We report on the circular and linear photogalvanic effects caused by free-carrier absorption of terahertz radiation in electron channels on (001)-oriented and miscut silicon surfaces. The photocurrent behavior upon variation of the radiation polarization state, wavelength, gate voltage and temperature is studied. We present the microscopical and phenomenological theory of the photogalvanic effects, which describes well the experimental results. In particular, it is demonstrated that the circular (photon-helicity sensitive) photocurrent in silicon-based structures is of pure orbital nature originating from the quantum interference of different pathways contributing to the absorption of monochromatic radiation.
We report on the study of the linear and circular magneto-gyrotropic photogalvanic effect (MPGE) in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well structures. Using the fact that in such structures the Landé-factor g* depends on the quantum well (QW) width and has different signs for narrow and wide QWs, we succeeded to separate spin and orbital contributions to both MPGEs. Our experiments show that, for most quantum well widths, the PGEs are mainly driven by spin-related mechanisms, which results in a photocurrent proportional to the g* factor. In structures with a vanishingly small g* factor, however, linear and …
We report on the observation of linear and circular magnetogyrotropic photogalvanic effects in InSb/AlInSb quantum well structures. We show that intraband (Drude-like) absorption of terahertz radiation in the heterostructures causes a dc electric current in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. The photocurrent behavior upon variation of the magnetic field strength, temperature and wavelength is studied. We show that at moderate magnetic fields the photocurrent exhibits a typical linear field dependence. At high magnetic fields, however, it becomes nonlinear and inverses its sign. The ex…
The photogalvanic effect -- a rectified current induced by light irradiation -- requires the intrinsic symmetry of the medium to be sufficiently low, which strongly limits candidate materials for this effect. In this work we explore how in Weyl semimetals the photogalvanic effect can be enabled and controlled by design of the material surface. Specifically, we provide a theory of ballistic linear and circular photogalvanic current in a Weyl semimetal spatially confined to a slab under general and variable surface boundary conditions. The results are applicable to Weyl semimetals with an arbitr…
The electrostatic confinement of massless charge carriers is hampered by Klein tunneling. Circumventing this problem in graphene mainly relies on carving out nanostructures or applying electric displacement fields to open a band gap in bilayer graphene. So far, these approaches suffer from edge disorder or insufficiently controlled localization of electrons. Here we realize an alternative strategy in monolayer graphene, by combining a homogeneous magnetic field and electrostatic confinement. Using the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope, we induce a confining potential in the Landau gaps of…
We investigate electric and magnetic properties of graphene with rotationally symmetric strain. The strain generates large pseudo magnetic field with alternating sign in space, which forms a strongly confined quantum dot connected to six chiral channels. The orbital magnetism, degeneracy, and channel opening can be understood from the interplay between real and pseudo magnetic field which have different parities under time reversal and mirror reflection. While the orbital magnetic response of the confined state is diamagnetic, it can be paramagnetic if there is an accidental degeneracy with op…
We use co-tunneling spectroscopy to investigate spin-, orbital-, and spin-orbital Kondo transport in a strongly confined system of InAs double quantum dots (QDs) parallel-coupled to source and drain. In the one-electron transport regime, the higher symmetry spin-orbital Kondo effect manifests at orbital degeneracy and no external magnetic field. We then proceed to show that the individual Kondo contributions can be isolated and studied separately; either by orbital detuning in the case of spin-Kondo transport, or by spin splitting in the case of orbital Kondo transport. By varying the inter-do…

We study spin control for an electron confined in a flake of silicene. We find that the lowest-energy conduction-band levels are split by the diagonal intrinsic spin-orbit coupling into Kramers doublets with a definite projection of the spin on the orbital magnetic moment. We study the spin control by AC electric fields using the non-diagonal Rashba component of the spin-orbit interactions with the time-dependent atomistic tight-binding approach. The Rashba interactions in AC electric fields produce Rabi spin-flips times of the order of a nanosecond. These times can be reduced to tens of picos…
We perform a systematic exact diagonalization study of spin-orbit coupling effects for stationary few-electron states confined in quasi two-dimensional double quantum dots. We describe the spin-orbit-interaction induced coupling between bonding and antibonding orbitals and its consequences for magneto-optical absorption spectrum. The spin-orbit coupling for odd electron numbers (one, three) %only weakly perturbs the ground-state wave functions. %Nevertheless, %the spin-orbit interaction opens avoided crossings between low energy excited levels of opposite spin orientation and opposite spatial …
