Relativity to occur from material spiraling into an event horizon after detaching from the last stable orbit in an accretion disk around a black hole. Two events resembling DPTs were detected in 3 hours observation of Cyg X-1 in the far UV using the High Speed Photometer on the Hubble Space Telescope (Dolan 2001). We observed Cyg X-1, a leading candidate for a black hole, with the proportional counter array on RXTE to seek such events in the low-energy X-ray re…
We study a large sample of RXTE PCA/HEXTE observations of Cyg X-1. We characterize the spectra by soft and hard X-ray colours (which define the spectral states), and fit them with a physical model of hybrid, thermal/non-thermal Comptonization. We then fit the power spectra by a sum of Lorentzians. We show the resulting correlations between the spectral colour (defining the hard, intermediate and soft spectral states), the Comptonization amplification factor, the fractional Compton reflection strength, and the peak frequency of the Lorentzians. We also calculate the fractional variability (rms)…
A 24 day period for the low-mass X-ray binary GX 13+1 was previously proposed on the basis of 7 years of RXTE ASM observations (Corbet 2003) and it was suggested that this was the orbital period of the system. This would make it the one of the longest known orbital periods for a Galactic low-mass X-ray binary powered by Roche lobe overflow. We present here the results of: (i) K-band photometry obtained with the SMARTS Consortium CTIO 1.3 telescope on 68 nights over a 10 month interval; (ii) Continued monitoring with the RXTE ASM, analyzed using a semi-weighted power spectrum instead of the dat…
We report on the analysis of the broad Fe Kalpha line feature of Cygnus X-1 in the spectra of four simultaneous hard intermediate state observations made with the X-ray Multiple Mirror mission (XMM-Newton), the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), and the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL). The high quality of the XMM-Newton data taken in the Modified Timing Mode of the EPIC-pn camera provides a great opportunity to investigate the broadened Fe Kalpha reflection line at 6.4keV with a very high signal to noise ratio. The 4-500keV energy range is used to constrain the unde…
The presence of two distinct spectral states has previously been reported for Cen X-3 on the basis of RXTE/ASM observations. Triggered by this result, we investigated the spectral properties of the source using the larger amount of X-ray data now available with the aim to clarify and interpret the reported behavior. To check the reported results we used the same data set and followed the same analysis procedures as in the work reporting the two spectral states. Additionally, we repeated the analysis using the enlarged data sample including the newest RXTE/ASM observations as well as the data f…
Studies of some bright, super-Eddington transient pulsars show a negative correlation between the energy of the cyclotron resonance scattering feature (CRSF) and the bolometric luminosity. For Her X-1, using repeated RXTE observations during 1996-2005, the inverse dependence was found: the energy of the cyclotron line increases as the luminosity increases. The X-ray flux measured by the RXTE/ASM (2-10 keV) has been assumed to represent the luminosity - more precisely: the maximum X-ray flux reached during the respective 35 d Main-On. Here, we question whether the ASM flux is really an accurate…
We report here discovery of a 3.32 day orbital period in the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient (SFXT) source IGR J16479-4514. Using the long term light curve of this source obtained with Swift-BAT in the energy range of 15-50 keV, we have clearly detected an orbital modulation including a full eclipse of duration ~0.6 day. In the hard X-ray band of the BAT instrument, the eclipse ingress and egress are rapid. We have also used the long term light curve obtained with the RXTE -ASM in the energy range of 1.5-12 keV. Taken independently, the detection of orbital modulation in the RXTE -ASM light cu…
The knowledge of the spectral state of a black hole is essential for the interpretation of data from black holes in terms of their emission models. Based on pointed observations of Cyg X-1 with the Rossi X-ray timing Explorer (RXTE) that are used to classify simultaneous RXTE-ASM observations, we develop a scheme based on RXTE -ASM colors and count rates that can be used to classify all observations of this canonical black hole that were performed between 1996 and 2011. We show that a simple count rate criterion, as used previously, leads to a significantly higher fraction of misclassified obs…
