We present and analyze a high-order discontinuous Galerkin method for the space discretization of the wave propagation model in thermo-poroelastic media. The proposed scheme supports general polytopal grids. Stability analysis and $hp$-version error estimates in suitable energy norms are derived for the semi-discrete problem. The fully-discrete scheme is then obtained based on employing an implicit Newmark-$β$ time integration scheme. A wide set of numerical simulations is reported, both for the verification of the theoretical estimates and for examples of physical interest. A comparison with the results of the poroelastic model is provided too, highlighting the differences between the predictive capabilities of the two models.
This paper is devoted to a weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method for linear poroelasticity problems where weakly defined divergence and gradient operators over discontinuous functions are introduced. We establish both the continuous and discrete time WG schemes, and obtain their optimal convergence order estimates in a discrete $H^1$ norm for the displacement and in an $H^1$ type and $L^2$ norms for the pressure. Finally, numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the theoretical error results in different kinds of meshes which shows the WG flexibility for mesh selections, and to ver…
We present and analyze a discontinuous Galerkin method for the numerical modelling of the non-linear fully-coupled thermo-poroelastic problem. For the spatial discretization, we design a high-order discontinuous Galerkin method on polygonal and polyhedral grids based on a novel four-field formulation of the problem. To handle the non-linear convective transport term in the energy conservation equation we adopt a fixed-point linearization strategy. We perform a robust stability analysis for the linearized semi-discrete problem under mild requirements on the problem data. A priori hp-version err…
The quasi-static multiple network poroelastic theory (MPET) model, first introduced in the context of geomechanics, has recently found new applications in medicine. In practice, the parameters in the MPET equations can vary over several orders of magnitude which makes their stable discretization and fast solution a challenging task. Here, a new efficient parameter-robust hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method, which also features fluid mass conservation, is proposed for the MPET model. Its stability analysis which is crucial for the well-posedness of the discrete problem is performed and cos…
We develop a numerical solver for three-dimensional wave propagation in coupled poroelastic-elastic media, based on a high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method, with the Biot poroelastic wave equation formulated as a first order conservative velocity/strain hyperbolic system. To derive an upwind numerical flux, we find an exact solution to the Riemann problem, including the poroelastic-elastic interface; we also consider attenuation mechanisms both in Biot's low- and high-frequency regimes. Using either a low-storage explicit or implicit-explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta scheme, according to the…
The aim of this work is to introduce and analyze a finite element discontinuous Galerkin method on polygonal meshes for the numerical discretization of acoustic waves propagation through poroelastic materials. Wave propagation is modeled by the acoustics equations in the acoustic domain and the low-frequency Biot's equations in the poroelastic one. The coupling is realized by means of (physically consistent) transmission conditions, imposed on the interface between the domains, modeling different pore configurations. For the space discretization, we introduce and analyze a high-order discontin…
This paper presents a model where thermo-hydro-mechanical processes are coupled to a deformation model for preexisting fractures. The model is formulated within a discrete-fracture-matrix framework where the rock matrix and the fractures are considered as individual subdomains, and interaction between them takes place on the matrix-fracture interfaces. A finite volume discretisation implemented in the simulation toolbox PorePy is presented and applied in a simulation showcasing the effects of the different mechanisms on fracture deformation governed by contact mechanics, as well as their diffe…
We consider the systematic numerical approximation of Biot's quasistatic model for the consolidation of a poroelastic medium. Various discretization schemes have been analysed for this problem and inf-sup stable finite elements have been found suitable to avoid spurios pressure oscillations in the initial phase of the evolution. In this paper, we first clarify the role of the inf-sup condition for the well-posedness of the continuous problem and discuss the choice of appropriate initial conditions. We then develop an abstract error analysis that allows us to analyse some approximation schemes …

Convection-driven cooling in porous media influences thermo-poro-mechanical stresses, thereby causing deformation. These processes are strongly influenced by the presence of fractures, which dominate flow and heat transfer. At the same time, the fractures deform and propagate in response to changes in the stress state. Mathematically, the model governing the physics is tightly coupled and must account for the strong discontinuities introduced by the fractures. Over the last decade, and motivated by a number of porous media applications, research into such coupled models has advanced modelling …
We present an embedded-hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the total pressure formulation of the quasi-static poroelasticity model. Although the displacement and the Darcy velocity are approximated by discontinuous piece-wise polynomials, $H(\text{div})$-conformity of these unknowns is enforced by Lagrange multipliers. The semi-discrete problem is shown to be stable and the fully discrete problem is shown to be well-posed. Additionally, space-time a priori error estimates are derived, and confirmed by numerical examples, that show that the proposed discretization is f…
We formulate a numerical method for solving the two-phase flow poroelasticity equations. The scheme employs the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method and a sequential time-stepping method. The unknowns are the phase pressures and the displacement. Existence of the solution is proved. Three-dimensional numerical results show the accuracy and robustness of the proposed method.
In this work we develop an a posteriori error analysis of a conforming mixed finite element method for solving the coupled problem arising in the interaction between a free fluid and a fluid in a poroelastic medium on isotropic meshes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\in\{2,3\}$. The approach utilizes the semi-discrete formulation proposed by Ilona Ambartsumyan et al. in (Numerische Mathematik, October 2017). The a posteriori error estimate is based on a suitable evaluation on the residual of the finite element solution. It is proven that the a posteriori error estimate provided in this paper is both reli…
Poroelasticity theory models the dynamics of porous, fluid-saturated media. It was pioneered by Maurice Biot in the 1930s through 1960s, and has applications in several fields, including geophysics and modeling of in vivo bone. A wide variety of methods have been used to model poroelasticity, including finite difference, finite element, pseudospectral, and discontinuous Galerkin methods. In this work we use a Cartesian-grid high-resolution finite volume method to numerically solve Biot's equations in the time domain for orthotropic materials, with the stiff relaxation source term in the equati…

We consider the quasi-static Biot's consolidation model in a three-field formulation with the three unknown physical quantities of interest being the displacement $\boldsymbol{u}$ of the solid matrix, the seepage velocity $\boldsymbol{v}$ of the fluid and the pore pressure $p$. As conservation of fluid mass is a leading physical principle in poromechanics, we preserve this property using an $\boldsymbol{H}(\operatorname{div})$-conforming ansatz for $\boldsymbol{u}$ and $\boldsymbol{v}$ together with an appropriate pressure space. This results in Stokes and Darcy stability and exact, that is, p…

High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations require the positivity of thermodynamic quantities in order to guarantee their well-posedness. In this work, we introduce a positivity limiting strategy for entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin discretizations constructed by blending high order solutions with a low order positivity-preserving discretization. The proposed low order discretization is semi-discretely entropy stable, and the proposed limiting strategy is positivity preserving for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes…
We study the numerical approximation by space-time finite element methods of a multi-physics system coupling hyperbolic elastodynamics with parabolic transport and modeling poro- and thermoelasticity. The equations are rewritten as a first-order system in time. Discretizations by continuous Galerkin methods in time and inf-sup stable pairs of finite element spaces for the spatial variables are investigated. Optimal order error estimates are proved by an analysis in weighted norms that depict the energy of the system's unknowns. A further important ingredient and challenge of the analysis is th…
