We show that there are smooth complex projective varieties with infinite 2-torsion in their third Griffiths groups. It follows that the torsion subgroup of Griffiths groups is in general not finitely generated, thereby solving a problem of Schoen from 1992.
We relate the torsion part of the Abel-Jacobi kernel in the Griffiths group of 1-cycles to a birational invariant analogous to the degree 4 unramified cohomology and an invariant associated to the generalized Hodge conjecture in degree 2dim(X)-3. We also describe in terms of H-cohomology the Griffiths group of 1-cycles and the group of torsion cycles algebraically equivalent to zero of arbitrary dimension.
We prove that the degree k unramified cohomology with torsion coefficients of a smooth complex projective variety X with small CH_0(X) has a filtration of length [k/2], whose first piece is the torsion part of the quotient of the degree k+1 integral singular cohomology by its coniveau 2 subgroup, and whose next graded piece is controlled by the Griffiths group Griff^{k/2+1}(X) when k is even and is related to the higher Chow group CH^{(k+3)/2}(X, 1) when k is odd. The first piece is a generalization of the Artin-Mumford invariant (k=2) and the Colliot-Thelene-Voisin invariant (k=3). We also gi…
We prove that the Griffiths group of 3-cycles homologous to zero modulo algebraic equivalence, on a generic hypersurfaces of dimension 7 and degree 3 is not finitely generated, even when tensored with Q. Using this and a result of Nori, we give examples of varieties for which some Griffiths group is not finitely generated (modulo torsion) but whose corresponding intermediate Jacobian is trivial.
Given a generic curve of genus $g\geqslant4$ and a smooth point $L\in W_{g-1}^{1}(C)$, whose linear system is base-point free, we consider the Abel-Jacobi normal function associated to $L^{\otimes 2}\otimes ω_{C}^{-1}$, when $(C,L)$ varies in moduli. We prove that its infinitesimal invariant reconstruct the couple $(C,L)$. When $g=4$, we obtain the generic Torelli theorem proved by Griffiths.
The Griffiths group $\Gr^r(X)$ of a smooth projective variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field is defined to be the group of homologically trivial algebraic cycles of codimension $r$ on $X$ modulo the subgroup of algebraically trivial algebraic cycles. The main result of this paper is that the Griffiths group $\Gr^2(A_\kbar)$ of a supersingular abelian variety $A_\kbar$ over the algebraic closure of a finite field of characteristic $p$ is at most a $p$-primary torsion group. As a corollary the same conclusion holds for supersingular Fermat threefolds. In contrast, using methods of C. Sch…
Atiyah and Hirzebruch gave examples ofeven degree torsion classes in the singularcohomology of a smooth complex projective manifold, which arenot Poincaré dual to an algebraiccycle. We notice that the order ofthese classes are small comparedto the dimension of the manifold. However, building upon a construction ofKollàr, one can provide such examples witharbitrary high prime order, the dimension being fixed. This method alsoprovides examples of torsion algebraiccycles, which are non trivial in the Griffiths' groups, and lie in a arbitrary high level of the H.Saito filtration onChow groups.
We show that the cycle map on a variety X, from algebraic cycles modulo algebraic equivalence to integer cohomology, lifts canonically to a topologically defined quotient of the complex cobordism ring of X. This more refined cycle map gives a topological proof that the Griffiths group is nonzero for some varieties X, without any use of Hodge theory. We also use this more refined cycle map to give examples of torsion algebraic cycles which map to 0 in Deligne cohomology but are not algebraically equivalent to 0, thus answering some questions by Colliot-Thelene and Schoen.
We describe the Griffiths group of the product of a curve $C$ and a surface $S$ as a quotient of the Albanese kernel of $S$ over the function field of $C$. When $C$ is a hyperplane section of $S$ varying in a Lefschetz pencil, we prove the nonvanishing in $\text{Griff}(C\times S)$ of a modification of the graph of the embedding $C\hookrightarrow S$ for infinitely many members of the pencil, provided the ground field $k$ is of characteristic $0$, the geometric genus of $S$ is $>0$, and $k$ is large or $S$ is "of motivated abelian type".
