We construct a new Euler system for the Galois representation $V_{f,χ}$ attached to a newform $f$ of weight $2r\geq 2$ twisted by an anticyclotomic Hecke character $χ$. The Euler system is anticyclotomic in the sense of Jetchev-Nekovar-Skinner. We then show some arithmetic applications of the constructed Euler system, including new results on the Bloch-Kato conjecture in ranks zero and one, and a divisibility towards the Iwasawa-Greenberg main conjecture for $V_{f,χ}$.
In particular, in the case where the base-change of $f$ to our imaginary quadratic field has root number $+1$ and $χ$ has higher weight (which implies that the complex $L$-function $L(V_{f,χ},s)$ vanishes at the center), our results show that the Bloch-Kato Selmer group of $V_{f,χ}$ is nonzero, as predicted by the Bloch-Kato conjecture; and if in addition a certain distinguished class $κ_{\,f,χ}$ is nonzero, then the Selmer group is one-dimensional. Such applications to the Bloch-Kato conjecture for $V_{f,χ}$ were left wide open by the earlier approaches using Heegner cycles and/or Beilinson-Flach elements. Our construction is based instead on a generalization of the Gross-Kudla-Schoen diagonal cycles.
Building on the construction of big Heegner points in the quaternionic setting, and their relation to special values of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions, we obtain anticyclotomic analogues of the results of Emerton-Pollack-Weston on the variation of Iwasawa invariants in Hida families. In particular, combined with the known cases of the anticyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture in weight $2$, our results yield a proof of the main conjecture for $p$-ordinary newforms of higher weights and trivial nebentypus.
Following Bertolini and Darmon's method, with "Ihara's lemma" among other conditions Longo and Wang proved one divisibility of Iwasawa main conjecture for Hilbert modular forms of weight $2$ and general low parallel weight respectively. In this paper, we remove the "Ihara's lemma" condition in their results.
In this article, we study the Iwasawa theory for Hilbert modular forms over the anticyclotomic extension of a CM field. We prove a one sided divisibility result toward the Iwasawa main conjecture. The proof relies on the first and second reciprocity law relating theta elements to Heegner points Euler system. As a by-product we also prove certain Bloch-Kato type result in the rank $0$ case and a parity conjecture
This is the first in a series of articles where we will study the Iwasawa theory of an elliptic modular form f along the anticyclotomic Zp-tower of an imaginary quadratic field K where the prime p splits completely. Our goal in this portion is to prove the Iwasawa main conjecture for suitable twists of f assuming that f is p-ordinary, both in the definite and indefinite setups simultaneously, via an analysis of Beilinson-Flach elements.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve, and $p$ a prime where $E$ has good reduction, and assume that $E$ admits a rational $p$-isogeny. In this paper, we study the anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of $E$ over an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ splits, which we relate to the anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory of characters following the method of Greenberg--Vatsal. As a result of our study, we obtain a proof, under mild hypotheses, of Perrin-Riou's Heegner point main conjecture, as well as a $p$-converse to the theorem of Gross--Zagier and Kolyvagin and the $p$-part of the Birch--Swinnerton-Dy…
We study the Iwasawa theory of a CM elliptic curve $E$ in the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension $D_\infty$ of the CM field $K$, where $p$ is a prime of good, supersingular reduction for $E$. Our main result yields an asymptotic formula for the corank of the $p$-primary Selmer group of $E$ along the extension $D_\infty/K$.
We study the Iwasawa theory of a CM elliptic curve $E$ in the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension of the CM field, where $p$ is a prime of good, ordinary reduction for $E$. When the complex $L$-function of $E$ vanishes to even order, the two variable main conjecture of Rubin implies that the Pontryagin dual of the $p$-power Selmer group over the anticyclotomic extension is a torsion Iwasawa module. When the order of vanishing is odd, work of Greenberg shows that it is not a torsion module. In this paper we show that in the case of odd order of vanishing the dual of the Selmer group has ran…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over ${\bf Q}$ and $K$ an imaginary quadratic field satisfying the Heegner hypothesis. A classical result of Kolyvagin states that, under suitable assumptions, if the basic Heegner point $y_K \in E(K)$ is not divisible by an odd prime $p$, then the groups $E(K)/{\bf Z} y_K$ and $\sha(E/K)$ are finite and their orders are prime to $p$. In this article we develop the following themes: firstly, we discuss improvements of Kolyvagin's result, following Cha (2005) and Lawson and Wuthrich (2016). Secondly, we prove an abstract Iwasawa-theoretical result which allo…
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field. Under a certain Heegner hypothesis, Kolyvagin constructed cohomology classes for $E$ using $K$-CM points and conjectured they did not all vanish. Conditional on this conjecture, he described the Selmer rank of $E$ using his system of classes. We extend work of Wei Zhang to prove new cases of Kolyvagin's conjecture by considering congruences of modular forms modulo large powers of $p $. Additionally, we prove an analogous result, and give a description of the Selmer rank, in a complementary "definite" case (usi…
In this paper we prove an anticyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture proposed by Perrin-Riou for Heegner points when the global sign is -1, using a recent work of the author on one divisibility of Iwasawa-Greenberg main conjecture for Rankin-Selberg p-adic L-functions. As a byproduct we also prove the equality for the above mentioned main conjecture under some local conditions.
