Observations suggest that the amount of galactic dust in the Universe decreased by a factor $\sim 2-3$ during the last $\sim 8$ Gyr. However, cosmological models of galaxy evolution usually struggle to explain this decrease. Here we use the semi-analytic model (SAM) L-Galaxies2020 to show that this drop may be reproduced assuming standard prescriptions for dust production and evolution. We extend the SAM with i) a state-of-the-art dust model which adopts the two-size approximation and ii) a new disc instability criterion which triggers bulge and central black hole growth. The model reproduces some fundamental properties of the local galaxy population, such as the fraction of spheroid-dominated galaxies and some scaling relations involving dust. Moreover, the model predicts a galactic dust drop from $z \sim 1 \rightarrow 0$, which becomes closer to the observed one when adopting the new treatment of disc instabilities. This result is related to the newly implemented super-massive black hole growth during disc instabilities, which enhances the quenching of massive galaxies. Consequently, these objects feature a lower gas and dust content. We provide a census of the contribution of all the processes affecting the galactic dust content. Accretion is the dominant dust mass growth process. Destruction by supernovae, astration and ejection by winds have all a non-negligible role in decreasing the overall dust content in galaxies below $z \sim 1$. We also discuss predictions concerning extra-galactic dust, confirming that a sputtering efficiency lower than the canonical one is required to match the few available observations.

The recent discovery of high redshift dusty galaxies implies a rapid dust enrichment of their interstellar medium (ISM). To interpret these observations, we run a cosmological simulation in a 30$h^{-1}$ cMpc/size volume down to $z \approx 4$. We use the hydrodynamical code dustyGadget, which accounts for the production of dust by stellar populations and its evolution in the ISM. We find that the cosmic dust density parameter ($Ω_{\rm d}$) is mainly driven by stellar dust at $z \gtrsim 10$, so that mass- and metallicity-dependent yields are required to assess the dust content in the first galax…
Recent measurements of Galactic polarized dust emission have found a nonzero $TB$ signal, a correlation between the total intensity and the $B$-mode polarization component. We present evidence that this parity-odd signal is driven by the relative geometry of the magnetic field and the filamentary interstellar medium in projection. Using neutral hydrogen morphology and Planck polarization data, we find that the angle between intensity structures and the plane-of-sky magnetic field orientation is predictive of the signs of Galactic $TB$ and $EB$. Our results suggest that magnetically misaligned …
We present azimuthally averaged metal abundance profiles from a full, comprehensive, and conservative re-analysis of the deep ($\sim$800 ks total net exposure) \textit{Chandra}/ACIS-S observation of the Centaurus cluster core (NGC\,4696). After carefully checking various sources of systematic uncertainties, including the choice of the spectral deprojection method, assumptions about the temperature structure of the gas, and uncertainties in the continuum modeling, we confirm the existence of a central drop in the abundances of the `reactive' elements Fe, Si, S, Mg, and Ca, within $r\lesssim$10 …
We apply BayeSN, our new hierarchical Bayesian model for the SEDs of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), to analyse the $griz$ light curves of 157 nearby SNe Ia ($0.015<z<0.08$) from the public Foundation DR1 dataset. We train a new version of BayeSN, continuous from 0.35--0.95 $μ$m, which we use to model the properties of SNe Ia in the rest-frame $z$-band, study the properties of dust in their host galaxies, and construct a Hubble diagram of SN Ia distances determined from full $griz$ light curves. Our $griz$ Hubble diagram has a low total RMS of 0.13 mag using BayeSN, compared to 0.16 mag using SAL…
Dust is an essential ingredient of galaxies, determining the physical and chemical conditions in the interstellar medium. Several complementary observational evidences indicate that the cosmic dust mass density significantly drops from redshift $z=1$ to $z=0$. Clearly, and for the first time during cosmic evolution, dust must be destroyed more rapidly than it is formed. By considering the dust production/destruction processes acting in this cosmic time lapse, we find that the drop can be explained if dust is mainly destroyed by astration (49\% contribution in the fiducial case) and supernova s…
