We present observations of the 9.8 s X-ray pulsar XTE J1859+083 made with the ASM and PCA on board RXTE, and the WFC on board BeppoSAX. The ASM data cover a 12 year time interval and show that an extended outburst occurred between approximately MJD 50,250 and 50,460 (1996 June 16 to 1997 January 12). The ASM data excluding this outburst interval suggest a possible modulation with a period of 60.65 +/- 0.08 days. Eighteen sets of PCA observations were obtained over an approximately one month interval in 1999. The flux variability measured with the PCA appears consistent with the possible period found with the ASM. The PCA measurements of the pulse period showed it to decrease non-monotonically and then to increase significantly. Doppler shifts due to orbital motion rather than accretion torques appear to be better able to explain the pulse period changes. Observations with the WFC during the extended outburst give a position which is consistent with a previously determined PCA error box, but which has a significantly smaller error. The transient nature of XTE J1859+083 and the length of its pulse period are consistent with it being a Be/neutron star binary. The possible 60.65 day orbital period would be of the expected length for a Be star system with a 9.8 s pulse period.
We report the most recent results of our analysis of X-ray monitoring of new Galactic Black Hole (BH) candidates XTE J1752-225 and MAXI J1659-152 performed by Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We investigate various aspects of the RXTE data including energy and power spectra, variability energy distribution and phase lags between soft and hard energy bands. The sources generally exhibit the spectral states and evolution expected from an accreting stellar mass BH. The energy distribution of different variability components show that the aperiodic noise has a spectrum consistently softer with …
We report results of an extensive analysis of the X-ray nova XTE J1859+226 observed with BeppoSAX and RXTE during its 1999 outburst. We modelled the source spectrum with a multicolour blackbody-like feature plus the generic Comptonization model BMC which has the advantage of providing spectral description of the emitted-radiation properties without assumptions on the underlying physical process. The multicolour component is attributed to the geometrically thin accretion disk, while the Comptonization spectrum is claimed to originate in the innermost sub-Keplerian region of the system (transiti…
We report on the BeppoSAX monitoring of a giant outburst of the transient X-ray pulsar XTE J1946+274 in 1998. The source was detected with a flux of ~ 4 x 10^(-9) erg cm^(-2) s^(-1) (in 0.1 - 120 keV range). The broadband spectrum, typical for accreting pulsars, is well described by a cutoff power law with a cyclotron resonance scattering feature (CRSF) at ~ 38 keV. This value is consistent with earlier reports based on the observations with Suzaku at factor of ten lower luminosity, which implies that the feature is formed close to the neutron star surface rather than in the accretion column. …
We report on the discovery and monitoring observations of a new galactic black hole candidate XTE J1752-223 by Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The new source appeared on the X-ray sky on October 21 2009 and was active for almost 8 months. Phenomenologically, the source exhibited the low-hard/high-soft spectral state bi-modality and the variability evolution during the state transition that matches standard behavior expected from a stellar mass black hole binary. We model the energy spectrum throughout the outburst using a generic Comptonization model assuming that part of the input soft ra…
We use data of the bright atoll source 4U 1705-44 taken with XMM-Newton, BeppoSAX and RXTE both in the hard and in the soft state to perform a self-consistent study of the reflection component in this source. Although the data from these X-ray observatories are not simultaneous, the spectral decomposition is shown to be consistent among the different observations, when the source flux is similar. We therefore select observations performed at similar flux levels in the hard and soft state in order to study the spectral shape in these two states in a broad band (0.1-200 keV) energy range, with g…