We study the Selmer group associated to a $p$-ordinary newform $f \in S_{2r}(Γ_0(N))$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of an imaginary quadratic field $K/\mathbb{Q}$. Under certain assumptions, we prove that this Selmer group has no proper $Λ$-submodules of finite index. This generalizes work of Bertolini in the elliptic curve case. We also offer both a correction and an improvement to an earlier result on Iwasawa invariants of congruent modular forms by the present authors.
We study the variation of Iwasawa invariants of the anticyclotomic Selmer groups of congruent modular forms under the Heegner hypothesis. In particular, we show that even if the Selmer groups we study may have positive coranks, the mu-invariant vanishes for one modular form if and only if it vanishes for the other, and that their lambda-invariants are related by an explicit formula. This generalizes results of Greenberg-Vatsal for the cyclotomic extension, as well as results of Pollack-Weston and Castella-Kim-Longo for the anticyclotomic extension when the Selmer groups in question are cotorsi…
We give two algorithms to compute layers of the anticyclotomic ${\bf Z}_3$-extension of an imaginary quadratic field. The first is based on complex multiplication techniques for nonmaximal orders; the second is based on Kummer theory. As an illustration of our results, we use the mirroring principle to derive results on the structure of class groups of nonmaximal orders.
In this paper we propose and prove an anticyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture for Heegner points on supersingular elliptic curves with $a_p=0$. The result has a "$\pm$" nature in the sense of Kobayashi. The proof uses a recent work of the second author on one divisibility in the Iwasawa--Greenberg main conjecture for Rankin-Selberg $p$-adic $L$-functions, together with an argument of Howard (adapted to our "$\pm$"-situation). As a byproduct, we also obtain an improvement of Skinner's result on a converse to the Gross--Zagier--Kolyvagin theorem.
In this paper, we prove under mild hypotheses the Iwasawa main conjectures of Lei--Loeffler--Zerbes for modular forms of weight $2$ at non-ordinary primes. Our proof is based on the study of the two-variable analogues of these conjectures formulated by Büyükboduk--Lei for imaginary quadratic fields in which $p$ splits, and on anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory. As application of our results, we deduce the $p$-part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer formula in analytic ranks $0$ or $1$ for abelian varieties over $\mathbb{Q}$ of ${\rm GL}_2$-type for non-ordinary primes $p>2$.
We formulate analogues of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for the $p$-adic $L$-functions of Bertolini-Darmon-Prasanna attached to elliptic curves $E/\mathbf{Q}$ at primes $p$ of good ordinary reduction. Using Iwasawa theory, we then prove under mild hypotheses one of the inequalities predicted by the rank part of our conjectures, as well as the predicted leading coefficient formula up to a $p$-adic unit. Our conjectures are very closely related to conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type formulated by Bertolini-Darmon in 1996 for certain Heegner distributions, and as application …
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $K$ an imaginary quadratic field where $p$ splits. Under appropriate hypotheses, Bertolini showed that the Selmer group of a $p$-ordinary elliptic curve over the anticyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extension of $K$ does not admit any proper $Λ$-submodule of finite index, where $Λ$ is a suitable Iwasawa algebra. We generalize this result to the plus and minus Selmer groups (in the sense of Kobayashi) of $p$-supersingular elliptic curves. In particular, in our setting the plus/minus Selmer groups have $Λ$-corank one, so they are not $Λ$-cotorsion. As an application of our ma…
We construct a bipartite Euler system in the sense of Howard for Hilbert modular eigenforms of parallel weight two over totally real fields, generalizing works of Bertolini-Darmon, Longo, Nekovar, Pollack-Weston and others. The construction has direct applications to Iwasawa main conjectures. For instance, it implies in many cases one divisibility of the associated dihedral or anticyclotomic main conjecture, at the same time reducing the other divisibility to a certain nonvanishing criterion for the associated p-adic L-functions. It also has applications to cyclotomic main conjectures for Hilb…
In this article, we prove an explicit Waldspurger formula for the toric Hilbert modular forms. As an application, we construct a class of anticyclotomic p-adic Rankin-Selberg L-functions for Hilbert modular forms, generalizing the construction of Bertolini, Darmon and Prasanna in the elliptic case. Moreover, building on works of Hida, we give a necessary and sufficient condition when the Iwasawa mu-invariant of this p-adic L-function vanishes and prove a result on the non-vanishing modulo $p$ of central Rankin-Selberg L-values with anticyclotomic twists.
