Orbital current has emerged over the past years as one of the key novel concepts in magnetotransport. Here, we demonstrate that laser pulses can be used to generate large and robust non-relativistic orbital currents in systems where the inversion symmetry is broken by the orbital Rashba effect. By referring to model and first principles tools, we demonstrate that orbital Rashba effect, accompanied by crystal field splitting, can mediate robust orbital photocurrents without a need for spin-orbit interaction even in metallic systems. We show that such non-relativistic orbital photocurrents are translated into derivative photocurrents of spin when relativistic effects are taken into account. We thus promote orbital photocurrents as a promising platform for optical generation of currents of angular momentum, and discuss their possible applications.
Here, we report first principles calculations and analysis of laser-induced photocurrents at the surface of a prototype Rashba system. By referring to Keldysh non-equilibrium formalism combined with the Wannier interpolation scheme we perform first-principles electronic structure calculations of a prototype BiAg$_2$ surface alloy, which is a well-known material realization of the Rashba model. In addition to non-magnetic ground state situation we also study the case of in-plane magnetized BiAg$_2$. We calculate the laser-induced charge photocurrents for the ferromagnetic case and the laser-ind…
In metallic noncentrosymmetric crystals and at surfaces the response of spin currents and charge currents to applied electric fields contains contributions that are second order in the electric field, which are forbidden by symmetry in centrosymmetric systems. Thereby, photocurrents and spin photocurrents can be generated in inversion asymmetric metals by the application of femtosecond laser pulses. We study the laser-induced charge current in the ferromagnetic Rashba model with in-plane magnetization and find that this \textit{magnetic photogalvanic effect} can be tuned to be comparable in si…
The spin-galvanic effect and the circular photogalvanic effect induced by terahertz radiation are applied to determine the relative strengths of Rashba and Dresselhaus band spin-splitting in (001)-grown GaAs and InAs based two dimensional electron systems. We observed that shifting the $δ$-doping plane from one side of the quantum well to the other results in a change of sign of the photocurrent caused by Rashba spin-splitting while the sign of the Dresselhaus term induced photocurrent remains. The measurements give the necessary feedback for technologists looking for structures with equal Ras…
Generating and controlling spin current (SC) are of central interest in spin physics and applications. To date, the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) is an established pathway to generate SC through the spin-charge current conversion. We predict an efficient spin-light conversion via the Rashba and higher-order cubic Dresselhaus SOIs in ferroelectrics. Different from the known Edelstein effect, where SC is created by the nonequilibrium spin density, our predicted spin-polarized current is from direct interactions between light and unique spin textures generated by SOI in ferroelectrics. Using first…
Converse effect of spin photocurrent and current induced spin polarization are experimentally demonstrated in the same two-dimensional electron gas system with Rashba spin splitting. Their consistency with the strength of the Rashba coupling as measured from beating of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations reveals a unified picture for the spin photocurrent, current-induced spin polarization and spin orbit coupling. In addition, the observed spectral inversion of the spin photocurrent indicates the system with dominating structure inversion asymmetry.
We consider the effect of the Rashba spin-orbital interaction and space charge in a ferromagnet-insulator/semiconductor/insulator-ferromagnet junction where the spin current is severely affected by the doping, band structure and charge screening in the semiconductor. In diffusion region, if the the resistance of the tunneling barriers is comparable to the semiconductor resistance, the magnetoresistance of this junction can be greatly enhanced under appropriate doping by the co-ordination between the Rashba effect and screened Coulomb interaction in the nonequilibrium transport processes within…
We investigate the Rashba-type spin splitting in the Shockley surface states on Au(111) and Ag(111) surfaces, based on first-principles calculations. By turning on and off spin-orbit interaction (SOI) partly, we show that although the surface states are mainly of p-orbital character with only small d-orbital one, d-channel SOI determines the splitting and the spin direction while p-channel SOI has minor and negative effects. The small d-orbital character of the surface states, present even without SOI, varies linearly with the crystal momentum k, resulting in the linear k dependence of the spl…
The Rashba effect is one of the most striking manifestations of spin-orbit coupling in solids, and provides a cornerstone for the burgeoning field of semiconductor spintronics. It is typically assumed to manifest as a momentum-dependent splitting of a single initially spin-degenerate band into two branches with opposite spin polarisation. Here, combining polarisation-dependent and resonant angle-resolved photoemission measurements with density-functional theory calculations, we show that the two "spin-split" branches of the model giant Rashba system BiTeI additionally develop disparate orbital…
We propose a mechanism for spin polarized photocurrent generation in quantum wires. The effect is due to the combined effect of Rashba spin-orbit interaction, external magnetic field and microwave radiation. The time-independent interactions in the wire give rise to a spectrum asymmetry in k-space. The microwave radiation induces transitions between spin-splitted subbands, and, due to the peculiar energy dispersion relation, charge and spin currents are generated at zero bias voltage. We demonstrate that the generation of pure spin currents is possible under an appropriate choice of external c…

It is shown that the free-carrier (Drude) absorption of circularly polarized radiation in quantum well structures leads to an electric current flow. The photocurrent reverses its direction upon switching the light helicity. A pure orbital mechanism of such a circular photogalvanic effect is proposed that is based on interference of different pathways contributing to the light absorption. Calculation shows that the magnitude of the helicity dependent photocurrent in $n$-doped quantum well structures corresponds to recent experimental observations.
