We explore the properties of the host galaxies of X-ray selected AGN in the COSMOS field using the Chandra Legacy sample and the LEGA-C survey VLT optical spectra. Our main goal is to compare the relative ages of the host galaxies of the obscured and unobscured AGN by means of the calcium break Dn(4000) and the Hdelta Balmer line. The host galaxy ages are examined in conjunction with other properties such as the galaxy stellar mass, and star-formation rate as well as the AGN Eddington ratio. Our sample consists of 50 unobscured or mildly obscured (logN_H (cm-2) < 23) and 23 heavily obscured AGN (log N_H (cm-2) >23) in the redshift range z=0.6-1. We take specific caution to create control samples in order to match the exact luminosity and redshift distributions for the obscured and unobscured AGN. The majority of unobscured AGN appear to live in young galaxies in contrast to the obscured AGN which appear to live in galaxies located between the young and old galaxy populations. This finding may be in contrast to those evolutionary AGN unification models which postulate that the AGN begin their life in a heavy obscuration phase. The host galaxies of the obscured AGN have significantly lower levels of specific star-formation. At the same time the obscured AGN have lower Eddington ratios indicating a link between the star-formation and the black hole accretion. We find that the distribution of the stellar masses of the host galaxies of obscured AGN is skewed towards higher stellar masses in agreement with previous findings. Our results on the relative age of obscured AGN are valid when we match our obscured and unobscured AGN samples according to the stellar mass of their host galaxies. All the above results become less conspicuous when a lower column density (log N_H(cm-2)= 21.5 or 22) is used to separate the obscured and unobscured AGN populations.
Highly obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) are common in nearby galaxies, but are difficult to observe beyond the local Universe, where they are expected to significantly contribute to the black hole accretion rate density. Furthermore, Compton-thick (CT) absorbers (NH>10^24 cm^-2) suppress even the hard X-ray (2-10 keV) AGN nuclear emission, and therefore the column density distribution above 10^24 cm^-2 is largely unknown. We present the identification and multi-wavelength properties of a heavily obscured (NH>~10^25 cm^-2), intrinsically luminous (L(2-10keV)>10^44 erg s^-1) AGN at z=0.353 …
We analyse different photometric and spectroscopic properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and quasars (QSOs) selected by their mid-IR power-law and X-ray emission from the COSMOS survey. We use a set of star-forming galaxies as a control sample to compare with the results. We have considered samples of obscured (HR > -0.2) and unobscured (HR < -0.2) sources including AGNs with $L_X$ < $10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$, as well as QSOs ($L_X$ > $10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$) with 1.4 < z < 2.5. We also study the typical environment of these samples, by assessing neighbouring galaxy number density and neighb…
We present the X-ray properties of 108 Dust-Obscured Galaxies (DOGs; F$_{24 μm}$/F$_{R} >$ 1000) in the COSMOS field, all of which detected in at least three far-infrared bands with the Herschel Observatory. Out of the entire sample, 22 are individually detected in the hard 2-8 keV X-ray band by the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey, allowing us to classify them as AGN. Of them, 6 (27%) are Compton Thick AGN candidates with column densities N$_{H}$$>$10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ while 15 are moderately obscured AGNs with 10$^{22}$ $<$ N$_{H}$ $<$ 10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$. Additionally, we estimate AGN contributi…
While major mergers have long been proposed as a driver of both AGN activity and the M-sigma relation, studies of moderate to high redshift Seyfert-luminosity AGN hosts have found little evidence for enhanced rates of interactions. However, both theory and observation suggest that while these AGN may be fueled by stochastic accretion and secular processes, high-luminosity, high-redshift, and heavily obscured AGN are the AGN most likely to be merger-driven. To better sample this population of AGN, we turn to infrared selection in the CANDELS/COSMOS field. Compared to their lower-luminosity and …
