The roots of Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods is usually attributed to Reed and Hills in a paper published in 1973 on the numerical approximation of the neutron transport equation [18]. In fact, the adventure really started with a rather thoroughfull series of five papers by Cockburn and Shu in the late 80's [7, 5, 9, 6, 8]. Then, the fame of the method, which could be seen as a compromise between Finite Elements (the center of the method being a weak formulation) and Finite Volumes (the basis functions are defined cell-wise, the cells being the elements of the primal mesh) increased and slowly investigated successfully all the domains of Partial Differential Equations numerical integration. In particular, one can cite the ground papers for the common treatment of convection-diffusion equations [4, 3] or the treatment of pure elliptic equations [2, 17]. For more information on the history of Discontinuous Galerkin method, please refer to section 1.1 of [15]. Today, DG methods are widely used in all kind of manners and have applications in almost all fields of applied mathematics. (TODO: cite applications and structured/unstructured meshes, steady/unsteady, etc...). The methods is now mature enough to deserve entire text books, among which I cite a reference book on Nodal DG Methods by Henthaven and Warburton [15] with the ground basis of DG integration, numerical analysis of its linear behavior and generalization to multiple dimensions. Lately, since 2010, thanks to a ground work of Zhang and Shu [26, 27, 25, 28, 29], Discontinuous Galerkin methods are eventually able to combine high order accuracy and certain preservation of convex constraints, such as the positivity of a given quantity, for example. These new steps forward are very promising since it brings us very close to the "Ultimate Conservative Scheme", [23, 1].
In this work we develop a methodology to approximate the covariance matrix associated to the simulation of water diffusion inside the brain tissue. The computation is based on an implementation of the Discontinuous Galerkin method of the diffusion equation, in accord with the physical phenomenon. The implementation in in parallel using GPUs in the CUDA language. Numerical results are presented in 2D problems.
A novel approach for the stabilization of the discontinuous Galerkin method based on the Dafermos entropy rate crition is presented. The approach is centered around the efficient solution of linear or nonlinear optimization problems in every timestep as a correction to the basic discontinuous Galerkin scheme. The thereby enforced Dafermos criterion results in improved stability compared to the basic method while retaining the order of the method in numerical experiments. Further modification of the optimization problem allows also to enforce classical entropy inequalities for the scheme. The p…
We provide two new classes of moment models for linear kinetic equations in slab and three-dimensional geometry. They are based on classical finite elements and low-order discontinuous-Galerkin approximations on the unit sphere. We investigate their realizability conditions and other basic properties. Numerical tests show that these models are more efficient than classical full-moment models in a space-homogeneous test, when the analytical solution is not smooth.
We present a class of Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the incompressible flow with moving boundaries and interfaces including two-phase flow with surface tension.
In this article, a reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator of residual type is derived for a class of discontinuous Galerkin methods for the frictional contact problem with reduced normal compliance which is modeled as a quasi-variational inequality. We further derive a priori error estimates in the energy norm under the minimal regularity assumption on the exact solution. The convergence behavior of error over uniform mesh and the performance of error estimator are illustrated by the numerical results.
In this paper we study the finite element approximation of systems of second-order nonlinear hyperbolic equations. The proposed numerical method combines a $hp$-version discontinuous Galerkin finite element approximation in the time direction with an $H^1(Ω)$-conforming finite element approximation in the spatial variables. Error bounds at the temporal nodal points are derived under a weak restriction on the temporal step size in terms of the spatial mesh size. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the theoretical results.
We develop and study a time-space discrete discontinuous Galerkin finite elements method to approximate the solution of one-dimensional nonlinear wave equations. We show that the numerical scheme is stable if a nonuniform time mesh is considered. We also investigate the blow-up phenomena and we prove that under weak convergence assumptions, the numerical blow-up time tends toward the theoretical one. The validity of our results is confirmed throughout several numerical examples and benchmarks.
A $p$-adaptive discontinuous Galerkin time-domain method is developed to obtain high-order solutions to electromagnetic scattering problems. A novel feature of the proposed method is the use of divergence error to drive the $p$-adaptive method. The nature of divergence error is explored and that it is a direct consequence of the act of discretization is established. Its relation with relative truncation error is formed which enables the use of divergence error as an inexpensive proxy to truncation error. Divergence error is used as an indicator to dynamically identify and assign spatial operat…
A new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element (HMDGFE) method is constructed for incompressible miscible displacement problem. In this method, the hybrid mixed finite element (HMFE) procedure is considered to solve pressure and velocity equations, and a new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin procedure is constructed to solve the concentration equation with upwind technique. Compared with other traditional discontinuous Galerkin methods, the new method can reach global systems with less unknowns and sparser stencils. The consistency and conservation of the method are analyzed, the s…
Existing a priori convergence results of the discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin method to solve the problem of linear elasticity are improved. Using duality arguments, we show that higher convergence rates for the displacement can be obtained. Post-processing techniques are introduced in order to prove superconvergence and numerical experiments {\color{black} confirm} our theory.
