Dance-driven music generation aims to generate musical pieces conditioned on dance videos. Previous works focus on monophonic or raw audio generation, while the multi-instruments scenario is under-explored. The challenges associated with the dance-driven multi-instrument music (MIDI) generation are twofold: 1) no publicly available multi-instruments MIDI and video paired dataset and 2) the weak correlation between music and video. To tackle these challenges, we build the first multi-instruments MIDI and dance paired dataset (D2MIDI). Based on our proposed dataset, we introduce a multi-instruments MIDI generation framework (Dance2MIDI) conditioned on dance video. Specifically, 1) to capture the relationship between dance and music, we employ the Graph Convolutional Network to encode the dance motion. This allows us to extract features related to dance movement and dance style, 2) to generate a harmonious rhythm, we utilize a Transformer model to decode the drum track sequence, leveraging a cross-attention mechanism, and 3) we model the task of generating the remaining tracks based on the drum track as a sequence understanding and completion task. A BERT-like model is employed to comprehend the context of the entire music piece through self-supervised learning. We evaluate the generated music of our framework trained on the D2MIDI dataset and demonstrate that our method achieves State-of-the-Art performance.

Dance and music typically go hand in hand. The complexities in dance, music, and their synchronisation make them fascinating to study from a computational creativity perspective. While several works have looked at generating dance for a given music, automatically generating music for a given dance remains under-explored. This capability could have several creative expression and entertainment applications. We present some early explorations in this direction. We present a search-based offline approach that generates music after processing the entire dance video and an online approach that uses…

We present Dance2Music-GAN (D2M-GAN), a novel adversarial multi-modal framework that generates complex musical samples conditioned on dance videos. Our proposed framework takes dance video frames and human body motions as input, and learns to generate music samples that plausibly accompany the corresponding input. Unlike most existing conditional music generation works that generate specific types of mono-instrumental sounds using symbolic audio representations (e.g., MIDI), and that usually rely on pre-defined musical synthesizers, in this work we generate dance music in complex styles (e.g.,…
Since the introduction of deep learning, researchers have proposed content generation systems using deep learning and proved that they are competent to generate convincing content and artistic output, including music. However, one can argue that these deep learning-based systems imitate and reproduce the patterns inherent within what humans have created, instead of generating something new and creative. This paper focuses on music generation, especially rhythm patterns of electronic dance music, and discusses if we can use deep learning to generate novel rhythms, interesting patterns not found…

Similar to colorization in computer vision, instrument separation is to assign instrument labels (e.g. piano, guitar...) to notes from unlabeled mixtures which contain only performance information. To address the problem, we adopt diffusion models and explicitly guide them to preserve consistency between mixtures and music. The quantitative results show that our proposed model can generate high-fidelity samples for multitrack symbolic music with creativity.

In the recording studio, producers of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) spend more time creating, shaping, mixing and mastering sounds, than with compositional aspects or arrangement. They tune the sound by close listening and by leveraging audio metering and audio analysis tools, until they successfully creat the desired sound aesthetics. DJs of EDM tend to play sets of songs that meet their sound ideal. We therefore suggest using audio metering and monitoring tools from the recording studio to analyze EDM, instead of relying on conventional low-level audio features. We test our novel set of featu…
Musical instrument classification is one of the focuses of Music Information Retrieval (MIR). In order to solve the problem of poor performance of current musical instrument classification models, we propose a musical instrument classification algorithm based on multi-channel feature fusion and XGBoost. Based on audio feature extraction and fusion of the dataset, the features are input into the XGBoost model for training; secondly, we verified the superior performance of the algorithm in the musical instrument classification task by com-paring different feature combinations and several classic…
Existing multi-instrumental datasets tend to be biased toward pop and classical music. In addition, they generally lack high-level annotations such as emotion tags. In this paper, we propose YM2413-MDB, an 80s FM video game music dataset with multi-label emotion annotations. It includes 669 audio and MIDI files of music from Sega and MSX PC games in the 80s using YM2413, a programmable sound generator based on FM. The collected game music is arranged with a subset of 15 monophonic instruments and one drum instrument. They were converted from binary commands of the YM2413 sound chip. Each song …
We propose a novel system that takes as an input body movements of a musician playing a musical instrument and generates music in an unsupervised setting. Learning to generate multi-instrumental music from videos without labeling the instruments is a challenging problem. To achieve the transformation, we built a pipeline named 'Multi-instrumentalistNet' (MI Net). At its base, the pipeline learns a discrete latent representation of various instruments music from log-spectrogram using a Vector Quantized Variational Autoencoder (VQ-VAE) with multi-band residual blocks. The pipeline is then traine…

In music source separation, the number of sources may vary for each piece and some of the sources may belong to the same family of instruments, thus sharing timbral characteristics and making the sources more correlated. This leads to additional challenges in the source separation problem. This paper proposes a source separation method for multiple musical instruments sounding simultaneously and explores how much additional information apart from the audio stream can lift the quality of source separation. We explore conditioning techniques at different levels of a primary source separation net…
Music-driven choreography is a challenging problem with a wide variety of industrial applications. Recently, many methods have been proposed to synthesize dance motions from music for a single dancer. However, generating dance motion for a group remains an open problem. In this paper, we present $\rm AIOZ-GDANCE$, a new large-scale dataset for music-driven group dance generation. Unlike existing datasets that only support single dance, our new dataset contains group dance videos, hence supporting the study of group choreography. We propose a semi-autonomous labeling method with humans in the l…