We present band 6 ALMA observations of a heavily-obscured radio-loud ($L_{1.4\ \mathrm{GHz}}=10^{25.4}$ W Hz$^{-1}$) AGN candidate at $z_\mathrm{phot}=6.83\pm0.06$ found in the 1.5 deg$^2$ COSMOS field. The ALMA data reveal detections of exceptionally strong [CII]158$μ$m ($z_\mathrm{[CII]}=6.8532$) and underlying dust continuum emission from this object (COS-87259), where the [CII] line luminosity, line width, and 158$μ$m continuum luminosity are comparable to that seen from $z\sim7$ sub-mm galaxies and quasar hosts. The 158$μ$m continuum detection suggests a total infrared luminosity of $9\ti…
We present new data for four candidate obscured Compton-Thick (CT) quasars at z $\sim$1-2.5 observed with SINFONI VLT spectrograph in AO mode. These sources were selected from a 24$μ$m Spitzer MIPS survey of the COSMOS field, on the basis of red mid-infrared-to-optical and optical-to-near-infrared colours, with the intention of identifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in dust enshrouded environments, where most of the black hole mass is assembled in dust enshrouded environments. Near infrared spectra were analyzed in order to check for emission line features and to search for broad components…
We present a study of the connection between black hole accretion, star formation, and galaxy morphology at z<=2.5. We focus on active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected by their mid-IR power-law emission. By fitting optical to far-IR photometry with state-of-the-art spectral energy distribution (SED) techniques, we derive stellar masses, star formation rates, dust properties, and AGN contributions in galaxies over the whole COSMOS field. We find that obscured AGNs lie within or slightly above the star-forming sequence. We confirm our previous finding about compact host galaxies of obscured AGNs …
Dust-Obscured galaxies (DOGs) are bright 24 um-selected sources with extreme obscuration at optical wavelengths. They are typically characterized by a rising power-law continuum of hot dust (T_D ~ 200-1000K) in the near-IR indicating that their mid-IR luminosity is dominated by an an active galactic nucleus (AGN). DOGs with a fainter 24 um flux display a stellar bump in the near-IR and their mid-IR luminosity appears to be mainly powered by dusty star formation. Alternatively, it may be that the mid-IR emission arising from AGN activity is dominant but the torus is sufficiently opaque to make …
We present our statistical study of near infrared (NIR) variability of X-ray selected Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in the COSMOS field, using UltraVISTA data. This is the largest sample of AGN light curves in YJHKs bands, making possible to have a global description of the nature of AGN for a large range of redshifts, and for different levels of obscuration. To characterize the variability properties of the sources we computed the Structure Function. Our results show that there is an anti-correlation between the Structure Function $A$ parameter (variability amplitude) and the wavelength of emi…
Heavily obscured, Compton Thick (CT, NH>10^24 cm^-2) AGN may represent an important phase in AGN/galaxy co-evolution and are expected to provide a significant contribution to the cosmic X-ray background (CXB). Through direct X-ray spectra analysis, we selected 39 heavily obscured AGN (NH>3x10^23 cm^-2) in the 2 deg^2 XMM-COSMOS survey. After selecting CT AGN based on the fit of a simple absorbed two power law model to the XMM data, the presence of CT AGN was confirmed in 80% of the sources using deeper Chandra data and more complex models. The final sample of CT AGN comprises 10 sources spanni…
A complete census of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is a prerequisite for understanding the growth of supermassive black holes across cosmic time. A significant challenge toward this goal is the whereabouts of heavily obscured AGN that remain uncertain. This paper sets new constraints on the demographics of this population by developing a methodology that combines X-ray spectral information with priors derived from multiwavelength observations. We select X-ray AGN in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey and fit their $2.2-500μm$ spectral energy distributions with galaxy and AGN templates to determin…
Motivated by recent observational constraints on dust reprocessed emission in star forming galaxies at $z\sim 6$ and above we use the very-large cosmological hydrodynamical simulation \bluetides\ to explore predictions for the amount of dust obscured star formation in the early Universe ($z>8$). \bluetides\ matches current observational constraints on both the UV luminosity function and galaxy stellar mass function and predicts that approximately $90\%$ of the star formation in high-mass ($M_{*}>10^{10}\,{\rm M_{\odot}}$) galaxies at $z=8$ is already obscured by dust. The relationship between …