The RXTE and Swift observations on the 2009 outburst from a newly discovered transient and black-hole candidate XTE J1652$-$453 are analyzed. The source was observed by RXTE to behave a sequence of spectral states that are typical to the black hole XRBs. During the first 7 observations, the source is diagnosed to stay in a high/soft state, from the spectrum dominated by soft thermal component which contributes an average of $\sim$ 85% to the X-ray flux at 2-20keV, and from the hardness $\sim$ 0.1 showing up in the hardness-intensity diagram (HID). For the last 20 observations the spectral stat…
XTE J1810-189 underwent an outburst in 2008, and was observed over $\sim 100$ d by RXTE. Performing a time-resolved spectral analysis on the photospheric radius expansion burst detected on 2008 May 4, we obtain the source distance in the range of 3.5--8.7 kpc for the first time. During its outburst, XTE J1810-189 did not enter into the high/soft state, and both the soft and hard colours decreased with decreasing flux. The fractional rms remained at high values ($\sim 30$ per cent). The RXTE/PCA spectra for 3-25 keV can be described by an absorbed power-law component with an additional Gaussian…
We observed the new X-ray transient and black-hole candidate XTE J1652-453 simultaneously with XMM-Newton and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The observation was done during the decay of the 2009 outburst, when XTE J1652-453 was in the hard-intermediate state. The spectrum shows a strong and broad iron emission line with an equivalent width of ~ 450 eV. The profile is consistent with that of a line being produced by reflection off the accretion disk, broadened by relativistic effects close to the black hole. The best-fitting inner radius of the accretion disk is ~ 4 gravitational radii…
Context. Of the 13 known accreting millisecond pulsars, only a few showed more than one outburst during the RXTE era. XTE J1751-305 showed, after the main outburst in 2002, other three dim outbursts. We report on the timing analysis of the latest one, occurred on October 8, 2009 and serendipitously observed from its very beginning by RXTE. Aims. The detection of the pulsation during more than one outburst permits to obtain a better constraint of the orbital parameters and their evolution as well as to track the secular spin frequency evolution of the source. Methods. Using the RXTE data of the…
We present an X-ray spectral analysis of the high-mass binary 4U~1700-37 during its hard-soft state evolution. We use the BeppoSAX, Suzaku and RXTE (Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer), Suzaku and BeppoSAX observations for this investigation. We argue that the X-ray broad-band spectra during all spectral states can be adequately reproduced by a model, consisting of a low-temperature Blackbody component, two Comptonized components both due to the presence of a Compton cloud (CC) that up-scatters seed photons of $T_{s1}$~< 1.4 keV, and $T_{s2}<$1 keV, and an iron-line component. We find using this mode…
We carry out a detailed study of the spectral and the timing properties of the stellar-mass black hole candidate XTE J1752-223 during its 2009-10 outburst using RXTE PCA data in the $2.5-25$ keV energy range. Low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) are seen in the power density spectrum (PDS). The spectral analysis is done using two types of models: one is the combined disk black body plus power-law model and the other is Transonic flow solution based Two Component Advective Flow (TCAF) model. RXTE PCA was non-operational during 2009 Nov. 16 to 2010 Jan. 18 and thus we study light c…
We analyze the X-ray spectra of the atoll 4U~1705-44 when the source undergoes the island-banana state transition. We use the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and BeppoSAX observations for this analysis. We demonstrate that the broad-band energy spectral distributions for all evolutinary states can be fitted by a model, consisting two Comptonized components. One arises from the seed photons coming from a neutron star (NS) atmosphere at a temperature kT_{s1}<1.5 keV (herein Comptb) and a second resulting from the seed photons of T_{s2}~1.1-1.3 keV coming from the disk (herein Comptb2). We fou…
Evolution of variability properties of Galactic transient sources is a diagnostic tool to understand various regimes of the accretion flow and its dynamics close to the central black hole. In this paper, we concentrate on the variability properties of the X-ray transient XTE J1650-500 and investigate the evolution of viscous delay, time lag, QPO frequency, and their energy dependence throughout the rising phase as observed by RXTE during its outburst in 2001. Our analysis reveals (1) a delay of 12 \pm 1 days between one day averaged hard (5-12 keV) and soft (1.5-3 keV) photon light-curves as o…
