We show that for any integer $n\geq2$ there is a smooth complex projective variety $X$ of dimension $5$ whose third Griffiths group $\text{Griff}^{3}(X)$ contains infinitely many torsion elements of order $n$. This generalises a recent theorem of Schreieder who proved the result for $n=2$.
We show that there are smooth complex projective varieties with infinite 2-torsion in their third Griffiths groups. It follows that the torsion subgroup of Griffiths groups is in general not finitely generated, thereby solving a problem of Schoen from 1992.
We relate the torsion part of the Abel-Jacobi kernel in the Griffiths group of 1-cycles to a birational invariant analogous to the degree 4 unramified cohomology and an invariant associated to the generalized Hodge conjecture in degree 2dim(X)-3. We also describe in terms of H-cohomology the Griffiths group of 1-cycles and the group of torsion cycles algebraically equivalent to zero of arbitrary dimension.
We prove that the degree k unramified cohomology with torsion coefficients of a smooth complex projective variety X with small CH_0(X) has a filtration of length [k/2], whose first piece is the torsion part of the quotient of the degree k+1 integral singular cohomology by its coniveau 2 subgroup, and whose next graded piece is controlled by the Griffiths group Griff^{k/2+1}(X) when k is even and is related to the higher Chow group CH^{(k+3)/2}(X, 1) when k is odd. The first piece is a generalization of the Artin-Mumford invariant (k=2) and the Colliot-Thelene-Voisin invariant (k=3). We also gi…
We prove that the Griffiths group of 3-cycles homologous to zero modulo algebraic equivalence, on a generic hypersurfaces of dimension 7 and degree 3 is not finitely generated, even when tensored with Q. Using this and a result of Nori, we give examples of varieties for which some Griffiths group is not finitely generated (modulo torsion) but whose corresponding intermediate Jacobian is trivial.
The Griffiths group $\Gr^r(X)$ of a smooth projective variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field is defined to be the group of homologically trivial algebraic cycles of codimension $r$ on $X$ modulo the subgroup of algebraically trivial algebraic cycles. The main result of this paper is that the Griffiths group $\Gr^2(A_\kbar)$ of a supersingular abelian variety $A_\kbar$ over the algebraic closure of a finite field of characteristic $p$ is at most a $p$-primary torsion group. As a corollary the same conclusion holds for supersingular Fermat threefolds. In contrast, using methods of C. Sch…
Atiyah and Hirzebruch gave examples ofeven degree torsion classes in the singularcohomology of a smooth complex projective manifold, which arenot Poincaré dual to an algebraiccycle. We notice that the order ofthese classes are small comparedto the dimension of the manifold. However, building upon a construction ofKollàr, one can provide such examples witharbitrary high prime order, the dimension being fixed. This method alsoprovides examples of torsion algebraiccycles, which are non trivial in the Griffiths' groups, and lie in a arbitrary high level of the H.Saito filtration onChow groups.
We describe the Griffiths group of the product of a curve $C$ and a surface $S$ as a quotient of the Albanese kernel of $S$ over the function field of $C$. When $C$ is a hyperplane section of $S$ varying in a Lefschetz pencil, we prove the nonvanishing in $\text{Griff}(C\times S)$ of a modification of the graph of the embedding $C\hookrightarrow S$ for infinitely many members of the pencil, provided the ground field $k$ is of characteristic $0$, the geometric genus of $S$ is $>0$, and $k$ is large or $S$ is "of motivated abelian type".
We generalize a construction of the Neron model for a family of intermediate Jacobians due to Green, Griffiths and Kerr by using the theory of mixed Hodge modules. It is a topological group defined over any partial compactification of the base space, and it `graphs' admissible normal functions. Moreover, there is a stratification of the partial compactification such that the restriction over each stratum is a complex Lie group over the stratum.
