In the context of the shuffle theorem, many classical integer sequences appear with a natural refinement by two statistics $q$ and $t$: for example the Catalan and Schröder numbers. In particular, the bigraded Hilbert series of diagonal harmonics is a $q,t$-analog of $(n+1)^{n-1}$ (and can be written in terms of symmetric functions via the nabla operator). The motivation for this work is the observation that at $q=-1$, this $q,t$-analog becomes a $t$-analog of Euler numbers, a famous integer sequence that counts alternating permutations. We prove this observation via a more general statement, that involves the Delta operator on symmetric functions (on one side), and new combinatorial statistics on permutations involving peaks and valleys (on the other side). An important tool are the schedule numbers of a parking function first introduced by Hicks; and expanded upon by Haglund and Sergel. Other empirical observation suggest that nonnegativity at $q=-1$ holds in far greater generality.
A survey of recent progress in three areas of algebraic combinatorics: (1) the Saturation Conjecture for Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, (2) the n! and (n+1)^{n-1} conjectures, and (3) longest increasing subsequences of permutations.
In this paper we show examples for applications of the Bombieri-Lang conjecture in additive combinatorics, giving bounds on the cardinality of sumsets of squares and higher powers of integers. Using similar methods we give bounds on the sum-product problem for matchings.
We define a module that is an extension of the diagonal harmonics and whose graded Frobenius characteristic is conjectured to be the symmetric function expression which appears in `the Delta conjecture' of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson [arXiv:1509.07058].
We study two conjectures in additive combinatorics. The first is the polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa conjecture, which relates to the structure of sets with small doubling. The second is the inverse Gowers conjecture for $U^3$, which relates to functions which locally look like quadratics. In both cases a weak form, with exponential decay of parameters is known, and a strong form with only a polynomial loss of parameters is conjectured. Our main result is that the two conjectures are in fact equivalent.
Inspired by [Qiu, Wilson 2019] and [D'Adderio, Iraci, Vanden Wyngaerd 2019 - Delta Square], we formulate a generalised Delta square conjecture (valley version). Furthermore, we use similar techniques as in [Haglund, Sergel 2019] to obtain a schedule formula for the combinatorics of our conjecture. We then use this formula to prove that the (generalised) valley version of the Delta conjecture implies our (generalised) valley version of the Delta square conjecture. This implication broadens the argument in [Sergel 2016], relying on the formulation of the touching version in terms of the $Θ_f$ op…
We prove the cases q=0 and t=0 of the generalized Delta conjecture of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson involving the symmetric function $Δ_{h_m}Δ_{e_{n-k-1}}'e_n$. Our theorem generalizes recent results by Garsia, Haglund, Remmel and Yoo. This proves also the case q=0 of our recent generalized Delta square conjecture.
The Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson is a recent generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture in the field of diagonal harmonics. In this paper we give evidence for the Delta Conjecture by proving a pair of conjectures of Wilson and Haglund-Remmel-Wilson which give equidistribution results for statistics related to inversion count and major index on objects related to ordered set partitions. Our results generalize the famous result of MacMahon that major index and inversion number share the same distribution on permutations.
We prove a compositional refinement of the Delta conjecture (rise version) of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson (2018) for $Δ_{e_{n-k-1}}'e_n$ which was stated by D'Adderio, Iraci and Vanden Wyngaerd (2020) in terms of Theta operators.
We prove a formula which generalizes both Onn's colorful determinantal formula, related to Rota's basis conjecture, and Svrtan's $n!$ formula, related to the Atiyah-Sutcliffe problem. In some cases, our formula allows us to prove some results similar in spirit to the statement of Rota's basis conjecture. We prove such a result using Svrtan's $n!$ formula, generalizing one of Svrtan's arguments to a combinatorial setting.
In this paper we define two infinite families of graphs called C-$δ$ graphs and $δ$- graph and prove that $δ$-graphs satisfy $δ$ conjecture. Also we introduce a family of C-$δ$ graphs from which we can identify $δ$ graphs as their complements. Finally we give a list of C-$δ$ graphs and the relationship with their minimum semidefinite rank.
While there has been some progress on the decomposition of Kronecker products of characters of the symmetric groups in recent times, results on the symmetric and alternating part of Kronecker squares are still scarce. Here, new results (and conjectures) are presented on this splitting of the squares that contribute to a refined understanding of the Kronecker squares. Furthermore, connections to 2-modular decomposition numbers, Catalan combinatorics, and to the Saxl conjecture are discussed which further motivate the study of these splittings.