We report on X-ray monitoring observations of the transient black hole candidate (BHC) XTE J1752-223 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The source was discovered on 2009 October 23 and during its low/hard state, which lasted for at least 25 days, all timing and spectral properties were similar to those of Cyg X-1 during its canonical hard state. The combined PCA/HEXTE spectra were well fitted by an absorbed broken powerlaw with a high energy cutoff. When RXTE observations were resumed, after an observational gap due to solar constraint, the source was in the hard intermediate state. …
On 2010 October 13, the X-ray astronomical satellite Rossi XTE, during the observation of the newly discovered accretion powered X-ray pulsar IGR J17480--2446, detected a lunar occultation of the source. From knowledge of lunar topography and Earth, Moon, and spacecraft ephemeris at the epoch of the event, we determined the source position with an accuracy of 40 mas (1σ c.l.), which is interesting, given the very poor imaging capabilities of RXTE (\sim 1\circ). For the first time, using a non-imaging X-ray observatory, the position of an X-ray source with a subarcsecond accuracy is derived, de…
We report on a series of outbursts of the high mass X-ray binary XTE J1946+274 in 2010/2011 as observed with INTEGRAL, RXTE, and Swift. We discuss possible mechanisms resulting in the extraordinary outburst behavior of this source. The X-ray spectra can be described by standard phenomenological models, enhanced by an absorption feature of unknown origin at about 10 keV and a narrow iron K alpha fluorescence line at 6.4 keV, which are variable in flux and pulse phase. We find possible evidence for the presence of a cyclotron resonance scattering feature at about 25 keV at the 93% level. The pre…
We report results of a spectral and timing analysis of the X-ray pulsar XTE J1829-098 using data obtained with the NuSTAR observatory during an outburst in August 2018. A strong absorption feature was detected at the energy of $E_{cyc}\simeq 15$ keV in the source spectrum. This feature was interpreted as a cyclotron resonance scattering line corresponding to the magnetic field strength of the neutron star surface $B\simeq1.7\times10^{12}$ G. The pulse phase-resolved spectroscopy shows that the cyclotron line is significantly detected at all phases of the pulse and its energy and other paramete…
We present an X-ray eclipse timing analysis of the transient low mass X-ray binary XTE J1710-281. We report observations of 57 complete X-ray eclipses, made with the proportional counter array detectors aboard the RXTE satellite. Using the eclipse timing technique, we have derived a constant orbital period of 0.1367109674 (3) d, during the period from MJD 52132 upto MJD 54410; and 1σ limits of -1.6 $\times$ 10^ -12 d d-1 and 0.2 $\times$ 10^ -12 d d-1 , on the period derivative. This puts constraints on the minimum timescale of secular orbital period evolution of 2.34 $\times$ 10^8 yr for a pe…
The evolution of different types of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) and the coupled radiative/physical changes in the accretion disk are still poorly understood. In a few black hole binaries it was found that fast evolution of QPOs is associated with spectral variations. Such studies in other black hole binaries are important to understand the QPO phenomenon. For the black hole transient XTE J1817-330, we study fast QPO transitions and accompanying spectral variations to investigate what causes the spectral variation during the QPO transition. Roy et al. (2011) found QPOs in ten RXTE observ…
XTE J1550-564 is a black hole X-ray binary for which the dynamical characteristics are well established, and the broadband spectral evolution of the source has been well studied. Its orbital inclination is known to be high, at $\sim75^{\circ}$, with the jet estimated to align well with the orbital axis. We explore simultaneous observations made with ASCA and RXTE, covering the $1$--$200$~keV band, during the early stages of the first outburst of XTE J1550-564 in its hard-intermediate state, on 1998-09-23/24. We show that the most up-to-date reflection models, applied to these data, yield an in…