An important challenge in silicon quantum electronics in the few electron regime is the potentially small energy gap between the ground and excited orbital states in 3D quantum confined nanostructures due to the multiple valley degeneracies of the conduction band present in silicon. Understanding the "valley-orbit" (VO) gap is essential for silicon qubits, as a large VO gap prevents leakage of the qubit states into a higher dimensional Hilbert space. The VO gap varies considerably depending on quantum confinement, and can be engineered by external electric fields. In this work we investigate V…
Hyperfine interaction (HF) is of key importance for the functionality of solid-state quantum information processing, as it affects qubit coherence and enables nuclear-spin quantum memories. In this work, we complete the theory of the basic hyperfine interaction mechanisms (Fermi contact, dipolar, orbital) in carbon nanotube quantum dots by providing a theoretical description of the orbital HF. We find that orbital HF induces an interaction between the nuclear spins of the nanotube lattice and the valley degree of freedom of the electrons confined in the quantum dot. We show that the resulting …
In this paper we present a computational procedure that utilizes real-space grids to obtain high precision approximations of electrostatically confined few-electron states such as those that arise in gated semiconductor quantum dots. We use the Full Configuration Interaction (FCI) method with a continuously adapted orthonormal orbital basis to approximate the ground and excited states of such systems. We also introduce a benchmark problem based on a realistic analytical electrostatic potential for quantum dot devices. We show that our approach leads to highly precise computed energies and ener…
Orbital modeling of two electron spins confined in a double quantum dot is revisited. We develop an extended Hund Mulliken approach that includes excited orbitals, allowing for a triplet configuration with both electrons residing in a single dot. This model improves the reliability and applicability of the standard Hund Mulliken approximation, while remaining largely analytical, thus it enables us to identify the mechanisms behind the exchange coupling dynamics that we find. In particular, our calculations are in close agreement with exchange values that were recently measured at a high interd…

The momentum operator for a spin-less particle when confined to a 2D surface embedded into 3D space acquires a geometrical component proportional to the mean curvature that renders it Hermitian. As a consequence, the quantum force operator for a particle confined to spherical and cylindrical surfaces, and free otherwise, derived by applying the Heisenberg equation of motion is found to have an apparently no-radial component in addition to the standard classical radial centripetal force. This component which renders the force operator Hermitian is shown to be essential for the vanishing of the …
The spin states of electrons confined in semiconductor quantum dots form a promising platform for quantum computation. Recent studies of silicon CMOS qubits have shown coherent manipulation of electron spin states with extremely high fidelity. However, manipulation of single electron spins requires large oscillatory magnetic fields to be generated on-chip, making it difficult to address individual qubits when scaling up to multi-qubit devices. The spin-orbit interaction allows spin states to be controlled with electric fields, which act locally and are easier to generate. While the spin-orbit …
Self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs), which have long hole-spin coherence times and are amenable to optical control schemes, have long been explored as building blocks for qubit architectures. One such design consists of vertically stacking two QDs to create a quantum dot molecule (QDM) and using the spin-mixing properties of "molecule-like" coupled hole states for all-optical qubit manipulation. In this article, the first of two papers, we introduce the incorporation of dilute GaBiAs alloys in the barrier region between the two dots. GaBiAs is expected to increase the spin-mixing of the mol…
The Kondo effect in condensed-matter systems manifests itself most sharply in their transport measurements. Here we propose an analogous transport signature of the orbital Kondo effect realized with ultracold atoms. Our system consists of imbalanced Fermi seas of two components of fermions and an impurity atom of different species which is confined by an isotropic potential. We first apply a π/2 pulse to transform two components of fermions into two superposition states. Their interactions with the impurity atom then cause a "transport" of fermions from majority to minority superposition state…
We propose a simple but novel scheme to realize the Kondo effect with ultracold atoms. Our system consists of a Fermi sea of spinless fermions interacting with an impurity atom of different species which is confined by an isotropic potential. The interspecies attraction can be tuned with an $s$-wave Feshbach resonance so that the impurity atom and a spinless fermion form a bound dimer that occupies a threefold-degenerate $p$ orbital of the confinement potential. Many-body scatterings of this dimer and surrounding spinless fermions occur with exchanging their angular momenta and thus exhibit th…
The power of surface chemistry to create atomically precise nanoarchitectures offers intriguing opportunities to advance the field of quantum technology. Strategies for building artificial electronic lattices by individually positioning atoms or molecules result in precisely tailored structures but lack structural robustness. Here, taking the advantage of strong bonding of Br atoms on noble metal surfaces, we report the production of stable quantum corrals by dehalogenation of hexabromobenzene molecules on a preheated Au(111) surface. The byproducts, Br adatoms, are confined within a new surfa…