Iwasawa theory of modular forms over anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of imaginary quadratic fields has been studied by several authors, starting from the works of Bertolini-Darmon and Iovita-Spiess, under the crucial assumption that the prime $p$ is unramified in $K$. We start in this article the systematic study of anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-functions when $p$ is ramified in $K$. In particular, when $f$ is a weight $2$ modular form attached to an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ having multiplicative reduction at $p$, and $p$ is ramified in $K$, we show an analogue of the exceptional z…
Iwasawa theory of Heegner points on abelian varieties of GL_2 type has been studied by, among others, Mazur, Perrin-Riou, Bertolini and Howard. The purpose of this paper, the first in a series of two, is to describe extensions of some of their results in which abelian varieties are replaced by the Galois cohomology of Deligne's p-adic representation attached to a modular form f of even weight >2. In this more general setting, the role of Heegner points is played by higher-dimensional Heegner cycles in the sense of Nekovář. In particular, we prove that the Pontryagin dual of a certain Bloch-Kat…
We formulate integral Iwasawa main conjectures for suitable twists of a newform $f$ that is non-ordinary at $p$, over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions (in both the definite and the indefinite cases) as well as the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ where $p$ splits. In order to do so, we define Kobayashi-Sprung-style signed Coleman maps, which we use to introduce doubly-signed Selmer groups. In the same spirit, we construct signed (integral) Beilinson-Flach elements (out of the collection of unbounded Beilinson-Fl…
We establish several results towards the two-variable main conjecture of Iwasawa theory for elliptic curves without complex multiplication over imaginary quadratic fields, namely (i) the existence of an appropriate p-adic L-function, building on works of Hida and Perrin-Riou, (ii) the basic structure theory of the dual Selmer group, following works of Coates, Hachimori-Venjakob, et al., and (iii) the implications of dihedral or anticyclotomic main conjectures with basechange. The result of (i) is deduced from the construction of Hida and Perrin-Riou, which in particular is seen to give a bound…
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve with ordinary reduction at a prime $p$, and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field. The anticyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture, depending upon the sign of the functional equation of $L(E/K,s)$, predicts the behavior of Selmer group of $E/\mathbb{Q}$ along the anticyclotomic tower of $K$. Some of the crucial ideas of Bertolini and Darmon on this conjecture have been abstracted by Howard into an axiomatic set-up through a notion of Bipartite Euler systems, assuming that $E[p]$ is an irreducible representation of $G_{K}$. We generalize this work by assumin…
This note shows how to use the framework of Euler characteristic formulae to study Selmer groups of abelian varieties in certain dihedral or anticyclotomic extensions of CM fields via Iwasawa main conjectures, and in particular how to verify the p-part of the refined Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture in this setting. When the Selmer group is cotorsion with respect to the associated Iwasawa algebra, we obtain the p-part of formula predicted by the refined Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. When the Selmer group is not cotorsion with respect to the associated Iwasawa algebra, we give a con…
Let $E/\mathbf{Q}$ be an elliptic curve of conductor $N$, let $p>3$ be a prime where $E$ has good ordinary reduction, and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field satisfying the Heegner hypothesis. In 1987, Perrin-Riou formulated an Iwasawa main conjecture for the Tate-Shafarevich group of $E$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ in terms of Heegner points. In this paper, we give a proof of Perrin-Riou's conjecture under mild hypotheses. Our proof builds on Howard's theory of bipartite Euler systems and Wei Zhang's work on Kolyvagin's conjecture. In the case when $p$ splits i…
Perrin-Riou has formulated a form of the Iwasawa main conjecture, which relates Heegner points to the Selmer group of an elliptic curve as one goes up the anticyclotomic Z_p extension of a quadratic imaginary field K. Building on the earlier work of Bertolini on this conjecture, and making use of the recent work of Mazur and Rubin on Kolyvagin's theory of Euler systems, we prove one divisibility of Perrin-Riou's conjectured equality. As a consequence, one obtains an upper bound on the rank of the Mordell-Weil group E(K) in terms of Heegner points.
We construct the three-variable p-adic triple product L-functions attached to Hida families of ellptic newforms and prove the explicit interpolation formulae at all critical specializations by establishing explicit Ichino's formulae for the trilinear period integrals of automorphic forms. Our formulae perfectly fit the conjectural shape of p-adic L-functions predicted by Coates and Perrin-Riou. As an application, we prove the factorization of certain unbalanced p-adic triple product L-functions into a product of anticyclotomic p-adic L-functions for modular forms. By this factorization, we giv…
If E is an elliptic curve over Q and K is an imaginary quadratic field, there is an Iwasawa main conjecture predicting the behavior of the Selmer group of E over the anticyclotomic Z_p-extension of K. The main conjecture takes different forms depending on the sign of the functional equation of L(E/K,s). In the present work we combine ideas of Bertolini and Darmon with those of Mazur and Rubin to shown that the main conjecture, regardless of the sign of the functional equation, can be reduced to proving the nonvanishing of sufficiently many p-adic L-functions attached to a family of congruent m…