A discontinuous Galerkin pressure correction numerical method for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is formulated and analyzed. We prove unconditional stability of the propose scheme. Convergence of the discrete velocity is established by deriving a priori error estimates. Numerical results verify the convergence rates.
In this paper, discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods are applied to one dimensional Rosenau equation. Theoretical results including consistency, a priori bounds and optimal error estimates are established for both semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes. Numerical experiments are performed to validate the theoretical results. The decay estimates are verified numerically for the Rosenau equation.
A port-Hamiltonian (pH) system formulation is a geometrical notion used to formulate conservation laws for various physical systems. The distributed parameter port-Hamiltonian formulation models infinite dimensional Hamiltonian dynamical systems that have a non-zero energy flow through the boundaries. In this paper we propose a novel framework for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations of pH-systems. Linking DG methods with pH-systems gives rise to compatible structure preserving finite element discretizations along with flexibility in terms of geometry and function spaces of the variable…
In this paper we propose a novel regularization strategy for the local discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the context of level-set reinitialization. The novel regularization idea works in analogy to shock-capturing schemes for discontinuous Galerkin methods, which are based on finite volume sub-cells. In this spirit, the local discontinuous Galerkin method is combined with an upwind/downwind finite volume sub-cell discretization, which is applied in areas of low regularity. To ensure the applicability on unstructured meshes, the finite volume discretization …
We present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.
We formulate a numerical method for solving the two-phase flow poroelasticity equations. The scheme employs the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method and a sequential time-stepping method. The unknowns are the phase pressures and the displacement. Existence of the solution is proved. Three-dimensional numerical results show the accuracy and robustness of the proposed method.
A considerable amount of attention has been given to discontinuous Galerkin methods for hyperbolic problems in numerical relativity, showing potential advantages of the methods in dealing with hydrodynamical shocks and other discontinuities. This paper investigates discontinuous Galerkin methods for the solution of elliptic problems in numerical relativity. We present a novel hp-adaptive numerical scheme for curvilinear and non-conforming meshes. It uses a multigrid preconditioner with a Chebyshev or Schwarz smoother to create a very scalable discontinuous Galerkin code on generic domains. The…
In this paper, we provide a framework of designing the local discontinuous Galerkin scheme for integral fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{s}$ with $s\in(0,1)$ in two dimensions. We theoretically prove and numerically verify the numerical stability and convergence of the scheme with the convergence rate no worse than $\mathcal{O}(h^{k+\frac{1}{2}})$.
This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of a piecewise constant discontinuous Galerkin method for time fractional subdiffusion problems. The regularity of weak solution is firstly established by using variational approach and Mittag-Leffler function. Then several optimal error estimates are derived with low regularity data. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to verify the theoretical results.
The pressure correction scheme is combined with interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations. Optimal error estimates are derived for the velocity in the L$^2$ norm in time and in space. Error bounds for the discrete time derivative of the velocity and for the pressure are also established.
The hybrid Raviart-Thomas mixed discontinuous Galerkin (HRTMDG) method is proposed for solving the Helmholtz equation. With a new energy norm, we establish the existence and uniqueness of the HRTMDG method, and give its convergence analysis. The corresponding error estimate shows that the HRTMDG method has an optimal $L^2$-norm convergence accuracy which is independent of wavenumber.
We devise and analyze a class of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods for nonlinear and nonsmooth variational problems. Discrete duality relations are derived that lead to optimal error estimates in the case of total-variation regularized minimization or obstacle problems. The analysis provides explicit estimates that precisely determine the role of stabilization parameters. Numerical experiments suppport the optimality of the estimates.
We generalize the energy-based discontinuous Galerkin method proposed in [SIAM J. Num. Anal., 53(6):2705-2726, 2015.] to second-order semilinear wave equations. A stability and convergence analysis is presented along with numerical experiments demonstrating optimal convergence for certain choices of the interelement fluxes. Applications to the sine-Gordon equation include simulations of breathers, kink, and anti-kink solitons.
For the stationary advection-diffusion problem the standard continuous Galerkin method is unstable without some additional control on the mesh or method. The interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method is stable but at the expense of an increased number of degrees of freedom. The hybrid method proposed in [5] combines the computational complexity of the continuous method with the stability of the discontinuous method without a significant increase in degrees of freedom. We discuss the implementation of this method using the finite element library deal.ii and present some numerical experimen…
We present a strongly conservative and pressure-robust hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled time-dependent Navier-Stokes and Darcy problem. We show existence and uniqueness of a solution and present an optimal a priori error analysis for the fully discrete problem when using Backward Euler time stepping. The theoretical results are verified by numerical examples.