In [Haglund, Remmel, Wilson 2018] the authors state two versions of the so called Delta conjecture, the rise version and the valley version. Of the former, they also give a more general statement in which zero labels are also allowed. In [Qiu, Wilson 2020], the corresponding generalisation of the valley version is also formulated. In [D'Adderio, Iraci, Vanden Wyngaerd 2020], the authors use a pushing algorithm to prove the generalised version of the shuffle theorem. An extension of that argument is used in [Iraci, Vanden Wyngaerd 2020] to formulate a valley version of the (generalised) Delta s…
We use a weight-preserving, sign-reversing involution to find a combinatorial expansion of $Δ_{e_k} e_n$ at $q=1$ in terms of the elementary symmetric function basis. We then use a weight-preserving bijection to prove the Delta Conjecture at $q=1$. The method of proof provides a variety of structures which can compute the inner product of $Δ_{e_k} e_n|_{q=1}$ with any symmetric function.
By finding orthogonal representation for a family of simple connected called $δ$-graphs it is possible to show that $δ$-graphs satisfy delta conjecture. An extension of the argument to graphs of the form $\overline{P_{Δ(G)+2}\sqcup G}$ where $P_{Δ(G)+2}$ is a path and $G$ is a simple connected graph it is possible to find an orthogonal representation of $\overline{P_{Δ(G)+2}\sqcup G}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{Δ(G)+1}$. As a consequence we prove delta conjecture.
We conjecture a formula for the symmetric function $\frac{[n-k]_t}{[n]_t}Δ_{h_m}Δ_{e_{n-k}}ω(p_n)$ in terms of decorated partially labelled square paths. This can be seen as a generalization of the square conjecture of Loehr and Warrington (Loehr, Warrington 2007), recently proved by Sergel (Sergel 2017) after the breakthrough of Carlsson and Mellit (Carlsson, Mellit 2018). Moreover, it extends to the square case the combinatorics of the generalized Delta conjecture of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson (Haglund, Remmel, Wilson 2015), answering one of their questions. We support our conjecture by prov…
The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts on the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n] = \mathbb{Q}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ by variable permutation. The invariant ideal $I_n$ is the ideal generated by all $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariant polynomials with vanishing constant term. The quotient $R_n = \frac{\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]}{I_n}$ is called the coinvariant algebra. The coinvariant algebra $R_n$ has received a great deal of study in algebraic and geometric combinatorics. We introduce a generalization $I_{n,k} \subseteq \mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ of the ideal $I_n$ indexed by two positive integers $…
In [The Delta Conjecture, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., to appear] Haglund, Remmel, Wilson introduce a conjecture which gives a combinatorial prediction for the result of applying a certain operator to an elementary symmetric function. This operator, defined in terms of its action on the modified Macdonald basis, has played a role in work of Garsia and Haiman on diagonal harmonics, the Hilbert scheme, and Macdonald polynomials [A. M. Garsia and M. Haiman. A remarkable $q,t$-Catalan sequence and $q$-Lagrange inversion, J. Algebraic Combin. 5 (1996), 191--244], [M. Haiman, Vanishing theorems and char…
In The Delta Conjecture (arxiv:1509.07058), Haglund, Remmel and Wilson introduced a four variable $q,t,z,w$ Catalan polynomial, so named because the specialization of this polynomial at the values $(q,t,z,w) = (1,1,0,0)$ is equal to the Catalan number $\frac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$. We prove the compositional version of this conjecture (which implies the non-compositional version) that states that the coefficient of $s_{r,1^{n-r}}$ in the expression $Δ_{h_\ell} \nabla C_α$ is equal to a weighted sum over decorated Dyck paths.
The Jacobian Conjecture has been reduced to the symmetric homogeneous case. In this paper we give an inversion formula for the symmetric case and relate it to a combinatoric structure called the Grossman-Larson Algebra. We use these tools to prove the symmetric Jacobian Conjecture for the case $F=X-H$ with $H$ homogeneous and $JH^{3}=0$. Other special results are also derived. We pose a combinatorial statement which would give a complete proof the Jacobian Conjecture.
For a $\{0,1\}$-valued matrix $M$ let $\rm{CC}(M)$ denote the deterministic communication complexity of the boolean function associated with $M$. The log-rank conjecture of Lovász and Saks [FOCS 1988] states that $\rm{CC}(M) \leq \log^c(\rm{rank}(M))$ for some absolute constant $c$ where $\rm{rank}(M)$ denotes the rank of $M$ over the field of real numbers. We show that $\rm{CC}(M)\leq c \cdot \rm{rank}(M)/\log \rm{rank}(M)$ for some absolute constant $c$, assuming a well-known conjecture from additive combinatorics known as the Polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa (PFR) conjecture. Our proof is based on …
We give bounds on the L(2,1)-labeling number of a simple graph in terms of its order and its maximum degree. We also describe an infinite class of graphs of which the elements have the highest L(2,1)-labeling numbers in terms of their maximum degrees of any known infinite class of graphs.
