Nitrogen vacancy doped SmN$_{1-δ}$ is a semiconductor which lies in the intermediary between insulating-ferromagnetic SmN and metallic-anti-ferromagnetic Sm. The dopant electrons resulting from nitrogen vacancies have recently been predicted to lie in a band precipitated by a majority-spin 4$f$ level on the six Sm ions neighbouring each nitrogen vacancy, an in-gap state $\sim$1 eV below the 4$f$ states in stoichiometric SmN. Optical data reported here corroborate the prediction along with an extended computational study. Electrical transport measurements show the transition from an insulating to metallic state with a hopping type conductivity in dilutely doped films. We provide strong evidence that electron transport is mediated by a dispersion-less majority spin defect band implying triplet type superconductivity, the location of which in the SmN-Sm phase diagram suggests the location of a quantum critical point.
It is shown that unconventional critical phenomena commonly observed in paramagnetic metals YbRh2Si2, YbRh2(Si0.95Ge0.05)2, and beta-YbAlB4 is naturally explained by the quantum criticality of Yb-valence fluctuations. We construct the mode coupling theory taking account of local correlation effects of f electrons and find that unconventional criticality is caused by the locality of the valence fluctuation mode. We show that measured low-temperature anomalies such as divergence of uniform spin susceptibility $χT^{-ζ)$ with $ζ~0.6$ giving rise to a huge enhancement of the Wilson ratio and the em…
The discovery of materials that simultaneously host different phases of matter has often initially confounded, but ultimately enhanced, our basic understanding of the coexisting types of order. The associated intellectual challenges, together with the promise of greater versatility for potential applications, have made such systems a focus of modern materials science. In particular, great efforts have recently been devoted to making semiconductors ferromagnetic and metallic ferromagnets superconducting. Here we report the unprecedented observation of a heavily donor-doped ferromagnetic semicon…
With understood exceptions, conventional superconductivity does not coexist with long-range magnetic order[1]. In contrast, unconventional superconductivity develops near a boundary separating magnetically ordered and magnetically disordered phases[2,3]. A maximum in the superconducting transition temperature Tc develops where this boundary extrapolates to T=0 K, suggesting that fluctuations associated with this magnetic quantum-critical point are essential for unconventional superconductivity[4,5]. Invariably though, unconventional superconductivity hides the magnetic boundary when T < Tc, pr…
At the nematic quantum critical point that exists in the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting dome of cuprates, the massless nodal fermions interact strongly with the quantum critical fluctuation of nematic order. We study this problem by means of renormalization group approach and show that, the fermion damping rate $\left|\mathrm{Im}Σ^R(ω)\right|$ vanishes more rapidly than the energy $ω$ and the quasiparticle residue $Z_f\rightarrow 0$ in the limit $ω\rightarrow 0$. The nodal fermions thus constitute an unconventional non-Fermi liquid that represents an even weaker violation of Fermi liquid t…
I present the results of first principles calculations of the electronic structure and magnetic interactions for the recently discovered superconductor YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ and use them to identify the nature of superconductivity and quantum criticality in this compound. I find that the Fe $3d$ derived states near the Fermi level show a rich structure with the presence of both linearly dispersive and heavy bands. The Fermi surface exhibits nesting between hole and electron sheets that manifests as a peak in the susceptibility at $(1/2,1/2)$. I propose that the superconductivity in this compound is me…
In this paper the low-temperature properties of two isostructural canonical heavy-fermion compounds are contrasted with regards to the interplay between antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum criticality and superconductivity. For CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, fully-gapped d-wave superconductivity forms in the vicinity of an itinerant three-dimensional heavy-fermion spin-density-wave (SDW) quantum critical point (QCP). Inelastic neutron scattering results highlight that both quantum critical SDW fluctuations as well as Mott-type fluctuations of local magnetic moments contribute to the formation of Cooper pairs in C…
Superconductivity and magnetism are mutually exclusive in most alloys and elements, so it is striking that superconductivity emerges around a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) in many strongly correlated electron systems (SCES). In the latter case superconductivity is believed to be unconventional and directly influenced by the QCP. However, experimentally unconventional superconductivity has neither been established nor directly been linked to any mechanism of the QCP. Here we report measurements in the heavy-fermion superconductors CeIrSi$_3$ and CeRhSi$_3$. The measurements were perform…
