Dust-obscured quasars have been suspected as the intermediate stage galaxies between merger-driven star-forming galaxies and unobscured quasars. This merger-driven galaxy evolution scenario suggests that dust-obscured quasars exhibit higher Eddington ratios ($λ_{\rm Edd}$) than those of unobscured quasars. However, their high dust obscuration poses challenges to accurately measuring their $λ_{\rm Edd}$ using commonly employed bolometric luminosity ($L_{\rm bol}$) and black hole (BH) mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) estimators based on the ultraviolet (UV) or optical luminosity. Recently, Kim et al. (2023) established new estimators for $L_{\rm bol}$ and $M_{\rm BH}$ based on mid-infrared (MIR) continuum luminosity ($L_{\rm MIR}$), which are less affected by dust obscuration. These estimators enable the study of a large number of dust-obscured quasars across a wide redshift range. In this study, we measure the $λ_{\rm Edd}$ values of 30 dust-obscured quasars at $z \lesssim 1$, the largest sample size to date, using the $L_{\rm MIR}$-based $L_{\rm bol}$ and $M_{\rm BH}$ estimators. Our findings reveal that dust-obscured quasars exhibit significantly higher $λ_{\rm Edd}$ values compared to unobscured quasars. Moreover, we confirm that the enhanced $λ_{\rm Edd}$ values of dust-obscured quasars maintain consistency across the redshift span of 0 to 1. Our results strongly support the picture that dust-obscured quasars are in the earlier stage than unobscured quasars in the merger-driven galaxy evolutionary track.
JWST Spectroscopic View of a Rapidly Growing Dust-obscured Quasar at $z \sim 4$: Effect of Dust Extinction Correction on Black Hole Mass and Eddington Ratio Estimation
Hot, Dust-Obscured Galaxies, or "Hot DOGs", are a rare, dusty, hyperluminous galaxy population discovered by the WISE mission. Predominantly at redshifts 2-3, they include the most luminous known galaxies in the universe. Their high luminosities likely come from accretion onto highly obscured super massive black holes (SMBHs). We have conducted a pilot survey to measure the SMBH masses of five z~2 Hot DOGs via broad H_alpha emission lines, using Keck/MOSFIRE and Gemini/FLAMINGOS-2. We detect broad H_alpha emission in all five Hot DOGs. We find substantial corresponding SMBH masses for these Ho…
Clustering measurements of obscured and unobscured quasars show that obscured quasars reside in more massive dark matter halos than their unobscured counterparts. These results are inconsistent with simple unified (torus) scenarios, but might be explained by models in which the distribution of obscuring material depends on Eddington ratio or galaxy stellar mass. We test these possibilities by constructing simple physical models to compare to observed AGN populations. We find that previously observed relationships between obscuration and Eddington ratio or stellar mass are not sufficient reprod…

The absence of high Eddington ratio, obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in local ($z\lesssim0.1$) samples of moderate luminosity AGN has generally been explained to result from radiation pressure on the dusty gas governing the level of nuclear ($\lesssim10$pc) obscuration. However, very high accretion rates are routinely reported among obscured quasars at higher luminosities, and may require a different feedback mechanism. We compile constraints on obscuration and Eddington ratio for samples of X-ray, optical, infrared, and submm selected AGN at quasar luminosities. Whereas moderate luminos…

We constrain the intrinsic Eddington ratio (\lamEdd ) distribution function for local AGN in bins of low and high obscuration (log NH <= 22 and 22 < log NH < 25), using the Swift-BAT 70-month/BASS DR2 survey. We interpret the fraction of obscured AGN in terms of circum-nuclear geometry and temporal evolution. Specifically, at low Eddington ratios (log lamEdd < -2), obscured AGN outnumber unobscured ones by a factor of ~4, reflecting the covering factor of the circum-nuclear material (0.8, or a torus opening angle of ~ 34 degrees). At high Eddington ratios (\log lamEdd > -1), the trend is rever…
We quantify the star formation (SF) in the inner cores ($\mathcal{R}$/$R_{200}$$\leq$0.3) of 24 massive galaxy clusters at 0.2$\lesssim$$z$$\lesssim$0.9 observed by the $Herschel$ Lensing Survey and the Cluster Lensing and Supernova survey with $Hubble$. These programmes, covering the rest-frame ultraviolet to far-infrared regimes, allow us to accurately characterize stellar mass-limited ($\mathcal{M}_{*}$$>$$10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$) samples of star-forming cluster members (not)-detected in the mid- and/or far-infrared. We release the catalogues with the photometry, photometric redshifts, and phy…
Dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs) with extreme infrared luminosities may represent a key phase in the co-evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes. We select 12 DOGs at $0.3\lesssim z\lesssim1.0$ with broad Mg II or H$β$ emission lines and investigate their X-ray properties utilizing snapshot observations ($\sim3~\mathrm{ks}$ per source) with Chandra. By assuming that the broad lines are broadened due to virial motions of broad-line regions, we find that our sources generally have high Eddington ratios ($λ_\mathrm{Edd}$). Our sources generally have moderate intrinsic X-ray luminosities ($…
We construct a new sample of 32 obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected from the Second XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue to investigate their multiwavelength properties in relation to the "scattering fraction", the ratio of the soft X-ray flux to the absorption-corrected direct emission. The sample covers a broad range of the scattering fraction (0.1%-10%). A quarter of the 32 AGNs have a very low scattering fraction (smaller than 0.5%), which suggests that they are buried in a geometrically thick torus with a very small opening angle. We investigate correlations between the s…
Cosmic dust is an essential component shaping both the evolution of galaxies and their observational signatures. How quickly dust builds up in the early Universe remains an open question that requires deep observations at (sub-)millimeter wavelengths to resolve. Here we use Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations of 45 galaxies from the Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) and its pilot programs, designed to target [CII] and dust emission in UV-selected galaxies at $z\sim7$, to investigate the dust content of high-redshift galaxies through a stacking analysis. We find that…
Evidence for dust around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the early Universe is strongly suggested by recent observations. However, the accretion mechanism of SMBHs in dusty gas is not well understood yet. We investigate the growth of intermediate-mass black-holes (IMBHs) of $\sim 10^{5}~M_{\odot}$ in dusty clouds by using one-dimensional radiative-hydrodynamics simulations. We find that the accretion of dusty gas onto IMBHs proceeds gently with small fluctuations of the accretion rate, whereas that of pristine gas causes more violent periodic bursts. At dust-to-gas mass ratios similar to t…

We investigate the star-forming properties of 1620 X-ray selected AGN host galaxies as a function of their specific X-ray luminosity (i.e., X-ray luminosity per unit host stellar mass) -- a proxy of the Eddington ratio. Our motivation is to determine whether there is any evidence of a suppression of star-formation at high Eddington ratios, which may hint toward "AGN feedback" effects. Star-formation rates (SFRs) are derived from fits to Herschel-measured far-infrared spectral energy distributions, taking into account any contamination from the AGN. Herschel-undetected AGNs are included via sta…

We present rest-frame optical spectroscopic observations of 24 Hot Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs) at redshifts 1.7-4.6 with KECK/NIRES. Our targets are selected based on their extreme red colors to be the highest luminosity sources from the WISE infrared survey. In 20 sources with well-detected emission we fit the key [O III], H$β$, H$α$, [N II], and [S II] diagnostic lines to constrain physical conditions. Of the 17 targets with a clear detection of the [O III]$\rm λ$5007A emission line, 15 display broad blueshifted and asymmetric line profiles, with widths ranging from 1000 to 8000 $\rm k…
We report the discovery of a Compton-thick (CT) dust-obscured galaxy (DOG) at $z$ = 0.89, WISE J082501.48+300257.2 (WISE0825+3002), observed by Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). X-ray analysis with the XCLUMPY model revealed that hard X-ray luminosity in the rest-frame 2-10 keV band of WISE0825+3002 is $L_{\rm X}$ (2-10 keV) = $4.2^{+2.8}_{-1.6} \times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ while its hydrogen column density is $N_{\rm H}$ = $1.0^{+0.8}_{-0.4} \times 10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$, indicating that WISE0825+3002 is a mildly CT active galactic nucleus (AGN). We performed the spectral energy dis…
Type 2 quasars are an important constituent of active galaxies, possibly representing the evolutionary precursors of traditionally studied type 1 quasars. We characterize the black hole mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) and Eddington ratio ($L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd}$) for 669 type 2 quasars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, using black hole masses estimated from the $M_{\rm BH}-σ_{\ast}$ relation and bolometric corrections scaled from the extinction-corrected $ [\rm O~{\scriptsize III}]~ λ5007$ luminosity. When stellar velocity dispersions cannot be measured directly from the spectra, we estimate t…