An $r$-segment hypergraph $H$ is a hypergraph whose edges consist of $r$ consecutive integer points on line segments in $\mathbb{R}^2$. In this paper, we bound the chromatic number $χ(H)$ and covering number $τ(H)$ of hypergraphs in this family, uncovering several interesting geometric properties in the process. We conjecture that for $r \ge 3$, the covering number $τ(H)$ is at most $(r - 1)ν(H)$, where $ν(H)$ denotes the matching number of $H$. We prove our conjecture in the case where $ν(H) = 1$, and provide improved (in fact, optimal) bounds on $τ(H)$ for $r \le 5$. We also provide sharp bo…
We introduce the family of Theta operators $Θ_f$ indexed by symmetric functions $f$ that allow us to conjecture a compositional refinement of the Delta conjecture of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson for $Δ_{e_{n-k-1}}'e_n$. We show that the $4$-variable Catalan theorem of Zabrocki is precisely the Schröder case of our compositional Delta conjecture, and we show how to relate this conjecture to the Dyck path algebra introduced by Carlsson and Mellit, extending one of their results. Again using the Theta operators, we conjecture a touching refinement of the generalized Delta conjecture for $Δ_{h_m}Δ_{…
We conjecture two combinatorial interpretations for the symmetric function $Δ_{e_k} e_n$, where $Δ_f$ is an eigenoperator for the modified Macdonald polynomials defined by Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman, and Tesler. Both interpretations can be seen as generalizations of the Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund, Haiman, Remmel, Loehr, and Ulyanov, which was proved recently by Carlsson and Mellit. We show how previous work of the third author on Tesler matrices and ordered set partitions can be used to verify several cases of our conjectures. Furthermore, we use a reciprocity identity and LLT polynomials to …
We prove the Schröder case, i.e. the case $\langle \cdot,e_{n-d}h_d \rangle$, of the conjecture of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson (Haglund et al. 2018) for $Δ_{h_m}Δ_{e_{n-k-1}}'e_n$ in terms of decorated partially labelled Dyck paths, which we call \emph{generalized Delta conjecture}. This result extends the Schröder case of the Delta conjecture proved in (D'Adderio, Vanden Wyngaerd 2017), which in turn generalized the $q,t$-Schröder of Haglund (Haglund 2004). The proof gives a recursion for these polynomials that extends the ones known for the aforementioned special cases. Also, we give another …
We discuss the combinatorics of the decorated Dyck paths appearing in the Delta conjecture framework of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson (2015) and Zabrocki (2016), by introducing two new statistics, bounce and bounce'. We then provide plethystic formulae for their q,t-enumerators, by proving in this way a decorated version of Haglund's q,t-Schroeder theorem, answering a question in Haglund, Remmel and Wilson (2015). In particular we provide both an algebraic and a combinatorial explanation of a symmetry conjectured in Haglund, Remmel and Wilson (2015) and Zabrocki (2016). Finally, we show a link be…
We study the projective objects in an exact category naturally associated to a Coxeter system. We discuss an analog of the Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture and show how it follows from a "genericity" conjecture and how the latter follows from a "Hard Lefschetz" conjecture.
We demonstrate how by using a reinforcement learning algorithm, the deep cross-entropy method, one can find explicit constructions and counterexamples to several open conjectures in extremal combinatorics and graph theory. Amongst the conjectures we refute are a question of Brualdi and Cao about maximizing permanents of pattern avoiding matrices, and several problems related to the adjacency and distance eigenvalues of graphs.
Reed conjectured that for every epsilon>0 and Delta there exists g such that the fractional total chromatic number of a graph with maximum degree Delta and girth at least g is at most Delta+1+epsilon. We prove the conjecture for Delta=3 and for even Delta>=4 in the following stronger form: For each of these values of Delta, there exists g such that the fractional total chromatic number of any graph with maximum degree Delta and girth at least g is equal to Delta+1.