Consider three normalised cuspidal eigenforms of weight $2$ and prime level $p$. Under the assumption that the global root number of the associated triple product $L$-function is $+1$, we prove that the complex Abel-Jacobi image of the modified diagonal cycle of Gross-Kudla-Schoen on the triple product of the modular curve $X_0(p)$ is torsion in the corresponding Hecke isotypic component of the Griffiths intermediate Jacobian. The same result holds with the complex Abel-Jacobi map replaced by its étale counterpart. As an application, we deduce torsion properties of Chow-Heegner points associat…
A deep result of Voisin asserts that the Griffiths group of a general non-rigid Calabi-Yau (CY) 3-fold is infinitely generated. This theorem builds on an earlier method of hers which was implemented by Albano and Collino to prove the same result for a general cubic sevenfold. In fact, Voisin's method can be utilized precisely because the variation of Hodge structure on a cubic 7-fold behaves just like the variation of Hodge structure of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We explain this relationship concretely using Kontsevitch's noncommutative geometry. Namely, we show that for a cubic 7-fold, there is a n…
We prove the infinitesimal Torelli theorem for general minimal complex surfaces X's with the first Chern number 3, the geometric genus 1, and the irregularity 0 which have non-trivial 3-torsion divisors. We also show that the coarse moduli space for surfaces with the invariants as above is a 14-dimensional unirational variety.
There exists the Krichever map from the set of quintets (C,p,F,t,e) (where C is an integral and complete algebraic curve, p a smooth rational point, F a rank 2 torsion free coherent sheaf on C, t a local formal parameter in p and e a formal trivialization of F around p) to the infinite Grassmanian of $k((z)) \oplus k((z))$. We describe the images of quintets with (semi)stable sheaves F in terms of Plucker coordinates and get some analog of GIT Hilbert-Mumford numerical criterion with respect to actions of some 1-parametric subgroups of the group $SL(2,k[[z]])$ on the determinant bundle of the …
Let $K$ be a field finitely generated over the field of rational numbers, $K(c)$ the extension of $K$ obtained by adjoining all roots of unity, $L$ an infinite Galois extension of $K$, $X$ an abelian variety defined over $K$. We prove that under certain conditions on $X$ and $K$ the existence of infinitely many L-rational points of finite order on $X$ implies that the intersection of $L$ and $K(c)$ has infinite degree over $K$.

Although it is not known which groups can appear as torsion groups of elliptic curves over cubic number fields, it is known which groups can appear for infinitely many non-isomorphic curves. We denote the set of these groups as $S$. In this paper we deal with three problems concerning the torsion of elliptic curves over cubic fields. First, we study the possible torsion groups of elliptic curves that appear over the field with smallest absolute value of its discriminant and having Galois group $S_3$ and over the field with smallest absolute value of its discriminant and having Galois group $\Z…
We show, for a smooth projective variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ with an effective Cartier divisor $D$, that the torsion subgroup $\CH_0(X|D)\{l\}$ can be described in terms of a relative {é}tale cohomology for any prime $l \neq p = {\rm char}(k)$. This extends a classical result of Bloch, on the torsion in the ordinary Chow group, to the modulus setting. We prove the Roitman torsion theorem (including $p$-torsion) for $\CH_0(X|D)$ when $D$ is reduced. We deduce applications to the problem of invariance of the prime-to-$p$ torsion in $\CH_0(X|D)$ under an infinitesimal exten…
For a prime number p, we characterize the groups that may arise as torsion subgroups of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication defined over a number field of degree 2p. In particular, our work shows that a classification in the strongest sense is tied to determining whether there exist infinitely many Sophie Germain primes.
Given an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ with torsion subgroup $G = E(\mathbb{Q})_{\rm tors}$ we study what groups (up to isomorphism) can occur as the torsion subgroup of $E$ base-extended to $K$, a degree 6 extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. We also determine which groups $H = E(K)_{\rm tors}$ can occur infinitely often and which ones occur for only finitely many curves. This article is a first step towards a complete classification of torsion growth of over sextic fields.
In 1983 Silverman and Tate showed that the set of points in a 1-dimensional family of abelian varieties where a section of infinite order has `small height' is finite. We conjecture a generalisation to higher-dimensional families, where we replace `finite' by `not Zariski dense'. We show that this conjecture would imply the Uniform Boundedness Conjecture for torsion points on abelian varieties. We then prove a few special cases of this new conjecture.
This note discusses some examples showing that the crystalline cohomology of even very mildly singular projective varieties tends to be quite large. In particular, any singular projective variety with at worst ordinary double points has infinitely generated crystalline cohomology in at least two cohomological degrees. These calculations rely critically on comparisons between crystalline and derived de Rham cohomology.