We aim at constraining the dust mass in high-redshift ($z\gtrsim 5$) galaxies using the upper limits obtained by ALMA in combination with the rest-frame UV--optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs). For SED fitting, because of degeneracy between dust extinction and stellar age, we focus on two extremes: continuous star formation (Model A) and instantaneous star formation (Model B). We apply these models to Himiko (as a representative UV-bright object) and a composite SED of $z>5$ Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). For Himiko, Model A requires a significant dust extinction, which leads to a high …
We explore the possibility of detecting the first galaxies with the next generation of space-based far infrared (FIR) telescopes by applying an analytical model of primordial dust emission. Our results indicate that FIR/sub-mm sources at $z \gtrsim 7$ will experience a strong negative K-correction. Systems of a given virial mass would exhibit larger dust luminosities at higher $z$, as a consequence of the increase in dust temperature driven by the higher temperature floor set by the cosmic microwave background. In addition, high-$z$ systems are more concentrated, which enhances the heating eff…
We post-process galaxies in the IllustrisTNG simulations with SKIRT radiative transfer calculations to make predictions for the rest-frame near-infrared (NIR) and far-infrared (FIR) properties of galaxies at $z\geq 4$. The rest-frame $K$- and $z$-band galaxy luminosity functions from TNG are overall consistent with observations, despite a $\sim 0.5\,\mathrm{dex}$ underprediction at $z=4$ for $M_{\rm K}\lesssim -25$ and $M_{\rm z}\lesssim -24$. Predictions for the JWST MIRI observed galaxy luminosity functions and number counts are given. Based on theoretical estimations, we show that the next-…
We present predictions for high redshift ($z=2-10$) galaxy populations based on the IllustrisTNG simulation suite and a full Monte Carlo dust radiative transfer post-processing. Specifically, we discuss the ${\rm H}_α$ and ${\rm H}_β$ + $[\rm O \,III]$ luminosity functions up to $z=8$. The predicted ${\rm H}_β$ + $[\rm O \,III]$ luminosity functions are consistent with present observations at $z\lesssim 3$ with $\lesssim 0.1\,{\rm dex}$ differences in luminosities. However, the predicted ${\rm H}_α$ luminosity function is $\sim 0.3\,{\rm dex}$ dimmer than the observed one at $z\simeq 2$. Furth…
We present the first characterisation of the average dust attenuation curve at $z\sim1.3$ by combining rest-frame ultraviolet through near-IR photometry with Balmer decrement ($\mathrm{H}α$/$\mathrm{H}β$) constraints for $\sim$900 galaxies with $8\lesssim\log (M_\star /M_\odot)<10.2$ at $0.75<z<1.5$ in the HST WFC3 IR Spectroscopic Parallel (WISP) and 3D-HST grism surveys. Using galaxies in SDSS, we establish that the ($\mathrm{H}α$+[NII])/[OIII] line ratio and stellar mass are good proxies for the Balmer decrement in low-spectral resolution grism data when only upper-limits on $\mathrm{H}β$ a…
Shaping the dust mass - star-formation rate relation
Dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs) with extreme infrared luminosities may represent a key phase in the co-evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes. We select 12 DOGs at $0.3\lesssim z\lesssim1.0$ with broad Mg II or H$β$ emission lines and investigate their X-ray properties utilizing snapshot observations ($\sim3~\mathrm{ks}$ per source) with Chandra. By assuming that the broad lines are broadened due to virial motions of broad-line regions, we find that our sources generally have high Eddington ratios ($λ_\mathrm{Edd}$). Our sources generally have moderate intrinsic X-ray luminosities ($…
We investigate the radio-far infrared (FIR) correlation for a sample of $28$ bright high-redshift ($1 \lesssim z \lesssim 4$) star-forming galaxies selected in the FIR from the Herschel-ATLAS fields as candidates to be strongly gravitationally lensed. The radio information comes either from high sensitivity dedicated ATCA observations at $2.1$ GHz or from cross-matches with the FIRST survey at $1.4$ GHz. By taking advantage of source brightness possibly enhanced by lensing magnification, we identify a weak evolution with redshift out to $z\lesssim 4$ of the FIR-to-radio luminosity ratio $q_{\r…