At high luminosities black hole binaries show spectra with a strong disc component accompanied by an equally strong tail where at least some of the electrons are non-thermal. We reanalyze the simultaneous ASCA-RXTE-OSSE data from the 1998 outburst of XTE J1550-564, which span 0.7-1000 keV and remain the best data available of a black hole binary in this state. We reassess the importance of electron-positron pair production using a realistically high value of the source compactness for the first time. The lack of an observable annihilation line together with the observed gamma-ray flux beyond 5…
We study spectral and temporal properties of Galactic short orbital period transient black hole XTE J1118+480 during its 2005 outburst using archival data of RXTE PCA and HEXTE instruments in the combined energy range of $3-100$ keV. Spectral analysis with the physical two-component advective flow (TCAF) model allows us to understand the accretion flow properties of the source. We found that this outburst of XTE J1118+480 is an unconventional outburst as the source was only in the hard state (HS). Our spectral analysis suggests that during the entire outburst, the source was highly dominated b…
Galactic short orbital period black hole candidate (BHC) XTE~J1752-223 was discovered on 2009 Oct 21 by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We study the spectral properties of this outburst using transonic flow solution based two component advective flow (TCAF) model. TCAF model fitted spectrum gives an estimation of the physical flow parameters, such as the Keplerian disk rate, sub-Keplerian halo rate, properties of the so-called {\it{Compton cloud}}, other than the mass of the source and normalization ($N$). $N$ is a standardized ratio of emitted to observed photon flux in TCAF which doe…
We have used archival RXTE PCA data to investigate timing and spectral characteristics of the transient XTE J1817-330. The data pertains to 160 PCA pointed observations made during the outburst period 2006, January 27 to August 2. A detailed analysis of Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in this black hole X-ray binary is carried out. Power density spectra were obtained using the light curves of the source. QPOs have been detected in the 2-8 keV band in 10 of the observations. In 8 of these observations, QPOs are present in the 8-14 keV and in 5 observations in the 15-25 keV band. XTE J1817-33…
With Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) data, we systematically study the cross-correlation and time lag in all spectral states of black hole X-ray binary (BHXB) XTE J1859+226 in detail during its entire 1999-2000 outburst that lasted for 166 days. Anti-correlations and positive correlations and their respective soft and hard X-ray lags are only detected in the first 100 days of the outburst when the luminosity is high. This suggests that the cross-correlations may be related to high luminosity. Positive correlations are detected in every state of XTE J1859+226, viz., hard state, hard-intermed…
We examine the dynamical behavior of accretion flow around XTE J1859+226 during the 1999 outburst by analyzing the entire outburst data ($\sim$ 166 days) from RXTE Satellite. Towards this, we study the hysteresis behavior in the hardness intensity diagram (HID) based on the broadband ($3 - 150$ keV) spectral modeling, spectral signature of jet ejection and the evolution of Quasi-periodic Oscillation (QPO) frequencies using the two-component advective flow model around a black hole. We compute the flow parameters, namely Keplerian accretion rate (${\dot m}_d$), sub-Keplerian accretion rate (${\…
X-ray irradiation in X-ray binaries is thought to control the behavior at the outer disc, which is observable mainly at optical wavelengths. It is generally parameterized phenomenologically, but it can also be predicted from theoretical models of irradiated discs and their coronae/winds. We test these models using five multi-wavelength Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and quasi simultaneous Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) datasets from the black-hole binary XTE J1859$+$226. These show how the reprocessed optical emission changes during outburst as the source fades from the very high/intermediat…
The X-ray transient XTE J1719-291 was discovered with RXTE/PCA during its outburst in 2008 March, which lasted at least 46 days. Its 2-10 keV peak luminosity is 7E35 erg/s assuming a distance of 8 kpc, which classifies the system as a very faint X-ray transient. The outburst was monitored with Swift, RXTE, Chandra and XMM-Newton. We analysed the X-ray spectral evolution during the outburst. We fitted the overall data with a simple power-law model corrected for absorption and found that the spectrum softened with decreasing luminosity. However, the XMM-Newton spectrum can not be fitted with a s…