To understand the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) phenomenon and their impact on the evolution of galaxies, a complete AGN census is required; however, finding heavily obscured AGNs is observationally challenging. Here we use the deep and extensive multi-wavelength data in the COSMOS field to select a complete sample of 578 infrared (IR) quasars ($L_{\rm AGN,IR}>10^{45}\rm \: erg\: s^{-1}$) at $z<3$, with minimal obscuration bias, using detailed UV-to-far IR spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We complement our SED constraints with X-ray and radio observations to further investigate the p…
Many X-ray bright active galactic nuclei (AGN) are predicted to follow an extended stage of obscured black hole growth. In support of this picture we examine the X-ray undetected AGNs in the COSMOS field and compare their host galaxies with X-ray bright AGNs. We examine galaxies with M_\ast>10^{9.5}M_\odot for the presence of AGNs at redshifts $z=0.5-3$. We select AGNs in the infrared using \textit{Spitzer} and \textit{Herschel} detections and use color selection techniques to select AGNs within strongly star forming hosts. We stack \textit{Chandra} X-ray data of galaxies with an IR detection …
In this work we report the discovery of the hyperluminous galaxy HELP_J100156.75+022344.7 at the photometric redshift of z ~ 4.3. The galaxy was discovered in the Cosmological Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field, one of the fields studied by the Herschel Extragalactic Legacy Project (HELP). We present the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the galaxy and fit it with the CYprus models for Galaxies and their NUclear Spectra (CYGNUS) multi-component radiative transfer models. We find that its emission is dominated by an obscured quasar with a predicted total 1-1000um luminosity of $3.91^{+1.69}_{-…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array observations of the rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) dust continuum emission of six bright Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at $z \simeq 7$. One LBG is detected ($5.2σ$ at peak emission), while the others remain individually undetected at the $3σ$ level. The average FIR luminosity of the sample is found to be $L_{\rm FIR} \simeq 2 \times 10^{11}\,{\rm L}_{\odot}$, corresponding to an obscured star-formation rate (SFR) that is comparable to that inferred from the unobscured UV emission. In comparison to the infrared excess (IRX$\,=L_{\rm FIR}/L_{\…

Recent studies have found that obscured quasars cluster more strongly and are thus hosted by dark matter haloes of larger mass than their unobscured counterparts. These results pose a challenge for the simplest unification models, in which obscured objects are intrinsically the same as unobscured sources but seen through a dusty line of sight. There is general consensus that a structure like a "dusty torus" exists, meaning that this intrinsic similarity is likely the case for at least some subset of obscured quasars. However, the larger host halo masses of obscured quasars implies that there i…
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are powered by the accretion of material onto a supermassive black hole (SMBH), and are among the most luminous objects in the Universe. However, the huge radiative power of most AGN cannot be seen directly, as the accretion is "hidden" behind gas and dust that absorbs many of the characteristic observational signatures. This obscuration presents an important challenge for uncovering the complete AGN population and understanding the cosmic evolution of SMBHs. In this review we describe a broad range of multi-wavelength techniques that are currently employed to iden…
We present 65 extremely dust-obscured galaxies from the UltraVISTA DR3 survey of the COSMOS field at $1<z<4$. In contrast to other studies of dusty galaxies, we select our sample based on dust attenuation measured by UV-MIR spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling that allows for extreme attenuation levels. We construct our sample by making cuts at $1 \le z \le 4$, A$_V \ge 3$, and log(M$_*$/M$_\odot$)$ \ge 10.5$. This method reliably selects galaxies exhibiting independent indicators of significant dust content, including FIR detection rates. We perform panchromatic SED modeling with match…
We present a structural study of 182 obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) at z<=1.5, selected in the COSMOS field from their extreme infrared to X-ray luminosity ratio and their negligible emission at optical wavelengths. We fit optical to far-infrared spectral energy distributions and analyze deep HST imaging to derive the physical and morphological properties of their host galaxies. We find that such galaxies are more compact than normal star-forming sources at similar redshift and stellar mass, and we show that it is not an observational bias related to the emission of the AGN. Based on t…