We calculate a Griffiths-type ring for smooth complete intersection in Grassmannians. This is the analogue of the classical Jacobian ring for complete intersections in projective space, and allows us to explicitly compute their Hodge groups.
We prove that any arithmetically Gorenstein curve on a smooth, general hypersurface $X\subset \bbP^{4}$ of degree at least 6, is a complete intersection. This gives a characterisation of complete intersection curves on general type hypersurfaces in $\bbP^4$. We also verify that certain 1-cycles on a general quintic hypersurface are non-trivial elements of the Griffiths group.
We use the Clemens-Griffiths method to construct smooth projective threefolds, over any field $k$ admitting a separable quadratic extension, that are $k$-unirational and $\bar{k}$-rational but not $k$-rational. When $k=\mathbb{R}$, we can moreover ensure that their real locus is diffeomorphic to the real locus of a smooth projective $\mathbb{R}$-rational variety and that all their unramified cohomology groups are trivial.
We show that the cycle map on a variety X, from algebraic cycles modulo algebraic equivalence to integer cohomology, lifts canonically to a topologically defined quotient of the complex cobordism ring of X. This more refined cycle map gives a topological proof that the Griffiths group is nonzero for some varieties X, without any use of Hodge theory. We also use this more refined cycle map to give examples of torsion algebraic cycles which map to 0 in Deligne cohomology but are not algebraically equivalent to 0, thus answering some questions by Colliot-Thelene and Schoen.
A deep result of Voisin asserts that the Griffiths group of a general non-rigid Calabi-Yau (CY) 3-fold is infinitely generated. This theorem builds on an earlier method of hers which was implemented by Albano and Collino to prove the same result for a general cubic sevenfold. In fact, Voisin's method can be utilized precisely because the variation of Hodge structure on a cubic 7-fold behaves just like the variation of Hodge structure of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We explain this relationship concretely using Kontsevitch's noncommutative geometry. Namely, we show that for a cubic 7-fold, there is a n…
First the Griffiths line bundle of a $\mathbf Q$-VHS $\mathscr V$ is generalized to a Griffiths character ${\rm grif}(\mathbf G, μ,r)$ associated to any triple $(\mathbf G, μ, r)$, where $\mathbf G$ is a connected reductive group over an arbitrary field $F$, $μ\in X_*(\mathbf G)$ is a cocharacter (over $\overline{F}$) and $r:\mathbf G \to GL(V)$ is an $F$-representation; the classical bundle studied by Griffiths is recovered by taking $F=\mathbf Q$, $\mathbf G$ the Mumford-Tate group of $\mathscr V$, $r:\mathbf G \to GL(V)$ the tautological representation afforded by a very general fiber and p…
Based on Balmer's tensor triangular Chow group, we propose K-theoretic Chow groups of derived categories of noetherian schemes and their Milnor variants for regular schemes and their thickenings. We discuss functoriality and show that our Chow groups agree with the classical ones for regular schemes. Moreover, we also define tangent spaces to our Chow groups as usually and identify them with cohomology groups of differentials. As an application, we extend Bloch-Quillen identification and soule's variant from regular schemes to their thickenings. This gives a positive answer to a question by Gr…
Let $X$ be a projective algebraic manifold and let $CH^r(X)$ be the Chow group of algebraic cycles of codimension $r$ on $X$, modulo rational equivalence. Working with a candidate Bloch-Beilinson filtration $\{F^ν\}_{ν\geq 0}$ on $CH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q}$ due to the second author, we construct a space of arithmetic Hodge theoretic invariants $\nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$ and corresponding map $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν} : Gr_{F}^νCH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q} \to \nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$, and determine conditions on $X$ for which the kernel and image of $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν}$ are ``uncountably large''.