The bright low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) GX 13+1 is one of the most peculiar Galactic binary systems. A periodicity of 24.27 d with a formal statistical error of 0.03 d was observed in its power spectrum density obtained with RXTE All Sky Monitor (ASM) data spanning 14 years. Starting from a recent study, indicating GX 13+1 as a possible dipping source candidate, we systematically searched for periodic dips in the X-ray light curves of GX 13+1 from 1996 up to 2013 using RXTE/ASM, and MAXI data to determine for the first time the X-ray orbital ephemeris of GX 13+1. We searched for a periodic sig…
Using Suzaku and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, we have conducted a series of four simultaneous observations of the galactic black hole candidate Cyg X-1 in what were historically faint and spectrally hard low states. Additionally, all of these observations occurred near superior conjunction with our line of sight to the X-ray source passing through the dense phases of the focused wind from the mass donating secondary. One of our observations was also simultaneous with observations by the Chandra-High Energy Transmission Grating. These latter spectra are crucial for revealing the ionized abs…
Microquasars, Galactic binary systems showing extended and variable radio emission, are potential gamma-ray emitters. Indications of gamma-ray transient episodes have been reported in at least two systems, Cyg X-1 and Cyg X-3. The identification of additional gamma-ray emitting microquasars is key for a better understanding of these systems. Very-high-energy gamma-ray emission from microquasars has been predicted to happen during periods of transient outbursts potentially connected with the formation of a jet-like outflow. Contemporaneous observations using the H.E.S.S. telescope array and the…
The time evolution of the electromagnetic emission from blazars, in particular high frequency peaked sources (HBLs), displays irregular activity not yet understood. In this work we report a methodology capable of characterizing the time behavior of these variable objects. The Maximum Likelihood Blocks (MLBs) is a model-independent estimator which sub-divides the light curve into time blocks, whose length and amplitude are compatible with states of constant emission rate of the observed source. The MLBs yields the statistical significance in the rate variations and strongly suppresses the noise…
We analyse a large number ($> 500$) pointed RXTE observations of Cyg X-1 and model the spectrum of each one. A subset of the observations for which there is simultaneous reliable measure of the hardness ratio by the All Sky Monitor, shows that the sample covers nearly all the spectral shapes of Cyg X-1. The relative strength, width of the Iron line and the reflection parameter are in general correlated with the high energy photon spectral index $Γ$. This is broadly consistent with a geometry where for the hard state (low $Γ\sim 1.7$) there is a hot inner Comptonizing region surrounded by a tru…
In a dwarf nova, the accretion disk around the white dwarf is a source of ultraviolet, optical, and infrared photons, but is never hot enough to emit X-rays. Observed X-rays instead originate from the boundary layer between the disk and the white dwarf. As the disk switches between quiescence and outburst states, the 2-10 keV X-ray flux is usually seen to be anti-correlated with the optical brightness. Here we present RXTE monitoring observations of two dwarf novae, VW Hyi and WW Cet, confirming the optical/X-ray anti-correlation in these two systems. However, we do not detect any episodes of …
We study orbital modulation of X-rays from Cyg X-3, using data from Swift, INTEGRAL and RXTE. Using the wealth of the presently available data and an improved averaging method, we obtain energy-dependent folded and averaged light curves with unprecedented accuracy. We find that above ~5 keV, the modulation depth decreases with the increasing energy, which is consistent with the modulation being caused by both bound-free absorption and Compton scattering in the stellar wind of the donor, with minima corresponding to the highest optical depth, which occurs around the superior conjunction. We fin…
X-ray pulses with millisecond-long FWHM have been detected in RXTE (Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer) observations of Cyg X-1. Their identity as short-timescale variations in the X-ray luminosity of the source, and not stochastic variability in the X-ray flux, is established by their simultaneous occurrence and similar pulse structure in two independent energy bandpasses. The light-time distance corresponding to the timescale of their FWHM indicates that they originate in the inner region of the accretion disk around the system's black hole component. The fluence in the pulses can equal or exceed t…