We model the projected angular two-point correlation function (2PCF) of obscured and unobscured quasars selected using the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), at a median redshift of $z \sim 1$ using a five-parameter Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) parameterization, derived from a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation by Chatterjee et al. The HOD parameterization was previously used to model the 2PCF of optically selected quasars and X-ray bright active galactic nuclei (AGN) at $z \sim 1$. The current work shows that a single HOD parameterization can be used to model the population o…
We aim to study the statistical properties of dusty star-forming galaxies, such as their number counts, luminosity functions (LF) and dust-obscured star-formation rate density (SFRD). We use state-of-the-art de-blended Herschel catalogue in the COSMOS field, generated by combining the Bayesian source extraction tool XID+ and informative prior on the spectral energy distributions, to measure the number counts and LFs at far-infrared (FIR) and sub-millimetre (sub-mm) wavelengths. Thanks to our de-confusion technique and deep multi-wavelength photometry, we are able to achieve more accurate measu…
Recent works have suggested that selection criteria based on MIR colors can be used to reveal a population of dust-enshrouded, extremely luminous quasars at z>1. However the X-ray spectral properties of these intriguing sources still remain largely unexplored. We report on an X-ray spectroscopic study of a sample of 44 very bright mid-IR galaxies with extreme mid-IR to optical flux ratios (MIR/O>2000). The X-ray coverage of the sample is highly inhomogeneous (from snap-shot 5 ks Chandra observations to medium-deep XMM exposures of 70 ks) and, consequently, a sizable fraction of them (~43%) rem…
We select a sample of 90 obscured (type2) AGN with 1.45<z<3.05 from the zCOSMOS-deep galaxy sample by 5 sigma-detection of the high-ionization CIV λ1549 narrow emission line. The presence of this feature in a galaxy spectrum is often associated with nuclear activity, and the selection effectiveness has been also confirmed by ultraviolet (UV) emission line ratio diagnostic diagrams. Applying the same selection technique, a sample of 102 unobscured (type 1) AGN was collected. Taking advantage of the large amount of multi-band data available in the COSMOS field, we investigate the properties of t…
The discovery of several clusters of red supergiants towards l=24-30 deg has triggered interest in this area of the Galactic plane, where lines of sight are very complex and previous explorations of the stellar content were very preliminary. We attempt to characterise the stellar population associated with the HII region RCW173 (Sh2-60), located at l=25.3 deg, as previous studies have suggested that this population could be beyond the Sagittarius arm. We obtained UBV photometry of a stellar field to the south of the brightest part of RCW173, as well as spectroscopy of about twenty stars in the…
We present the catalog of optical and infrared counterparts of the Chandra COSMOS-Legacy Survey, a 4.6 Ms Chandra program on the 2.2 square degrees of the COSMOS field, combination of 56 new overlapping observations obtained in Cycle 14 with the previous C-COSMOS survey. In this Paper we report the i, K, and 3.6 micron identifications of the 2273 X-ray point sources detected in the new Cycle 14 observations. We use the likelihood ratio technique to derive the association of optical/infrared (IR) counterparts for 97% of the X-ray sources. We also update the information for the 1743 sources dete…
The known host galaxies of short-hard gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) to date are characterized by low to moderate star-formation rates and a broad range of stellar masses. In this paper, we positionally associate the recent unambiguously short-hard Swift GRB 100206A with a disk galaxy at redshift z=0.4068 that is rapidly forming stars at a rate of ~30 M_sun/yr, almost an order of magnitude higher than any previously identified short GRB host. Using photometry from Gemini, Keck, PAIRITEL, and WISE, we show that the galaxy is very red (g-K = 4.3 AB mag), heavily obscured (A_V ~ 2 mag), and has the high…