Galactic black hole transients show many interesting phenomena during outburst decays. We present simultaneous X-ray (RXTE, Swift, and INTEGRAL), and optical/near-infrared (O/NIR) observations (SMARTS) of the X-ray transient XTE J1752-223 during its outburst decay in 2010. The multiwavelength observations over 150 days in 2010 cover the transition from soft to hard spectral state. We discuss the evolution of radio emission is with respect to the O/NIR light curve which shows several flares. One of those flares is bright and long, starting about 60 days after the transition in X-ray timing prop…
We present an updated measurement of orbital period evolution of LMXB XTE J1710-281 by using eclipse timing technique. Using data obtained with XMM-Newton, Suzaku, RXTE, Chandra and AstroSat observatories, we report 21 new measurements of X-ray mid-eclipse times. We have discovered a third orbital period glitch in XTE J1710-281 with an F-test false alarm probability of ~0.7% for occurrence of the third glitch and report detection of four distinct epochs of orbital period in this system. This work presents a more robust estimation of occurrence of the second orbital period glitch. However, the …
Abridged: We present a spectral and temporal analysis of the Cathedral QPO detected in the power density spectra of the microquasar XTE J1859+226 obtained with RXTE. This type of QPO manifests as two peaks with similar amplitudes and harmonically related centroid frequencies (~3 and ~6 Hz). The amplitude of the ~3 Hz feature varies in anticorrelation with the count rate, by about ~50. The ~6 Hz feature shows a slight increase (~7%) of its amplitude with count rate. The RMS-spectra of the two peaks are quite different. The ~3 Hz feature is softer than the other one, and shows a cut-off at an en…
We re-investigated the `spectro-temporal' behaviour of the source XTE J1859+226 in X-rays during its outburst phase in 1999, by analysing the RXTE PCA/HEXTE data in 2 - 150 keV spectral band. Detailed analysis shows that although the evolution pattern of the outburst followed the typical q-shaped profile, an absence of `canonical' soft state and a weak presence of `secondary' emission are observed. The broad-band spectra, modeled with high energy cutoff, shows that the fold-energy increases monotonically in the hard and hard-intermediate states followed by a random variation in the soft-interm…
We present a two-day long RXTE observation and simultaneous Swift data of the bright X-ray transient XTE J1752-223. Spectral and timing properties were stable during the observation. The energy spectrum is well described by a broken power-law with a high energy cut-off. A cold disc (~ 0.3 keV) is observed when Swift/XRT data are considered. The fractional rms amplitude of the aperiodic variability (0.002-128 Hz) is 48.2 +- 0.1% and it is not energy dependent. The continuum of the power density spectrum can be fitted by using four broad-band Lorentzians. A high frequency (~ 21 Hz) component and…
The physical mechanisms responsible for production of the non-thermal emission in accreting black holes (BH) should be imprinted in the observational apperances of the power law tails in the X-ray spectra from these objects. Different spectral states exhibited by galactic BH binaries allow examination of the photon upscattering under different accretion regimes. We revisit the data collected by Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) from the BH X-ray binary XTE J1550-564 during two periods of X-ray activity in 1998 and 2000 focusing on the behavior of the high energy cutoff of the power law part o…
We investigate a sample of eleven Galactic X-ray sources recently discovered with INTEGRAL or RXTE with the goal of identifying their optical and/or near-infrared (NIR) counterpart. For this purpose new Chandra positions of nine objects are presented together with follow-up observations of all the targets in the optical and NIR. For the four sources IGR J16194-2810, IGRJ 16479-4514, IGR J16500-3307 and IGR J19308+530, the Chandra position confirms an existing association with an optical/NIR object, while for two sources (XTE J1716-389 and 18490-0000) it rules out previously proposed counterpar…