We investigate the triggering mechanism and the structural properties of obscured luminous active galactic nuclei from a detailed study of the rest-frame $B$ and $I$ HST images of 29 nearby ($z\approx 0.04-0.4$) optically selected type 2 quasars. Morphological classification reveals that only a minority (34%) of the hosts are mergers or interacting galaxies. More than half (55%) of the hosts contain regular disks, and a substantial fraction (38%), in fact, are disk-dominated ($B/T\lesssim 0.2$) late-type galaxies with low Sersic indices ($n < 2$), which is characteristic of pseudo bulges. The …
The Swift/BAT 9-month catalogue of active galactic nuclei (AGN) provides an unbiased census of local supermassive black hole accretion, and probes to all but the highest levels of absorption in AGN. We explore a method for characterising the bolometric output of both obscured and unobscured AGN by combining the hard X-ray data from Swift/BAT (14-195keV) with the reprocessed IR emission as seen with the IRAS all-sky surveys. This approach bypasses the complex modifications to the SED introduced by absorption in the optical, UV and 0.1-10 keV regimes and provides a long-term, average picture of …
The supermassive black holes (SMBHs) observed at the centers of all massive galaxies are believed to have grown via luminous accretion during quasar phases in the distant past. The fraction of inflowing rest mass energy emitted as light, the radiative efficiency, has been inferred to be 10\%, in agreement with expectations from thin disk accretion models. But the existence of billion solar-mass SMBHs powering quasars at $z > 7$ challenges this picture: provided they respect the Eddington limit, there is not enough time to grow $z>7$ SMBHs from stellar remnant seeds unless the radiative efficie…
The WISE mission has unveiled a rare population of high-redshift ($z=1-4.6$), dusty, hyper-luminous galaxies, with infrared luminosities $L_{\rm IR} > 10^{13}~L_{\odot}$, and sometimes exceeding $10^{14}~L_{\odot}$. Previous work has shown that their dust temperatures and overall far-IR SEDs are significantly hotter than expected for star-formation. We present here an analysis of the rest-frame optical through mid-IR SEDs for a large sample of these so-called "Hot, Dust-Obscured Galaxies" (Hot DOGs). We find that the SEDs of Hot DOGs are generally well modeled by the combination of a luminous,…
We present new Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observations of the core of IC 2497, the galaxy associated with Hanny's Voorwerp. The combined fits of the Chandra (0.5-8 keV) and NuSTAR (3-24 keV) X-ray spectra, together with WISE mid-IR photometry, optical longslit spectroscopy and optical narrow-band imaging, suggest that the galaxy hosts a Compton-thick AGN ($N_{\rm H} \sim 2 \times 10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$, current intrinsic luminosity $L_{\rm bol} \sim 2-5 \times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$) whose luminosity dropped by a factor of $\sim$50 within the last $\sim 100$ kyr. This correspond…
It is not clear whether gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are unbiased tracers of cosmic star formation at $z > 2$. Since dusty starburst galaxies are significant contributors to the cosmic star formation at these redshifts, they should form a major part of the GRB host population. However, recent studies at $z \leq 2$ have shown that the majority of the star formation activity in GRB hosts is not obscured by dust. Here, we investigate the galaxy-scale dust obscuration in $z \sim 2-3.5$ GRB hosts pre-selected to have high-resolution, high signal-to-noise afterglow spectra in the rest-frame ultraviolet (…
We investigate the observed relationship between black hole mass ($M_{\rm BH}$), bolometric luminosity ($L_{\rm bol}$), and Eddington ratio ($λ_{\rm Edd}$) with optical emission line ratios ([NII] λ6583/Hα, [SII] λλ6716,6731/Hα, [OI] λ6300/Hα, [OIII] λ5007/Hβ, [NeIII] λ3869/Hβ, and HeII λ4686/Hβ) of hard X-ray-selected AGN from the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). We show that the [NII] λ6583/Hα ratio exhibits a significant correlation with $λ_{\rm Edd}$ ($R_{\rm Pear}$ = -0.44, $p$-value=$3\times10^{-13}$, σ = 0.28 dex), and the correlation is not solely driven by $M_{\rm BH}$ or $L_{\rm …
The lack of a strong correlation between AGN X-ray luminosity ($L_X$; a proxy for AGN power) and the star formation rate (SFR) of their host galaxies has recently been attributed to stochastic AGN variability. Studies using population synthesis models have incorporated this by assuming a broad, universal (i.e. does not depend on the host galaxy properties) probability distribution for AGN specific X-ray luminosities (i.e. the ratio of $L_X$ to host stellar mass; a common proxy for Eddington ratio). However, recent studies have demonstrated that this universal Eddington ratio distribution fails…