We provide an holistic view of galaxy evolution at high redshift z>4, that incorporates the constraints from various astrophysical/cosmological probes, including the estimate of the cosmic SFR density from UV/IR surveys and long GRB rates, the cosmic reionization history after the latest Planck measurements, and the missing satellites issue. We achieve this goal in a model-independent way by exploiting the SFR functions derived by Mancuso et al. (2016) on the basis of an educated extrapolation of the latest UV/far-IR data from HST/Herschel, and already tested against a number of independent ob…
We study the comoving space density of X-ray-selected luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and the obscured AGN fraction at high redshifts ($3 < z < 5$) in the Subaru/{\it XMM-Newton} Deep Survey (SXDS) field. From an X-ray source catalog with high completeness of optical identification thanks to deep optical images, we select a sample of 30 AGNs at $z > 3$ with intrinsic (de-absorbed and rest-frame 2--10 keV) luminosities of $L_{\rm X} = 10^{44-45}$ erg s$^{-1}$ detected in the 0.5--2 keV band, consisting of 20 and 10 objects with spectroscopic and photometric redshifts, respectively. Utili…
We investigate the far-infrared properties of galaxies selected via deep, narrow-band imaging of the H$α$ emission line in four redshift slices from $z=0.40$--$2.23$ over $\sim 1$deg$^2$ as part of the High-redshift Emission Line Survey (HiZELS). We use a stacking approach in the Herschel PACS/SPIRE bands, along with $850\,μ$m imaging from SCUBA-2 to study the evolution of the dust properties of H$α$-emitters selected above an evolving characteristic luminosity threshold, $0.2L^\star_{{\rm H}α}(z)$. We investigate the relationship between the dust temperatures and the far-infrared luminosities…
Quasar feedback in the form of powerful outflows is invoked as a key mechanism to quench star formation in galaxies, preventing massive galaxies to over-grow and producing the red colors of ellipticals. On the other hand, some models are also requiring `positive' AGN feedback, inducing star formation in the host galaxy through enhanced gas pressure in the interstellar medium. However, finding observational evidence of the effects of both types of feedback is still one of the main challenges of extragalactic astronomy, as few observations of energetic and extended radiatively-driven winds are a…
AIMS. This work addresses the AGN IR-selection dependency on intrinsic source luminosity and obscuration, in order to identify and charaterise biases which could affect conclusions in studies. METHODS. We study IR-selected AGN in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) survey and in the Cosmological Survey (COSMOS). The AGN sample is divided into low and high X-ray luminosity classes, and into unobscured (type-1) and obscured (type-2) classes by means of X-ray and optical spectroscopy data. Specifically in the X-rays regime, we adopt the intrinsic luminosity taking into account the estimated colum…

Recent spectroscopic observations of a few thousand partially obscured galaxies in the Vela constellation revealed a massive overdensity on supercluster scales straddling the Galactic Equator (l $\sim$ 272.5deg) at $cz \sim 18000$km/s. It remained unrecognised because it is located just beyond the boundaries and volumes of systematic whole-sky redshift and peculiar velocity surveys - and is obscured by the Milky Way. The structure lies close to the apex where residual bulkflows suggest considerable mass excess. The uncovered Vela Supercluster (VSCL) conforms of a confluence of merging walls, b…
We present the largest high-redshift (3<z<6.85) sample of X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) on a contiguous field, using sources detected in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey. The sample contains 174 sources, 87 with spectroscopic redshift, the other 87 with photometric redshift (z_phot). In this work we treat z_phot as a probability weighted sum of contributions, adding to our sample the contribution of sources with z_phot<3 but z_phot probability distribution >0 at z>3. We compute the number counts in the observed 0.5-2 keV band, finding a decline in the number of sources at z>3 and…
The bulk of the stellar growth over cosmic time is dominated by IR luminous galaxies at cosmic noon (z=1-2), many of which harbor a hidden active galactic nucleus (AGN). We use state of the art infrared color diagnostics, combining Spitzer and Herschel observations, to separate dust-obscured AGN from dusty star forming galaxies (SFGs) in the CANDELS and COSMOS surveys. We calculate 24 micron counts of SFGs, AGN/star forming "Composites", and AGN. AGN and Composites dominate the counts above 0.8 mJy at 24 micron, and Composites form at least 25% of an IR sample even to faint detection limits. W…