When the inversion symmetry is broken at a surface, spin-orbit interaction gives rise to spin-dependent energy shifts - a phenomenon which is known as the spin Rashba effect. Recently, it has been recognized that an orbital counterpart of the spin Rashba effect - the orbital Rashba effect - can be realized at surfaces even without spin- orbit coupling. Here, we propose a mechanism for the orbital Rashba effect based on sp orbital hybridization, which ultimately leads to the electric polarization of surface states. As a proof of principle, we show from first principles that this effect leads to…
We derive an effective continuum model for describing the propagation of electrons in ballistic one-dimensional curved nanostructure which are marked by a strong interplay of spin-orbital degrees of freedom due to local electronic states with $d-$orbital symmetry, atomic spin-orbit and orbital Rashba couplings. We demonstrate how a planar inhomogeneous spatial curvature of the nanochannel can generate both spin and orbital textures represented through loops on the corresponding Bloch spheres. In particular, we employ the paradigmatic case of an elliptically shaped quantum ring to investigate t…
We have studied the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) in Cu/Bi bilayers. When a circularly polarized light in the visible range is irradiated to the bilayer from an oblique incidence, we find a photocurrent that depends on the helicity of light. Such photocurrent appears in a direction perpendicular to the light plane of incidence but is absent in the parallel configuration. The helicity dependent photocurrent is significantly reduced for a Bi single layer film and the effect is nearly absent for a Cu single layer film. Conventional interpretation of the CPGE suggests the existence of spin-…
Rashba interfaces have emerged as promising platforms for spin-charge interconversion through the direct and inverse Edelstein effects. Notably, oxide-based two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) display a large and gate-tunable conversion efficiency, as determined by transport measurements. However, a direct visualization of the Rashba-split bands in oxide 2DEGs is lacking, which hampers an advanced understanding of their rich spin-orbit physics. Here, we investigate KTaO$_3$-2DEGs and evidence their Rashba-split bands using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Fitting the bands with a …
Domain wall in bilayer graphene with Rashba spin-orbital coupling and staggered sublattice potentials, at the interface between two domains with different gated voltages, is studied. Varying type of zero-line modes are identified, including zero-line mode with pure spin filtering effect. The Y-shape current partition at the junction among three different domains are proposed.
A linearly polarized light normally incident on a semiconductor quantum well with spin-orbit coupling may generate pure spin current via direct interband optical transition. An electric photocurrent can be extracted from the pure spin current when an in-plane magnetic field is applied, which has been recently observed in the InGaAs/InAlAs quantum well [Dai et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 246601 (2010)]. Here we present a theoretical study of this magnetoelectric photocurrent effect associated with the interband transition. By employing the density matrix formalism, we show that the photoexcited …
We study ultrafast photocurrents in thin films of a model ferromagnetic metal with broken bulk inversion symmetry, the half-metallic Heusler compound NiMnSb, following excitation with an optical pump pulse with photon energy 1.55 eV. Remarkably, in terms of the direction of the sample magnetization M, all photocurrents are found to be a superposition of a component with Rashba- and Dresselhaus-type symmetry. We explain the Dresselhaus bulk photocurrent as follows: Pump-induced electron heating induces an excess of spin μ_s||M, which transfers spin angular momentum into states with Dresselhaus-…
Theory of Rashba spin-orbit coupling in magnetic metals is worked out from microscopic Hamiltonian describing d-orbitals. When structural inversion symmetry is broken, electron hopping between $d$-orbitals generates chiral ordering of orbital angular momentum, which combines with atomic spin-orbit coupling to result in the Rashba interaction. Rashba parameter characterizing the interaction is band-specific, even reversing its sign from band to band. Large enhancement of the Rashba parameter found in recent experiments is attributed to the orbital mixing of 3d magnetic atoms with non-magnetic h…
Associated with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and inversion symmetry breaking, Rashba spin polarization opens a new avenue for spintronic applications that was previously limited to ordinary magnets. However, spin polarization effects in actual Rashba systems are far more complicated than what conventional single-orbital models would suggest. By studying via first-principles DFT and a multi-orbital k.p model a 3D bulk Rashba system (free of complications by surface effects) we find that the physical origin of the leading spin polarization effects is SOC-induced hybridization between spin and multi…
We calculate orbital spin-dependent magnetization in a two-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit interaction of Rashba type. Such an orbital magnetization is admitted by the time-reversal symmetry of the system, and gives rise to spin currents when the system is not in thermal equilibrium. The theoretical approach is based on the linear response theory and the Matsubara Green's function formalism. To account for the spin-resolved orbital magnetization a spin-dependent vector potential has been introduced. The spin currents which appear in thermal nonequilibrium due to the spin-resolved orbi…