We present a panchromatic study of 11 (sub-)millimetre selected DSFGs with spectroscopically confirmed redshift ($1.5< z_{\rm spec}<3$) in the GOODS-S field, with the aim of constraining their astrophysical properties (e.g., age, stellar mass, dust and gas content) and characterizing their role in the context of galaxy evolution. The multi-wavelength coverage of GOODS-S, from X-rays to radio band, allow us to model galaxy SED by using CIGALE with a novel approach, based on a physical motivated modelling of stellar light attenuation by dust. Median stellar mass ($\simeq6.5\times10^{10}$ M$_\odo…
Evidence for dust around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the early Universe is strongly suggested by recent observations. However, the accretion mechanism of SMBHs in dusty gas is not well understood yet. We investigate the growth of intermediate-mass black-holes (IMBHs) of $\sim 10^{5}~M_{\odot}$ in dusty clouds by using one-dimensional radiative-hydrodynamics simulations. We find that the accretion of dusty gas onto IMBHs proceeds gently with small fluctuations of the accretion rate, whereas that of pristine gas causes more violent periodic bursts. At dust-to-gas mass ratios similar to t…
There is a large consensus that gas in high-$z$ galaxies is highly turbulent, because of a combination of stellar feedback processes and gravitational instabilities driven by mergers and gas accretion. In this paper, we present the analysis of a sample of five Dusty Star Forming Galaxies (DSFGs) at $4 \lesssim z\lesssim 5$. Taking advantage of the magnifying power of strong gravitational lensing, we quantified their kinematic and dynamical properties from ALMA observations of their [CII] emission line. We combined the dynamical measurements obtained for these galaxies with those obtained from …
We apply novel survival analysis techniques to investigate the relationship between a number of the properties of galaxies and their atomic ($M_\mathrm{HI}$) and molecular ($M_{\mathrm{H_2}}$) gas mass, with the aim of devising efficient, effective empirical estimators of the cold gas content in galaxies that can be applied to large optical galaxy surveys. We find that dust attenuation, {\AV}, of both the continuum and nebular emission, shows significant partial correlations with $M_{\mathrm{H_2}}$, after controlling for the effect of star formation rate (SFR). The partial correlation between …
We calculate the evolution of a star-forming cloud core using a three-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamics simulation, treating dust grains as Lagrangian particles, to investigate the dust motion in the early star formation stage. We prepare six different-sized set of dust particles in the range $a_{\rm d}=0.01$--$1000\,μ$m, where $a_{\rm d}$ is the dust grain size. In a gravitationally collapsing cloud, a circumstellar disk forms around a protostar and drives a protostellar outflow. Almost all the small dust grains ($a_{\rm d} \lesssim 10$--$100\,μ$m) initially distributed in the region…

The size of the dust torus in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and their high-luminosity counterparts, quasars, can be inferred from the time delay between UV/optical accretion disk continuum variability and the response in the mid-infrared (MIR) torus emission. This dust reverberation mapping (RM) technique has been successfully applied to $\sim 70$ $z\lesssim 0.3$ AGN and quasars. Here we present first results of our dust RM program for distant quasars covered in the SDSS Stripe 82 region combining $\sim 20$-yr ground-based optical light curves with 10-yr MIR light curves from the WISE satellite…
Cosmic dust is an essential component shaping both the evolution of galaxies and their observational signatures. How quickly dust builds up in the early Universe remains an open question that requires deep observations at (sub-)millimeter wavelengths to resolve. Here we use Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations of 45 galaxies from the Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) and its pilot programs, designed to target [CII] and dust emission in UV-selected galaxies at $z\sim7$, to investigate the dust content of high-redshift galaxies through a stacking analysis. We find that…
We study the effects of the integrated galactic initial mass function (IGIMF) and dust evolution on the abundance patterns of high redshift starburst galaxies. In our chemical models, the rapid collapse of gas clouds triggers an intense and rapid star formation episode, which lasts until the onset of a galactic wind, powered by the thermal energy injected by stellar winds and supernova explosions. Our models follow the evolution of several chemical elements (C, N, $α$-elements and Fe) both in the gas and dust phases. %The most recent stellar yield and dust prescriptions are adopted. We test di…