We present an analysis of the spectral properties observed in X-rays from active galactic nucleus BL Lacertae using RXTE, Suzaku, ASCA, BeppoSAX, and Swift observations. The total time covered by these observations is approximately 20 years. We show that this source undergoes X-ray spectral transitions from the low hard state (LHS) through the intermediate state (IS) to the high soft state (HSS) during these observations. During the RXTE observations (1997 -- 2001, {180 ks, for a total 145 datasets}), the source was approximately 75%, 20% and only 5 of the time in the IS, LHS, and HSS, respect…
We report here an investigation of the X-ray eclipse transitions of the high mass X-ray binary pulsar Cen X-3 in different intensity states. Long term light curve of Cen X-3 obtained with RXTE-ASM spanning for more than 5000 days shows strong aperiodic flux variations with low and high states. We have investigated the eclipse transitions of Cen X-3 in different intensity states with data obtained from pointed observations with the more sensitive instruments on board ASCA, BeppoSAX, XMM-Newton, Chandra and RXTE. We found a very clear trend of sharp eclipse transitions in the high state and long…
4U 2206+54 is a high mass X-ray binary which has been suspected to contain a neutron star accreting from the wind of its companion BD +53 2790. Reig et al. have recently detected 5560 s period pulsations in both RXTE and INTEGRAL observations which they conclude are due to the spin of the neutron star. We present observations made with Suzaku which are contemporaneous with their RXTE observation of this source. We find strong pulsations at a period of 5554 +/- 9 s in agreement with their results. We also present a reanalysis of BeppoSAX observations of 4U 2206+54 made in 1998, in which we find…
XTE J1818-245 is an X-ray nova that experienced an outburst in 2005, first seen by the RXTE satellite. The source was observed simultaneously at various wavelengths up to soft gamma-rays with the INTEGRAL satellite, from 2005 February to September. X-ray novae are extreme systems that often harbor a black hole, and are known to emit throughout the electromagnetic spectrum when in outburst. We analyzed radio, (N)IR, optical, X-ray and soft gamma-ray observations and constructed simultaneous broad-band X-ray spectra. Analyzing both the light curves in various energy ranges and the hardness-inten…
We explore the accretion properties of the black hole X-ray binary \j1550\ during its outbursts in 1998/99 and 2000. We model the disk, corona, and reflection components of X-ray spectra taken with the {\it Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer} (\rxte), using the {\tt relxill} suite of reflection models. The key result of our modeling is that the reflection spectrum in the very soft state is best explained by disk self-irradiation, i.e., photons from the inner disk are bent by the strong gravity of the black hole, and reflected off the disk surface. This is the first known detection of thermal disk rad…
We fitted all of the several hundred {\it RXTE} PCA spectra of the Crab individually to a simple power-law model; the total number of counts in the composite spectrum is $>10^9$. We then used the spectrum of residuals to derive a calibration tool, called {\tt pcacorr}, that we apply to large samples of spectra for GX~339--4, H1743--322, and XTE J1550--564. Application of the tool improved the quality of all the fits, and the improvement is dramatic for spectra with $\gtrsim10^7$ counts. The Crab residual spectrum is somewhat different for each of the five PCA detectors, but it was relatively s…
We report on our attempt to understand the outbursting profile of Galactic Black Hole (GBH) sources, keeping in mind the evolution of temporal and spectral features during the outburst. We present results of evolution of Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPOs), spectral states and possible connection with Jet ejections during the outburst phase. Further, we attempt to connect the observed X-ray variabilities (i.e., `class' / `structured' variabilities, similar to GRS 1915+105) with spectral states of BH sources. Towards these studies, we consider three Black Hole sources that have undergone single …
The first extragalactic X-ray binary, LMC X-1, was discovered in 1969. In the 1980s, its compact primary was established as the fourth dynamical black-hole candidate. Recently, we published accurate values for the mass of the black hole and the orbital inclination angle of the binary system. Building on these results, we have analyzed 53 X-ray spectra obtained by RXTE and, using a selected sample of 18 of these spectra, we have determined the dimensionless spin parameter of the black hole to be a* = 0.92(-0.07,+0.05). This result takes into account all sources of observational and model-parame…