Choreography refers to creation of dance steps and motions for dances according to the latent knowledge in human mind, where the created dance motions are in general style-specific and consistent. So far, such latent style-specific knowledge about dance styles cannot be represented explicitly in human language and has not yet been learned in previous works on music-to-dance generation tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel music-to-dance synthesis framework with controllable style embeddings. These embeddings are learned representations of style-consistent kinematic abstraction of reference …
We introduce MIDI-VAE, a neural network model based on Variational Autoencoders that is capable of handling polyphonic music with multiple instrument tracks, as well as modeling the dynamics of music by incorporating note durations and velocities. We show that MIDI-VAE can perform style transfer on symbolic music by automatically changing pitches, dynamics and instruments of a music piece from, e.g., a Classical to a Jazz style. We evaluate the efficacy of the style transfer by training separate style validation classifiers. Our model can also interpolate between short pieces of music, produce…

Music and dance have always co-existed as pillars of human activities, contributing immensely to the cultural, social, and entertainment functions in virtually all societies. Notwithstanding the gradual systematization of music and dance into two independent disciplines, their intimate connection is undeniable and one art-form often appears incomplete without the other. Recent research works have studied generative models for dance sequences conditioned on music. The dual task of composing music for given dances, however, has been largely overlooked. In this paper, we propose a novel extension…

Automatic choreography generation is a challenging task because it often requires an understanding of two abstract concepts - music and dance - which are realized in the two different modalities, namely audio and video, respectively. In this paper, we propose a music-driven choreography generation system using an auto-regressive encoder-decoder network. To this end, we first collect a set of multimedia clips that include both music and corresponding dance motion. We then extract the joint coordinates of the dancer from video and the mel-spectrogram of music from audio, and train our network us…

We present a general computational approach that enables a machine to generate a dance for any input music. We encode intuitive, flexible heuristics for what a 'good' dance is: the structure of the dance should align with the structure of the music. This flexibility allows the agent to discover creative dances. Human studies show that participants find our dances to be more creative and inspiring compared to meaningful baselines. We also evaluate how perception of creativity changes based on different presentations of the dance. Our code is available at https://github.com/purvaten/feel-the-mus…
Dance and music are two highly correlated artistic forms. Synthesizing dance motions has attracted much attention recently. Most previous works conduct music-to-dance synthesis via directly music to human skeleton keypoints mapping. Meanwhile, human choreographers design dance motions from music in a two-stage manner: they firstly devise multiple choreographic dance units (CAUs), each with a series of dance motions, and then arrange the CAU sequence according to the rhythm, melody and emotion of the music. Inspired by these, we systematically study such two-stage choreography approach and cons…

In this paper, we propose a novel framework for music-driven dance motion synthesis with controllable key pose constraint. In contrast to methods that generate dance motion sequences only based on music without any other controllable conditions, this work targets on synthesizing high-quality dance motion driven by music as well as customized poses performed by users. Our model involves two single-modal transformer encoders for music and motion representations and a cross-modal transformer decoder for dance motions generation. The cross-modal transformer decoder achieves the capability of synth…

We present a learning-based approach with pose perceptual loss for automatic music video generation. Our method can produce a realistic dance video that conforms to the beats and rhymes of almost any given music. To achieve this, we firstly generate a human skeleton sequence from music and then apply the learned pose-to-appearance mapping to generate the final video. In the stage of generating skeleton sequences, we utilize two discriminators to capture different aspects of the sequence and propose a novel pose perceptual loss to produce natural dances. Besides, we also provide a new cross-mod…

Music-to-dance translation is a brand-new and powerful feature in recent role-playing games. Players can now let their characters dance along with specified music clips and even generate fan-made dance videos. Previous works of this topic consider music-to-dance as a supervised motion generation problem based on time-series data. However, these methods suffer from limited training data pairs and the degradation of movements. This paper provides a new perspective for this task where we re-formulate the translation problem as a piece-wise dance phrase retrieval problem based on the choreography …

We present AIST++, a new multi-modal dataset of 3D dance motion and music, along with FACT, a Full-Attention Cross-modal Transformer network for generating 3D dance motion conditioned on music. The proposed AIST++ dataset contains 5.2 hours of 3D dance motion in 1408 sequences, covering 10 dance genres with multi-view videos with known camera poses -- the largest dataset of this kind to our knowledge. We show that naively applying sequence models such as transformers to this dataset for the task of music conditioned 3D motion generation does not produce satisfactory 3D motion that is well corr…
To generate dance that temporally and aesthetically matches the music is a challenging problem, as the following factors need to be considered. First, the aesthetic styles and messages conveyed by the motion and music should be consistent. Second, the beats of the generated motion should be locally aligned to the musical features. And finally, basic choreomusical rules should be observed, and the motion generated should be diverse. To address these challenges, we propose ChoreoGraph, which choreographs high-quality dance motion for a given piece of music over a Dynamic Graph. A data-driven lea…