Many unconventional superconductors exhibit a common set of anomalous charge transport properties that characterize them as `strange metals', which provides hope that there is single theory that describes them. However, model-independent connections between the strange metal and superconductivity have remained elusive. In this letter, we show that the Hall effect of the unconventional superconductor BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ contains an anomalous contribution arising from the correlations within the strange metal. This term has a distinctive dependence on magnetic field, which allows us to…
A new universality class of quantum criticality emerging in itinerant electron systems with strong local electron correlations is discussed. The quantum criticality of a Ce- or Yb-valence transition gives us a unified explanation for unconventional criticality commonly observed in heavy fermion metals such as YbRh2Si2 and β-YbAlB4, YbCu5-xAlx, and CeIrIn5. The key origin is due to the locality of the critical valence fluctuation mode emerging near the quantum critical end point of the first-order valence transition, which is caused by strong electron correlations for f electrons. Wider relevan…

Non-Fermi liquids (NFL) are a class of strongly interacting gapless fermionic systems without long-lived quasiparticle excitations. An important group of NFL model features itinerant fermions coupled to soft bosonic fluctuations near a quantum-critical point (QCP), and are widely believed to capture the essential physics of many unconventional superconductors. However numerically the direct observation of a canonical NFL behavior in such systems, characterized by a power-law form in the Green's function, has been elusive. Here we consider a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK)-like model with random Yukawa…
We review the studies on the emergent phases of superconductvity and magnetism in the $f$-electron derived heavy-fermion (HF) systems by means of the nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) under pressure. These studies have unraveled a rich variety of the phenomena in the ground state of HF systems. In this article, we highlight the novel phase diagrams of magnetism and unconventional superconductivity (SC) in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, HF antiferromagnets CeRhIn$_5$, and CeIn$_3$. A new light is shed on the difference and common features on the interplay between magnetism and SC on the magnetic criticality.
The tetragonal heavy-fermion metal YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ orders antiferromagnetically at $T_{\rm N} = 70$ mK and exhibits an unconventional quantum critical point (QCP) of Kondo-destroying type at $B_{\rm N} = 60$ mT, for the magnetic field applied within the basal ($a,b$) plane. Ultra-low-temperature magnetization and heat-capacity measurements at very low fields indicate that the 4$f$-electronic antiferromagnetic (AF) order is strongly suppressed by a nuclear-dominated hybrid order (`A-phase') at $T_{\rm A} \le 2.3$ mK, such that quantum critical fluctuations develop at $B \approx 0$ (Schuberth et …
Two major themes in the physics of condensed matter are quantum critical phenomena and unconventional superconductivity. These usually occur in the context of competing interactions in systems of strongly-correlated electrons. All this interesting physics comes together in the behavior of the recently discovered iron pnictide compounds that have generated enormous interest because of their moderately high-temperature superconductivity. The ubiquity of antiferromagnetic ordering in their phase diagrams naturally raises the question of the relevance of magnetic quantum criticality, but the answe…
Quantum criticality describes the collective fluctuations of matter undergoing a second-order phase transition at zero temperature. Heavy fermion metals have in recent years emerged as prototypical systems to study quantum critical points. There have been considerable efforts, both experimental and theoretical, which use these magnetic systems to address problems that are central to the broad understanding of strongly correlated quantum matter. Here, we summarize some of the basic issues, including i) the extent to which the quantum criticality in heavy fermion metals goes beyond the standard …
Electronic nematicity in correlated metals often occurs alongside another instability such as magnetism. As a result, the question remains whether nematicity alone can drive unconventional superconductivity or anomalous (quantum critical) transport in such systems. In FeSe, nematicity emerges in isolation, providing a unique opportunity to address this question. Studies to date, however, have proved inconclusive; while signatures of nematic criticality are observed upon sulfur substitution, they appear to be quenched under the application of pressure due to the emergent magnetism. Here, we stu…
Superconductivity is a remarkably widespread phenomenon observed in most metals cooled down to very low temperatures. The ubiquity of such conventional superconductors, and the wide range of associated critical temperatures, is readily understood in terms of the celebrated Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. Occasionally, however, unconventional superconductors are found, such as the iron-based materials, which extend and defy this understanding in new and unexpected ways. In the case of the iron-based superconductors, this includes a new appreciation of the ways in which the presence of m…