Recently, Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial duality polynomial of a ribbon graph and posed a conjecture that there is no orientable ribbon graph whose partial duality polynomial has only one non-constant term. We found an infinite family of counterexamples for the conjecture and showed that essentially these are the only counterexamples. This is also obtained independently by Chumutov and Vignes-Tourneret and they posed a problem: it would be interesting to know whether the partial duality polynomial and the related conjectures would make sence for general delta-matroids. In thi…
In \cite{HRW15}, Haglund, Remmel, Wilson state a conjecture which predicts a purely combinatorial way of obtaining the symmetric function $Δ_{e_k}e_n$. It is called the Delta Conjecture. It was recently proved in \cite{GHRY} that the Delta Conjecture is true when either $q=0$ or $t=0$. In this paper we complete a work initiated by Remmel whose initial aim was to explore the symmetric function $Δ_{s_ν} e_n$ by the same methods developed in \cite{GHRY}. Our first need here is a method for constructing a symmetric function that may be viewed as a "combinatorial side" for the symmetric function $Δ…
We discuss the combinatorics of decorated Dyck paths and decorated parallelogram polyominoes, extending to the decorated case the main results of both [Haglund 2004] and [Aval et al. 2014]. This settles in particular the cases $\langle\cdot,e_{n-d}h_d\rangle$ and $\langle\cdot,h_{n-d}h_d\rangle$ of the Delta conjecture of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson (2018). Along the way, we introduce some new statistics, formulate some new conjectures, prove some new identities of symmetric functions, and answer a few open problems in the literature (e.g. from [Haglund et al. 2018], [Zabrocki 2016], [Aval et a…
The systematic study of inversion sequences avoiding triples of relations was initiated by Martinez and Savage. For a triple $(ρ_1,ρ_2,ρ_3)\in\{<,>,\leq,\geq,=,\neq,-\}^3$, they introduced $\I_n(ρ_1,ρ_2,ρ_3)$ as the set of inversion sequences $e=e_1e_2\cdots e_n$ of length $n$ such that there are no indices $1\leq i<j<k\leq n$ with $e_i ρ_1 e_j$, $e_j ρ_2 e_k$ and $e_i ρ_3 e_k$. To solve a conjecture of Martinez and Savage, Lin constructed a bijection between $\I_n(\geq,\neq,>)$ and $\I_n(>,\neq,\geq)$ that preserves the distinct entries and further posed a symmetry conjecture of ascents on th…
We introduce area, bounce and dinv statistics on decorated parallelogram polyominoes, and prove that some of their q,t-enumerators match $\langle Δ_{h_m} e_{n+1}, s_{k+1,1^{n-k}} \rangle$, extending in this way the work in (Aval et al. 2014). Also, we provide a bijective connection between decorated parallelogram polyominoes and decorated labelled Dyck paths, which allows us to prove the combinatorial interpretation of the coefficient $\langleΔ_{e_{m+n-k-1}}'e_{m+n}, h_m h_n \rangle$ predicted by the Delta conjecture in (Haglund et al. 2015). Finally, we define a statistic pmaj on partially la…
A paper of the first author and Zilke proposed seven combinatorial problems around formulas for the characteristic polynomial and the exponents of an isolated quasihomogeneous singularity. The most important of them was a conjecture on the characteristic polynomial. Here the conjecture is proved, and some of the other problems are solved, too. In the cases where also an old conjecture of Orlik on the integral monodromy holds, this has implications on the automorphism group of the Milnor lattice. The combinatorics used in the proof of the conjecture consists of tuples of orders on sets $\{0,1,.…
We introduce area, bounce and dinv statistics on decorated parallelogram polyominoes, and prove that some of their q,t-enumerators match $\langle Δ_{h_m} e_{n+1},s_{k+1,1^{n-k}}\rangle$, extending in this way the work in (Aval et al. 2014). Also, we provide a bijective connection between decorated parallelogram polyominoes and decorated labelled Dyck paths, which allows us to prove the combinatorial interpretation of the coefficient $\langle Δ_{e_{m+n-k-1}}'e_{m+n},h_m h_n\rangle$ predicted by the Delta conjecture in (Haglund et al. 2015). Finally, we define a statistic pmaj on partially label…
Conrey, Farmer, Keating, Rubinstein and Snaith have given a recipe that conjecturally produces, among others, the full moment polynomial for the Riemann zeta function. The leading term of this polynomial is given as a product of a factor explained by arithmetic and a factor explained by combinatorics (or, alternatively, random matrices). We explain how the lower order terms arise, and clarify the dependency of each factor on the exponent $k$ that is considered. We use extensively the theory of symmetric functions and representations of symmetric groups, ideas of Lascoux on manipulations of alp…
A topological version of a longstanding conjecture of H. Hopf, originally proposed by W. Thurston, states that the sign of the Euler characteristic of a closed aspherical manifold of dimension $d=2m$ depends only on the parity of $m$. Gromov defined several hyperbolization functors which produce an aspherical manifold from a given simplicial or cubical manifold. We investigate the combinatorics of several of these hyperbolizations and verify the Euler Characteristic Sign Conjecture for each of them. In addition, we explore further combinatorial properties of these hyperbolizations as they rela…
The reduced Kronecker coefficients are particular instances of Kronecker coefficients that contain enough information to recover them. In this notes we compute the generating function of a family of reduced Kronecker coefficients. We also gives its connection to the plane partitions, which allows us to check that this family satisfies the saturation conjecture for reduced Kronecker coefficients, and that they are weakly increasing. Thanks to its generating function we can describe our family by a quasipolynomial, specifying its degree and period.