In this paper, we investigate a Local Discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) approximation for systems with balanced Orlicz-structure. We propose a new numerical flux, which yields optimal convergence rates for linear ansatz functions. In particular, our approach yields a unified treatment for problems with $(p,δ)$-structure for arbitrary $p \in (1,\infty)$ and $δ\ge 0$.
We introduce a homogeneous multigrid method in the sense that it uses the same embedded discontinuous Galerkin (EDG) discretization scheme for Poisson's equation on all levels. In particular, we use the injection operator developed in [LuRK2020] for HDG and prove optimal convergence of the method under the assumption of elliptic regularity. Numerical experiments underline our analytical findings.
The mixed form of the Cahn-Hilliard equations is discretized by the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method. For any chemical energy density, existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution is obtained. The scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable. Convergence of the method is obtained by deriving a priori error estimates that are valid for the Ginzburg-Lindau chemical energy density and for convex domains. The paper also contains discrete functional tools, namely discrete Agmon and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities, which are proved to be valid in the hybridizable discontinuous Gale…
In this work, we propose and investigate stable high-order collocation-type discretisations of the discontinuous Galerkin method on equidistant and scattered collocation points. We do so by incorporating the concept of discrete least squares into the discontinuous Galerkin framework. Discrete least squares approximations allow us to construct stable and high-order accurate approximations on arbitrary collocation points, while discrete least squares quadrature rules allow us their stable and exact numerical integration. Both methods are computed efficiently by using bases of discrete orthogonal…
A discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for solving semilinear elliptic problem is developed and analyzed in this paper. The DG finite element discretizations are established, and the corresponding existence and uniqueness theorem is proved by using Brouwer's fixed point method. Some optimal priori error estimates under both DG norm and $L^2$ norm are presented. Numerical results are also shown to confirm the efficiency of the proposed approach.
In this paper, a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method of Nitsche's version for the Steklov eigenvalue problem in linear elasticity is presented. The a priori error estimates are analyzed under a low regularity condition, and the robustness with respect to nearly incompressible materials (locking-free) is proven. Furthermore, some numerical experiments are reported to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.
We present a computational model of thin elastic bilayers that undergo large bending isometric deformations when actuated by non-mechanical stimuli. We propose a discontinuous Galerkin approximation of the variational formulation discussed in Bartels et al. (2018). We showcase its advantages and good computational performance with configurations of interest in both engineering and medicine and either Dirichlet or free boundary conditions.
In this paper, we study the convergence of adaptive mixed interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for H(curl)-elliptic problems. We first get the mixed model of H(curl)-elliptic problem by introducing a new intermediate variable. Then we discuss the continuous variational problem and discrete variational problem, which based on interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin approximation. Next, we construct the corresponding posteriori error indicator, and prove the contraction of the summation of the energy error and the scaled error indicator. At last, we confirm and illustrate the theoretic…
We use the augmented Lagrangian formalism to derive discontinuous Galerkin formulations for problems in nonlinear elasticity. In elasticity stress is typically a symmetric function of strain, leading to symmetric tangent stiffness matrices in Newtons method when conforming finite elements are used for discretization. By use of the augmented Lagrangian framework, we can also obtain symmetric tangent stiffness matrices in discontinuous Galerkin methods. We suggest two different approaches and give examples from plasticity and from large deformation hyperelasticity.
This paper proposes and analyzes a fully discrete scheme that discretizes space with an ultra-weak local discontinuous Galerkin scheme and time with the Crank--Nicolson method for the nonlinear biharmonic Schrödinger equation. We first rewrite the problem into a system with a second-order spatial derivative and then apply the ultra-weak discontinuous Galerkin method to the system. The proposed scheme is more computationally efficient compared with the local discontinuous Galerkin method because of fewer auxiliary variables, and unconditionally stable without any penalty terms; it also preserve…
In this paper, we design the first residual type a posteriori error estimator for mixed interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for the H(curl)-elliptic problems. Then we prove that our residual based a posteriori error indicator is both reliable and efficient. At last, we present some numerical experiments to validate the performance of the indicator within an adaptive mesh refinement procedure.
We combine the newly-constructed Galerkin difference basis with the energy-based discontinuous Galerkin method for wave equations in second order form. The approximation properties of the resulting method are excellent and the allowable time steps are large compared to traditional discontinuous Galerkin methods. The one drawback of the combined approach is the cost of inversion of the local mass matrix. We demonstrate that for constant coefficient problems on Cartesian meshes this bottleneck can be removed by the use of a modified Galerkin difference basis. For variable coefficients or non-Car…
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations require the positivity of thermodynamic quantities in order to guarantee their well-posedness. In this work, we introduce a positivity limiting strategy for entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin discretizations constructed by blending high order solutions with a low order positivity-preserving discretization. The proposed low order discretization is semi-discretely entropy stable, and the proposed limiting strategy is positivity preserving for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes…