In a previous work, Hoang and Tram discovered a new mechanism for destruction of nanoparticles due to suprathermal rotation of grains in stationary C-shocks, which is termed rotational disruption. In this paper, we extend our previous study for non-stationary shocks driven by outflows and young supernovae remnants that have dynamical ages shorter than the time required to establish a stationary C-shock, which is composed of a C-shock and a J-shock tail (referred as CJ-shock). For the C-shock component, we find that smallest nanoparticles (size $\lesssim 1$ nm) of weak materials (i.e., tensile …
To investigate the evolution of dust in a cosmological volume, we perform hydrodynamic simulations, in which the enrichment of metals and dust is treated self-consistently with star formation and stellar feedback. We consider dust evolution driven by dust production in stellar ejecta, dust destruction by sputtering, grain growth by accretion and coagulation, and grain disruption by shattering, and treat small and large grains separately to trace the grain size distribution. After confirming that our model nicely reproduces the observed relation between dust-to-gas ratio and metallicity for nea…
Recent observations have uncovered a correlation between the accretion rates (measured from the UV continuum excess) of protoplanetary discs and their masses inferred from observations of the sub-mm continuum. While viscous evolution models predict such a correlation, the predicted values are in tension with data obtained from the Lupus and Upper Scorpius star forming regions; for example, they underpredict the scatter in accretion rates, particularly in older regions. Here we argue that since the sub-mm observations trace the discs' dust, by explicitly modelling the dust grain growth, evoluti…
Scaling laws of dust, HI gas and metal mass with stellar mass, specific star formation rate and metallicity are crucial to our understanding of the buildup of galaxies through their enrichment with metals and dust. In this work, we analyse how the dust and metal content varies with specific gas mass ($M_{\text{HI}}$/$M_{\star}$) across a diverse sample of 423 nearby galaxies. The observed trends are interpreted with a set of Dust and Element evolUtion modelS (DEUS) - incluidng stellar dust production, grain growth, and dust destruction - within a Bayesian framework to enable a rigorous search …
A central drop of ICM Fe abundance has been observed in several cool-core clusters. It has been proposed that this abundance drop may be due, at least partially, to the depletion of Fe into dust grains in the central, high-density regions. According to this scenario, noble gas elements such as Ar and Ne are not expected to be depleted into dust, and therefore should not show any drop, but follow the general increase of metal abundance toward the center. In this work, we test this scenario by measuring with {\sl Chandra} data the radial profiles of Ar and Ne in a sample of 12 groups and cluster…
We present numerical computations and analysis of atomic to molecular (HI-to-H$_2$) transitions in cool ($\sim$100 K) low-metallicity dust-free (primordial) gas, in which molecule formation occurs via cosmic-ray driven negative ion chemistry, and removal is by a combination of far-UV photodissociation and cosmic-ray ionization and dissociation. For any gas temperature, the behavior depends on the ratio of the Lyman-Werner (LW) band FUV intensity to gas density, $I_{\rm LW}/n$, and the ratio of the cosmic-ray ionization rate to the gas density, $ζ/n$. We present sets of HI-to-H$_2$ abundance pr…
Growing observational evidence confirms the existence of massive black holes ($M_{BH} \sim 10^9 M_{\odot}$), accreting at rates close to the Eddington limit, at very high redshifts ($z \gtrsim 6-7$) in the early Universe. Recent observations indicate that the host galaxies of the first quasars are chemically evolved systems, containing unexpectedly large amounts of dust. Such a combination of high luminosities and large dust content should form favourable physical conditions for radiative dusty feedback. We explore the impact of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback, driven by radiation p…