We investigated the elastic properties of the iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 with eight Co concentrations. The elastic constant C66 shows large elastic softening associated with the structural phase transition. The C66 was analyzed base on localized and itinerant pictures of Fe-3d electrons, which shows the strong electron-lattice coupling and a possible mass enhancement in this system. The results resemble those of unconventional superconductors, where the properties of the system are governed by the quantum fluctuations associated with the zero-temperature critical point of the l…
Employing the elemental sensitivity of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we study the valence and magnetic order in the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$. We probe spin population of the f-electrons in Ce and d-electrons in Co as a function of temperature (down to 0.1 K) and magnetic field (up to 6 T). From the XAS we find a pronounced contribution of Ce$^{4+}$ component at low temperature and a clear temperature dependence of the Ce valence below 5 K, suggesting enhanced valence fluctuations, an indication for the presence of a nearby quan…

Symmetry breaking beyond a global U(1) phase is the key signature of unconventional superconductors. As prototypical strongly correlated materials, heavy-fermion metals provide ideal platforms for realizing unconventional superconductivity. In this article, we review heavy-fermion superconductivity, with a focus on those materials with multiple superconducting phases. In this context, we highlight the role of orbital-selective (matrix) pairing functions, which are defined as matrices in the space of effective orbital degrees of freedom such as electronic orbitals and sublattices as well as equ…
We report on the pressure-induced unconventional superconductivity in the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeIn3 by means of nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) studies conducted under a high pressure. The temperature and pressure dependences of the NQR spectra have revealed a first-order quantum-phase transition (QPT) from an AFM to PM at a critical pressure Pc=2.46 GPa. Despite the lack of an AFM quantum critical point in the P-T phase diagram, we highlight the fact that the unconventional SC occurs in both phases of the AFM and PM. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 in the AFM phase …
In the physics of condensed matter, quantum critical phenomena and unconventional superconductivity are two major themes. In electron doped cuprates, the low upper critical field allows one to study the putative QCP at low temperature and to understand its connection to the long standing problem of the origin of the high Tc superconductivity. Here we present measurements of the low temperature normal state thermopower (S) of the electron-doped cuprate superconductor La2-xCexCuO4 (LCCO) from x=0.11 to 0.19. We observe quantum critical S divided by T versus ln(1/T) behavior over an unexpectedly …

Forward and backscattering play an exceptional role in the physics of two-dimensional interacting fermions. In a Fermi liquid, both give rise to a non-analytic $ω^2 \log(ω)$ form of the fermionic scattering rate at second order in the interaction. Here we argue that higher powers of $\log(ω)$ appearin the backscattering contribution at higher orders. We show that these terms come from "planar" processes, which are effectively one-dimensional. This is explicitly demonstated by extending a Fermi liquid to the limit of $N \gg 1$ fermionic flavors, when only planar processes survive. We sum the le…
We report the discovery of exotic superconductivity (SC) and novel magnetism in heavy-fermion (HF) compounds, CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, CeRhIn$_5$ and CeIn$_3$ through nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) measurements under pressure ($P$). The exotic SC in a homogeneous CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ revealed antiferromagnetic critical fluctuations at the border to antiferromagnetism (AFM) or marginal AFM. The uniform mixed phase of SC and AFM in CeCu$_2$(Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$)$_2$ emerges on a microscopic level, once a tiny amount of 1%Ge($x=0.01$) is substituted for Si to expand its lattice. The application of minute pressu…

Whether a quantum critical point (QCP) lies beneath the superconducting dome has been a long-standing issue that remains unresolved in many classes of unconventional superconductors, notably cuprates, heavy fermion compounds and most recently iron-pnictides. The existence of a QCP may offer a route to understand: the origin of their anomalous non-Fermi liquid properties, the microscopic coexistence between unconventional superconductivity and magnetic or some exotic order, and ultimately the mechanism of superconductivity itself. The isovalent substituted iron-pnictide BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$…