The accretion disk around a compact object is a nonlinear general relativistic system involving magnetohydrodynamics. Naturally the question arises whether such a system is chaotic (deterministic) or stochastic (random) which might be related to the associated transport properties whose origin is still not confirmed. Earlier, the black hole system GRS 1915+105 was shown to be low dimensional chaos in certain temporal classes. However, so far such nonlinear phenomena have not been studied fairly well for neutron stars which are unique for their magnetosphere and kHz quasi-periodic oscillation (…
We present results from simultaneous observations of the high-mass X-ray binary system Cygnus X-1 / HDE 226868 with Suzaku, Chandra-HETGS, XMM-Newton, RXTE, INTEGRAL, and Swift in 2008 April. Performed shortly after orbital phase 0, when our line of sight to the black hole passes through the densest part of the O-star's wind, these obervations show common transient absorption dips in the soft X-ray band. For the first time, however, we detect a simultaneous scattering trough in the hard X-ray light curves. The more neutral clump is thus only the core of a larger ionized blob, which contains a …
We analyze several outbursts of a few transient sources using Proportional Counter Array (PCA) data (2.5-25 keV) as well as All Sky Monitor (ASM) data (1.5-12 keV) of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite. We find a time delay between the arrival times of the Keplerian disc component and the halo of the Two-Component Advective Flow (TCAF) when the spectral data is fitted with TCAF solution. We compare this time delay from the spectral fits with the TCAF solution of the transient low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) e.g., GX 339-4, H 1743-322 and MAXI J1836-194 with that of the high mass X-ra…
The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer has observed the nearest radio galaxy, Centaurus A, in 13 intervals from 1966 August to 2009 February over the 3--200 keV band. Spectra accumulated over the 13 intervals were well described with an absorbed power law and iron line. Cut-off power laws and Compton reflection from cold matter did not provide a better description. For the 2009 January observation, we set a lower limit on the cut-off energy at over 2 MeV. The power spectral density function was generated from RXTE/ASM and PCA data, as well as an XMM-Newton long look, and clear evidence for a break at…
We present the spectral and timing evolution of the persistent black hole X-ray binary GRS 1758-258 based on almost 12 years of observations using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array. While the source was predominantly found in the hard state during this time, it entered the thermally dominated soft state seven times. In the soft state GRS 1758-258 shows a strong decline in flux above 3 keV rather than the pivoting flux around 10 keV more commonly shown by black hole transients. In its 3-20 keV hardness intensity diagram, GRS 1758-258 shows a hysteresis of hard and soft …
4U 1822-37 is a Low Mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) system with an Accretion Disk Corona. We have obtained 16 new mid-eclipse time measurements of this source during the last 13 years using X- ray observations made with the RXTE-PCA, RXTE-ASM, Swift-XRT, XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories. These, along with the earlier known mid-eclipse times have been used to accurately determine the timescale for a change in the orbital period of 4U 1822-37. We have derived an orbital period Porb = 0.23210887(15) d, which is changing at the rate of \cdot Porb = 1.3(3) x 10-10 d d-1 (at T0 = MJD 45614). The timesc…
We have performed a principal component analysis on the X-ray spectra of the microquasar Cygnus X-3 from RXTE, INTEGRAL and Swift during a major flare ejection event in 2006 May-July. The analysis showed that there are two main variability components in play, i.e. two principal components explained almost all the variability in the X-ray lightcurves. According to the spectral shape of these components and spectral fits to the original data, the most probable emission components corresponding to the principal components are inverse-Compton scattering and bremsstrahlung. We find that these compo…
