The directed landscape is a random directed metric on the plane that arises as the scaling limit of classical metric models in the KPZ universality class. Typical pairs of points in the directed landscape are connected by a unique geodesic. However, there are exceptional pairs of points connected by more complicated geodesic networks. We show that up to isomorphism there are exactly $27$ geodesic networks that appear in the directed landscape, and find Hausdorff dimensions in a scaling-adapted metric on $\mathbb R^4_\uparrow$ for the sets of endpoints of each of these networks.
When the value $L$ of the directed landscape at a point $(\mathbf{p};\mathbf{q})$ is sufficiently large, the geodesic from $\mathbf{p}$ to $\mathbf{q}$ is rigid and its location fluctuates of order $L^{-1/4}$ around its expectation. We further show that at a midpoint of the geodesic, the location of the geodesic and the value of the directed landscape after appropriate scaling converge to two independent Gaussians.
Consider the restriction of the directed landscape $\mathcal L(x, s; y, t)$ to a set of the form $\{x_1, \dots, x_k\} \times \{s_0\} \times \mathbb R \times \{t_0\}$. We show that on any such set, the directed landscape is given by a last passage problem across $k$ locally Brownian functions. The $k$ functions in this last passage isometry are built from certain marginals of the extended directed landscape. As applications of this construction, we show that the Airy difference profile is locally absolutely continuous with respect to Brownian local time, that the KPZ fixed point started from tw…
We study maximal length collections of disjoint paths, or 'disjoint optimizers', in the directed landscape. We show that disjoint optimizers always exist, and that their lengths can be used to construct an extended directed landscape. The extended directed landscape can be built from an independent collection of extended Airy sheets, which we define from the parabolic Airy line ensemble. We show that the extended directed landscape and disjoint optimizers are scaling limits of the corresponding objects in Brownian last passage percolation (LPP). As two consequences of this work, we show that o…
Within the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class, the space-time Airy sheet is conjectured to be the canonical scaling limit for last passage percolation models. In recent work arXiv:1812.00309 of Dauvergne, Ortmann, and Virág, this object was constructed and shown to be the limit after parabolic correction of one such model: Brownian last passage percolation. This limit object, called the directed landscape, admits geodesic paths between any two space-time points $(x,s)$ and $(y,t)$ with $s<t$. In this article, we examine fractal properties of the set of these paths. Our main results concern…
The Directed Landscape, a random directed metric on the plane (where the first and the second coordinates are termed spatial and temporal respectively), was constructed in the breakthrough work of Dauvergne, Ortmann, and Virág, and has since been shown to be the scaling limit of various integrable models of Last Passage percolation, a central member of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. It exhibits several scale invariance properties making it a natural source of rich fractal behavior. Such a study was initiated in Basu-Ganguly-Hammond, where the difference profile i.e., the differenc…
For first passage percolation (FPP) on integer lattice with i.i.d. passage time distributions, in order to show existence of semi-infinite geodesics along a fixed direction, one requires unproven assumptions on the limiting shape. We consider FPP on two-dimensional integer lattice with i.i.d. passage times distributed as Durrett-Liggett class of measures. For this model, we show that along any direction in a deterministic angular sector (known as percolation cone), starting from every lattice point there exists an infinite geodesic along that direction and such directed geodesics coalesce almo…
The directed landscape constructed in (Dauvergne-Ortmann-Virag '18) produces a directed, planar, random geometry, and is believed to be the universal scaling limit of two-dimensional first and last passage percolation models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. Geodesics in this random geometry form an important class of random continuous curves exhibiting fluctuation theory quite different from that of Brownian motion. In this vein, counterpart to Brownian local time, BLT (a self-similar measure supported on the set of zeros of Brownian motion), a local time for geodesics, GLT…
We present a proof of the almost sure existence, uniqueness and coalescence of directed semi-infinite geodesics in planar growth models that is based on properties of an increment-stationary version of the growth process. The argument is developed in the context of the exponential corner growth model. It uses coupling, planar monotonicity, and properties of the stationary growth process to derive the existence of Busemann functions, which in turn control geodesics. This soft approach is in some situations an alternative to the much-applied 20-year-old arguments of C. Newman and co-authors. Alo…
For directed Bernoulli last passage percolation with i.i.d.~weights on vertices over a $n\times n$ grid and for $n$ large enough, the geodesics are shown to be concentrated in a cylinder, centered on the main diagonal and of width of order $n^{(2κ+2)/(2κ+3)}\sqrt{\ln n}$, where $1\leκ<\infty$ is the curvature power of the shape function at $(1,1)$. The methodology of proof is robust enough to also apply to directed Bernoulli first passage site percolation, and further to longest common subsequences in random words.
In this survey article we consider the directed last-passage percolation model on the planar square lattice with nearest-neighbor steps and general i.i.d. weights on the vertices, outside of the class of exactly solvable models. We show how stationary cocycles are constructed from queueing fixed points and how these cocycles characterize the limit shape, yield existence of Busemann functions in directions where the shape has some regularity, describe the direction of the competition interface, and answer questions on existence, uniqueness, and coalescence of directional semi-infinite geodesics…
We provide a framework for proving convergence to the directed landscape, the central object in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. For last passage models, we show that compact convergence to the Airy line ensemble implies convergence to the Airy sheet. In i.i.d. environments, we show that Airy sheet convergence implies convergence of distances and geodesics to their counterparts in the directed landscape. Our results imply convergence of classical last passage models and interacting particle systems. Our framework is built on the notion of a directed metric, a generalization of metri…
We study the directed last-passage percolation model on the planar integer lattice with nearest-neighbor steps and general i.i.d. weights on the vertices, outside the class of exactly solvable models. In a previous paper we constructed stationary cocycles and Busemann functions for this model. Using these objects, we prove new results on the competition interface, on existence, uniqueness, and coalescence of directional semi-infinite geodesics, and on nonexistence of doubly infinite geodesics.
We consider the continuum directed random polymer (CDRP) model that arises as a scaling limit from $1+1$ dimensional directed polymers in the intermediate disorder regime. We show that for a point-to-point polymer of length $t$ and any $p\in (0,1)$, the quenched density of the point on the path which is $pt$ distance away from the origin when centered around its random mode $\mathcal{M}_{p,t}$ converges in law to an explicit random density function as $t\to\infty$ without any scaling. Similarly, in the case of point-to-line polymers of length $t$, the quenched density of the endpoint of the pa…
Heat flows in 1+1 dimensional stochastic environment converge after scaling to the random geometry described by the directed landscape. In this first part, we show that the O'Connell-Yor polymer and the KPZ equation converge to the KPZ fixed point. The key is that one-dimensional Baik-Ben Arous-Peche statistics characterize the KPZ fixed point. This yields a general and elementary method that shows convergence based on previously established limit theorems. Independently, at the same time and place Quastel and Sharkar gave an unrelated proof of KPZ convergence. The methods invite extensions in…
Coalescence of semi-infinite geodesics remains a central question in planar first passage percolation. In this paper we study finer properties of the coalescence structure of finite and semi-infinite geodesics for exactly solvable models of last passage percolation. Consider directed last passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with i.i.d. exponential weights on the vertices. Fix two points $v_1=(0,0)$ and $v_2=(0, \lfloor k^{2/3} \rfloor)$ for some $k>0$, and consider the maximal paths $Γ_1$ and $Γ_2$ starting at $v_1$ and $v_2$ respectively to the point $(n,n)$ for $n\gg k$. Our object of stud…