We use the renormalization group method to study the normal state of quasi-one-dimensional superconductors nearby a spin-density-wave instability. On the basis of one-loop scattering amplitudes for the quasi-one-dimensional electron gas, the integration of the renormalization group equations for the two-loop single particle Matsubara self-energy leads to a nonFermi-liquid temperature downturn of the momentum-resolved quasi-particle weight over most part of the Fermi surface. The amplitude of the downturn correlates with the entire instability line for superconductivity, defining an extended qu…

Quasiperiodicity has long been known to be a potential platform to explore exotic phenomena, realizing an intricate middle point between ordered solids and disordered matter. In particular, quasiperiodic structures are promising playgrounds to engineer critical wavefunctions, a powerful starting point to engineer exotic correlated states. Here we show that systems hosting a quasiperiodic modulation of antiferromagnetism and spin-singlet superconductivity, as realized by atomic chains in twisted van der Waals materials, host a localization-delocalization transition as a function of the coupling…

The nematic electronic state and its associated nematic critical fluctuations have emerged as potential candidates for superconducting pairing in various unconventional superconductors. However, in most materials their coexistence with other magnetically-ordered phases poses significant challenges in establishing their importance. Here, by combining chemical and hydrostatic physical pressure in FeSe$_{0.89}$S$_{0.11}$, we provide a unique access to a clean nematic quantum phase transition in the absence of a long-range magnetic order. We find that in the proximity of the nematic phase transiti…
The pressure dependent electrical resistivity of URu$_2$Si$_2$ has been studied at high pressure across the first order phase boundary of $P_x$ where the ground state switches under pressure from "hidden order" (HO) to large moment antiferromagnetic (LAFM) states. The electrical transport in URu$_2$Si$_2$ at low temperatures shows a strong sample dependence. We have measured an ultra-clean single crystal whose quality is the highest among those used in previous studies. The generalized power law $ρ{\,}={\,}{ρ_0}+{\,}{A_n}T{^n}$ analysis finds that the electric transport property deviates from …
At ambient pressure CrAs undergoes a first-order transition into a double-helical magnetic state at TN = 265 K, which is accompanied by a structural transition. The recent discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in CrAs makes it important to clarify the nature of quantum phase transitions out of its coupled structural/helimagnetic order. Here we show, via neutron diffraction on the single-crystal CrAs under hydrostatic pressure (P), that the combined order is suppressed at Pc ~ 10 kbar, near which bulk superconductivity develops with a maximal transition temperature Tc ~ 2 K. We furthe…
Measurements of specific heat and electrical resistivity in magnetic fields up to 9 T along [001] and temperatures down to 50 mK of Sn-substituted CeCoIn5 are reported. The maximal -ln(T) divergence of the specific heat at the upper critical field H_{c2} down to the lowest temperature characteristic of non-Fermi liquid systems at the quantum critical point (QCP), the universal scaling of the Sommerfeld coefficient, and agreement of the data with spin-fluctuation theory, provide strong evidence for quantum criticality at H_{c2} for all x < 0.12 in CeCoIn5-xSnx. These results indicate the "accid…
Quantum critical fluctuations may prove to play an instrumental role in the formation of unconventional superconductivity. Here, we show that the characteristic scaling of a marginal Fermi liquid is present in inelastic light scattering data of an Fe-based superconductor tuned through a quantum critical point (QCP) by chemical substitution or doping. From the doping dependence of the imaginary time dynamics we are able to distinguish regions dominated by quantum critical behavior from those having classical critical responses. This dichotomy reveals a connection between the marginal Fermi liqu…
In several unconventional superconductors, the highest superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ is found in a region of the phase diagram where the antiferromagnetic transition temperature extrapolates to zero, signaling a putative quantum critical point. The elucidation of the interplay between these two phenomena - high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity and magnetic quantum criticality - remains an important piece of the complex puzzle of unconventional superconductivity. In this paper, we combine sign-problem-free Quantum Monte Carlo simulations and field-theoretical analytical calculations t…
Dramatic evolution of properties with minute change in the doping level is a hallmark of the complex chemistry which governs cuprate superconductivity as manifested in the celebrated superconducting domes as well as quantum criticality taking place at precise compositions. The strange metal state, where the resistivity varies linearly with temperature, has emerged as a central feature in the normal state of cuprate superconductors. The ubiquity of this behavior signals an intimate link between the scattering mechanism and superconductivity. However, a clear quantitative picture of the correlat…