We investigate the induced orbital magnetization density in a Rashba electron gas with magnetic impurities. Relying on classical electrodynamics, we obtain this quantity through the bound currents composed of a paramagnetic and a diamagnetic-like contribution which emerge from the spin-orbit interaction. Similar to Friedel charge ripples, the bound currents and the orbital magnetization density oscillate as function of distance away from the impurity with characteristic wavelengths defined by the Fermi energy and the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The net induced orbital magnet…
We study the spin photogalvanic effect in two-dimensional electron system with structure inversion asymmetry by means of the solution of semiconductor optical Bloch equations. It is shown that a linearly polarized light may inject a pure spin current in spin-splitting conduction bands due to Rashba spin-orbit coupling, while a circularly polarized light may inject spin-dependent photocurrent. We establish an explicit relation between the photocurrent by oblique incidence of a circularly polarized light and the pure spin current by normal incidence of a linearly polarized light such that we can…
We report on a general theory for analyzing quantum transport through devices in the Metal-QD-Metal configuration where QD is a quantum dot or the device scattering region which contains Rashba spin-orbital and electron-electron interactions. The metal leads may or may not be ferromagnetic, they are assumed to weakly couple to the QD region. Our theory is formulated by second quantizing the Rashba spin-orbital interaction in spectral space (instead of real space), and quantum transport is then analyzed within the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. The Rashba interaction causes …
We consider the current induced in a quantum wire by external electromagnetic radiation. The photocurrent is caused by the interplay of spin-orbit interaction (Rashba and Dresselhaus terms) and external in-plane magnetic field. We calculate this current using a Wigner functions approach taking into account radiation-induced transitions between transverse subbands. The magnitude and the direction of the current depend on the Dresselhaus and Rashba constants, strength of magnetic field, radiation frequency and intensity. The current can be controlled by changing some of these parameters.
Recent experimental observation of unexpectedly large current-induced spin-orbit torque in surface oxidized Cu on top of a ferromagnet suggested a possible role of the orbital Rashba effect (ORE). With this motivation, we investigate the ORE from first principles by considering an oxygen monolayer on top of a Cu(111) film. We show that surface oxidization of Cu film leads to gigantic enhancement of the ORE for states near the Fermi surface. The resulting chiral orbital texture in the momentum space is exceptionally strong, reaching $\sim 0.5\hbar$ in magnitude. We find that resonant hybridizat…
We report on the circular and linear photogalvanic effects caused by free-carrier absorption of terahertz radiation in electron channels on (001)-oriented and miscut silicon surfaces. The photocurrent behavior upon variation of the radiation polarization state, wavelength, gate voltage and temperature is studied. We present the microscopical and phenomenological theory of the photogalvanic effects, which describes well the experimental results. In particular, it is demonstrated that the circular (photon-helicity sensitive) photocurrent in silicon-based structures is of pure orbital nature orig…
We propose the lead sulphide (PbS) monolayer as a 2D semiconductor with a large Rashba-like spin-orbit effect controlled by the out-of-plane buckling. The buckled PbS conduction band is found to possess Rashba-like dispersion and spin texture at the $M$ and $Γ$ points, with large effective Rashba parameters of $λ\sim5~$eV$Å~$ and $λ\sim1~$eV$~Å$, respectively. Using a tight-binding formalism, we show that the Rashba effect originates from the very large spin-orbit interaction and the hopping term that mixes the in-plane and out-of-plane $p$ orbitals of Pb and S atoms. The latter, which depends…

We study the effects of a Zeeman magnetic field on the electron transport of one-dimensional quantum rings which are marked by electronic states with $d-$orbital symmetry in the presence of spin-orbit and orbital Rashba couplings. By considering phase-coherent propagation, we analyse the geometric Aharonov-Anandan (AA) phase of the channels which is acquired in a closed path, by demonstrating that the orbital polarization can influence the electronic transport when amplitude and magnetic field directions are varied. We explore all the possible cases for the injection of electrons at various en…
The time reversal Aharonov-Casher (AC) interference effect in the mesoscopic ring structures, based on the experiment in Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{97}, 196803 (2006), is studied theoretically. The transmission curves are calculated from the scattering matrix formalism, and the time reversal AC interference frequency is singled out from the Fourier spectra in numerical simulations. This frequency is in good agreement with analytical result. It is also shown that in the absent of magnetic field, the Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak type (time reversal) AC interference retains under the influence of strong…
