For any $n\ge 2$ and fixed $k\ge 1$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for an arbitrary nonzero square matrix in the matrix ring $\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{F})$ to be written as a sum of an invertible matrix $U$ and a nilpotent matrix $N$ with $N^k=0$ over an arbitrary field $\mathbb{F}$.
We investigate invertible matrices over finite additively idempotent semirings. The main result provides a criterion for the invertibility of such matrices. We also give a construction of the inverse matrix and a formula for the number of invertible matrices.
By modifying the proof of a paper by O. Bournez and M. Branicky, we establish that the Matrix Mortality Problem is decidable with any finite set of $2\times2$ matrices which has at most one invertible matrix. The same modification also shows that the number of non-invertible matrices is irrelevant.
An algebraic analogue of the family of Fredholm operators is introduced for the family of row and column finite matrices, dubbed "Fredholm matrices." In addition, a measure is introduced which indicates how far a Fredholm matrix is from an invertible matrix. It is further shown that this measure respects multiplication, is invariant under perturbation by a matrix from $M_\infty(K)$, and is invariant under conjugation by an invertible row and column finite matrix.
In this paper, we prove that the semigroups of invertible matrices with nonnegative elements over linearly oredered associative rings are elementarily equivalent if and only if the matrices have the same dimension and the rings are elementarily equivalent as ordered rings.
In this paper we prove that every automorphism of the semigroup of invertible matrices with nonnegative elements over a linearly oredered associative ring on some specially defined subgroup concides with the composition of an inner automorphism of the semigroup, an automorphism of the ring preserving the order, and a central homothety.
Hua's fundamental theorem of geometry of hermitian matrices characterizes all bijective maps on the space of all hermitian matrices, which preserve adjacency in both directions. In this and subsequent paper we characterize maps on the set of all invertible hermitian matrices over a finite field, which preserve adjacency in one direction. This and author's previous result are used to obtain two new results related to maps that preserve the `speed of light' on finite Minkowski space-time. In this first paper it is shown that maps that preserve adjacency on the set of all invertible hermitian mat…
Maps that preserve adjacency on the set of all invertible hermitian matrices over a finite field are characterized. It is shown that such maps form a group that is generated by the maps $A\mapsto PAP^{\ast}$, $A\mapsto A^σ$, and $A\mapsto A^{-1}$, where $P$ is an invertible matrix, $P^{\ast}$ is its conjugate transpose, and $σ$ is an automorphism of the underlying field. Bijectivity of maps is not an assumption but a conclusion. Moreover, adjacency is assumed to be preserved in one directions only. The main result and author's previous result [16] are applied to characterize maps that preserve…
Suppose that R is an ordered ring, G_n(R) is a subsemigroup of $GL_n(R)$, consisting of all matrices with nonnegative elements. A.V. Mikhalev and M.A. Shatalova described all automorphisms of G_n(R), where R is a linearly ordered skewfield and n>1. E.I. Bunina and A.V. Mikhalev found all automorphisms of G_n(R), if R is an arbitrary linearly ordered associative ring with 1/2, n>2. In this paper we describe automorphisms of G_n(R), if R is a commutative partially ordered ring, containing Q, n>2.
Let the columns of a $p \times q$ matrix $M$ over any ring be partitioned into $n$ blocks, $M = [M_1, ..., M_n]$. If no $p \times p$ submatrix of $M$ with columns from distinct blocks $M_i$ is invertible, then there is an invertible $p \times p$ matrix $Q$ and a positive integer $m \leq p$ such that $QM = [QM_1, ..., QM_n]$ is in reduced echelon form and in all but at most $m-1$ blocks $QM_i$ the last $m$ entries of each column are either all zero or they include a non-zero non-unit.
We give an elementary proof of a Caratheodory-type result on the invertibility of a sum of matrices, due first to Facchini and Barioli. The proof yields a polynomial identity, expressing the determinant of a large sum of matrices in terms of determinants of smaller sums. Interpreting these results over an arbitrary commutative ring gives a stabilization result for a filtered family of ideals of determinants. Generalizing in another direction gives a characterization of local rings. An analogous result for semilocal rings is also given -- interestingly, the semilocal case reduces to the case of…
We establish a factorisation theorem for invertible, cross-symmetric, totally nonnegative matrices, and illustrate the theory by verifying that certain cases of Holte's Amazing Matrix are totally nonnegative.
We study exponential factorization of invertible matrices over unital complex Banach algebras. In particular, we prove that every invertible matrix with entries in the algebra of holomorphic functions on a closed bordered Riemann surface can be written as a product of two exponents of matrices over this algebra. Our result extends similar results proved earlier in [KS] and [L] for $2\times 2$ matrices.
A generalized inversion of block T+H matrix is obtained for the first time. In a particular case when T+H matrix is invertible, the method allows to obtain its inverse matrix without an additional condition of invertibility of the corresponding T-H matrix.
We study the multiplication operation of square matrices over lattices. If the underlying lattice is distributive, then matrices form a semigroup; we investigate idempotent and nilpotent elements and the maximal subgroups of this matrix semigroup. We prove that matrix multiplication over nondistributive lattices is antiassociative, and we determine the invertible matrices in the case when the least or the greatest element of the lattice is irreducible.
We describe isomorphisms of groups of several periodic infinite matrices and isomorphisms of groups of invertible elements of unital locally matrix algebras.
In this paper, we present new necessary and sufficient conditions under which the sum of two group invertible elements in a Banach algebra has group inverse. We then apply these results to block operator matrices over Banach spaces. The group inverses of certain operator block matrices are thereby obtained. Additionally, this paper extends the results obtained in \cite{L}.
In this note, we compute the probability that a $k\times n$ matrix can be extended to an $n\times n$ invertible matrix over $\F_q[x]$, which turns out to be $(1-q^{k-n})(1-q^{k-1-n})...(1-q^{1-n})$. Connections with Dirichlet's density theorem on the co-prime integers and its various generalizations are also presented.
Given a block triangular matrix $M$ over a noncommutative ring with invertible diagonal blocks, this work gives two new representations of its inverse $M^{-1}$. Each block element of $M^{-1}$ is explicitly expressed via a quasideterminant of a submatrix of $M$ with the block Hessenberg type. Accordingly another representation for each inverse block is attained, which is in terms of recurrence relationship with multiple terms among blocks of $M^{-1}$. The latter result allows us to perform an off-diagonal rectangular perturbation analysis for the inverse calculation of $M$. An example is given …
The Zorn's Algebra ZZ(R) has a multiplicative function called determinant with properties similar to the usual one. The set of elements in ZZ(R) with determinant 1 is a Moufang loop that we will denote by \GA. In our main result we prove that if R is a Dedekind algebraic number domain that contains an infinite order unit, each finite index subloop L, such that \GA has the weak Lagrange property relative to L, is congruence subloop. In addition, if R=\Z, then we present normal subloops of finite index in \GA that are not congruence subloops.
For an arbitrary associative unital ring $R$, let $J_1$ and $J_2$ be the following noncommutative birational partly defined involutions on the set $M_3(R)$ of $3\times 3$ matrices over $R$: $J_1(M)=M^{-1}$ (the usual matrix inverse) and $J_2(M)_{jk}=(M_{kj})^{-1}\,$ (the transpose of the Hadamard inverse). We prove the following surprising conjecture by Kontsevich saying that $(J_2\circ J_1)^3$ is the identity map modulo the ${\rm Diag}_{L} \times \rm{Diag}_R$ action $(D_1,D_2)(M)=D_1^{-1}MD_2$ of pairs of invertible diagonal matrices. That is, we show that for each $M$ in the domain where $(J…