In order to test the recently proposed classification of the radio/X-ray states of the X-ray binary Cyg X-3, we present an analysis of the radio data available for the system at much higher spatial resolutions than used for defining the states. The radio data set consists of archival VLBA data at 5 or 15 GHz and new e-EVN data at 5 GHz. We also present 5 GHz MERLIN observations of an outburst of Cyg X-3. In the X-ray regime we use quasi-simultaneous with radio, monitoring and pointed RXTE observations. We find that when the radio emission from both jet and core is globally considered, the beha…
Stellar companion of a black hole orbiting in an eccentric orbit will experience modulating tidal force with a periodicity same as that of the orbital period. This, in turn, would modulate accretion rates, and the seed photon flux which are inverse Comptonized to produce harder X-rays. By analyzing complete all sky monitor (ASM) data (1.5-12 keV) of RXTE and all sky survey data (15-50 keV) of Swift/BAT we discover this periodicity in several objects. We also estimate eccentricities from the RMS power of the peak around quasi-orbital periods (QOP). Our method provides an independent way to obta…
We have studied the X-ray variability patterns and correlations of the radio and X-ray fluxes in all spectral states of Cyg X-1 using X-ray data from RXTE/ASM, CGRO/BATSE, and Swift/BAT. In the hard state, the dominant spectral variability is a changing of normalisation with fixed spectral shape, while in the intermediate state the slope changes, with a pivot point around 10 keV. In the soft state, the low energy X-ray emission dominates the bolometric flux which is only loosely correlated with the high energy emission. In black hole binaries in the hard state, the radio flux is generally foun…
We analyze all of the available {\it RXTE} observations of Cyg X-3 in order to investigate the connection between the central X-ray source and its surrounding environment. The hardness--intensity diagram of Cyg X-3 displays a "shoe" shape rather than the Q-type shape commonly seen in other black hole X-ray binary, and exhibits no apparent hysteresis effect. During the $γ$-ray outbursts, no existing data are located in the hard and intermediate states, which suggest the absence of a significant population of non-thermal electrons when the source is in these states. For the first time, we presen…
Binary systems with an accreting compact object are a unique chance to investigate the strong, clumpy, line-driven winds of early type supergiants by using the compact object's X-rays to probe the wind structure. We analyze the two-component wind of HDE 226868, the O9.7Iab giant companion of the black hole Cyg X-1 using 4.77 Ms of RXTE observations of the system taken over the course of 16 years. Absorption changes strongly over the 5.6 d binary orbit, but also shows a large scatter at a given orbital phase, especially at superior conjunction. The orbital variability is most prominent when the…
Context: Physics behind the soft X-ray light curve asymmetries in Cygnus X-3, a well-known microquasar, was studied. AIMS: Observable effects of the jet close to the line-of-sight were investigated and interpreted within the frame of light curve physics. METHODS: The path of a hypothetical imprint of the jet, advected by the WR-wind, was computed and its crossing with the line-of-sight during the binary orbit determined. We explore the possibility that physically this 'imprint' is a formation of dense clumps triggered by jet bow shocks in the wind ("clumpy trail"). Models for X-ray continuum a…
By using available archival X-ray data, we significantly extended the list of times of X-ray minima. The new list includes 65 data points obtained by critically re-analyzing RXTE ASM data, 88 data points based on observations by MAXI, and two data points based on observations by SUZAKU and AstroSat. Analyzing the data along with times of X-ray minima available from the literature, we provide the most accurate estimate of the rate of period change to date. We do not confirm existence of a second derivative of the orbital period suggested by some authors earlier. Instead, we find that the change…
Microquasars, X-ray binaries displaying relativistic jets driven by accretion onto a compact object, are some of the most efficient accelerators in the Galaxy. Theoretical models predict Very High Energy (VHE) emission at the base of the jet where particles are accelerated to multi-TeV energies. This emission could be detected by present IACTs. %Moreover, gamma-ray fluxes should increase during flaring events when accretion rates are enhanced. The MAGIC telescope observed the microquasars GRS 1915+105, Cyg X-3, Cyg X-1 and SS433 for ~ 150 hours in total from 2005 to 2008. We triggered our obse…
