We study the numerical approximation by space-time finite element methods of a multi-physics system coupling hyperbolic elastodynamics with parabolic transport and modeling poro- and thermoelasticity. The equations are rewritten as a first-order system in time. Discretizations by continuous Galerkin methods in time and inf-sup stable pairs of finite element spaces for the spatial variables are investigated. Optimal order error estimates are proved by an analysis in weighted norms that depict the energy of the system's unknowns. A further important ingredient and challenge of the analysis is the control of the couplings terms. The techniques developed here can be generalized to other families of Galerkin space discretizations and advanced models. The error estimates are confirmed by numerical experiments, also for higher order piecewise polynomials in time and space. The latter lead to algebraic systems with complex block structure and put a facet of challenge on the design of iterative solvers. An efficient solution technique is referenced.
This paper is concerned with the numerical approximation of the Dirichlet initial-boundary-value problem of nonlinear pseudo-parabolic equations with spectral methods. Error estimates for the semidiscrete Galerkin and collocation schemes based on Jacobi polynomials are derived.
We analyze Galerkin discretizations of a new well-posed mixed space-time variational formulation of parabolic PDEs. For suitable pairs of finite element trial spaces, the resulting Galerkin operators are shown to be uniformly stable. The method is compared to two related space-time discretization methods introduced in [IMA J. Numer. Anal., 33(1) (2013), pp. 242-260] by R. Andreev and in [Comput. Methods Appl. Math., 15(4) (2015), pp. 551-566] by O. Steinbach.
A linearized numerical scheme is proposed to solve the nonlinear time fractional parabolic problems with time delay. The scheme is based on the standard Galerkin finite element method in the spatial direction, the fractional Crank-Nicolson method and extrapolation methods in the temporal direction. A novel discrete fractional Grönwall inequality is established. Thanks to the inequality, the error estimate of fully discrete scheme is obtained. Several numerical examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the fully discrete numerical method.
In this paper, we develop an oscillation free local discontinuous Galerkin (OFLDG) method for solving nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations. Following the idea of our recent work [J. Lu, Y. Liu, and C.-W. Shu, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 59(2021), pp. 1299-1324.], we add the damping terms to the LDG scheme to control the spurious oscillations when solutions have a large gradient. The $L^2$-stability and optimal priori error estimates for the semi-discrete scheme are established. The numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method maintains the high-order accuracy and controls the spurio…
The conforming finite element Galerkin method is applied to discretise in the spatial direction for a class of strongly nonlinear parabolic problems. Using elliptic projection of the associated linearised stationary problem with Gronwall type result, optimal error estimates are derived, when piecewise polynomials of degree $r\geq 1$ are used, which improve upon earlier results of Axelsson [Numer. Math. 28 (1977), pp. 1-14] requiring for 2d $r\geq 2$ and for 3d $r\geq 3.$ Based on quasi-projection technique introduced by Douglas {\it et al.} [Math. Comp.32 (1978),pp. 345-362], superconvergence …
Intrusive Uncertainty Quantification methods such as stochastic Galerkin are gaining popularity, whereas the classical stochastic Galerkin approach is not ensured to preserve hyperbolicity of the underlying hyperbolic system. We apply a modification of this method that uses a slope limiter to retain admissible solutions of the system, while providing high-order approximations in the physical and stochastic space. This is done using a spatial discontinuous Galerkin scheme and a Multi-Element stochastic Galerkin ansatz in the random space. We analyze the convergence of the resulting scheme and a…
A systematic numerical study on weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method for second order linear parabolic problems is presented by allowing polynomial approximations with various degrees for each local element. Convergence of both semidiscrete and fully discrete WG solutions are established in $L^{\infty}(L^2)$ and $L^{\infty}(H^1)$ norms for a general WG element $({\cal P}_{k}(K),\;{\cal P}_{j}(\partial K),\;\big[{\cal P}_{l}(K)\big]^2)$, where $k\ge 1$, $j\ge 0$ and $l\ge 0$ are arbitrary integers. The fully discrete space-time discretization is based on a first order in time Euler scheme. …
The discontinuous Galerkin (DG) time-stepping method applied to abstract evolution equation of parabolic type is studied using a variational approach. We establish the inf-sup condition or Babuška--Brezzi condition for the DG bilinear form. Then, a nearly best approximation property and a nearly symmetric error estimate are obtained as corollaries. Moreover, the optimal order error estimates under appropriate regularity assumption on the solution are derived as direct applications of the standard interpolation error estimates. Our method of analysis is new for the DG time-stepping method; it d…
We consider fully discrete time-space approximations of abstract linear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) consisting of an $hp$-version discontinuous Galerkin (DG) time stepping scheme in conjunction with standard (conforming) Galerkin discretizations in space. We derive abstract computable a posteriori error bounds resulting, for instance, in concrete bounds in $L_{\infty}(I;L_2(Ω))$- and $L_{2}(I;H^{1}(Ω))$-type norms when $I$ is the temporal and $Ω$ the spatial domain for the PDE. We base our methodology for the analysis on a novel space-time reconstruction approach. Our appro…
A special place in climatology is taken by the so-called conceptual climate models. These relatively simple sets of differential equations can successfully describe single mechanisms of climate. We focus on one family of such models based on the global energy balance. This gives rise to a degenerate nonlocal parabolic nonlinear partial differential equation for the zonally averaged temperature. We construct a fully discrete numerical method that has an optimal spectral accuracy in space and second order in time. Our scheme is based on the Galerkin formulation of the Legendre basis expansion, w…
The analyses of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods of any order k for solving elliptic and parabolic problems with Dirac line sources are presented. For the steady state case, we prove convergence of the method by deriving a priori error estimates in the L2 norm and in weighted energy norms. In addition, we prove almost optimal local error estimates in the energy norm for any approximation order. Further, almost optimal local error estimates in the L2 norm are obtained for the case of piecewise linear approximations whereas suboptimal error bounds in the L2 norm are shown for any …
Fourier continuation is an approach used to create periodic extensions of non-periodic functions in order to obtain highly-accurate Fourier expansions. These methods have been used in PDE-solvers and have demonstrated high-order convergence and spectrally accurate dispersion relations in numerical experiments. Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods are increasingly used for solving PDEs and, as all Galerkin formulations, come with a strong framework for proving stability and convergence. Here we propose the use of Fourier continuation in forming a new basis for the DG framework.
We present a posteriori error estimates for inconsistent and non-hierarchical Galerkin methods for linear parabolic problems, allowing them to be used in conjunction with very general mesh modification for the first time. We treat schemes which are non-hierarchical in the sense that the spatial Galerkin spaces used on consecutive time-steps may be completely unrelated from one another. The practical interest of this setting is demonstrated by applying our results to finite element methods on moving meshes and using the estimators to drive an adaptive algorithm based on a virtual element method…
In this paper, we theoretically and numerically verify that the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods with central fluxes for linear hyperbolic equations on non-uniform meshes have sub-optimal convergence properties when measured in the $L^2$-norm for even degree polynomial approximations. On uniform meshes, the optimal error estimates are provided for arbitrary number of cells in one and multi-dimensions, improving previous results. The theoretical findings are found to be sharp and consistent with numerical results.