We present near-infrared spectra, obtained with SINFONI and XShooter observations at ESO VLT, of nine dusty, red QSOs at 1.2<z<2.6. The sources are hard X-ray detected, characterized by cold absorption (N_H>10^{21} - 10^{22} cm^{-2}) and show a broad Ha component in the NIR spectra. We complement this sample with twelve additional sources taken from the literature with similar properties resulting in a total sample of 21 X-ray obscured, intermediate type (1.8-1.9), dusty reddened QSOs. From the broad Ha line we have computed the BH masses through the virial formula and derived Eddington ratios…
We post-process galaxies in the IllustrisTNG simulations with SKIRT radiative transfer calculations to make predictions for the rest-frame near-infrared (NIR) and far-infrared (FIR) properties of galaxies at $z\geq 4$. The rest-frame $K$- and $z$-band galaxy luminosity functions from TNG are overall consistent with observations, despite a $\sim 0.5\,\mathrm{dex}$ underprediction at $z=4$ for $M_{\rm K}\lesssim -25$ and $M_{\rm z}\lesssim -24$. Predictions for the JWST MIRI observed galaxy luminosity functions and number counts are given. Based on theoretical estimations, we show that the next-…
Quasar luminosity function (QLF) shows the active galactic nucleus (AGN) demography as a result of the combination of the growth and the evolution of black holes, galaxies, and dark matter halos along the cosmic time. The recent wide and deep surveys have improved the census of high-redshift quasars, making it possible to construct reliable ultraviolet (UV) QLFs at $2\lesssim z\lesssim6$ down to $M_{1450}=-23$ mag. By parameterizing these up-to-date observed UV QLFs that are the most extensive in both luminosity and survey area coverage at a given redshift, we show that the UV QLF has a univer…
We present ALMA observations and multiwavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis in a WISE-selected, hyperluminous dust-obscured quasar W0533-3401 at $z=2.9$. We derive its physical properties of each component, such as molecular gas, stars, dust and the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). Both the dust continuum at 3 mm and the CO(3-2) line are detected. The derived molecular gas mass $M_{\rm gas}=8.4\times10^{10}\ M_\odot$ and its fraction $f_{\rm gas}=0.7$ suggest that W0533-3401 is gas-rich. The star formation rate (SFR) has been estimated to be $\sim3000-7000\ M_\odot$ yr$…
One of the most pressing questions in cosmology is how the black holes (BHs) powering quasars at high redshift grow to supermassive scales within a billion years of the Big Bang. Here we show that sustained super-Eddington accretion can be achieved for BHs with Eddington fractions $f_{\rm Edd}$ > 2/$ε$, where $ε$ is the efficiency with which radiation is generated in the accretion process. In this regime, the radiation carries too little momentum to halt the accretion flow and the infalling gas traps the radiation. The BH growth then proceeds unimpeded until the gas supply is exhausted, in con…
An analytical approach is proposed to study the evolution of the star-forming galaxy (SFG) main sequence (MS) and the fraction of dust-obscured SF up to $z\sim4$. Far-ultraviolet (FUV) and infrared (IR) star formation rates, SFRs, are described as conditional probability functions of $M_{\ast}$. We convolve them with the galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) of SFGs to derive the FUV and IR LFs. The 2 SF modes formalism is used to describe starburst galaxies. By fitting observed FUV and IR LFs, the parametrization of SFR$_{\rm FUV}-M_{\ast}$ and SFR$_{\rm IR}-M_{\ast}$ are constrained. Our deriv…
We report optical spectroscopic observations of four blue-excess dust-obscured galaxies (BluDOGs) identified by Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. BluDOGs are a sub-class of dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs, defined with the extremely red color $(i-[22])_{\rm AB} \geq 7.0$; Toba et al. 2015), showing a significant flux excess in the optical $g$- and $r$-bands over the power-law fits to the fluxes at the longer wavelengths. Noboriguchi et al. (2019) has suggested that BluDOGs may correspond to the blowing-out phase involved in a gas-rich major merger scenario. However the detailed properties of BluDOGs are …

We present high-resolution observations of the 880 $μ$m (rest-frame FIR) continuum emission in the z$=$4.05 submillimeter galaxy GN20 from the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). These data resolve the obscured star formation in this unlensed galaxy on scales of 0.3$^{\prime\prime}$$\times$0.2$^{\prime\prime}$ ($\sim$2.1$\times$1.3 kpc). The observations reveal a bright (16$\pm$1 mJy) dusty starburst centered on the cold molecular gas reservoir and showing a bar-like extension along the major axis. The striking anti-correlation with the HST/WFC3 imaging suggests that the copious dust s…
