We investigate the propagation of uncertainties in the Aw-Rascle-Zhang model, which belongs to a class of second order traffic flow models described by a system of nonlinear hyperbolic equations. The stochastic quantities are expanded in terms of wavelet-based series expansions. Then, they are projected to obtain a deterministic system for the coefficients in the truncated series. Stochastic Galerkin formulations are presented in conservative form and for smooth solutions also in the corresponding non-conservative form. This allows to obtain stabilization results, when the system is relaxed to a first-order model. Computational tests illustrate the theoretical results.
In this paper, we derive second order hydrodynamic traffic models from kinetic-controlled equations for driver-assist vehicles. At the vehicle level we take into account two main control strategies synthesising the action of adaptive cruise controls and cooperative adaptive cruise controls. The resulting macroscopic dynamics fulfil the anisotropy condition introduced in the celebrated Aw-Rascle-Zhang model. Unlike other models based on heuristic arguments, our approach unveils the main physical aspects behind frequently used hydrodynamic traffic models and justifies the structure of the result…
This paper deals with the Aw-Rascle-Zhang model for traffic flow on uni-directional road networks. For the conservation of the mass and the generalized momentum, we construct weak solutions for Riemann problems at the junctions. We particularly focus on a novel approximation to the homogenized pressure by introducing an additional equation for the propagation of a reference pressure. The resulting system of coupled conservation laws is then solved using an appropriate numerical scheme of Godunov type. Numerical simulations show that the proposed approximation is able to approximate the homogen…

We adapt a symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method using a patch reconstructed approximation space to solve elliptic eigenvalue problems, including both second and fourth order problems in 2D and 3D. It is a direct extension of the method recently proposed to solve corresponding boundary value problems, and the optimal error estimates of the approximation to eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are instant consequences from existing results. The method enjoys the advantage that it uses only one degree of freedom on each element to achieve very high order accuracy, which is highly pr…
This paper presents the first systematic study on the fundamental problem of seeking optimal cell average decomposition (OCAD), which arises from constructing efficient high-order bound-preserving (BP) numerical methods within Zhang--Shu framework. Since proposed in 2010, Zhang--Shu framework has attracted extensive attention and been applied to developing many high-order BP discontinuous Galerkin and finite volume schemes for various hyperbolic equations. An essential ingredient in the framework is the decomposition of the cell averages of the numerical solution into a convex combination of t…
Since proposed in [X. Zhang and C.-W. Shu, J. Comput. Phys., 229: 3091--3120, 2010], the Zhang--Shu framework has attracted extensive attention and motivated many bound-preserving (BP) high-order discontinuous Galerkin and finite volume schemes for various hyperbolic equations. A key ingredient in the framework is the decomposition of the cell averages of the numerical solution into a convex combination of the solution values at certain quadrature points, which helps to rewrite high-order schemes as convex combinations of formally first-order schemes. The classic convex decomposition originall…