Early observations with JWST indicate an over-abundance of bright galaxies at redshifts $z \gtrsim 10$ relative to Hubble-calibrated model predictions. More puzzling still is the apparent lack of evolution in the abundance of such objects between $z \sim 9$ and the highest redshifts yet probed, $z \sim 13$-$17$. In this study, we first show that, despite a poor match with JWST LFs, semi-empirical models calibrated to UVLFs and colours at $4 \lesssim z \lesssim 8$ are largely consistent with constraints on the properties of individual JWST galaxies, including their stellar masses, ages, and res…
In this work we use stacking analysis in \emph{Herschel} PACS to study the accuracy of several dust-correction factors typically employed to estimate total star-formation rate (SFR) of high-redshift star-forming (SF) galaxies. We also analyze what stacking suggests about the relation between SFR and stellar mass and the redshift evolution of the specific SFR (${\rm sSFR} = {\rm SFR} / {\rm M_*}$). We find that the dust properties of massive SF galaxies evolve with redshift, being galaxies at $z \sim 2-3$ more attenuated than at $z \sim 1$ for a given UV continuum slope and stellar mass. As a c…
In this analysis we illustrate how the relatively new emission mechanism known as spinning dust can be used to characterize dust grains in the interstellar medium. We demonstrate this by using spinning dust emission observations to constrain the abundance of very small dust grains (a $\lesssim$ 10nm) in a sample of Galactic cold cores. Using the physical properties of the cores in our sample as inputs to a spinning dust model, we predict the expected level of emission at a wavelength of 1cm for four different very small dust grain abundances, which we constrain by comparing to 1cm CARMA observ…
A deep, wide-field, near-infrared imaging survey was used to construct an extinction map of the southeastern part of the California Molecular Cloud (CMC) with $\sim$ 0.5 arc min resolution. The same region was also surveyed in the $^{12}$CO(2-1), $^{13}$CO(2-1), C$^{18}$O(2-1) emission lines at the same angular resolution. Strong spatial variations in the abundances of $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O were found to be correlated with variations in gas temperature, consistent with temperature dependent CO depletion/desorption on dust grains. The $^{13}$CO to C$^{18}$O abundance ratio was found to increa…
We use a suite of cosmological zoom galaxy formation simulations and dust radiative transfer calculations to explore the use of the monochromatic $850~μm$ luminosity (L$_{\rm ν,850}$) as a molecular gas mass (M$_{\rm mol}$) estimator in galaxies between $0 < z < 9.5$ for a broad range of masses. For our fiducial simulations, where we assume the dust mass is linearly related to the metal mass, we find that empirical L$_{\rm ν,850}$-M$_{\rm mol}$ calibrations accurately recover the molecular gas mass of our model galaxies, and that the L$_{\rm ν,850}$-dependent calibration is preferred. We argue…

We model dust evolution in Milky Way-like galaxies by post-processing the IllustrisTNG cosmological hydrodynamical simulations in order to predict dust-to-gas ratios and grain size distributions. We treat grain-size-dependent dust growth and destruction processes using a 64-bin discrete grain size evolution model without spatially resolving each galaxy. Our model broadly reproduces the observed dust--metallicity scaling relation in nearby galaxies. The grain size distribution is dominated by large grains at $z\gtrsim 3$ and the small-grain abundance rapidly increases by shattering and accretio…
Recent Planck observations of dust polarization in the Galaxy have revealed that the power in $E$ mode is twice that in $B$ mode. Caldwell et. al. have formulated a theoretical model in the context of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence and found it problematic to account for this result. In particular, they concluded that there is a very narrow range of theoretical parameters that could account for the observation. This poses a problem of whether the accepted description of MHD turbulence can apply to the interstellar medium. We revisit the problem and demonstrate that MHD turbulence corresp…

The dust properties in high-redshift galaxies provide clues to the origin of dust in the Universe. Although dust has been detected in galaxies at redshift $z>7$, it is difficult to constrain the dominant dust sources only from the total dust amount. Thus, we calculate the evolution of grain size distribution, expecting that different dust sources predict different grain size distributions. Using the star formation time-scale and the total baryonic mass constrained by the data in the literature, we calculate the evolution of grain size distribution. To explain the total dust masses in ALMA-dete…