We report on the observation of linear and circular magnetogyrotropic photogalvanic effects in InSb/AlInSb quantum well structures. We show that intraband (Drude-like) absorption of terahertz radiation in the heterostructures causes a dc electric current in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. The photocurrent behavior upon variation of the magnetic field strength, temperature and wavelength is studied. We show that at moderate magnetic fields the photocurrent exhibits a typical linear field dependence. At high magnetic fields, however, it becomes nonlinear and inverses its sign. The ex…
The weak interlayer Van Der Waals material \{beta}-Bi2Pd has recently been established as a strong topological superconductor candidate with unconventional spin-triplet pairing and Majorana zero modes at vortices. In this letter, we study the topological characters and the superconducting pairing, which are still obscure in monolayer \{beta}-Bi2Pd, in light of our effective theoretical model. We find that the non-Rashba spin-orbital coupling plays a critical role in realizing and tuning various novel topological natures. In particular, the spin-triplet p-wave superconducting pairing with Major…
We study theoretically the spin and orbital angular momentum (OAM) Hall effect in a high mobility two-dimensional electron system with Rashba and Dresselhuas spin-orbit coupling by introducing both the spin and OAM torque corrections, respectively, to the spin and OAM currents. We find that when both bands are occupied, the spin Hall conductivity is still a constant (i.e., independent of the carrier density) which, however, has an opposite sign to the previous value. The spin Hall conductivity in general would not be cancelled by the OAM Hall conductivity. The OAM Hall conductivity is also ind…
We formulate the effective Hamiltonian of Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) in $\mathrm{LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3}$ (LAO/STO) heterostructures. We derive analytical expressions of properties, e.g., Rashba parameter, effective mass, band edge energy and orbital occupancy, as functions of material and tunable heterostructure parameters. While linear RSOC is dominant around the $Γ$-point, cubic RSOC becomes significant at the higher-energy anti-crossing region. We find that linear RSOC stems from the structural inversion asymmetry (SIA), while the cubic term is induced by both SIA and bulk asymmetry. Furth…
We numerically investigate the transport behavior of a quasi one-dimension (1D) square loop device containing the Rashba spin-orbital interaction in the presence of a magnetic flux. The conductance versus the magnetic field shows the Al'tshuler-Aronov-Spivak (AAS) and Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations. We focus on the oscillatory amplitudes, and find that both of them are strongly dependent on the spin precession angle (i.e. the strength of the spin-orbit interaction) and exhibit no-periodic oscillations, which are well in agreement with a recent experiment by Koga et al. [cond-mat/0504743(unpub…
Exciting phenomena may emerge in non-centrosymmetric two-dimensional (2D) electronic systems when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) interplays dynamically with Coulomb interactions, band topology, and external modulating forces, etc. Here, we report illuminating synergetic effects between SOC and Stark in centrosymmetric few-layer black arsenic (BAs), manifested as giant Rashba valley splitting and exotic quantum Hall states (QHS) reversibly controlled by electrostatic gating. The unusual finding is rooted in the puckering square lattice of BAs, in which heavy $4p$ orbitals form highly asymmetric $Γ$ …
A theory of the circular photogalvanic effect caused by spin splitting in quantum wells is developed. Direct interband transitions between the hole and electron size-quantized subbands are considered. The photocurrent excitation spectrum is shown to depend strongly on the form of the spin-orbit interaction. In the case of structure inversion asymmetry induced (Rashba) spin-splitting, the current is a linear function of light frequency near the absorption edge, and for the higher excitation energy the spectrum changes its sign and has a minimum. In contrast, when the bulk inversion asymmetry (D…
In a recent Rapid Communication (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 63}, 121210(R) (2001)), Haüsler showed that the interaction between electrons in quantum wires may enhance the persistent spin current arising from Rashba spin-orbital coupling. In this Comments, we would like to point out that this 'enhancement' comes from a misunderstanding to the boosting persistent current in the Luttinger liquid theory. A correct calculation will not give such an enhancement of the persistent spin current. Meanwhile, we provide a Luttinger liquid theory with Rashba spin-orbital interaction by bosonization, which may show …
The effect of Rashba spin-orbital interaction upon supercurrent in S-2DEG-S proximity junctions is investigated in the clean limit. Generalization of Beenakker's formula for Andreev levels to the case of spin-orbital scattering is presented. Spin-orbit - induced splitting of Andreev bound-states is predicted for a junction of infinite width, and with non-vanishing normal backscattering at S/N interfaces. Semiclassical average of the Josephson current is however insensitive to the Rashba coupling as long as electron-electron interaction in 2DEG is neglected.