Consider three normalised cuspidal eigenforms of weight $2$ and prime level $p$. Under the assumption that the global root number of the associated triple product $L$-function is $+1$, we prove that the complex Abel-Jacobi image of the modified diagonal cycle of Gross-Kudla-Schoen on the triple product of the modular curve $X_0(p)$ is torsion in the corresponding Hecke isotypic component of the Griffiths intermediate Jacobian. The same result holds with the complex Abel-Jacobi map replaced by its étale counterpart. As an application, we deduce torsion properties of Chow-Heegner points associat…
Let F(X_d) be a smooth Fano variety of lines of a hypersurface X_d of degree d. In this paper, we prove the Griffiths group Griff_1(F(X_d)) is trivial if the hypersurface X_d is of 2-Fano type. As a result, we give a positive answer to a question of Professor Voisin about the first Griffiths groups of Fano varieties in some cases. Base on this result, we prove that CH_2(X_d)=\mathbb{Z} for a complex smooth $3$-Fano hypersurface X_d whose Fano variety of lines is smooth.
Unlike the classical Brauer group of a field, the Brauer-Grothendieck group of a singular scheme need not be torsion. We show that there exist integral normal projective surfaces over a large field of positive characteristic with non-torsion Brauer group. In contrast, we demonstrate that such examples cannot exist over the algebraic closure of a finite field.
The Witt group of a smooth curve over a real closed field is explicitely calculated. The method uses a comparison theorem between the graded Witt group and the etale cohomology groups. In the second part of the paper, the torsion Picard group of a smooth real curve is also computed. The calculation depends on a new invariant introduced here. We prove that several problems of real algebraic geometry are related to this invariant.
In this note we study Fano threefolds with noncyclic torsion in the divisor class group. Since they can all be obtained as quotients of Fano threefolds, we get also all examples that can be obtained as quotients of low codimension Fanos in the weighted projective space.
We give an example of an algebraic torus $T$ such that the group $\operatorname{CH}^2(BT)_{\operatorname{tors}}$ is non-trivial. This answers a question of Blinstein and Merkurjev.
We give bounds on the order of torsion in the Chow group of zero dimensional cycles for isotropic Grassmannians and Brauer-Severi flag varieties. To do this, we introduce tools to understand the behavior of torsion in Chow groups with coefficients under morphisms of proper varieties
In this paper we study the property of geometric equivalence of groups introduced by B. Plotkin \cite{P1, P2}. Sufficient and necessary conditions are presented for a $π$-torsion-free nilpotent group to be geometrically equivalent to its $π$-completion. We prove that a relatively free nilpotent $π$-torsion-free group and its $π$-completion define the same quasi-variety. Examples of $π$-torsion-free nilpotent groups that are geometrically equivalent to their $π$-completions are given.
For any number field, we prove that there exists an elliptic curve defined over this field such that its Shafarevich-Tate group has a nontrivial 2-torsion subgroup.
In this paper, we generalize a result of Karpenko on the torsion in the second quotient of the gamma filtration for Severi-Brauer varieties to higher degrees. As an application, we provide a nontrivial torsion in higher Chow groups and the topological filtration of the associated generic variety and obtain new upper bounds for the annihilators of the torsion subgroups in the Chow groups of a large class of Severi-Brauer varieties. In particular, using the torsion in higher degrees, we show indecomposability of certain algebras.
Given a finite set of $r$ points in a closed surface of genus $g$, we consider the torsion elements in the mapping class group of the surface leaving the finite set invariant. We show that the torsion elements generate the mapping class group if and only if $(g, r) \neq (2, 5k+4)$ for some integer $k$.
BY using Green-Griffiths' results on tangent spaces to algebraic cycles [4], we study the tangent space to $CH^{2}(X,1)$, where $X$ is a nonsingular projective curve over a field $k$ of characteristic $0$.
We are considering iterative derivations on the function field L of abelian schemes in positive characteristic p>0, and give conditions when the torsion group schemes of this abelian scheme occur as ID-automorphism groups, i.e. are the ID-Galois groups of L over certain ID-subfields. For an explicit example, we even give a construction of (a family of) such iterative derivations.