Previous studies suggest that compact young early-type galaxies (ETGs) were formed by recent mergers. However, it has not yet been revealed whether tidal features that are direct evidence of recent mergers are detected frequently around compact young ETGs. Here, we investigate how the fraction of ETGs having tidal features ($f_{T}$) depends on age and internal structure (compactness, color gradient, and dust lanes) of ETGs, using 650 ETGs with $M_r\le-19.5$ in $0.015\le z\le0.055$ that are in deep coadded images of the Stripe 82 region of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that tidal featur…
Dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) detected at $z > 4$ provide important examples of the first generations of massive galaxies. However, few examples with spectroscopic confirmation are currently known, with Hershel struggling to detect significant numbers of $z > 6$ DSFGs. NGP6_D1 is a bright 850 $μm$ source (12.3 $\pm$ 2.5 mJy) with no counterparts at shorter wavelengths (a SPIRE dropout). Interferometric observations confirm it is a single source, with no evidence for any optical or NIR emission, or nearby likely foreground lensing sources. No $>3σ$ detected lines are seen in both LMT RSR …
We use a sample of 706 galaxies, selected as [OII]$λ$3727 ([OII]) emitters in the Survey for High-$z$ Absorption Red and Dead Sources (SHARDS) on the CANDELS/GOODS-N field, to study the differential attenuation of the nebular emission with respect to the stellar continuum. The sample includes only galaxies with a counterpart in the infrared and $\mathrm{log}_{10}(M_{*}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot})$ $>$ 9, over the redshift interval 0.3 $\lesssim$ $z$ $\lesssim$ 1.5. Our methodology consists in the comparison of the star formation rates inferred from [OII] and H$α$ emission lines with a robust quantific…
Using cosmological volume simulations and a custom built sub-grid model for Pop~III star formation, we examine the baseline dust extinction in the first galaxies due to Pop~III metal enrichment in the first billion years of cosmic history. We find that while the most enriched, high-density lines of sight in primordial galaxies can experience a measurable amount of extinction from Pop~III dust ($E(B-V)_{\rm max}=0.07,\ A_{\rm V,max}\approx0.28$), the average extinction is very low with $\left< E(B-V) \right> \lesssim 10^{-3}$. We derive a power-law relationship between dark matter halo mass and…
We present a study of the trade-off between depth and resolution using a large number of U-band imaging observations in the GOODS-North field (Giavalisco et al. 2004) from the Large Binocular Camera (LBC) on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). Having acquired over 30 hours of data (315 images with 5-6 mins exposures), we generated multiple image mosaics, starting with the best atmospheric seeing images (FWHM $\lesssim$0.8"), which constitute $\sim$10% of the total data set. For subsequent mosaics, we added in data with larger seeing values until the final, deepest mosaic included all images w…
To understand the origin of nuclear ($\lesssim$ 100 pc) millimeter-wave (mm-wave) continuum emission in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we systematically analyzed sub-arcsec resolution Band-6 (211-275 GHz) ALMA data of 98 nearby AGNs ($z <$ 0.05) from the 70-month Swift/BAT catalog. The sample, almost unbiased for obscured systems, provides the largest number of AGNs to date with high mm-wave spatial resolution sampling ($\sim$ 1-200 pc), and spans broad ranges of 14-150 keV luminosity {$40 < \log[L_{\rm 14-150}/({\rm erg\,s^{-1}})] < 45$}, black hole mass [$5 < \log(M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot) < 10$],…
We investigate physical reasons for high dust temperatures ($T_\mathrm{dust}\gtrsim 40$ K) observed in some high-redshift ($z>5$) galaxies using analytic models. We consider two models that can be treated analytically: the radiative transfer (RT) model, {where a broad distribution of values for $T_\mathrm{dust}$ is considered}, and the one-tempearture (one-$T$) model, which assumes {uniform $T_\mathrm{dust}$}. These two extremes {serve to bracket the most realistic scenario}. We adopt the Kennicutt--Schmidt (KS) law to relate stellar radiation field to gas surface density, and vary the dust-to…