In this work we focus on the preconditioning of a Galerkin space-time isogeometric discretization of the heat equation. Exploiting the tensor product structure of the basis functions in the parametric domain, we propose a preconditioner that is the sum of Kronecker products of matrices and that can be efficiently applied thanks to an extension of the classical Fast Diagonalization method. The preconditioner is robust w.r.t. the polynomial degree of the spline space and the time required for the application is almost proportional to the number of degrees-of-freedom, for a serial execution. By i…

In this paper, we present and analyze a weak Galerkin finite element (WG) method for solving the symmetric hyperbolic systems. This method is highly flexible by allowing the use of discontinuous finite elements on element and its boundary independently of each other. By introducing special weak derivative, we construct a stable weak Galerkin scheme and derive the optimal $L_2$-error estimate of $O(h^{k+\frac{1}{2}})$-order for the discrete solution when the $k$-order polynomials are used for $k\geq 0$. As application, we discuss this WG method for solving the singularly perturbed convection-di…
We investigate the propagation of uncertainties in the Aw-Rascle-Zhang model, which belongs to a class of second order traffic flow models described by a system of nonlinear hyperbolic equations. The stochastic quantities are expanded in terms of wavelet-based series expansions. Then, they are projected to obtain a deterministic system for the coefficients in the truncated series. Stochastic Galerkin formulations are presented in conservative form and for smooth solutions also in the corresponding non-conservative form. This allows to obtain stabilization results, when the system is relaxed to…

The aim of this paper is to apply a high-order discontinuous-in-time scheme to second-order hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). We first discretize the PDEs in time while keeping the spatial differential operators undiscretized. The well-posedness of this semi-discrete scheme is analyzed and a priori error estimates are derived in the energy norm. We then combine this $hp$-version discontinuous Galerkin method for temporal discretization with an $H^1$-conforming finite element approximation for the spatial variables to construct a fully discrete scheme. A prior error estimates ar…
In this paper, we develop an adaptive multiresolution discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for scalar hyperbolic conservation laws in multidimensions. Compared with previous work for linear hyperbolic equations \cite{guo2016transport, guo2017adaptive}, a class of interpolatory multiwavelets are applied to efficiently compute the nonlinear integrals over elements and edges in DG schemes. The resulting algorithm, therefore can achieve similar computational complexity as the sparse grid DG method for smooth solutions. Theoretical and numerical studies are performed taking into consideration of accu…