We propose a new mechanism for the growth of supermassive black hole (BH) seeds in the star-forming progenitors of local early-type galaxies (ETGs) at $z\gtrsim 1$. This envisages the migration and merging of stellar compact remnants (neutron stars and stellar-mass BHs) via gaseous dynamical friction toward the central high-density regions of such galaxies. We show that, under reasonable assumptions and initial conditions, the process can build up central BH masses of order $10^4-10^6\, M_\odot$ within some $10^7$ yr, so effectively providing heavy seeds before standard disk (Eddington-like) a…
We present an observational study of 22 broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs) at $3\lesssim z \lesssim5$ based on optical/near-IR spectroscopy, aiming to investigate quasar winds and their effects. The near-IR spectroscopy covers the \hb\ and/or \mgii\ broad emission lines (BELs) for these quasars, allowing us to estimate their central black hole (BH) masses in a robust way. We found that our BAL QSOs on average do not have a higher Eddington ratio than that from non-BAL QSOs matched in redshift and/or luminosity. In a subset consisting of seven strong BAL QSOs possessing sub-relativistic B…
Recent simulation studies suggest that the supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth in the early universe may precede the prolonged intense star formation within its host galaxy, instead of quasars appearing after the obscured dusty star formation phase. If so, high-redshift quasars with low Eddington ratios ($λ_{\rm Edd}$) would be found in actively star-forming hosts with a star formation rate (SFR) of $>100~M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. We present the sub-mm observations of IMS J2204+0112, a faint quasar with a quasar bolometric luminosity of $L_{\rm bol}=4.2\times10^{12}~L_{\odot}$ and a low $λ_{\rm …
We study the association between active galactic nuclei (AGN) and environment at scales of $0.01-1\ h^{-1}$Mpc in the IllustrisTNG (TNG100) simulated universe. We identify supermassive black hole (BH) pairs and multiples within scales of 0.01, 0.1, & 1 $h^{-1}$Mpc and examine their AGN activity in relation to randomly-selected pairs and multiples. The number density of BHs in TNG100 is $n=0.06\,h^3$Mpc$^{-3}$ at $z\lesssim1.5$ ($n=0.02\,h^3$ Mpc$^{-3}$ at $z=3$). About $\sim10$% and $\sim1$% of them live in pairs and multiples, respectively, within 0.1 $h^{-1}$Mpc scales. We find that BH syste…
We present Hubble Space Telescope 1.4-1.6 micron images of the hosts of ten extremely red quasars (ERQs) and six type 2 quasar candidates at z=2-3. ERQs, whose bolometric luminosities range between 10^47 and 10^48 erg/sec, show spectroscopic signs of powerful ionized winds, whereas type 2 quasar candidates are less luminous and show only mild outflows. After performing careful subtraction of the quasar light, we clearly detect almost all host galaxies. The median rest-frame B-band luminosity of the ERQ hosts in our sample is 10^11.2 L_Sun, or 4 L* at this redshift. Two of the ten hosts of ERQs…
We present our first results of the survey for high redshift quasars at $5 \lesssim {\rm z} \lesssim 5.7$. The search for quasars in this redshift range has been known to be challenging due to limitations of filter sets used in previous studies. We conducted a quasar survey for two specific redshift ranges, 4.60 $\leq$ z $\leq$ 5.40 and 5.50 $\leq$ z $\leq$ 6.05, using multi-wavelength data that include observations using custom-designed filters, $is$ and $iz$. Using these filters and a new selection technique, we were able to reduce the fraction of interlopers. Through optical spectroscopy, w…
We report the discovery of an exceptional MIR flare in a Type 2 AGN, SDSS J165726.81+234528.1, at $z=0.059$. This object brightened by 3 mag in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) $W1$ and $W2$ bands between 2015 and 2017 (and is fading since 2018), without significant changes ($\lesssim$ 0.2 mag) in the optical over the same period of time. Based on the WISE light curves and near-IR imaging, the flare is more significant at longer wavelengths, suggesting an origin of hot dust emission. The estimated black hole mass ($\sim 10^{6.5}\,M_\odot$) from different methods places its peak b…
We determine the low-redshift X-ray luminosity function (XLF), active black hole mass function (BHMF), and Eddington-ratio distribution function (ERDF) for both unobscured (Type 1) and obscured (Type 2) active galactic nuclei (AGN) using the unprecedented spectroscopic completeness of the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) data release 2. In addition to a straightforward 1/Vmax approach, we also compute the intrinsic distributions, accounting for sample truncation by employing a forward modeling approach to recover the observed BHMF and ERDF. As previous BHMFs and ERDFs have been robustly det…