The Voronoi conjecture on parallelohedra claims that for every convex polytope $P$ that tiles Euclidean $d$-dimensional space with translations there exists a $d$-dimensional lattice such that $P$ and the Voronoi polytope of this lattice are affinely equivalent. The Voronoi conjecture is still open for the general case but it is known that some combinatorial restriction for the face structure of $P$ ensure that the Voronoi conjecture holds for $P$. In this paper we prove that if $P$ is the Voronoi polytope of one of the dual root lattices $\mathsf{D}_d^*$, $\mathsf{E}_6^*$, $\mathsf{E}_7^*$ or…
In a recent preprint, Carlsson and Oblomkov (2018) obtain a long sought after monomial basis for the ring $\operatorname{DR}_n$ of diagonal coinvariants. Their basis is closely related to the "schedules" formula for the Hilbert series of $\operatorname{DR}_n$ which was conjectured by the first author and Loehr (2005) and first proved by Carlsson and Mellit (2018), as a consequence of their proof of the famous Shuffle Conjecture. In this article we obtain a schedules formula for the combinatorial side of the Delta Conjecture, a conjecture introduced by the first author, Remmel and Wilson (2018)…
We prove that the number of even parts and the number of times that parts are repeated have the same distribution over integer partitions with a fixed perimeter. This refines Straub's analog of Euler's Odd-Distinct partition theorem. We generalize the two concerned statistics to these of the part-difference less than $d$ and the parts not congruent to $1$ modulo $d+1$ and prove a distribution inequality, that has a similar flavor as Alder's ex-conjecture, over partitions with a prescribed perimeter. Both of our results are proved analytically and combinatorially.
The Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson predicts the monomial expansion of the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$, where $k \leq n$ are positive integers and $Δ'_{e_{k-1}}$ is a Macdonald eigenoperator. When $k = n$, the specialization $Δ'_{e_{n-1}} e_n|_{t = 0}$ is the Frobenius image of the graded $S_n$-module afforded by the cohomology ring of the {\em flag variety} consisting of complete flags in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We define and study a variety $X_{n,k}$ which carries an action of $S_n$ whose cohomology ring $H^{\bullet}(X_{n,k})$ has Frobenius image given by $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n|…
According to the Göttsche conjecture (now a theorem), the degree N^{d, delta} of the Severi variety of plane curves of degree d with delta nodes is given by a polynomial in d, provided d is large enough. These "node polynomials" N_delta(d) were determined by Vainsencher and Kleiman-Piene for delta <= 6 and delta <= 8, respectively. Building on ideas of Fomin and Mikhalkin, we develop an explicit algorithm for computing all node polynomials, and use it to compute N_delta(d) for delta <= 14. Furthermore, we improve the threshold of polynomiality and verify Göttsche's conjecture on the optimal th…
For any Schur function $s_ν$, the associated {\em delta operator} $Δ'_{s_ν}$ is a linear operator on the ring of symmetric functions which has the modified Macdonald polynomials as an eigenbasis. When $ν= (1^{n-1})$ is a column of length $n-1$, the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{n-1}} e_n$ appears in the Shuffle Theorem of Carlsson-Mellit. More generally, when $ν= (1^{k-1})$ is any column the polynomial $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$ is the symmetric function side of the Delta Conjecture of Haglund-Remmel-Wilson. We give an expansion of $ωΔ'_{s_ν} e_n$ at $t = 0$ in the dual Hall-Littlewood basis for any part…
We prove the Extended Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson, a combinatorial formula for $Δ_{h_l}Δ' _{e_k} e_{n}$, where $Δ' _{e_k}$ and $Δ_{h_l}$ are Macdonald eigenoperators and $e_n$ is an elementary symmetric function. We actually prove a stronger identity of infinite series of $GL_m$ characters expressed in terms of LLT series. This is achieved through new results in the theory of the Schiffmann algebra and its action on the algebra of symmetric functions.
